His character PURELY existed in order to say that line, which is the entire problem with the film. There are a lot of people who LOVE the concept of “Grey area”. They think it makes things “mature” and “complex”. It’s sounds great... in idea. But 90% of people who attempt to tell “Grey” stories fail because Grey isn’t ACTUALLY more complex. It’s usually just bland.
I could be wrong but I think we’ll see a lot of people who lobbe this film for what they feel like it does symbolically for things they support like diversity, feminism, animal rights, etc. but in the end, I think it will age poorly as people realize that there’s not a tua;ly anybody to care about or root for in this film. I’ve already seen people talking about how great this movie is going to “for the kids!” Because of the social agenda it promotes, but I’m like “what kid is going to want to sit through this ultra-long, tedious, boring film?”
The Grey area stuff is going to bore kids more than it bored me. Who is the villain of this film? Kylo Ren? Nope. He’s just bad because Luke failed him and then outright refused to try to make it right. So is Luke the bad guy? Nope. Yoda doesn’t think so and neither should we, apparently. He was just following the dogma of the Jedi Order and their boring and apparently misguided teachings about The Force. So The Jedi need to go away says Luke and Yoda. Except then Luke says The Jedi are just beginning.
What? It’s not more interesting because it’s Grey. It’s just muddy, tedious, and too unfocused for something that’s pure fiction and doesn’t actually matter.

JazGalaxy I don't think this one was "feminist." I had that thought about the Force Awakens after I saw it for the first time, and before hearing any reviews or anyone talking about it. This one does have the animal cruelty stuff, but I don't think that's necessarily bad. People are going to hate on that aspect of the Last Jedi because it was shoehorned in. I guess some people might get upset that diverse characters were also thrown in without any consideration for the tone or pacing, but once again, that's really more of a problem with the writing than with the idea of diversity overall. 8 isn't nearly as bad as 7 in that respect.

You literally had the footage to take Leia out in a way that honored Carrie's wishes. I mean, she did not even serve a purpose in the film after her Superman scene. They had Leia flying through space as just some afterthought. It is sloppy and now it is gonna be a shit show trying to handle her character without being able to show her.

@@Yoda-wf6bu Finn’s character arc happened in The Force Awakens. Canto Bight has fuck-all going on in terms of his character since his development in that portion is completely washed away by the whole “not fighting what we hate, but saving what we love” scene, where his developed character has a chance to actually do something with that development, only for Rose to fly in at the last minute and basically say he was fine where he was at the beginning of the movie, since that’s exactly what Finn was trying to do at the beginning of the movie: save the person he loved, Rey (not romantically, at least according to RoS, they have, or at least had, legitimate chemistry and friendship). At the end of the movie, Finn has become more invested in the larger conflict at play and sees a chance to save a cause he now holds as being something he is willing to die for. Only for Rose to stop him and send him back to where he was at the beginning of the movie. So Finn never had an arc in this movie.

    • @i-deni-i5138
      @i-deni-i5138 ปีที่แล้ว

@@thegrapethief5514 so you just explained his arc in TLJ, lol. Imagine thinking a character has to die for his arc to be complete, or whatever. Rose saved him just as he wanted to save Rey, or everyone else for that matter. Tell me you wouldn't do the same. Tell me you'd watch a friend of yours risk their life for something that might not work at all. Finn's mere thought of sacrificing himself for the whole Resistance completes his arc.

    • @thegrapethief5514
      @thegrapethief5514 ปีที่แล้ว

@@i-deni-i5138 “Rose saved him just as he wanted to save Rey” that’s the point I’m making. That’s where Finn was at the beginning of the movie. He lacked much investment in the larger conflict at hand and solely cared about saving his friends. Which is essentially what Rose tells him to do at the end of the movie since his action at the end wasn’t completing his arc because he was going to die, it was completing his arc because he was now invested in the conflict and was willing to sacrifice in order to protect the cause. Rian didn’t even have to set up Finn dying, he could have just put his life in serious danger to protect the Resistance and it would have gotten his growth across. But no, Rose swoops in at the last minute and tells Finn that sacrificing himself to protect a cause he believes in is stupid because he needs to be a leader or “save what he loves” (EVEN THOUGH THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT HE WAS TRYING TO DO. God this movie is so fucking stupid and that scene in particular is hilariously ironic considering Rose’s actions directly caused lots of people to die and reduced the surviving Resistance to an even smaller number.) even though the movie earlier painted Admiral Holdo’s thing as extremely heroic and great. Again, Rian didn’t need to set up Finn sacrificing himself. But he jabaits us because that’s the only thing he’s truly fantastic at: ass pulls that come out of nowhere and completely wasting any setup because having a payoff to something you set up is “predictable” in his eyes. Finn had an arc in this movie. But Rose’s dumbass line sends him right back to where he was at the start of the movie.
Don’t believe me? Then maybe consider reading John Boyega’s interview where he talks about how he was treated in the sequel trilogy, and let me tell you that he does not have nice things to say about how he felt Finn was used in The Last Jedi. Then again you TLJ fans don’t seem to care what the actors think because of course only the writers could possibly have good ideas on what to do with characters and what they’re like.

Chris, I respect you, but I disagree with you on this one. Yes, this movie is unexpected, in the worst possible way, they cut off all interesting plot points in the movie. Who’s snoke? We don’t know. Why did kylo kill those students? We don’t know? Why is Rey so powerful? We don’t know. How can leiah use the force with no training when JJ specifically said that she had none? We don’t know. Why did kylo join snoke in the first place if he hated him? We don’t know. Why did Luke lose all hope because his student turned, but he didn’t lose hope when he fought literally the most powerful and evil being In the galaxy? We don’t know. We expected answers and we never got any, your misrepresenting lazy writing with it being unexpected. If that’s the case, i can shit on a poster board and hand it in for an art project, and i will deflect all criticism by saying its unexpected. You are completely wrong about Poe, btw. If he listened to Leia, and pulled out, everybody would be dead. He sacrificed a few bombers for the safety of the entire resistance. Also, there is now reason for Haldo to keep the plan away from Poe. If she truly thought he was a fly boy, keeping an “arrogant and hot headed” person like him in the dark is the worst possible solution. If she thought there was a spy on board, that would t have mattered because she revealed it to everyone when she started fueling the transports. A spy would be able to relay that message back to the first order in no time. That was just a classic plot hole.

I wouldn't be surprised if, with Carrie Fisher's passing as well with how the TLJ ended, they actually do another time skip for Episode IX, though not 30 years; maybe something like 10.
It would give a reason for why Leia wouldn't be there (they could say that Leia simply died of age or illness, but not before becoming another legend or something), how the Resistance could rebuild their numbers and military forces with new allies and their renewed vigor to keep fighting, and allow Rey and Ben to get more of a footing in their new positions as the last Jedi (who might try to succeed where Luke failed) and new Supreme Leader respectively.

People were fiercely divided over the prequels. Before that, there were a lot of people who disliked Return of the Jedi. The only difference now is the prevalence of social media. I don't need permission from a crowd of total strangers to like or dislike a film...why does anyone give a damn if the fandom aren't all in lockstep?

TheRikkarikna Yeah and when you take into account why everyone hated it, it’s kind of Ridiculous.
Some hated The force awakens cause it played it to safe and Had a similar story A New Hope, and fans hated last Jedi because it took too many risks.
You just can’t win with most Star Wars fans cause some of them are the same Fans who ruined the life of Jake Lloyd, and caused Ahmed Best(Jar jar) to nearly commit suicide. Those kinds of Star Wars fans can be scary man.
Ideally with the Prequels it was a Visual Story not Properly Executed to some extent and accompanying it with some otherwise Bad Acting direction, not the actors fault necessarily, it’s primarily the Fact George Lucas’s wasn’t much of a scriptwriter.
Then you get to the Sequels which succeed with most of what the prequels were trying to do only it’s drawback is that it’s held back by unoriginal planet locations, and The Last Jedi’s primary goal was to course correct that and leave the Conclusion on a Blank slate that could go anywhere with the final movie.
From what thumbnails have popped up most of the reception of Rise of Skywalker has been of hate, then again most of em are the same people who held onto The Last Jedi rather than moving on(And it Shows).
But despite that I am looking forward to how The Rise Of Skywalker Concludes the Story and if it’s bad the it’s bad, and if it’s good then it will be a great edition to my Star Wars collection. Got every Star Wars movie apart from the Holiday Special-for obvious reasons 😂

In episode 8, for an entire movie, we are given zero evidence to support a love interest in either Rey's character for Fin or in Fin's Character for Rey. This is analagous to Harry Potter's relationship with Hermoine in the Harry potter novels.

21:00 One of the themes of the movie is what it really means to be a hero:
    1) FINN wants to sacrifice himself, but ROSE knows it's not necessary... and she was right. The heroes are able to escape at the end.
    2) POE thinks that HOLDO is too focused on rules and that it's better to think with the heart... but HOLDO ends up being the real hero of the two.
    3) LUKE tells REY that jedis have been glorified. That in reality they're flawed people. That actually makes sense when you watch the prequels. They don't always make good decisions. One might argue that they indirectly caused ANAKIN's fall.

I feel like two of the things you mentioned (the animal cruelty sequence and the kid force-pulling the broom) are continuations of themes introduced in the Rebels TV series (and to some extent the prequel and original eras as well).
Bear with me for a minute: In regards to the Force, consider where the Light and Dark sides might be aligned on a third-party fantasy magical spectrum: The Magic: The Gathering Colour wheel, which includes, in order, White (Order & Justice), Blue (Logic & Technology), Black (Death & Ambition), Red (Chaos & Passion), and Green (Nature & Preservation).
The Sith are Centered in Black, with Red and Blue influences; the Jedi are centered in White, with Blue and Green influences. The Green Jedi influence is explored in the connections the characters have (throughout all 9 films honestly) with the various animals. Luke & the Tauntaun, Obi-wan and his giant lizard thing, Ezra and the Space Whales from Rebels - many important Jedi have some kind of inherent or learned connection with the natural world and animals/plants (the Green influence).
The animal cruelty section, while a little heavy handed and admittedly out of place, fits into this theme of the animals being important and connected to the force, and their helping of Finn and Rose is due not only to having received their assistance in escaping, but Finn's force sensitivity as hinted at throughout his arcs in the films. I agree this subplot is easily the worst part of the film but I can see what themes they were trying to reinforce (albeit largely unsuccessfully).
The kid force-pulling the broom is clearly a continuation of the idea that force sensitivity can come from anywhere. Ezra in Rebels. The Republic era Jedi child recruitment program. Rey and her "nobody" parents (though this is stupidly retconned in Episode 9). This ties into the larger theme of "balance in the force" essentially being a millenia/galaxy-spanning mystic influence that drives times of affluence and oppression equally, but at the end of the day is self-correcting (too much Jedi hubris/complacency? Order 66. Too much Dark Side? Rey kills Palpatine.) Similar to how Yin and Yang are seen in ancient Chinese philosophy.
Which leads into why so many people were disappointed with the direction Luke Skywalker took in this film. They wanted to see Original Trilogy Badass Space Wizard Luke come in and kick the fucking door down on the First Order and fuck shit up. I totally get it. If that's what you were expecting it would be a huge disappointment. But I actually really liked Luke's direction in this movie and thought it was a mature continuation of the themes described above. He realized it was ignorant and self aggrandizing of the Jedi to assume that the universe could not survive without them. He realized that the Force is so much bigger than that; that it goes beyond the tiny minds and egos of Jedi and Sith alike. This is the lesson that Luke tries to teach Rey on the island: "That the Force does not belong to the Jedi. To say that if the Jedi die, the light dies, is vanity."
You don't have to be a Jedi to be a "good" Force user (Ahsoka Tano after she leaves the Jedi order) or a Sith to be an "evil" Force user (Nightsisters of Dathomir) and honestly the galaxy might be better off without the Jedi and Sith (look at all the conflict that has arisen because of them specifically). Good and bad people come from everywhere and, more importantly, there are shades of grey. The forces of good and evil will continue to ebb and flow, rise and fall, and clash/balance out over the eons with or without the Jedi/Sith. To ascribe more importance to them than their actually is is vanity in the grand cosmic scale of things (Yin and Yang).

The bad guy as a damaged, narcissistic te, needy teenager. Also loved the design of this film, the use of the colour red, the golden stormtrooper suit, the dingy interirors vs battle scenes in the daylight. The CGI creatures were all interesting to look at. The Last Jedi is B+ for me.

13:10 something i noticed rewatching this was a bit of subtle foreshadowing they pull off earlier to this. When Kylo and Rey do the force FaceTime thing for the first time and they don’t know what’s going on Kylo says something to Rey along the lines like “how is this happening you’re not doing this, if you were you’d be dead”. Thought that was a pretty nice plant there in the dialogue, which the dialogue in this movie is pretty underrated in my opinion, especially for a Star Wars movie

    • @geetadhumane5793

The dialogues are good when they are not trying to be humourous. The worst part of TLJ is the force humour. Except for the Luke Rey scene, all the humor in this movie lands flat and seems deliberate. I guess it is a bi product of Disney

What bugs me the most about this movie is that the villains are in Disney mode in their actions and instead of doing the most logical and efficicient thing, they prefer a more evil-looking option that leave the good guys the chance to win/flee everytime. There is no sense of threat because of that. There is even a very good video ''A military analysis of the Last Jedi'' that covers a lot.
In the first scene, the Resistance is fleeing with a few ships, and the First Order comes in with a good number of ships, including a dreadnought (a fleet killer, as Poe puts it), and always great numbers of tie-fighters. The First Order could have immediately engaged the Resistance with their destroyers and sent thousands of tie-fighters, while letting the dreadnought destroy the planet base or capital ships. Nah nah nah, too logical. Instead let's sit everyone back and make the dreadnought, which is highly vulnerable to bombers and fighters and can only shoot every few minutes, do all the job.
Not destroying Poe, when anyway Hux said there would be no negociations and the Resistance would be destroyed, but does NOTHING and just lets everyone escape. This way Hux becomes a punching-bag subordinate.
On the other side, the Resistance sent its entirely inefficient and outdated bombers against the dreadnought and destroyed it. A few useless bombers were destroyed in exchange of destroying a fleet-killing humongus ship carrying thousands of enemies. Good? Nah nah nah. According to Leiah, Poe should have retreated and left enemy ships intact.
In the main scene, the Resistance fleeing the First order and having only a few hours of fuel left, everything is also wrong. Resistance ships have their rear shields and cannot be destroyed by Snoke's ship's guns. Should the First Order send a few destroyes in their vulnerable front in a short lightspeed jump, or even send their fleet of tie-fighters (which I am sure they had lots in Snoke's ship). Nah nah nah. Instead let's wait and give the Resistance a while to find a way to escape once again. The First Order sent a handful of tie-fighters, which dealt a lot of damage to Resistance ships and decapitated their leadership. Send more to finish them? Nah nah nah, too efficient. In the end by wasting time like that their own fleet got crippled with hundreds of thousands dead and the hands of a single ship.
Meanwhile the Resistance got led by one of the most hateable character in the movie (apart from Rose) in the form of a purple-haired, I'm-a-strong-woman-and-you-are-wrong, vice-admiral Holdo, who dresses for a soirée instead of a war for survival with military necessities. She immediately insults Poe, who is a GODDAMN HERO OF THE RESISTANCE WHO BLEW UP STARKILLER BASE AND SAVED THE WORLD, by saying that HE is incompetent and should not know of her plan. She does not tell anyone of her plan, or that she has one, so everyone around think they are going to die, and start a mutiny.
And of course when on the salt-desert planet the Resistance send outdated vehicles to destroy the base-destroying cannon that was being readied, Poe ''learns'' that he was too reckless in the past and withdraws them after they sustain casualties (which made the attack useless), and when Finn tries to SAVE EVERYONE by sacrificing himself on the cannon, of course he gets rammed by Rose (which should have killed both of them). Note that the First Order walkers had them both right in front of them and just let them walk off to the base.
There is no sense of threat because of that. In the original trilogy we all laugh of Imperials and especially stormtroopers, but hell they were better. In New Hope, the officers talking about strenghts and weaknesses of the Death Star made sense. In Empire Strikes Back, the fleet is being commanded by Darth Vador and the very able admiral Piett (after he ''replaced'' the incompetent Ozzel). They apply overwhelming force with walkers on Hoth, chase down the Falcon, find it using every asset available (bounty hunters), ambush the heroes in the Cloud City, disable the Falcon's hyperdrive, and it is only by extreme skill and luck that the heroes were able to escape, because the bad guys were efficient. But here litterally nothing makes sense, it is a kafkaesque world in which logic is reprimanded.

Andrew Joseph Fabo I honestly think them teaming up would be too predictable, and they are doing something more than just good and evil. Multiple times in the film, characters reference how the war between good and evil is never-ending and that in the end, no one side is truly one or the other. So, When Kylo tells Rey that he wants to burn it all down and restart, he's not entirely wrong. The empire will always come back in some unless there is no rebellion in some way. The question is not who is good or who is evil, but rather how do we stop this war? There are no easy answers In the film, and that's why I can't wait for episode IX. For the first time in a long time, I don't know what happens next in Star Wars

Luke himself admits that he had a moment of darkness and ignited his saber and almost immediately regretted it and never did anything. Also it was pretty well established that Kylo was already turned to the dark side by Snoke by this point went batshit crazy and massacred almost the entire jedi academy Anakin-style and thought he even killed Luke or left him for dead. What do ppl not understand about how that would change Luke. How could anyone still be the same person after something like that. I mean com-on, Obi-wan literally dismembered Anakin and left him for dead burning to death in a lake of lava for god sakes because he turned to the dark-side. I don’t think what Luke did was unlike him at all when you really think about it.

Not one word of what you said is true Beth B. We are given two perspectives of the same event and you have decided that only one perspective is correct when in fact, both are.

This is my argument to "Luke killing young Kylo is butchering the character":
FIrst off, if you met 14 years old Hitler and knew what atrocities he would execute in the future, you bet your ass you'd at least be tempted to kill the boy.
Secondly, wtf why do they think Luke is some kind of perfect all round saint? In the originals there were at least two or three times he fell to the dark side. He struck down an "unarmed(of course Palpatine was armed with his force lightning but Luke didn't know that)" old man with intent to kill just because he was taunted to do so. He struck his own father out of pure rage, almost killing him in the process. It was only the Palaptine's premature taunting "DO IT" that snapped Luke out of it and saved him from falling down to the dark side. Luke is not Jesus Christ; he is highly emotional character and almost fails A LOT.
Third, it's called a fucking character arc. In the originals his arc was a journey from young whiny boy to a jedi. In the sequal series, it's his transformation from a failed teacher to a true jedi master. It's what makes him human, and not emotionless godlike character.

Varys// I also wish they flashed out more of Kylo's initial fall, and I'm assuming they are planning to make some spin off series like tv series or books on that background story (mmm money money money). But to play the devil's advocate here, it was demonstrated time and again that a force user can detect another force user from far far away, so I don't have hard time accepting Snoke could find young Kylo easily. And Kylo felt he was abandoned by his parents when he was sent to Luke's jedi training ground, and it's not entirely uncommon for kids of that young age who were sent away from home to places like boarding school or whatever to have that rage-like feeling towards the parents and the people around them.
But yeah, we could've used more background information on.....you know, Snoke. It was classic fan theory bait.

A third of the movie is spent with Finn and Rose going on a wild goose chase rather than fleshing out important characters.

Can we talk about the Light speed crash near the end? One of the best effects shots I've seen in a while.

Kirby already did it in the Subspace Emissary.
And he did it without getting any of his buddies killed. :\

Why was Yoda back to being crazy Yoda before he reveals himself to be the Jedi master? Makes no sense.
