  • A year of construction, and I'm met with some bad news... failed inspections, bureaucratic delays and parts on back order could spell disaster for the store build!

    Just a small thought Alex? Can you take pics of your tea product shelves, print them and put the pics in the first building and if someone wants to purchase some of that product...you or a family member or even shawn, may be able to run to that side and retrieve it...just a thought.

    What a great idea the "roller magnet " is. I'm a hobbyist watchmaker and have spent many a happy hour on my hands and knees trying to find some tiny piece that has "pinged" out of my tweezers. Even with a magnet it's still a task, but with that gizmo I could cover so much more area. Thanks Alex.

      I took a magnetic bowl from Harbor Freight and duct-taped it upside-down to a broomstick because I needed something to pick up all of the safety pins and hairpins left on the band room floor after the high school musical. It worked really well though it looked funny 😁

      Take a bright flashlight, get down on hands and knees on the floor and shine parallel to the floor across its surface along to light up everything on the floor.
      You may have to experiment with the angle. You want to light up a path across the floor so that all the bits show up, from motes of dust to the item you dropped.
      You will find the tiny thing you dropped much faster and easier.

      My grandpa was a watchmaker as well. He had a beautiful mahogany watchmaker's cabinet with all the shallow drawers and metal knobs. He attached glass maybe 2-3 feet tall going all around the three sides of it so he didn't lose as many parts when they'd ping off the table. We always thought he ruined a beautiful piece of furniture by screwing those panels into the top, but he was a very practical man with all sorts of ingenuity. He installed similar glass or plexiglass panels at the end of their kitchen counter to...and it just dawned on me that maybe sometimes he used that as a workbench as well.

    It’s not just your town. It’s like that everywhere! Permits are the worst, and I haven’t heard of anyone passing inspection the first time. At one time I actually hired an inspector to review the work, fixed everything that could be a problem , and still had to do “ one more thing” before I got approved. Maddening!!!!

    • @tarnin
      @tarnin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      This happened when my wifes new place was built. Not only did they have those inspectors, which all found "small" issues, but they have state board because it's a salon. They found issues too even though they paid other inspectors to find issues. I swear it's a scam at this point.

    • @whammond511

      Within the Trade of “Bldg. Inspectors” you’re not considered a ‘good’ inspector unless you find something wrong. It’s possible that you’re simply a victim of ‘office protocol’. This could especially be the case because their ‘codes’ are written vaguely enough that there’s always wiggle room.

    • @stefanfrankel8157
      @stefanfrankel8157 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      They have to find _something_ so they feel like they are doing their job. The trick is to make one obvious and easy to fix "mistake" so they don't go after something more serious. There are also places where a little baksheesh is expected, though I'm not suggesting this is true in Edmonton.

    • @whammond511
      @whammond511 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@stefanfrankel8157 You can never offer ‘Baksheesh’ because then you’re subject to a Bribery charge. And if they ask for it, unless you’ve got it on video, don’t even consider it. If you do video it, make them come back later to collect it and in the meantime report them to authorities (not their Supervisor). Then let them take over!

    • @Jason_xofilos
      @Jason_xofilos 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Permits exist for a reason plus inspections are important for community standards. That said required parts such as pumps or valves should not be something that you are notified at the the last moment, or you have to know about through building experience or reading the mind of inspectors rather then documents which spell out what is required. Not the only town where this happens but it is unfortunate you are having to deal with.
      On the bright side, look a new building! Plus it is another retail store front. Good luck on all these minor but in your face issues that you dealing with.

    All these things you failed upon inspection are safety issues. But, time wise, making appointments to have these issues fixed is just that, more time. I fault your subcontractors. All those things they should have known were necessary. Even I know about GFIC plugs. I am a nurse. All of our plugs in an ICU are red GFIC plugs. Red because they are on a generator back up. However, if they are within 10 feet of fluid or water, they have to have a GFIC plug. So, our banks of plugs are ALL special plugs. . I have used the defibrillator while standing in water (source unknown. Possibly the water was from a ventilator, IV fluid, flush, or irrigation.)
    Alex, your store is FABULOUS!!! I know it's frustrating but these are safety issues. Your city is keeping you and your customers safe. Take a deep breath. This, too, shall pass.

      In my Community, in order to get your Certificate of Occupancy you have to have all your inspectors signatures on the Final Inspection Card. I was in the business for 4 yrs. before the Clerk at the main desk told me that if I had the individual inspections then they could sign off on the CO. The Chief Insp. just signed for the others.
      So I learned to request my CO at the get-go and then when any Insp. came, I had them sign on the CO card as well. Even at 30 yrs. you will still be learning new things and encountering new circumstances!!

    GREETINGS ALEX! 🙋🏼‍♀️ Very exciting watching everything come together! I was wondering if u couldn't actually go to whoever needs to remove progress from pending to 'full steam ahead" and simply ask them to help u find a solution to this problem and get them to do it right then and there? Not knowing exactly how things work in Canada, I would think it wouldn't hurt to try! And a solution for the metal bar to fix the door handle...how about using a shower door towel holder/bar as the missing piece? 🤷🏼‍♀️ I would think u could very easily cut it to size and weld it right on like it was meant to be there! Cargo ships are sitting in the harbor backed up and it could be months before u get this simple piece. As far as the delays in general, u have a great outlook and seem to be a fairly patient person, although I can imagine it must be extremely frustrating at times. However, If we don't endure bumps in the road, we won't fully appreciate the smooth ride when it's all over! 😉 How rewarding it will be when it's all said and done and u can look back on it as just another hurdle you've overcome and a great part of your legacy u leave behind for your children, as well as your contributions to your town! You're an amazing person and I thoroughly enjoy watching u so excited for everything and seeing u achieve your goals in life! 💪🏼😎✌🏼

    • @jordynoleymom
      @jordynoleymom 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If a roller didn’t work for sewing pins, you can just buy a bar on a string that’s not on wheels that you just pull along the ground. Would be great for indoor use I would think! We used one in our driveway at the lake after taking apart some old boards a friend gave us to use for firewood. Nails everywhere! That was a couple years ago now and ironically I’m sitting out here at the lake with a possible low tire. I may have picked something up or the sensor in my Jeep isn’t working. Tire looks completely normal to me 🤷‍♀️

    I'm a builder's daughter raised on stories of building inspections. Sounds like the inspectors found some real problems that the fixing of will save you much time, loss, and trouble in the future. You aren't doing badly. You just failed to allow time to rectify mistakes. You aren't meeting your time goal because your goal was unrealistic. You'll be open and in business in time for the Christmas season. Be happy You are doing well.

    I think you just like to say “Salsa”! 😂. Could you ask Josh to fabricate what you need for your doors? Sorry for your challenges with this new building…every single person I know who’s done any kind of new build, home or commercial, has had to alter their Goal Posts. So much “red tape” and having to count on people/workers other than yourself to do things timely and correct, and of course, up to code. It’s all going to pan out okay. Just a little bit different time frame, but if anybody can handle it, it’s you. My best friend does concrete patios, driveways, and helped me do my inlaid patio bricks. That walkway will likely shift again, especially after winter & as the building settles. Dirt moves. The “code people” should have been nicer, & suggested you use sand. Being helpful isn’t really their forte’, though! Loving the new building! Have a good weekend!
