I showed this to my husband, we live in Mexico in an area where we only get rain for three months of the year. I have him talked into letting me do this for our animals instead of using our water supply from the house.
Fantastic video Jason. As an Aussie its hard for me to understand why more people aren't already collecting every drop they can. Most of our country relies heavily on rainwater . In fact during a drought a few years ago ,the gov set up grants for city dwellers to have tiny rain tanks . A lot of bores that are here , prove so high in salinity or minerals that they're barely able to be used anyway or at best onlythose with big money can go deep enoughfor the good water . We have a dam but its been drying up quicker the last few years because we haven't even had minimum rainfall . Every time we put a roof over any structure, the first thing we do is get guttering and tanks on it. No one can survive without water. Our towns water has had problems for nearly 2 years with breaks in piping and filthy coloured water ,even bad bacteria a few times. It makes me so glad that my family is in control of our own water . I used 2 big IBC totes and 2 55 gallon drums to water all my plants and gardens here in Florida. Water is expensive here and we are charged for sewer based on how many gallons of water we use. We can go for weeks without any rain all fall and winter, the grass turns brown and crunchy and almost all of the plants will die without water. People would always say that I must have a huge water bill with all the plants and flowers looking so good. I'd tell them no, I use rain water and it's free. To make the barrels not stand out I bought some Bamboo roll up blinds that are commonly used on a porch or screen room to block the sun and give privacy. They go on clearance every year at the end of the season so not too expensive. I turned them on their side and wrapped them around the barrels. The tops were from the extra length that I cut off and glued to scrap wood and branches, leaving a space for the downspout. The 2 IBC totes were joined together and they were behind a 2 sided vinyl fence on the side of our garage along with the garbage cans. Nothing screamed blue or black rain barrels which my nosey, ever complaining neighbors would have had a fit about. It all worked great until a hurricane destroyed the whole area. Can't say enough good about them. I did put mosquito dunks into the barrels at times because they found a way past the screens. With so many people having Koi ponds or other decorative ponds they were easy to find at stores like Home Depot, Lows, garden centers and even some Walmarts.
I only have tank water on a rural block in New Zealand. Have a water filter on my kitchen tap so my drinking water is filtered. I have 20,000 water storage so have enough for my garden/food forest which is on 😊soak irrigation in summer

You could also hook up a pump to a battery. I have a couple of old RV pumps for this purpose. You obviously want to keep that set up protected in a little dog house or something.
Awesome Jason! Many years ago I made a water catchment system to capture water for my washing machine as our well water was so hard that it left deposits on our clothes! I used two black plastic garbage cans that I piggybacked! It worked great! I saved the grey rinse water to use for the next wash load! I was working at Home Depot at the time and the guys in plumbing thought I was a bit wacky but it saved me time and money! The most expensive thing was the pump I used to transfer the water but it paid for itself quickly! Necessity is the mother of invention! We are in the process of getting a new property ready for us to move to next spring! Water catchment and saving is high on our list of projects, even though we have a well!
Contribution from Oz…live in rural town with no town water, 100% of our house water is rain from the roof. Tank catchment is 100,000 litres for the house and 70,000 from shed buildings. Stock and garden requirements supplied by dams. It necessary here as much drier, we get a reasonable amount of rain by oz standards in the south 750 mm annually. Much less than you. We were without power for a week a few years ago due to a massive freeze event here in the Pacific Northwest, Northwest Oregon specifically. We get plenty of rain, however, in this event, we had no electricity to power our small community well. Thank God I had some preparations in place for an outage. I can see Jason buying another 1,000 gallon tank and putting it next to the other one and plumbing the two together to catch overflow from the first, and then Yeah! On the subject of water, find someone near you with a permaculture design certificate (PDC), or knowledge in a similar field. If you were to create a few swales/berms along the natural contours of your property, there would be a TON of benefits. You want the water to stay on your land for as long as possible, and allow it to soak into your soil and not only hydrate your plants, but help keep the well full! They could ultimately lead to the future pond area and keep it full as well!
Can you make a video on how would you use rainwater for human consumption in case of emergency? What purifying system would you use? We have thought about using the packages from P&G

Rain water is my garden water, we use ICB totes to collect as much as we can store for the almost rainless summer. It’s amazing how much water is needed to grow things. Last two years, i had sufficient amount for my garden. Great video, sir!

You have done great job with this water supply . Lots of people go Off grid and use rain water for drink as well , with water filters , off course . Also sollar panels for all the energy they need in the house and homestead. You made a good decision to harvest all your poultry before hurricane . Although I don't know if anybody in the area will be celebrating much this year . But whatever happens, you will have plenty of turkeys to eat all year round . God bless you 🙏 and give you peace .

I have a rain barrel and a private well. I would like more water storage but here in SE WI, we get below freezing temps for a month or two continuously. I have learned to value a rain barrel because we have been experiencing periods of six weeks or longer without rain. It saves wear and tear on our well pump and pressure tank. It also saves electricity. I don't have a large garden, but it requires water like they all do. It is also nice to have water to rinse hands as I work. I got many good ideas from your video. Thanks.
Hey Jason, Great, Great! PSA video on the importance of saving water. I have two rain barrels that I keep close to my garden and chicken run. No more dragging around hoses, plus the well water pressure is low by the time it gets way out to the garden. I actually brought one of my rain barrels when I moved recently from the west coat to my new east coast house. Even though in SC we get a lot of rain, there are weeks in the summer that it does not rain and it does not take long for the ground to dry out. This past storm dumped almost 4 inches of rain last week, but if we don't get rain soon again, I'll have to water my fall veggies. Keep up the great videos!
I too had the same experience at Lowes trying to find parts for my rain barrel. I was there for at least an hour with a worker helping me. We still didnt have the right parts
There are inexpensive gutter guards you can put on. Even hardware wire or window screen on the gutters. The totes I wound up with are not black so I will have to screen them or black them but I won't use paint. I won't be using lots of water at a time so have a small hand water pump to use.

I live in Texas. I try to keep a garden but I plan on adding water storage behind my barn. Yes we have dry spells. I built a storage system for water in Arkansas for our garden but due to deer pressure the garden didn’t do well. But I had water. I believe everyone should save water whether for emergencies or otherwise. ❤
I ve been saving in 45 gallon drums and yes you need that extra water , for power outages and I get a lot of them , have hens and pair of geese to make sure I got water , Thanks, great video again
you may want to try applying the teflon tape in the opposit direction. They way you wind it, it can unwrap when you thread the fitting in. Thank you for the videos
Here in Nor Cal, theres hardly any rain. 22" average. But if I was in an area where it was different, definitely would. Water is the source of life and having enough is a game changer.

Fantastic video very well put together. Full of great suggestions following your rain water collection journey. It is so important, water is life 🌧️🌧️🌧️☔️💦💦💧🫙☕️ Im in the UK and do collect rainwater from my house roof into a black water but. I use water from the water but / barrel and Filter it through a Berkley style water filter candle. I made a set up with two lidded plastic buckets. That I stand one on top of the other. In the top bucket I drilled a hole in the bottom that the filter candle fits into. The bottom bucket needs a hole in its lid for the filtered water to drip into and a spigot / tap fitted to the lower side. According to the info with my filter candles this should be perfectly safe for drinking. But as I have the ability I have always taken the added precaution of boiling the water before drinking. Either use it hot for coffee ect or allow to cool and poor into bottles or jars for using as needed. Been doing this for years. If the power, electric goes off I have a gas camping stove I can pull out to use for boiling water and cooking. Maintenance, Once a year I completely empty the water collection barrel and give it a wash out inside. The top filtering bucket needs cleaning out every couple of months and although it looks clean I wipe out the bottom one as well.. replace the filter candle as recommended on the pack.

Your leaf eaters not only filter out debris but also keep out the mosquitos! You can never have too much water on hand! Super helpful video.

Jason dig a hole in front of the 1000 galion tank valve so that you can fill a 5 gallon bucket. Line hole with pavers.

Have you tested rain water and know what it’s contaminated with from the sky and your roofs? I imagine there’s a fair bit of bird waste on roofs.
Jason, you need to wrap the tape around the treads in a clockwise direction, opposite to the direction you would tighten the fitting.

Here in Nor Cal, theres hardly any rain. 22" average. But if I was in an area where it was different, definitely would. Water is the source of life and having enough is a game changer.

Im in the UK and do collect rainwater from my house roof into a black water but. I use water from the water but / barrel and Filter it through a Berkley style water filter candle. I made a set up with two lidded plastic buckets. That I stand one on top of the other. In the top bucket I drilled a hole in the bottom that the filter candle fits into. The bottom bucket needs a hole in its lid for the filtered water to drip into and a spigot / tap fitted to the lower side.
According to the info with my filter candles this should be perfectly safe for drinking. But as I have the ability I have always taken the added precaution of boiling the water before drinking. Either use it hot for coffee ect or allow to cool and poor into bottles or jars for using as needed. Been doing this for years. If the power, electric goes off I have a gas camping stove I can pull out to use for boiling water and cooking. Maintenance, Once a year I completely empty the water collection barrel and give it a wash out inside. The top filtering bucket needs cleaning out every couple of months and although it looks clean I wipe out the bottom one as well.. replace the filter candle as recommended on the pack.
