Miles Davis said her voice was like a horn…If she’s not a genius, she is sitting at it’s doorstep. She had no training!!! One of my all time favorites!!
Yes a sound all her own. Many have tried to copy her and damage their voice copying Chaka. She is natural. She sings in any key. Remember years back on Arsenio Hall she said play in any key.

yes I do vividly..I think her daughter "pretty in prink" was on the show..they asked Chaka to sing and Arsenio what key Chaka hollered out any key..and Arsenio said you aint that bad..I know you bad..and sang into commercial break..any key!!

Yes! One of the singers from the days when everyone didn’t sound the same. In those days you know when Chaka was singing; you knew when Patti was singing; you knew when Celine was singing; you knew when Natalie was singing; you knew when Whitney and Mariah were singing, and people compared those two, but you could still distinguish the difference.
Chaka is one of my all-time favs. Thanks for the wonderful analysis!

Thank you! So very true. The voices of yesteryear were all unique. Most female voices today sound homogenous like they all sucked helium. That minnie mouse, tinny, shallow voice that I would say was perhaps popularized by Madonna ( who I actually like cause at least she's an original and trendsetter).

Vesta was a great singer who had the "Chaka" sound down to the T, but she didn't have the super high soprano range that Chaka has enjoyed.
Several have tried to intimate her voice
The musicality is top tier 👌🏽 this is a woman who knows a voice is it’s own instrument

She is catholic and she said she grew up doing Gregorian chants in catholic choir and she did opera as well
She has an interview saying she also listened too a lot of jazz improv and based her style off of horns

I always remember attending a Rufus and Chaka concert back in 1975. She was opening for Stevie in Long Beach, CA.
Our poor college student funds got us last row in the arena seats. The sound went out, and Chaka just kept on singin’!

Great analysis. I love the appreciation for Chaka Khan's voice. My dad introduced me to Chaka Khan when I was a kid. She's one of the greats. I've never understood how she hits those higher notes so casually. I picture her taking a nap and just wake up on that high note, then fall back asleep 🤣

Believe it or not..Chaka is not a soprano. She is a contralto with mezzo soprano capabilities. What separates Chaka from most vocalists is the fact that she does most of her singing in chest voice and has the ability to slide between head and chest with so much technique that not many are capable of doing. She compares her voice to a horn. She is truly in a class all by herself. Thank you so much for your very detailed overview of my favorite vocalist of all time!
Yes that’s what I’ve always heard. She proudly classifies herself as a contralto. I just love her voice so much. She’s my all time favorite.

She just does it so easy and natural seeming..when she's comfortable, relaxed, rested and in her zone. That's when you get A-game Chaka for sure. She's also sung this song a gazillion times and still can make it sound very live and well.

I love Chaka and have seen her live many times, sometimes at her best and other times she was clearly inebriated. She has one of the best voices in R&B and is a legend 💐💐💐
Through the fire, her voice has survived. Her instrument is clearly gifted by God for what she has endured!! As you can see, she is one of my all time favorites and was finally able to see her live in March 2020 right before the shut down.

Its Chaka's unique style of phrasing that gets us fans hooked lol..she's a singer with a mind of an instrumentalist..she stays in the pocket with the band most of the time..n she has such a unique ear for notes..if she's singing live she loves to improvise n interweave a lot to enhance the music or bring 'freshness' to it..that is why she relies a lot on her background singers especially to cover the choruses..in this performance we can see that she is still trying to improvise on the chorus despite the absence of background vocalist..its a good thing the musicians can sing to back her up where necessary haha..many singers will use their voices to showcase themselves while Chaka is more of a musician's kind of singer haha..that is why the best of them loves to work with her.

Chaka can go anywhere with her voice and with such ease. I pray for her to be clean from abusing her body. Her versus with her contemporary equal Stephanie Mills was heartbreaking. Love me some Chaka. Could u do two old school singers the aforementioned Stephanie Mills and Dionne Warwick. Ms. Warwick is so unique I am curious to see how u would disect or analyze her voice. She recently nailed the take it AAaaaall away in 2022. I was shocked because she never does it live.
the other time she did it was when she performed with David Foster in Jakarta.
What I love about Chaka is that her singing, whilst being very impressive, never comes across as intentionally being impressive.
She just sings.
And when she sometimes takes phrases up an octave it's never like 'I' m gonna wow them with some high notes" she just throws them out there because she feels like it and it's piss-easy for her.
I sometimes think it's even a voice-relaxation tool that she intuitively uses to get a solid placement during a performance when she goes into this very twangy mode.
And I mean it makes sense, proper twang gives ur voice focus, makes the instrument 'smaller' and ur aurflow iss used more efficient when the volume/loudness is increased via twang and not via more air.
Just a clever use of specific resonances
This is my girl. Every since she came on the scene with Tell Me Something Good, I have loved Chaka Khan. Through The Fire is my absolute favorite and it was at that point that I had to go see her live. I have always been intrigued by the way she pronounced words when she sang, and, her background singers pronounced the words just like her. It just made the songs sound so dang gone incredible. I've just always appreciated that about her.
The queen .. she is the singer that always intrigued me ... i does not know where she will go although ive heard her sang the same song different times .. and suddenly explosives high note out of nowhere .. hail the queen
I get the same feels you get just watching Chaka masterfully singing this tune which is difficult to sing. I get a whole new appreciation for the multidimensionality of the singing voice by the way you analyze and pick apart the techniques. 🙏🏾

Aloha! Great timing. Last week I started a Chaka revival in my car. Sooooo good. Pure talent. I noticed her vowels and Rs are very angular - I can hear her Chicago accent when she sings ☺️

This song is how I discovered this thing called music and phenomenal music at that. I was 4 or 5 tops and remember being mesmerized by the chorus! I immediately wanted to hear it again! But how? It was the early 80s and it was a year or more before I would hear this Goddess again! My love for her voice and music style and beauty has never changed... thx for analyzing this!!

.As a dancer, I ACTually followed the way she would sing/sang as a soloist & with others.
It was ALWAYS OBVIOUS she's holding back, & giving moments that shocked the audience, then would come back to the "alright y'all, y'all can sing-along a bit before I give y'all something different, then y'all can clap at the parts y'all missed" 😊😊😊😁.
She has too MANY favorite shows, and when she sings/sangs with a singer/sanger that's great, she focuses on showing they can sing/sang, and she'll find ways compliments the GIFT/s the person has been temporarily GIVEN. She sings/sangs for love of singing/hanging and the joy of playing with musical sounds, & doing things others could do, but didn't think of.....making people have re-hear what they didn't expect to hear. One great example that I would love for you to analyze, is her and Kelly price SANGING this same song. Saw this when it was on Motown live in the 90s, and I was like, "they're both amazing, but Chaka you're funny with the nuances/trumpet notes/jazz runs and MANY "vocal rollercoaster rides"" she was playing with in that song...much more than here, because she's SANGING with Kelly Price.

Mama Chaka is jazz, and so smart with her instrument. She knows the job is to color the language and move the story. She is a vocal stylist, a a vocal athlete or acrobat. Nothing wrong with being a vocal athlete and/or acrobat, but her approach to singing keeps the integrity of the song [composition] and her vocal ability. A lot of singers compromise one for the other. She keeps them in community with each other. Its spell-bounding to watch and/or hear at times.
There was a really amazing podcast I listened to recently and it featured some of her background singers circa 80s- 2010's. & They spoke about her singing style & her lax diction and one of them said she ate her up one night 😂 because she was singing every word with all the syllables, something Chaka NEVER does.
