It put my mind at ease when Vince described how Betty Joan was out and about traveling around the city, and particularly that she never ate meals in the house when it was in that extreme condition. That paints a happier image of her life than I first imagined when I saw the house. Thank you.

you made a point to comment on how dapper Madame Rac's father was, and I'm sitting here making the same observation about you. Always looking sharp. And Madame Rac was the cutest little lady I've ever seen. Love that she mowed her lawn all decked out and bedazzled. Thanks for the update on her house, and thanks to Vince for allowing it.

I often think of Alex as a modern day Mr. Rodgers. Not only his demeanor but his inclusion of all sorts from the “neighborhood” and he does his best to explain and describe all that’s going on, including the feelings and small details. So I’m glad someone else thinks the same too.

With this visit to Madame Rac's house her story came full circle. It was great to see how nice the house looks again. When you came back up from the basement to look at the pictures and Vince was sitting at the piano, my first thought was, "I hope he plays something." Once he started playing it became obvious that Madame Rac had done a fine job teaching him. Thanks for sharing this wonderful update on the Madame Rac story!

Iss Bette Joan ,reminds me of my husbands mother , A fashionista, pianist extraordinaire, playing for the Silent Movies . She could sew , and created her own dresses , and wore them with that same style . At parties , she held the floor and entertained everyone , sometimes with risque stories . I feel youve showcased , a talented , lovely , vivacious lady and her life has reminded me of Irma Lee Short , my amazing mother in law, Feilding ,NZ. ❤t y ❤

If he hadn't done that, we would have been left just thinking she was a crazy hoarder. She may have saved a lot of things, but that's NOT what she was. She was a magnificent lady who's wonderful history will now be remembered by people all over the world thanks to Alex!

Mr.decided to surprise me and bought ungy orange naugahyde sofa and chair and sold my beautiful set to his family. it was ruined and put out as junk in about 3 months time. Ticked about it all 50 years later. I hope that beautiful sofa and chair will always be treasured. Madame's house seemed so much smaller inside to me.

I’m so happy to see he restored (rather than remodeled) the kitchen and bathroom. I’m doing the same to my grandmother’s house, built in 1950.
Essentially the same cupboards in the kitchen, looks like the exact same hardware. I remember when they were cleaning up I thought about sending a message that if they were going to gut the kitchen to sell me the hardware because I’m switching out some knobs for handles.

      @keithbell6866 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@corricatt Hey there corricatt,
I think in a way that you are right about Retro being back but over the last few years I have seen something a little deeper than just the style being back. Among those I know who are expressing an interest in the Retro 50’s and earlier style, it is more about the craftsmanship, material and care that the people crafting everything from the fixtures to ironing boards put into everything that they touched.
How often do you see beautiful wood that has been carefully laminated to make such a beautiful and robust kitchen ironing board? It was all about quality even though it was in relatively inexpensive post war housing. It has a feel and visual texture that is hard to find in much of todays wares. I would love to gather up the amazing designs from the Art deco period to the late 50’s and have a quality new home build…but that is just a pleasant dream for now 😊

It was a tradition in the Canadian part of my family that a bride have her own resources starting out. A gold piece was sewn into the brides shoe for luck and insurance. A similar coin with the same hole was handed down bride to bride in our family.

I’ve seen lots of the flip-out ironing boards in so many post-war houses. The house we live in, in Bethesda, Md, was built in the 50s and there was never any major remodeling done except the kitchen. We don’t have a flip-out ironing board, but the house, like so many built in that era, was built so solidly. They don’t build them like that anymore.

It’s also great he has added a lot to the auction and I hope he gets a good return, he seems to have really cared for Madame Rac and she picked the perfect person to take care of all of her belongings.
As for the gold sovereign, it’s entirely possible it WAS used for a pendant but they were also holed to allow people to string them together so they didn’t get lost. It’s easy to lose a single coin but when you have a whole string of them they are a lot harder to lose. I have also heard of people sewing high value coins into their clothing and that would definitely make sense for something like a sovereign

Alexander, you are awesome in showing so much respect and genuine love for the people in your life. Whether they're family, friends or initially strangers. That is a very admirable part of who you are. I really enjoyed the visit with Vince and update on Madame Rac. The upcoming auction sounds great; hopefully it will be profitable for everyone involved. Thanks 😊.

KUDOS to you both for keeping all those items and momentos in honoring and paying tribute to a woman who gave so much of herself to others so they could pursue their love of music and brought culture to them. And still stayed a classy humble person. It didn't seem like she felt she was above anyone. She was very deserving of being remembered and honored.

Enjoyed this video. Madam Rac was although eccentric a fascinating lady. I'm eccentric and take pride in being so. Her home is beautiful once again and used for a wonderful purpose. Fascinating story of her life. Thank you Vince and Alex.

The house looks so nice. I love that red couch and chair! It was wonderful to hear the personal stories between Betty and this man who made time for her and helped her, more like a son than a friend. I am so happy this house will be loved and cared for and all the history in here, no one forgotten. His Great Grandfather's paintings, his parents furniture, Betty's things. Humbling. Wonderful. Thank you for sharing with us.

Wow, Ernest Brown was a relative of mine. I remember when I was a child my Grandmother travelled to Edmonton. Can't believe I've been watching your videos since the potter's House. I'm over in North East England.

I didn’t realize that Vince was her heir, until he was explaining what he discovered when the safe deposit boxes were opened.

@@annaroseannadanna1 No, he was a piano student of hers when he was a young boy. As an adult he resumed lessons, and they became close friends.

As you were standing in the living room talking about Madame Rac I was watching the lamp flicker behind the piano. I couldn’t help but imagine she was listening and enjoying the kind things being said.
I’m so surprised that there are still estate pieces available! I would love to own a small piece of her legacy! I will have to visit the auction site and see if I can get lucky enough to purchase something.

My grand parents had a red sofa like that one. It too looked new. They had covered it with those old plastic furniture covers that protected from almost everything.

The couch and chair you called a chesterfield we had one very similar when my husband and I got our first apartment. It was filled with horse hair and I had to have a blanket on it all the time. We had it for over fifteen years. Our kids wore it out.
