    I'm sure many have told you but put your hives where they can get some shade not out in the hot sun of where you live, you'll bake the bees. Also don't worry about the bees when you want to put the frames in the box, they will move out of the way and if you squish a few, which it happens, it's ok. You have 30,000 bees there, missing a few is ok. Also when you look for the queen keep the frame over the box because sometimes the queen will fly off. Don't be afraid of the bees you'll be protected in your suit. I don't always wear a suit when I'm in the hive. It's a fun hobby with great benefits of pollination and honey. I would order both a brush and a frame lifter to help you. The brush is to gently move the bees out of the way because they will build up quickly and you'll have to do splits which means you'll need more boxes and the frame lifter will help a LOT because the bees will glue everything down and it will become very difficult for you to lift the frames out. Also I'd either put a heavy rock on the top of the hive or a ratchet strap ( which is what I use ) to secure that top. Wind will do terrible things not to mention animals.

    you should put landscape fabric 10 feet around the hives cuz they hate weed eater noise.

    Bees are so enjoyable!! Get ready to find yourself spending hours watching them come and go and do their bee stuff.
    Don't stress over if your doing things right or wrong. There is no right or wrong way. You've probably read many books and watched many videos to prepare and so you'll find yourself questioning everything. Don't. The bees will be just fine and so will you.
    A few years ago we thru out the books, switched to an organic/least intrusive approach and us and our bees have never been happier. You'll find your style and what works for you, just don't drive yourself crazy on the way!

    You got this! Find a spot away from traffic, that gets morning sun, but shaded in the afternoon. Hives should be level. You might want to feed sugar syrup until they become established. Let them rest for about a week before you inspect again and then look for capped worker brood. Great idea to get two hives, as you can compare the development and share resources. Keep the nuc boxes for future expansion. Get a mentor, join a local beekeepers organization, watch lots of TH-cam videos and have fun with it!

    You guys are in for a wild ride. I raised bees in my teens and 20 and have 4 boxes now for my retirement project. My advice is find a mentor fast. Bee keeping is not like chickens, pigs, or cows.

    WAY TO GO!!!!! That was probably the most REAL I’ve seen any TH-camr video themselves putting in bees for the first time! I would be just like Lorraine but freaking out a WHOLE LOT MORE!!!! Congratulations for staying as calm as you did and for maintaining your composure!!! It must have been a surreal experience. But just one more step to self-sufficiency on your farm because without bees your gardens won’t survive! The world needs more bee keepers!! 🥰❤️🙏🏻🇨🇦

  • @mattsara2802
    @mattsara2802 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    😆 the bees will be calmer after they are in the box. They always fly all over when you move them to a new spot. Use a little smoke on the bees to get them to go down so it’s easier to grab the frames.

    If you are working with a nectar flow that single box could explode with bees in the next couple of weeks. You need to get several supers made up or you will be facing a swarming situation very soon. My own nucs are arriving in about a week but I already have several boxes made up so I can super the hives soon after I install the 5 frames from the nucs.

  • @jamesmoore5603
    @jamesmoore5603 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You want to press the frames together to maintain the proper spacing. Especially undrawn comb frames.
    -------
    If first frame is always the hardest to get out. Use the hook end of the tool to pry up the end by placing the heel on the adjacent frame. Then pry up the other end for easier lifting. Once there is the space 1st frame space just use the other end ot the tool to pry the next frame into the open space, making lifting it easier. When replacing the last frame the paddle end of the tool is just the right width for placing the last frame. Placing the -------------| ___| in the gap and using it to spread the frames on either side will create a space big enough for the last frame.
    ------
    Vibration excites the bees so always gently place the frames. No thuds.
    -------
    Work the bees from the back of the hive not in the flight path at the front.
    -------
    A couple puffs of smoke, not too hot smoke, under the cover and at the entrance is often enough smoke.
    --------
    Don't work the hive early or late in the day as more bee will be home. If a storm is approaching don't try and beat the storm by working your bees as again they will all be home and potentially more ornery.
    -------
    Great that you have two hives as you will learn more, and faster, as you can compare and contrast the hives. If the are both doing something you've never seen you can assume it is "normal" behavior. Like bearding at the entrance when it is hot.
    Have fun.

    You guys are creating your retirement opportunity and also providing her with a most enviable lifestyle. We need more families like you guys. Have fun
    Enjoy. p.s..and it's great the parents can participate.

    Just put in three hives. Had to keep them in the house for two days because of rain. I made a rookie mistake and didn’t put on my bee gloves and used my garden gloves. I had one hive that was very defensive. They stung me through the garden gloves six times. I sprayed them with sugar water it helped to calm down some. Love my bees sting and all. Good luck

    It will be fun watching you and the Hollar’s learning together. See what you do the same and what you do differently. Obviously got your bees from different places since their Queen was caged and they just dumped the bees in. Little more stressful for beginners the way you got them but you have a head start on tray build. Best of luck.

    Its great that you got into beekeeping. I am sure lots of commenters are giving you tips. I recommend that you take out more of the empty frames (at least 6 if you are putting 5 in). This gives you more room when putting in frames full if bees. This helps to avoid killing bees especially the queen. Then slide the other frames up to the frames with bees. And as others have said, get a mentor and maybe join a club. Also, if you decided to expand, you can put up swarm traps and catch free bees. When hives grow you can also split them if you want more colonies. Good luck.

    That is a project I might be able to do!
    My grandfather kept his bees under a non-fruiting tree (so us kids wouldn't go around the tree since we would have been climbing to steal the fruit) and the west side was close to a large blackberry patch so they would have some flowers close. The bee hives get very hot and if it it is a hot day it might be more difficult for the bed to keep it cool in the summer. But I don't know that much about bees. Good luck.
