The commentary about “same thing, different mechanics” while showing Digimon World made me burst out laughing. That game is as different from Pokemon as possible. You get one partner, have to clean it and feed it, and if you fuck up, it evolves into a literal shithead. I love all monster collection games, but Digimon =/= Pokemon. The only similarity is: “there are many monsters.” That’s it. Digimon and Monster Rancher are far more fitting of a comparison.
Digimon was also conceived as a male equivalent to Tamagotchi which was only aimed at young girls and wasn't even looking in Pokémon's general direction with its creation.
@@CrystalGreymon Yup. I loved Tamagotchi back in the day too. I still have a Tamagotchi Connection v1 in lime green. Memetchi (the series mascot) is my favorite.

What the hell is Arin saying “Twenty oh three” for? That just sounds weird and wrong. It’s two thousand and three. The “twenty X” really only becomes acceptable starting in 2010.

So. Now I finally know after 15 years, the bootleg Pokemon Diamond I played as a Gameboy Color Rom was actually Telefang. I've always wondered about it. Nice to see a solid conclusion to the curiosity.
Awesome to see you guys covering Telefang, a fun thing to note about the game is that you can make your own custom ringtones that you can assign to any telefang you want (so when that telefang calls you, you hear that ringtone). I made my ringtone the beginning part of megalovania... Hope you guys cover Medarot next, that is a massive series with 9 mainline games and a bunch of spin offs and only 2 spin offs, gba remakes of the 2nd mainline medarot game as well as the medarot anime got localized overseas with the name Medabotsm. The ps1 game Medarot R got a fantranslation though and there are a bunch of fan translations for alot of the other Medarot games as well as the manga and even the tcg in the works by different groups of people.
I actually got stung by the bootleg pokemon diamond when i was younger. I was staying at my aunt and uncles house, my uncle took me to the local game shop and i saw the bootleg diamond and thought i had found a new unknown release! The bootleged version was really glitchy and after a couple of hours (and me being very upset) we took it back and got a refund. I've had no idea what it was for the last 15+ years so its so cool to see it actually covered here!
I played these games as a kid, and I did learn that they were Telefang games...but this video is the ultimate Pokemon Diamond and Jade informational video! I love it!
I vaguely remembering a game where you take control of a "spirit" which based on different things you do alters its form and abilities. I distinctly remember my friend raising a "clown ghost" of some kind. I cannot remember anything else about that game, but the parallels to it and Pokemon were obviously inspired.
Now I remember, this is something that haunts me for many years, at some point in my childhood I got the Jade version thinking it was a new version of pokemon, in a market in Mexico.
When I was in vacation as a child on Fuerteventura, my parents bought us a game labelled "Pokemon Crystal" which turned out to be this game. I never knew what it was, but I was aware as a child that we got "cheated" and this "phone based" game isn't part of Pokemon. Thanks for letting me know what that game is we got there :)
I played this game when I was a kid a few times and it was absolutely wild. I was way too young to tell it was a bootleg, then slowly found out about it later in life.
Although it wasn't developed by Natsume, this game's soundtrack definitively sounds like Natsume's other NES games, like Shatterhand and Shadow of the Ninja!
Digimon wasn't inspired by Pokemon at all. Digimon started as a virtual pet (boy's equivalent of the tamagotchi, since they noticed not as many boys want to play with tamagotchis) and the first game, Digimon World 1, is based ENTIRELY on the Tamagotchi mechanics. You take care of your Digimon until it dies and then it starts over, so it's not really even a Monster Collecting game. Pokemon released in February 27 1996, while Tamagotchi released in November 23 1996. Arguably Tamagotchi came after but nobody argues that Tamagotchi is a Pokemon knockoff, do they? Yet Digimon is literally the same thing with an added training mechanic...
Bro I love you SO much, I didn't remember the names (Diamond and Jade when I was a child) of the first bootlegs you showed and I thought they were not real for some time, thank you I'll be downloading them again 😭✊💙

Man this bring back nostalgia, I've played the bootleg version (bought a gb cartridge that got like 5 game in 1 cart) and finished it too maybe now I'm gonna start playing the real game that have been fan translated.
“Kiss your loved ones.” That statement didn’t age well...
Why?
@@Sonicfalcon16 coronavirus....
Oh come on
After many many years since i played that weird Pokémon version, finally i know where it came from!
@@CrystalGreymon Sort of l. Tamagotchi as a toy started as gender neutral but girls were buying them 4 to 1 compared to boys. It became a girl's franchise after Digimon was introduced.
Honestly, the only similarity to Pokémon that Digimon has is the "-mon" suffix.
Thanks for the Video! I got Jade from my grandparents when we were on vacation in bulgeria, and tho i realized it was a bootleg, i pretty much enjoyed it (until it started crashing..) i never would have guessed, there was a whole forfotten franchise behind this game.. too Bad, we‘re never gonna see it again
It is 2020 why can't I teleport to alternative dimensions?
A game that takes place in 2020 being reviewed in year 2020... I think you guys have been saving this one, for this year.
What the hell is Arin saying “Twenty oh three” for? That just sounds weird and wrong. It’s two thousand and three. The “twenty X” really only becomes acceptable starting in 2010.
Hearing Arin on this Region Locked being so calm, studious, and direct without being overwhelming. It's different yet...amazing. And, I'm loving absolutely every second of this :)
I could go for more Arin reading this s way. I'm honestly enjoying it. It's so simple yet nice. Ya know?
Hey hey hey, When are you guys gonna cover Digimon and Monster Rancher. There has to be something cool on them too! >=U
Draycûn monster rancher has to be the most underrated video game series ever.
@@SentMyOwnWay It's certainly up there
Maybe the 100 or so japanese only Digimon games.
Okay not really 100 but there were plenty of Digimon games that only released in Japan. Even Digimon World 1 isn't the first Digimon game, it's the second.
@@RippahRooJizah yeah, Digital Monster Version S was the first right? I was watching some videos on it today, I wish there were OST videos of it cuz the music is kickass
So. Now I finally know after 15 years, the bootleg Pokemon Diamond I played as a Gameboy Color Rom was actually Telefang. I've always wondered about it. Nice to see a solid conclusion to the curiosity.
“In 20- oh two”
Nobody liked that
Awesome to see you guys covering Telefang, a fun thing to note about the game is that you can make your own custom ringtones that you can assign to any telefang you want (so when that telefang calls you, you hear that ringtone).
I saw those games on the JonTron show
I actually got stung by the bootleg pokemon diamond when i was younger.
Hey haven’t seen this guy this channel for a while
I played these games as a kid, and I did learn that they were Telefang games...but this video is the ultimate Pokemon Diamond and Jade informational video! I love it!
0:52 two thousand two !
Wow didn't even notice that was you Arin, nice job man
1:08 2020 huh
Rather than having rip off pokemon worlds we have coronavirus lol
We still have a few months, so it might be a possibility
I vaguely remembering a game where you take control of a "spirit" which based on different things you do alters its form and abilities. I distinctly remember my friend raising a "clown ghost" of some kind. I cannot remember anything else about that game, but the parallels to it and Pokemon were obviously inspired.
Arin - "I think we're pretty funny"
Yeah we know, you're always laughing at your own awful jokes
I bet your funny too
Nope, just stating one of the reasons I stopped watching grumps. That and Danny repeating some of his stories that he told a few times.
Now I remember, this is something that haunts me for many years, at some point in my childhood I got the Jade version thinking it was a new version of pokemon, in a market in Mexico.
Who tf says
"twenty oh two"
Who ever the fuck the narrator is
Arin also told us to basically give each other the kiss of death in these times. He forgot social distancing is in effect.
These videos are prerecorded weeks or even months in advance.
Dear god Arin sounds so much better when he's not doing his high-pitch game grumps voice
did not notice this was arin hansen until the end because of the tight oration
Hell yes, Arin Hanson doing voiceover for Region Locked. Just a great day and video all around.
So, the game is set on 2020, huh? Welp, now that we're in quarantine it's time to be isekai'd with through our phones to a pokemon bootleg world.
It's actually nice to see a video talking about Telefang and have it be informative and not mocking it and calling it a pokemon ripoff.
We're excited to watch this documentary. We're waiting for you!
Godammit, Telefang was the word I wanted to know the most!
I actually had this “pokemon diamond” cartridge, wasn’t bad
I feel so bad not realizing that it was Arin. Had game grumps playing on our TV minutes before. Amazing voice man!
