i drank the Klim Koolaid many many years ago. I love their product I do agree Klim is costly however, i have gotten a lot of years out of my gear. I tend to wear my gear until i look like a homeless rider. I hate breaking in new gear. Love to see a review on when you have used MSR gear for a few years. Always fair and honest reviews
I bought the jacket and pants to do the PA wilds BDR-x. This is my first set of expensive riding gear and I’m happy I went with MSR. Rode thru pouring down rain, wind, light snow, 25+mph crosswinds and didn’t get wet. There are a few quirks with the jacket, but don’t they all have them. The outside pockets are too high for ease of use and they only button close, so they aren’t waterproof obviously. Other than that, I stayed 100% dry.
Thorough review in all respects. Appreciate your attention to detail on what makes a versatile, functional suit. While I'd rather RM had included a pant/jacket zipper connection, I know I can add suspenders if needed.
Thanks for the solid review. It seems like a great option to the kit that’s pushing 4 figures. My one gripe with nearly every motorcycle jacket I’ve come across is the lack of of arm pit vents. They do more to help stay cool than arm vents.
The jacket looks about 3” shorter in the front overall than what might be ideal in the size you chose, very evident in the placement of the “waist” location. The front pouch pockets openings are in turn much higher than convenient to easy access from the top. The impingement issue at the inside of the elbow is a complete deal breaker, that type of “minor” interference is an overwhelming PITA when on a multi day ride. Promising development value-wise but not quite “finished” in critical aspects that make long term ownership and extended use a pleasure.
Appreciate the review. Good stuff. Funny, I have the Carlsbad set up and like it a lot but now feel the need to grab the MSR gear (which I will). Keep up the good work.
I love that RMATVMC and MSR have quality gear at affordable prices. My two boys and I are using the Base Layer, Mid Layer and the Xplorer gear and are able to ride comfortably in Utah and California cold weather without breaking the bank.
I really appreciated this review. I also watched the Dork in the Road one. I have been shopping for a new water resistant/proof jacket and pants. I have KLIM and Olympia gear now. I like the KLIM gear and bang for your buck I like Olympia but it has not held up as well as the KLIM stuff. To be fair, I have been buying KLIM gear because I had a pro/ambassador deal with KLIM. I am a part time writer and many many riders (20K/story) see pictures of me in my articles often head to ankles in KLIM gear. KLIM pulled that deal this year I guess because I write for a print magazine and don’t spend a bunch of time pimping their stuff on social media. Which I will not do just to get discounts. This basically made purchasing their gear twice as expensive and I don’t think any jacket is worth 1.1K. So, I am going to give the MSR gear a try. Thanks!
Nice review Ian. It would have been good to see the gear off of you showing the inside lining, pockets, etc. It would be cool if the water bladder pocket zipped off, not sure if it does or not. But having that option is nice. I had the integrated water bladder feature on another jacket once and it's nice. I ended up with a KLIM Carlsbad last year after buying and disliking an Aerostitch Darian jacket, now that's a boxy stiff feeling jacket that still didn't fit as well as the Carlsbad! If the MSR had been available then I'd have seriously considered it. IMO a big chunk of the price is "usually" attributed to the Gore-Tex lining on just about any product that has it, they must charge a fortune to the manufacturers. I do wish it was easier to find gear in stores to try on because it really does make a huge difference. Keep up the gear reviews, they are very welcome.
I thought I’d love the integrated water bladder in my Rev’It! Cayenne. The jacket fits perfectly, and with the bladder in it, it feels all lumpy and awkward and doesn’t fit right. I bought me new tires through your link. Hope you got the credit.
Great review, I just became aware of MSR motorcycle clothing and immediately went to your site to see your review. I trust your reviews and opinion. I would really be interested in a review of the motorcycle "Airbag" clothing thing. I've been riding with a "HitAir" inflatable vest for years. It's gone off once, dismounting from my bike I was on the left footpeg - right leg high in the air to clear my topbag on dismount and boom - I'd forgotten to leave it in gear and the side stand folded. I went down hard on my left side onto concrete pavers. I felt NOTHING, my neck was Not wrenched (I'm 74 and no longer very flexible and MUCH easier to hurt) and my side was not sore. That vest fired and the protection was amazing - cost to reload it $25 Canadian for a new CO2 cartridge. There are a myriad of options on the market. When you're talking about CE level 2 versus 1, the airbag vest which goes over any of my gear and really minimally impedes airflow gives VERY impressive protection. It's a subject that is worth exploring as I value your opinion. Alex
An excellent and detailed review, as always. Thank you! I am currently shopping for a full new kit, so will definitely look into this gear more (and, yes, use your link if I buy it! 😉). Keep up the good work, Ian!
Thanks! Wow, 80 to 85 degrees before you switch over? For me, I make sure I wear mesh if the bulk of the day is over 74. It is quite remarkable how you can layer a mesh suit to suit even much colder and wet riding conditions when you have to and there is simply no way you can peel of a layer to an all season suit when the temperature rises. They could maybe also consider a long vent zipper under the armpit running down your side in future...
Great Review now im second guessing what to get for next season this spring!!! if you wear it more im curious what you thing after it is broken in.... MSR may be worth the savings over the bad lands.. and Pant comparisons!!???
Thanks Ian! I also watched Ben's/Dork's review of this riding suit, and it's definitely a contender. How do you feel about the lack of a zip-in feature to attach the pants to the jacket? I think Klim/Rev'it has that. Anyway, I appreciate your thoughts, as always.
This is pretty much a dealbreaker for me. I know it sounds silly, but I can't stand not having a zipper to connect my pants and jacket. It's one of the main reasons I buy my gear in sets instead of seperate product lines and/or manufacturers.
Ian, thanks for the yay/nay review. Did I understand you to say that the pants only have a short-ish zipper/Velcro arrangement? If so, I’ll stick with my Aerostich Darien pants: bulletproof, waterproof, full length 2-way zippers on the legs. I get about 10 years out of a pair.
Get the MSR and put a Klim patch on it, no one would know the difference. I started wearing Klim when they were about the only source. I still wear them but only because I get a big discount.
Great review. The pants do look bulky in the seat area. Like you’re wearing baggy pants but I bet they’re fine on the bike. I have an Aerostitch I’ve had since ‘96…. Plus all sorts of other gear, Klim, Firstgear, Rev It, Shoei, good gear is worth every nickel it costs you in comfort and safety.
Would like to have those outside pockets on my 15 year old Tourateck suit, but apart from that, I see no major reason to change. Thanks for the presentation.
I am reporting a change to this jacket. I got my jacket an hour ago, so its as new as it can get. at the 7 minute mark, the arm fit adjuster is now lowered and sits right at the zipper. Very easy to move the elbow now.
Thank you for this review! I just bought the Klim Carlsbad and found it too boxy and frankly too $$$. I ordered an MSR suit based on your review and hope it will work out better for me!
Update… I received the jacket and man the arm zippers are stiff….do they soften up over time? FWIW, I asked Ben at Dork in the Road the same question and waiting for his reply.
Great review Ian, I am a fan. I would like to know what abrasion resistance rating this suit has . I know there is super fabric used but knowing the abrasion rating would help to make an informed choice knowing the jacket is safe. greetings !
I've had a Rev it Dominator suit and my now Klim Carlsbad suit. The Dominator was overkill. I like my Carlsbad much better, it's much lighter. Some super fabric would be nice to have on the Carlsbad. This MSR jacket looks the part, I just wonder about the stitching, longevity in use and wear. Not sure about the tailoring, looks a bit sloppy, and the rabbit pouch pocket in the back isn't something I've ever used on any jackets I've had and is bulky. The Event fabric does work at least as good as Gore-Tex Pro when I had my Mosko Basilisk jacket.
Not as boxy as the Klim is a good start, but it still looks pretty big. In my limited experience, Revit gear fits slimmer builds OK, but doesn't come in tall sizes across the board. (And their sizing is odd and inconsistent sometimes too. I have some pant from them that my legs barely fit into, and I have *skinny* legs.) These guys could lock up an entire market segment if they offered a slim or just tall size. There's almost nothing else out there. Edit: revisiting the site, it looks like there *is* a tall size in the pants -- didn't show when I checked the first couple times. Tall jacket would also be nice although the sleeves look fairly long on you, so maybe they'd fit those of us with spidermonkey arms.
The wort on your back 😂 I laughed my coffee out my nose. Thanks for that. I am considering this. I have klim gear, but if I happen to change…..you did a great review. Thanks!
Just bought a pair. Considering returning them without riding in them because of the gusseted fly. To take a pee one would have to undo the buckle, unzip the fly, then pull the pant down four to five inches to relieve yourself. Frankly, the function of the gusset escapes me. In rain it would collect water because the gusset forms a pocket inside the zipper. What was your experience with this feature?
Great review. I have been debating the cost benefit of new adventure suit considering how expensive a full klim suit aprox. 2K. So perfect timing with this option. Will use ur link to buy.
As a long time long distance rider, I would say , check out Aerostitch Stitch for all the excellent handmade ,by American hands , riding gear. My Roadcrafter one-piece riding suit is over 20 year's old and other than some fading works like new . Their service is Old Fashioned American EXCELLENT as well , given with pride . Remember ? ? Lol .
I too have a well aged Aerostich Roadcrafter 1pc suit that has been a very robust rugged piece of gear. The instant I put it on I feel secure. My favorite feature of the Aerostich 1pc is the ease of getting on and off. I like to give my legs a good “stretch” when I am touring by getting off the bike and exploring on foot by either walking or hiking. I wear appropriate “street” clothes for the climate under the suit so that when I reach my destination I can quickly shed the suit put on the appropriate footwear and get to exploring off the bike. Two piece suits such as this MSR and others are of great quality and utility for their intended purpose but I find it just takes extra time to take the suit off and put it back on when getting on/off the bike. Love my Aerostich. They are twice the cost of the current sales price of the MSR though.
Good review. This question is off base but can you explain your rack and bag choices for the aprilia? Just bought a 660 and like your setup. Much appreciated! 👍
Actually Lattitude is the only Klim jacket that comes with waist adjustment. In fact that’s the reason I prefer it over Carlsbad or even Badlands jackets.
I like the blue and orange also, but they don’t offer a short in the pants. It says they have regular and tall for the pants but if you try and order the pants it just has the waist size in the drop down so no way to order except over the phone I guess.
For hot weather and wearing mesh gear do you use external protection like forearm/elbow/knee protection or is there mesh gear with built in protection?
Well for everyone's knowledge. Shipping to EU in fact doubles the price. Shipping $570.57 plus Duty & taxes $563.72. I ended up with over a 2k USD bill. Well. It looks like I need to stick to what is available in the EU. What a shame.
I fully understand why it comes with lower level armor, but if they made the higher level available as an option, don't you think a lot of riders would be willing to pay extra? I rather have that choice, as opposed to paying for level one and then paying again for level 2.
Looks like a nice Klim alternative and Rocky mt really stands by their gear.. But I dont care for the Quasimoto look of the Hydration pocket on the back Useful for those who would use it, but for me I would have a empty pocket 90% of the time. Im sure the hardcore ADV crowd will love it.
Mostly street guy here and when Im thristy I just stop for a drink.(at starbucks).I wear a Klim carlsbad jacket and its perfect for me.(love the pockets)It would be different if I lived in So Cal. I have also done alot of backpacking and bladders were a pain inside apack. So having one on the outside of jacket makes sense.
I have a jacket from a manufacturer I won't mention (not a major) on which the velcro at the neck and wrists started failing less than a year into ownership. Now a pocket zipper has failed (3 years), so I'm shopping for a new winter jacket. I'll probably hold out until fall because I can switch to my summer jacket in a couple of months, but this will be high on my list. Good quality and low price seem like a winning combo. If I have one winter jacket that I wear almost daily from October to May, how many years should I expect it to last?
It was wise to mention to pay attention to whether a jacket comes with armor. I'm less picky about pants, as it's easy to burn a hole in 'em when you wreck. I will remain a Klim buyer for jackets, but not for gloves. Part of my loyalty to Klim has to do with the fact that I ride and camp in Idaho as much as I can! I guess Utah has Rocky Mountain, and I do love Utah as well.
Hey Ian just for nothing, did you know MSR stands for Malcom Smith Racing. Was started to produce the mudder front dirt fender, then the modified udder mudder fender. (true story) Thanks for the review.
This jacket does not attach to the pants/There is no option for that via zipper or loop.....not great on a fairly premium suit....i'll wait for a potential redesign on this one but thanks for the review
Ian, thanks for the review, very informative. Any idea if this gear will become available in Australia? Very interested in the winter gloves, but I would like to try them on before committing to purchasing. Keep up the good work 👍
Tork for front and rear axles on aprilia Tuareg 660 want to change tires, also is a workshop manual available besides the download one, it is not very useful. Thanks
These are made to go over your regular cloths? Jeans, etc. Should you go up a size to accomplish that or just buy your normal sizes? I am not an ADV rider but I'm looking for something to wear in the colder months or in the rain. Is this a good option for that kind of riding?
Hi Ben I’m close to ordering a set but need your input as far as sizing is concerned. Did you order the pants in the same size as the jeans you normally wear or do you use a tape measure and order by inches? Thank you!!
The Scorpion Yosemite looks pretty swank - have you tested it?. regarding MSR: I wonder about using the superfabric but then putting vulnerable seams on the shoulders. I agree, level 1 stuff is a cop out. Level two does not have to be bulkier, and if you're going to do it, do it right, or sell without armor for cheaper and let people get their own. As for chest protector: I have a 1 piece that I put some velcro on, and every jacket I get, I shoe goo a little velcro inside to hold the armor. Works fine.
I own the Scorpion Yosemite jacket and it is a great jacket. The main downside to the Yosemite is that if you want it to be waterproof you have to wear the inner liner. I have been riding mine hard for two years and multiple thousands of miles and the Yellow is still as bright as day one and there is no wear at all. It is comfortable , has lots of pockets and ventilation The fit is more euro and I would size up. For $400 retail I would probably go for the MSR but I picked mine up never used for $200 and for that it was a bargain. During the summer I take out the factory level 2 armor and put it over a Forcefield EX-K flight harness with the arm protectors. I did crash once hard in a rock garden in the jacket while I was running the level 2 armor and took a hard hit to my shoulder but it protected me and although I was sore as hell for two weeks nothing was broken (can't say that about the bike). Also the jacket was unmarked from the impact. It was after that incident that the Forcefield EX-K Flight Vest was purchased to give me even greater protection. I even ride my quad in the winter in the Yosemite with all the layers in it with the factory level 2 armor and a heated jacket underneath. I am going to wait for the second generation of the MSR and hopefully they offer high vis yellow as it is a lifesaver on the road. I would remove the level one armor and run it over my Forcefield EK-X Flight Harness for maximum protection.
I bought this jacket and when I try it on, I find the forearm vent/zipper is annoying near the bend of my elbow. Did you experience this? When I bend my arms, the inside of the zipper pushes into my forearm a bit. Not a deal breaker, but I definitely notice it. Do you find this goes away as the jacket wears?
Same here. Two things I've found that help with this issue. If it's warm enough, I unzip the forearm vent zipper a bit down toward the wrist. Doesn't take much, just an inch or two, to loosen it up there. Also, you can "reverse" the sleeve strap (pull it over to the outside of the sleeve) and the issue is pretty much gone -- as long as you don't use that strap. I've never had to "tighten" the sleeves on any of my jackets.
Ian will the pants fit over the boots? you mentioned the adjustability and that you like to tuck yours in. I jst want to know if you tried or not. I have the same boots
Can CE2 armor be added to the MSR aftermarket? If MSR offered chest protector pockets and an option to upgrade to CE2 (keep the CE1 as the base option), they’d own this category.
5 yrs ago, Rocky Mountain had a better, cheaper set. The ARC suit was 450 to 550 and had everything but a back protector. 5yrs old and it's as good as day 1.

The Event fabric does work at least as good as Gore-Tex Pro when I had my Mosko Basilisk jacket.
One thing also the MSR doesn’t offer a zipper connection from the jacket to pant. I would like to see that on a future version.
Agreed
What did you end. up getting? I'm still looking myself...
@@kee7678 Unfortunately there is no tall option for the pants in the blue/orange color way for some reason.
The wort on your back 😂
I laughed my coffee out my nose.
Thank you !
I got some alpinestar ce level 1 hip pads that fit in the chest pockets! Fits super well and can’t even tell it’s there
Double zipper on the front and large rear pocket under the water pocket are a plus.... great price.
I placed an order this jacket n pants thru your link thanks!!
Thanks for the review! On Rocky Mountain's website it shows the price as a 33% discount. Any inside information on how long this discount will run?
Great work 👏
Thank you for you review, which MSR or Klim Gear is best very hot humid temperatures above 100 F, thanks
Good review. This question is off base but can you explain your rack and bag choices for the aprilia? Just bought a 660 and like your setup. Much appreciated! 👍
Coming soon!
Actually Lattitude is the only Klim jacket that comes with waist adjustment. In fact that’s the reason I prefer it over Carlsbad or even Badlands jackets.
Nice review Ian. Always appreciate your straightforward, and honest reviews. Question: What is the overall CE rating on the jacket?
I've sent a message to Rocky Mountain with the same question. I'll post an answer if they ever send one!
@@danielkramer8586 Thanks!
I like the blue and orange also, but they don’t offer a short in the pants. It says they have regular and tall for the pants but if you try and order the pants it just has the waist size in the drop down so no way to order except over the phone I guess.
I hope they come out with a thermos camelback version that holds 3 litres of hot coffee.
great idea!
I tried using your link for the pants but once I get to RM it won't let me add it to the shopping cart after making the color and size selection.
What are the odds? Just yesterday, Dork In The Road released an MSR review video.
Well. It looks like I need to stick to
what is available in the EU. What a shame.
The jacket needs an internal harness (like Klim badlands adv) for the water bladder weight support. With a full bladder, does the neck choke you?
I fully understand why it comes with lower level armor, but if they made the higher level available as an option, don't you think a lot of riders would be willing to pay extra? I rather have that choice, as opposed to paying for level one and then paying again for level 2.
Looks like a nice Klim alternative and Rocky mt really stands by their gear.. But I dont care for the Quasimoto look of the Hydration pocket on the back Useful for those who would use it, but for me I would have a empty pocket 90% of the time. Im sure the hardcore ADV crowd will love it.
You just drink your spit?
Mostly street guy here and when Im thristy I just stop for a drink.(at starbucks).I wear a
Klim carlsbad jacket and its perfect for me.(love the pockets)It would be different if I lived in So Cal. I have also done alot of backpacking and bladders were a pain inside apack. So having one on the outside of jacket makes sense.
@@rvator7291 👍🤙
Do you have a preferred brand of pants?
Hey Ian just for nothing, did you know MSR stands for Malcom Smith Racing. Was started to produce the mudder front dirt fender, then the modified udder mudder fender. (true story) Thanks for the review.
Thanks for the review. Could you tell me what mesh gear you use in hot weather?
Did you also happen to do a review for the MSR Gloves?
I just wish they made this gear for tall people. Its so hard to get good fitting, protective riding gear being 6'8".
This jacket does not attach to the pants/There is no option for that via zipper or loop.....not great on a fairly premium suit....i'll wait for a potential redesign on this one but thanks for the review
It's been 8 months since you did this video. How do the vents work?
What would you suggest as far as mesh pants with protected pads/armor, something I can throw on over a pair of jeans or shorts?
Thank you.
Ian, thanks for the review, very informative. Any idea if this gear will become available in Australia? Very interested in the winter gloves, but I would like to try them on before committing to purchasing. Keep up the good work 👍
Ian, I tried your links for the mis layer MSR jacket and it doesn't work. The msrxplorer jacket worked. How can we help out if link does not work?
Tork for front and rear axles on aprilia Tuareg 660 want to change tires, also is a workshop manual available besides the download one, it is not very useful. Thanks
Is there ITB version pants? How do you put pants in a boot? Looks really good. Thinking about getting a set due to this review.
These are made to go over your regular cloths? Jeans, etc. Should you go up a size to accomplish that or just buy your normal sizes? I am not an ADV rider but I'm looking for something to wear in the colder months or in the rain. Is this a good option for that kind of riding?
I have a set on order and talked to RMATV. Not sized as overpaint-I went up one size. Hope it wasn't mistake. Should have them next Monday.
Hi Ben
I’m close to ordering a set but need your input as far as sizing is concerned.
If you want to know how well the vents work, open all of them and go for a ride at 40F degrees. You’ll immediately feel it good or bad.
But unfortunately after that experience. It makes the gear none refundable.
The jump in 😂😂😂
Awesome review of this gear! What are you running for pannier racks on your Tuareg?
Sw-motech
Ian, I used Chrome and entered link Chrome failed. The utube link works just fine. My mistake??
Do you think this will have enough ventilation during summer or do you think the Klim Baja would be better just cost more?
Thanks for the great videos
I think you'll still need mesh in the summer.
I heard there’s no zipper between the jacket and pants. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
Thank you and great job!
I adore you, Ian.
Ian will the pants fit over the boots? you mentioned the adjustability and that you like to tuck yours in. I jst want to know if you tried or not. I have the same boots
Yes, they are designed to go over the boots and work well that way,
Which RevIt jacket/pants combo or other brands and models you would compare this MSR Explorer?
Broke down and bought the Badland pants and jacket never need to buy again........
Question ian, can you comfortably wear a pair of jeans underneath the pants?
Isn't it time for a helmet review/selection video soon?
Can CE2 armor be added to the MSR aftermarket?
If MSR offered chest protector pockets and an option to upgrade to CE2 (keep the CE1 as the base option), they’d own this category.
Yes you can upgrade just about any gear to CE2
Gears great but, can we upgrade to CE Level 2 armour???
Great vids keep um coming.

5 yrs ago, Rocky Mountain had a better, cheaper set. The ARC suit was 450 to 550 and had everything but a back protector. 5yrs old and it's as good as day 1.
