I know we are 7 billion people on this planet and everyone has different taste, likes and interests. But there is absolutely no reason to dislike THIS video. A supergood busy Pro Photographer takes 13 minutes of his life to explain this topic so good, helpful and enthusiastic to all us Idi*ts out there. But 33 People aren't synced to respect i guess. Thanks Karl
There are a lot of videos on the internet that explain HOW to use HSS but this is the only one I've seen that actually explains the "science" behind it. It isn't necessary to know this stuff if you just want to learn the basics and start shooting but it definitely deepens your understanding if you know what is happening inside the camera. Thanks a lot, Karl!
This is the FIRST video I've listened to explaining in easy to understand terms that FPS/curtains do "something different" at high speeds...great demonstration!
I just came across this video just now, a full 3 years after it was uploaded. This is probably the best explanation of flash sync speed I've come across to date. Always a difficult area to understand but this video clarifies everything. Excellent explanation. Cheers.
Yes! Great video... but... in the video you talk about Hight Speed Sinc to solve the problem about possibility of certain DSLR to shoot very fast only with the slice windows method with certain flashes which use multiple bursts. You also says that cameras with leaf shutter haven't this problem (if you have a flash with high sync speed). I have a Nikon D800 so over 1/250 it uses the slice windows method. So my question is: How to identify which flahses (speedflash or portable lights, like broncolor) have this capability to produce multiple burst? I mean, if the camera had a leaf flash I would have only to worry about a flash with a similar maximum high sinc speed. But with a camera with the other kind of shutter, how can I identify the right flash to shoot in external daylight with enought power and a very high sync speed? Thank you!!!
***** Something is not clear: Speed Flash uses multiple bursts to make sure that flash exposure lasts for the entire journey of that slit (created by the two curtains) passing accross the sensor. But a normal studio flash, like Broncolor you show in the video... does it do the same? Because I have a studio flash (FOMEX HD 1000) but it doesn't sync over 1/250. So when I buy a studio flash or studio and portable flash with battery pack, for example, what should I read in product features to be sure it will work to syncronize at high speed? And what kind of trigger are compatible?
The flash can synchronise - it's your camera that can't. If you have a camera that can synchronise then the flash will match it. Most DSLRs can only sync to 1/250th, other cameras like medium format can sync at any speed. Ways round it are with hyper sync and HSS as explained in this video but there are limiting factors.
As always Karl, EXCELLENT training, very comprehensive. As a working professional photographer, I tune into your tutorials regularly to enhance my own abilities geared toward producing higher quality work. So thank you very much for your knowledge and teachings.
As a new photographer looking for intelligent critique and explanations, your video was stellar and FAR better than many I've watched, not that the others weren't good, Rather your sensibilities toward educating are extremely spot on and highly informative. I'm a fan now for certain
Man I truly thank for that video. You were the only one who explained it to where I could understand it. I had plenty of issues with my flash and didn’t understand the black lines in my photos. Now I know thanks to you. you’ve gained a new sub and fan!!
Great explanation of Sync Speeds...one thing I have been using to compensate for my slow sync speed is to just use an ND filter to bring down the ambient and turn up the power on my multi-flash setups. Great video!
I already understood this before finding this video but this still has to be the absolute best video that grasps how to teach parts of photography. Very well done.
Karl Taylor excellent job explaining sync speeds, for many years and I mean many I just know what to do and not what to do when it comes to flash photography. Now I know why, thanks for sharing your expertise.
Amazing training, everything is super clear. I love those speed flashes, use them often. I 'd love to thank you separately for your shutter demonstrations and clear English. Just wonderful! Thank you!
I just ordered my first speedlite and was very confused about sync speeds and HSS. This video made sense and was very easily understandable. Thank you! Subscribed.
The first time I learnt after reading many books and watching many videos that the speed of flash is at least 1/2000th of a second. Thank you Karl. That demystifies many things for me. If the speed of flash would be 1/10th sec there wouldn't be shutter speed limitations.
+Agnostos Gnostos You're welcome but if the speed of the flash was 1/10th of a second and you exposed this with a shutter speed of say 1/500th of a second then you would not be able to acheive the full exposure output from your flash in your photo because you would be only be exposing a thin slit as opposed to the whole image during that period. This is essentially the way HSS in 35mm cameras/flash works and why it isn't as versatile compared to using a leaf shutter system. Also it is advantageous to have short flash bursts for freezing the model, clothes, subject etc, where a 1/10th duration flash burst would result in a lot of motion blur if you also exposed it with a lower shutter speed.
Thank you Karl! Great explanation of the how and why of sync speed limitation. Also had no idea that the shutter operated that way on medium format cameras. Always enjoy your tutorials.
Karl, thank you very much for the clear and simple explanations along with the demonstration. I've been learning to use my flash in manual mode and couldn't figure out why I kept getting that band of light in my pictures.
Holy crap... this was actually happening at a photo shoot almost a couple years ago. Upon troubleshooting on the spot, I came to realize that I needed to lower the shutter speed and finished the shoot successfully. Although it's good to know the science and mechanics behind such a thing, so that's cool. Thanks.
Yesterday, I used the flash for the first time and ran into this issue. your video demystified the problem. Thanks, Karl. As always, your a goldmine of experience to learn from. Out of curiosity, I had another issue, the off-camera flash sometimes does not trigger at all, when I move a bit further (triggering the shutter remotely). My gear, A7R111, F20M , F45M (off camera flash)
Brill ,I didn't know about the leaf camera's but now understand where they get the name from and understand why a normal DSLR doesn't work at very high speed
Karl, Thanks for all your video assistance to make all my pictures look good. Talking about Flash High Sync, this a good way to shot in DSLR above 1/4000 with flash. To shoot high speed 1/4000 or above, is not necessary Flash Slave Trigger Hot Shoe Sync Adapter. The only thing that you need is a flash with High Sync, Camera with flash sync speed option. First mount your flash on top of your camera, set it up to Manual or ETTL mode full power, enable the H sync. turn on the strobes or flashes synchronized to slave 1. Thats it.
Thank you Karl. I'm really impressed and greatful for taking time to properly make me understand not only high speed flash but how the camera actually works as well.. I love this video
Wow!! I'm surprised you follow a thread this old. Thank You for commenting. For some reason I figured a photographer of your stature doesn't follow the comments more than a few days. I'm pleasantly surprised and glad you actually follow up on your videos. Thanks again.
Thank you Karl - this was the clearest explanation of why I can't use high shutter speeds on my Nikon D3300. Now I understand why the black bands were appearing. :)
Hi Karl - that was a great video. I'm a techno nerd by day and I understand most of the tech side of photography - at least at a basic level. This is the one subject that really fails to stick in my head and your has been the best, easiest to understand explanation I've seen yet. Let's hope it sticks. I've watched a number of your videos and I really enjoy your approach and enjoy watching your material and presentation - you've got a good, confident bed side manner and a knack for presenting your material in a very understandable way.
I was always interested in how the shutter mechanism goes up to 1/8000 mechanically and I am also starting to learn to use flash so this video has been a Greta help to me thankyou
Thank you thank you thank you! Finally I understand how it works. When I first learned about max sync speed quiet recently (did not understand it just learned I can't go to fast with flash) I was very relieved because I have thought for like 20 years that I broke my father's speedlight when I was young. I was using his old slr canon and being a fully mechanical camera it could of course not stop me from going to high on the shutter speed. I never knew back then why I got the black bars. I stopped using flash because of it.
Wow this was 9 years ago???? the quality of this content is even above than common tutorials out there this 2023!!!! Good thing i bumped into it.
darn, i just realized 9 years ago means 2015, not 2005. It ruined my day.

its great the explanation of the curtains explains WHY the black in photos above 1\250
This is by far the easiest to understand explanation video about Flash sync speed that I have ever seen. Thanks Karl.
Cheers
newpixeldude totally agreed
Ditto!
This is the FIRST video I've listened to explaining in easy to understand terms that FPS/curtains do "something different" at high speeds...great demonstration!
You're the first photographer who ever got me to consider buying his photo course. Incredible experience, knowledge and explanation.
Thanks Chloe very kind.
I just came across this video just now, a full 3 years after it was uploaded. This is probably the best explanation of flash sync speed I've come across to date. Always a difficult area to understand but this video clarifies everything. Excellent explanation. Cheers.
The best example and explanation on the subject I've come across. Thanks to Karl and magic of TH-cam, now I understand the why's.
Finally sync speed explained to maximum, this is the best sync tutorials ever. Thanks Karl.
Best explanation that I have seen yet. Very helpful for understanding HSS!❤
*Do you understand flash sync speeds?* #photographytips #learnbetterlearnfaster
Steven Ralte I felt like whacking the flash on the table when I said flower! :)

yap, as much u mentioned. If there is something else then please bring that to.

The very best HSS explanation video I've found on TH-cam
Thank you
by far the MOST useful flash explanation I've come across. Thank you so much!!
thanks @Karl Taylor. Just watched 5 different videos which all failed to explain that... watched yours... now I get it. Cheers
I already understood this before finding this video but this still has to be the absolute best video that grasps how to teach parts of photography. Very well done.
I have seen many videos on this topic earlier. But this one is where i was able to understand how hss technique works. Thanks Karl !!
Glad it was helpful
Karl Taylor excellent job explaining sync speeds, for many years and I mean many I just know what to do and not what to do when it comes to flash photography. Now I know why, thanks for sharing your expertise.

Thank you so much for this very clear explanation. Now I know why everybody says that leaf shutter on x100f is so fantastic
Great explanation. All of the props really helped to show the concepts you were talking about.
Thank you! While a bit long, this was the most educational and well explaining video on the topic!
Glad it was helpful!
Karl, thanks for that comprehensive explanation. Best I have seen.
Excellent way to explain Sync Speeds, especially if your a beginner 🔰
What a lovely video about what is quite a technical subject. Well done....
Thanks Karl, this is exactly what I needed to overcome my dark exposures. Thanks..
Best explanation I've seen! Brilliantly explained! Could you also do a video about front vs rear curtain sync and what the practical differences are?
I'm drooling over those huge parabolic umbrellas in the background!
Flower.. Flower? Laughed a bit. Very well explained anyways. Learned something new today and actually understood it.
I now understand this! Thanks Karl! As clear as always.
Good clear presentation of HSS. I had learned it before, but I wanted to see how you present before subscribing to your other video tutorials.
Great explanation. Than You very much Karl. This video helped me a lot with choosing flash.
this video was very helpful. i just ordered a flash and this knowledge will prevent my confusion if Ii see that blacked out portion
