🤔 apparently lightsaber battles and combat styles for ANH were inspired by traditional Samurai sword techniques and space battles were inspired by WW2 air combat. It seems as if the Rebel machines were designed akin to American planes: mostly sturdy multi-purpose fighters. Judging from this video, you might argue that Imperial machines in contrast were more like Japanese fighters: small and nimble dogfighters, but much less sturdy.
True, but they reversed the doctrine. It was the US with a much larger industrial capacity and population pool that valued the lives of its pilots and the industrial might allowed them to mass produce fighters like the F6F and F4U that poorer and more inefficient Japanese industry could never have.
A tie fighter have no way for a pilot to get back inside without proper landing structures. But somehow pilots found a way to get back in without a proper landing structure.

Curved panels won't 'eliminate' the side target size issue, it reduces it by about 20% at best. Tie defender is my favorite. If the emperor listened to technocrats and tacticians like Thrawn rather than Tarkin the empire could have been much more efficient. 1. Keep the venator, acclamator, arquitense light cruiser, the clones, and republic starfighters such as the v-wing until upkeep become more expensive than new designs. 2. Combine separatist, republic, and new imperial technology and tactics into new designs. I understand the tie design due to centralized logistics rather than having different manufacturers. There are benefits to having different pipelines incase of parts issues, especially in a republic that wants to encourage competition, however for a command economy like the empire it does make sense.: A. Make the tie interceptor the standard tie to act as a point defense ships for carriers, make the tie defender the main long-range patrol and assault starfighter which can extend the range of an imperial fleet. A pair of defenders could likely take out a whole squad of X-wings. Keep the tie bomber but this is the one time I would include another starfighter manufacturer, keeping and upgrading the Y-wing to be a longer range bomber, or develop another type of tie bomber. B. No death star and instead focus technology on interdictors, and stealth ships like the IPV-2C stealth corvette. Create a new carrier based fleet instead of star destroyers. Focus on shields, point defense, and torpedos and missiles over turbolasers. (But keep some turbolasers since they can be fired indefinitely when missiles run out). Also automate much of the ships tor educe crew requirements. Fleet example: 1. Imperial class Star Carrier - New design based on venator. Tie interceptors, bombers, and defenders. I would also include a handful of heavy starfighters such as the missile boat thrawn used that was based on the starwing 1-2 Sovereign class cruisers - smaller more efficient star destroyers, I'm thinking a cross between a gladiator, victory, and munificent frigate. Focusing on shields, long range turbolaser/ion cannons, some medium turbolasers, and especially a focus on capital grade torpedo's, missiles, and point defense weaponry of all types: Laser cannons, point defense missiles, flak guns, and ion cannons. This ship is a also capable of orbital bombardment. 1-2 Stardestroyer class frigates - Basically an imperial MC30c. The stardestroyer frigate will focus on speed, maneuverability, missiles, and turbolasers to quickly strafe enemy ships and retreat. similar complement to the cruiser but with less point defense. I like the cluster bombs that the MC30c had. 2 Nebulon-b frigates. Originally an imperial design anyway I will use likely one as a medical ship and one for additional anti-starfighter support. I would add torpedos and point defense missiles as well but not flak because the shells take up so much space. The empire nationalized CEC so I would include hammerhead corvettes as resupply transports, and create a new gunship based on the lancer, DP20 and raider corvette. Corvettes are a little too big for this role. Their extra space is great for operating on their own for extended periods of times as system patrol ship where a frigate is too expensive and overkill. Small gunships with only enough space or pilots and gunners can be resupplied by the fleet they support. I would have a handful of two different variants 1 focused on anti-starfighter with Lasers and missiles, and one focused on torpedos for anti capital ship warfare. I would name them the "Firestorm class gunship". If possible I would use a handful of IPV-2c stealth corvette as a torpedo boats but these would be more rare. I would also include interdictors in larger fleets. I would also create patrol ships based on the CEC VCX-100 light freighter and add some additional ion weaponry to disable ships in a policing role. The CR90 would also be good to supplement these and be used as personal transports for high ranking imperials. The quasar carrier would also be great for system patrols and policing. The quasar fractures when moving through hyperspace making it weak for the navy but great as a stationary base for VCX-100 patrol ships and tie-interceptors, or as a starfighter base for independently operating tie-defenders. An independent starfighter corps would work great for the empire to set up in hot-spots where a permanent presence is needed.
