      I saw the original trilogy in Special Edition form. That in mind, I still think Return of the Jedi and Revenge of the Sith are the two best Star Wars films.

      And I believe that Revenge of the Sith is a better film than Empire or A New Hope, since it has a more noticeable character arc for both the protagonist and the antagonist, the themes and imagery are a lot more striking, the action was a lot better (I mean, did they have _one_ space battle in Empire?), and the two films Sith and Jedi complement each other perfectly, both portraying the "What if" scenario of the other.

      +Ikrani The action in Sith is gratuitous and overdone to the point that it's boring, especially the Obi-Ani fight. The acting is humorously bad, and the writing is so poor that Ewan could barely keep a straight face in some scenes.

    A good critic rates a film off of the quality of the script, direction, acting, dialogue, logic, choreography, cinematography etc. NOT how much they enjoy a film. Don't get mad just because he didn't do a shitty job. The film has flaws, Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes both gave this movie a lower score than Ep 3 ROTS while Ep 4 and Ep 5 are up in the 90s. This was a great review and even though this film is in my top 5 films of all time I am super glad Chris wasn't bias and clarified everything. A+ Review

      I've always said the order from best to worst goes:
      5
      4
      3
      6
      2
      1
      1 & 2 are about the same bad to me but I agree with critics that Episode 3 is better than Episode 6

    • @Derpalon
      @Derpalon 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +peterthesneakybastar A good critic understands that quality and enjoyment are intertwined, particularly if you're evaluating a medium that is fundamentally designed to try and entertain you. It's silly to rate based on factors that don't actually contribute to your enjoyment, because that defeats the movie's entire purpose. I'm not watching Star Wars as a documentary to learn about space-faring civilizations; I'm watching it to entertain me. Why would I care whether it does something "right" that has nothing to do with my actual enjoyment of the film? Also a good critic recognizes that script, direction, dialogue, etc. all contribute to enjoyment anyway, which is the whole reason why we have established them as factors to evaluate against in the first place, and furthermore the significance of a flaw should be taken into consideration, not just whether it exists or not. Most of the flaws Chris points out are arguably nitpicks, and others are flaws that apply to the previous films but he ignored before. I appreciate that Chris is trying not to look like a fanboy here, but the way he could have done that is by being consistent from the beginning rather than suddenly and arbitrarily deciding to take his magnifying glass out for Return of the Jedi while giving the previous films a free pass.

    • @peterthesneakybastar
      @peterthesneakybastar 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Derpalon Films are considered art. It's supposed to bring out original significant interest emotionally to the viewer rather than entertainment. There are some films that are incredibly sad and not entertaining whatsoever but get perfect reviews because of the insane ideology of the movie. As a critic you are not supposed to let your own biases get in the way. For example 300 is a guilty pleasure for me however I understand that it's terrible. Chris and many other critics often find themselves in the same situation. If we listened to critics for their sense of enjoyment it would be pointless because of the opinionated varieties while quality on the other hand is a much more interesting and agreeable subject. Sure it's helpful if a critic shares how much they enjoyed it but the overall score has very little with entertainment. Chris's review was perfect

    • @Derpalon
      @Derpalon 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +peterthesneakybastar "original significant interest"
      I don't know what this means. Star Wars is very much an entertainment piece, but art and entertainment aren't mutually exclusive. Art is in a way a form of entertainment; we consume it as a way to appreciate and enjoy things. "Bias" is being used loosely here. I consider bias to be things like making criticisms that weren't applied equally to the other movies. You seem to be using "bias" to mean any assertion of opinion rather than fact. But the thing is, all assertions of quality with regards to art and entertainment are necessarily assertions of opinion. Even Chris has admitted this on occasion. That's why review scores already can and do vary so much, and it's also the beauty of media criticism; that there can be so much plurality of opinion. If we already knew the score Chris was going to give because he has to follow some supposed preexisting rigid criteria that all professional critics are required to follow, then this would have been a boring and predictable review.

    • @johnnietorch1598
      @johnnietorch1598 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Derpalon At the end of the day, Chris is doing the typical "Only two Episodes are really that good- I used to like ROTJ best, but blah,blah,blah, nitpicks- The PT is awful, well, ROTS is 'OK'...kinda- OOT 4EVA!" shtick that everyone does down the line. I still like Chris, but this is the same koolaid everyone making SW reviews dispenses.....

    Slave Leia still shouldn't bother you. This isn't portrayed as a positive experience, she was captured while risking her life to save someone and the slave outfit was a way to humiliate her. She's a princess, after all. The Romans took delight in making royals they captured do things that were "beneath them" in front of a crowd. The kicker is that she uses her chains to choke her captor to death and then blows his yacht up. To me, that still shows a powerful character in Leia and this shouldn't be something Star Wars should be ashamed of.

    ROTJ is easily my favorite OT movie. I understand that the middle is a drag, that the beginning had no definitive plan to save Han, and there’s admittedly that stupid Ewok situation. However, my favorite moments in Star Wars come from this movie. I agree, I love the “Boba Fett, Boba Fett where?” line. But as far as emotionally moving scenes, this movie packs the biggest punch. Luke and Vader’s first conversation on the platform is one of the best in all of Star Wars, but what tops that off is the final duel. I see so many pass this duel off, but this is the perfect culmination of not only the last two movies, but every little moment from Anakin’s debut, to his fall, to this last stand. Vader’s full character is displayed and Luke’s mettle is confirmed. Then the music hits, the chorus roars into that low tumbling that is the turmoil felt by both. We see a visible struggle between their very blades and the silhouette of the two, with Luke fully extended and Vader backing down. This is Star Wars my friends.

    Chris, FYI, the Rancor wasn't stop motion, it was a rod puppet that was operated by several people, that's why it's movements look so smooth compared to the traditional Harryhausen style slightly jerky stop motion stuff.

    • @jameshanscombe2530
      @jameshanscombe2530 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Phil Tippet mentioned how fast the film was running through the camera so when it played back at normal speed the Rancor had real mass and bulk. Basically a high pitched motorised whine for a few seconds and then the reel was done. They had to move really quickly to register all the little moves.

      Go motion is something else. It's what they used in Empire with the Tauntauns. It's basically to avoid the strobo-like effect that you get when doing stop motion: Your frames end up too clear. Go motion -- basically moving objects while the camera shutter is still open -- adds some motion blur, so the shot looks more natural and the creatures more believable.

      @@XphantomgamerTBH, I don't find the Ewoks
      in Episode VI, to be that annoying. But when I
      first saw it, I was kind of more or likely expecting
      the Ewoks to have that kind of barbaric, "I will
      rain down the blood of my enemies" kind of feeling
      with some decapitation going on rather than
      using bows and arrows, rocks while being attached
      to ropes as they throw them, and logs to smash and tip over the AT-ST Walkers just by
      cutting the ropes. Using axes, swords, and shields, while bearing armor
      that is invincible to laser fire would've
      been better to take down the Stormtroopers in the movie.

    I think Return of the Jedi is the best one honestly. It is a redemption story. Vader redeems himself by saving his son. Lando redeems himself by helping to save Han, and participating in the battle of Endor. Han redeems himself by not leaving the alliance, and Leia and completing the job that he was always meant to do. I actually liked the Ewoks too. Small backwoods creatures that were brave enough to do something seemingly impossible for them. Like the American Revolution, farmers and shop owner made soldiers who took on a tyrannical empire and actually won. "THE SHEILD IS DOWN! COMMENCE ATTACK ON THE DEATHSTARS MAIN REACTOR!"

    • @hv3115

      Good points except for the Ewoks. The Ewoks were and continue to be sh!t. They were a blatant attempt by Lucas to market and sell toys. And they were a sign of how everything Star Wars by Lucas henceforth was going to be sh!t.

      Nor can I. He might've been one of the most ingenious things about the prequels if Lucas hadn't gotten cold feet from the backlash.
      Plus, I never found him that annoying. He was just stupid, his stupidity never dictated the plot, and I found the scene of him destroying droids and tanks by the sheer power of his own ineptitude to be utterly hilarious.

    I recently watched the original trilogy simply because ep7 looks so good. I have to say that Return of the Jedi was by far my favourite. Yes it had flaws, but the confrontation between Luke and Darth Vader was so well done, that it just made it my favourite. I wish the scene where Luke tells Leia that they're twins would have been handled in the same way, but im ok with how it was done.

    • @DavisWOW
      @DavisWOW 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Victor duarte I rewatched the originals after the second trailer dropped in april. And tho ep IV and V were very-very good, imo ep VI isnt rly a good movie. It has very epic moments (e.g: Luke vs Vader scene was the best in the whole series imo, filled with so much emotions and a masteriece work of music) but overall I can feel the prequels atmosphere too much. I mean 2nd death star? Ewoks? And even Leia as Luke's sister was a bad chice of writing imo. I think around 81-82 was the time when Lucas started turning to the dark side...

    • @christopherhenderson1123
      @christopherhenderson1123 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +DavisWOW The 2nd Death Star had a virtually impenetrable shield. On paper, it makes perfect sense. The shield generator is actually inside the shield itself, so the only way to get into the shield is if the Empire lets you in. It's genius, really. In the end, the Rebels had to outsmart the Empire to allow them into the shield, fought the Battle of Endor to destroy the shield generator which was an amazing feat in itself, and successfully maneuver the inner workings of the the Death Star in order to do what they intended to all along. There were also many times where it felt hopeless for the Rebels. I'd imagine it would be very suspenseful for someone watching it for the first time. Also, I'd be more worried about the 3rd Death Star that's on one of the The Force Awakens movie posters... As for the Ewoks, they are fine in my book, but I completely understand why a lot of people hate them, so that's a valid reason to dislike the movie.

    • @DavisWOW
      @DavisWOW 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christopher Henderson Although the 2nd death star might makes sense (however with that logic the 3rd or 4th or any more should make aswell) imo it was a bad choice of writing. I mean there is that big superweapon in one of the most famous movies of all time, so what should we do? Oh dont worry, just make another one! I think the death star should've been unique and Lucas should've come up with something else, because if you can make another one, the first one becomes less awesome imo. Ofc logic wise it makes sense, but wrting wise, as a story imo it was a bad choice (and L. Kasdan agreed with me, he left the project mainly because of the 2nd death star idea)
      And Lucas actually made a 3rd death star. In TPM the Trade Feadration ship was a miniature death star aswell (with a belt).
      And the Ewoks arent the main thing which annoy me (tho it was childish, and made only for toys), but the whole ending battle on Endor was so clumsy and unserious. Han didnt rly do anything other than beeing clusmy... The whole thing looks lie they forgot that that scene is supposed to be the big ending of the star wars trilogy.
      And the original yup-nub was also ridiculous imo. I mean how can you end the greatest movie-franchise ever created with that music? The new music should've been the original one.
      And Leia shouldnt be Luke's sister imo. It ruined the love-triangle (not to say about other things...). I know that Vader as Luke's father was a brilliant idea, but as with the death star, they shouldnt force one idea to every episode. Imo not everyone should be some others relative, Star Wars is not a brazilian soap opera...
      So overall the movie isnt bad, but not good either imo, it was the first a prequel-kind of star wars. I hope JJ turns the series to a more serious tone. It dont have to be over-dramatic, but leave the childish storytelling to other franchises...

      +Adalwulf Okay...Is it the horrible lines of dialogue that makes it a better movie? Or...is it the bad acting in the movie, perhaps? Is it Anakin's sudden turn to the Dark side that feels rushed and not developed enough? The fact that he kills children immidiately after...for some reason? Maybe it's the horrible fight betwen Mace Windu and Palpatine? Or the scene right after the fight? "UNLIMITED POWEEEEER". Never fails to make me laugh...
      The "I have the high ground" scene that really makes no sense when you think about it? The inconsistencies in the plot, maybe? Is it Anakin's and Padmé's love story? To me it's one of the worst love stories ever put on screen but maybe you saw something I didn't...Is it these things that makes Revenge of the Sith a better movie?
      I'm not saying that Return is a perfect movie because it's not. But it's a far better movie than Revenge IMO.

    The Rancor was not stop motion photography, it was a puppet shot with a modified 35mm Nikon camera with a wide lens (like the one later used to film the mine-car chase in Indiana Jones a year later). The film was shot at a slightly higher frame rate and then played back 24fps to create a sense of mass to the creature, and then a slow shutter speed helped create some motion blur. Too bad the old-school blue-screen optical composition doesn't hold up in the scene. It would have been good if Lucas fixed it on the special edition - great scene! Love ya man!

    • @bencurtin573
      @bencurtin573 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Radioactive Since 1990 Yeah, it really just shows Luke's pure rage, and after cutting off Vader's hand, realizing that the Emperor is winning and that he's becoming his father. Plus, that entire final Luke vs Vader is like the best lightsaber duel in all 6 movies, even though 3 of those movies don't really exist... but really, I think it is. It just barely tops the Cloud City fight between Luke and Vader, because you really get to see more of what Luke can do now, and it definitely tops any fight in the original 1977 "Star Wars" (NOT CALLED EPISODE 4: A NEW HOPE) and definitely tops anything in Attack of the Clones. The final fight in Revenge of the Sith is cool, but it goes on for way too long and the choreography is so perfect to the point that Anakin and Obi-Wan look like they're just air dancing. The Darth Maul fight and the Cloud City fight are the only two Lightsaber Duels that get close to the Return of the Jedi fight-as I said, Cloud City doesn't show what Luke can do as well, and the Darth Maul fight is great, but the Choreography is again.. just a tad bit too perfect that the fight doesn't have much meaning, and doesn't have that part of just pure rage expressed from Luke at the end of Return of the Jedi.

    Right?

    • @timcarmody4267
      @timcarmody4267 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's complicated.
      In the film, Mon Mothma refers to it as the "moon of Endor", but Vader just calls it Endor. I'm not sure if anyone else calls it by name.
      To explain this discrepancy, the short (and official) version is that Endor is the moon of a gas giant also called Endor. In the Endor binary system. The stars haven't been named (as far as I'm aware), but by this pattern I'd guess they're Endor and Endor.
      The longer version is that it depends what source of information you use. By most accounts, Endor (moon) orbits Endor (planet). By others, Endor is a moon without a planet (I think the term 'rogue moon' is used). Which obviously strains the definition of 'moon', but the story was that the moon had survived the planet's destruction, and while it was now functionally a planet, still got called a moon out of habit or tradition or something. I don't recall if the destroyed planet was also named Endor or not. And all of that got retconned at some point by calling it an elaborate hoax. And most of this has been thrown into Legends discontinuity.
      Either way, the moon is named Endor.

    I subscribe to the belief that Han should have died in Empire. Not only does it mean he can't be around in Jedi to do basically nothing, but it also gives Leia a second wind to find the Empire again.
    I mean, after the events of Empire Strikes Back, everyone's gotta be pretty tuckered out with this war. Having Han die and be like a sort of martyr would have introduced a host of opportunities with the story and Leia

      +TheGoldenCaulk Yeah no, I wholeheartedly disagree. Han being put on ice and captured at the end of ESB setup dramatic beats for both movies that were damn near perfect, and vital. The sense of despair and uncertainty at the end of ESB was the perfect way to end the film (had Han died then it'd be more like a sense of sadness and revenge). And having all our main heroes get back together again to fight alongside each other at Jabba's was pivotal to conveying the evolution of all the characters. Also, Ben already served as that martyr figure in ANH so it would just be a repeat of that trope.

    Han wasn't mad at Lando because Lando was on Tatooine rescuing him...why would he be mad?

    • @JoeTufanoTheMovieGuy
      @JoeTufanoTheMovieGuy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michael Rosenow Exactly! I feel like that Han saw Lando had come back with Luke to help rescue him and Han had grown more as a character by this point in the series that he probably decided to let bygones be bygones. Would it have been nice to have a scene of dialogue where we see them let it go? Perhaps, but I honestly don't really mind it much.

    Out of all of the Original Trilogy this was my favourite as a kid (like Chris Stuckmann and Oliver Harper) and it's still my favourite of the Original Trilogy. Due to the action sequences, in particular the Sarlacc Pit sequence, the story in the 3rd act and THE WHOLE SPACE AND ENDOR BATTLE!!!!!!!
    The whole Luke vs Darth Vader fight is fantastic, leading to one of the best shots in cinema: Luke's face covered in light and shadow.
    The Ewoks are great: They're cuties that can eat you if they want to. Oh and no matter how many times I see this, whenever I see the Millennium Falcon fly out of the Death Star as it explodes, I punch my fist up in the air in triumph.
    This film just brings back so many great memories to my childhood.

      Isn't that the saddest thing ever??? I remember when I saw it in the movie theater, to see the actor underneath Vader's mask come back as a spirit, such a poignant and exquisite moment, to only be replaced by that stupid wooden boy in the remasters 15 years later was a slap in the face. I hate Hayden C. I just want to lightsaber him and Natalie wooden woman into oblivion. That said, I am thrilled that I have both versions so I can choose what I want to see...

    Not really sure where Chris gets the idea that this film's special effects don't hold up as well compared to the previous two films. A New Hope by far had most noticeably aged, particularly by the lackluster duel between Obi Wan and Vader, as well as a scene where Luke turns on his saber and you can obviously tell they had to jump to another cut in the middle of it. Not to mention some space scenes of TIE fighters and X wings looked unnatural, like they were almost "wobbling" and weren't really floating around in space, and you didn't notice this as much in V and VI. Also if you want to talk about anti-climactic and rushed deaths, hello? Obi-Wan anybody? There was barely any time spent mourning him when he passed away. Time-wasting scenes like Ewoks cooking Han and the gang? How about the fact that Episode IV wastes at least a good 10-15 minutes of the movie with C3PO and R2 just aimlessly wandering the desert. I was certainly not engaged by that any more than I was by the Ewoks.
    I'm disappointed that Chris puts a skeptical eye on Return of the Jedi for what seems like only because the consensus generally views ROTJ as the weakest of the trilogy, so he's gotta pander. There are plenty of flaws in the other movies too if you actually bother to look. Personally I consider Episode IV to be the weakest of the trilogy, but I still highly appreciate what it started and what it accomplished for film.
    Otherwise good review. Can't wait for Episode 7.

      +Derpalon When I saw ROTJ in the theater the blue screen lines were pretty obvious. That stuff got cleaned up in the special edition release. A New Hope can be forgiven for some stuff because they were pretty much learning on the job.

    • @sofiaa1616
      @sofiaa1616 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Kolumaic Not only that, but I also feel like Star Wars (1977) was more aware of it's special effects limitations and tried to clever maneuver around it through a good use of editing. So I feel like the first movie makes more of an effort to hide these flaws, but Return of the Jedi gets a little too confident about it that it shoves in your face. This is one instance where I'm actually torn about the Special Editions, which I normally hate. I do like how the Special Edition of RotJ polishes some of the special effects, but I hate some of the stupid shit it adds.

      I don't think it's fair to judge this movie off the original copy since the re releases everyone hates fixed that. I wish people would stop complaining about them. For whatever reason people think of the Jabba and Greedo scene but forget the countless amount of CGI problems they fixed.

    • @Derpalon
      @Derpalon 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Kolumaic Sure, and I can understand that perspective, but the question here isn't whether the movies' special effects flaws are more "forgivable" as a product of their time, it's whether they stand up to modern effects, and the reality is A New Hope's don't stand up as well as the two sequels, so for Chris to claim A New Hope's are literally "flawless" while nitpicking away at ROTJ just comes off as questionable.
