Reminds me of a time long ago, when I was stationed aboard a guided missile destroyer and we were on a cruise in the Indian Ocean. and when not in CIC on watch, I’d be in my rack listening to the two tapes I had of America among others, fighting back tears because I missed my girlfriend so badly. One year later I was back in port, and married to that girl. Now, almost 46 years later, she and I are still married, and I still love listening to the greatness of America.
this tune must, lyrically, be the dumbest song of all time. although ,the harmonies and chord progressions are amazing; the idea that anyone would travel across a desert for weeks in solitude and not name their horse is ridiculous. the horse had a given name when he got it, i'm sure. people name their dogs and cats, even chickens. who doesn't name a horse? it's a stupid tune. i'm here for it, though.
@@alteknack2510 The title was just to make people notice it, when flicking through music lists, plus it rhymed. As for your comment about 'dumbest song', well that describes much modern crap these days which could easily take that title.
I graduated in 1974. I was just 17. Went to upstate NY from Ohio and spent the summer at my sister and her hubbies house. Went back to Ohio, I missed my friends.
This song was the first song I ever heard from America, as a boy, back in the 70's. I remember it like it was yesterday! We were in my mothers 1975 Chevy Impala Wagon, and this song came on the radio, and even at that young age, this song really grabbed me! I've loved them ever since!!
I recently discovered the beautiful and profound work of America, I will come back a lot, I will forever carry these beautiful songs in my memories and good moments in life.
I was born on the cusp of rock and roll. By university in 1970, rock was at its zenith. I am blessed to have lived through it and have access to the videos of these incredible musicians. I’ve discovered some that I wish I hadn’t dismissed so lightly. Listen to the music of Greg Lake, first with King Crimson and then Emerson, Lake and Palmer. The first two years of King Crimson produced some of the best rock imo. I don’t care for some of the schizophrenic songs of ELP but the ballads sung by Greg Lake are superb. Happy listening! 😊
I was 9 years old when this song came out, but god I loved it. It amplified my imagination and took me to a calm, peaceful, mystical place. Life was much simpler. I really miss that place... . My life now just seems to be filled with work and endless responsibilities. I hope that I could just feel that feeling again. Just for a while... Thanks to all the artists that follow their Muse and produce art that reaches the soul.
When I got this album in 1973 I knew they were a special band. So many memories with this music... Saw them last year in LA, with my wife and kids. A whole family of fans.❤
I heard this song in Vietnam when I was 13 (1972). The Vietnam War was raging at the time. And now I am 65. I still listen to this song in the car on my way to work.❤
I lost a good friend and teammate recently. After football practice we’d hit the showers and break into this song . Innocent and fun times back in ‘73 .
This wonderful tune really stood out at the time with it's amazing melody , harmonies and lyrics , even the state of the art sound quality sounds better than many digital recordings today. It was a US number 1 in 1972 , hard to believe that America recorded this landmark track in the UK where it was first released reaching number 3 in the charts !.
Apparently this song was not played on certain radio stations in the US due to the word 'horse' which is informal language used in narcotics and many thought this single was Neil Young which is no coincidence as the band were fans and admit to being inspired to produce a similar sound.
I was in the Army stationed in El Paso when this came out in Dec 1971. I’d go to the desert or Mount Franklin overlooking El Paso listening to A Horse With No Name. It was magic. We had lots of parties out in the deserts around El Paso carrying cheap wine (Ripple & Boones Farm) and lots of pot. We were America’s finest protecting our country the best we could.
America, one of my favorite bands I like all the old stuff in the 70s and 80s some of the best music came out of the 70s some of the best man I remember it all I love America
Listening to this song brings be back as a grade 5 student in the 70’s when it was the #1 song in the radio in Baguio City Philippines. Life then was simple but genuinely happier despite having no cellphones, laptops…etc. I even recall America playing at Camp John Hay.
Esta canción de America me fascina desde siempre en mi adolecencia,años maravillosos de buena música y estupendas letras. Ahora con el internet puede ver lo que en esos años solamente oíamos en la radio. Gracias chicos desde Venezuela.
A classic and unforgettable song that will stand the test of musical time! America is for sure one of the greatest rock bands of all time! Thanks for all the great tunes and memories Gerry, Dewey & Dan! 👍👍📀📀
A spiritual awakening ❤....what's the craziest of all is after there has been an awakening, the underlying meaning of all these songs is finally understood. It's like an unlocking of all the beauty in the world. Finally one has the eyes to see and the ears to hear. What a wonderful fucking world!
I was in Guatemala for eighteen months building homes for lenar during that time I listened to this album front to back while I was away it’s amazing how time flies.
One of the earliest songs, I heard at 4 yrs old. 1980. My dad had this on reel to reel. Because its first track one reel would spin slow while the other fast. The designs were cool as they turned. Simple pleasures,... now at age 48 I look back on the memory and it still brings me great joy. Hearing also pink floyds the wall, chicago, foreigner, and many more!
Driving around town today, and what pops on the classic rock station: "Ventura Highway" Immediate full volume. Whatta jam, whatta band. I'm perhaps a whipper-snapper (1972) but America's music was fantastic to my 10-year-old ears, and frankly, even better today!
love their music more every time I listen to it , music has always been an important parto of me,it moves me deeply ,it brings a mix of hapinness and nostalgia, I would like to take it with me to eternity ,in it are the beings that I loved and that are no longer here ,the good memories ,the happy times ,the love I gave and received, all those things that made me the one I Am
Descobri essa banda faz uns 2 meses. Mas essa banda tem 4 integrantes, não é mesmo? So estou vendo 3. 😮 De qualquer forma estou gostando dessa banda. Queria ter vivido essa época mas sem ser velho hoje em dia😊. Um abraço de César do Brasil. 😊
Always so nostalgic. Heavenly harmony.

In 1972 I took a motorcycle trip from NYC to San Francisco and this was my theme song the whole time. It was magic. Thank you America.

Young, a run down station wagon, hair, a surf board, a fire surrounded by friends, and this music. My God how I miss that life.

@alteknack2510 for me it's not about the lyrics. It's about the time and being young with no worries. It makes me feel great as I reminisce.
It's about the story "Don Quixote"

I was crossing the Mojave desert (in a car) in 1976 and this song happened to come on the radio. I became a fan on the spot.
So simple, so pure, so unlike what kids listen to today.
I still play this song 1973 I graduated from high school. When life was simple
Graduation about you time!

Masterpiece for me. Ever! Thank you.
Sadly nowadays kids will never hear music as beautiful as this.
Haunting song that echoes a distant time yet also sounds fresh
Oh for my youth again...brings back memories
A voice clear as a bell, singing with feeling and accuracy. A lasting classic song of great quality..
Loved this song from the moment I heard it 51 years ago. Timeless. Those were happier times. 🇬🇧

You are in for a treat! America is one of the best ever!
Their old stuff is the best, but a newer tune you should check out is "You Can Do Magic!!" If you haven't already! One of their last big hits.

You have discovered a gold mine. One that many of us have enjoyed its never ending riches for over fifty years.
Enjoy the ride..
The degree to which the live performances needed no technology to make them sound good amazes me. Such pure voices, such a perfect song.
It's what we used to call "musicianship" back in the day.
Laying in bed at night with just the glow of the radio dial and this song came on ,to me it was a bedtime story 😊 i want my 70' s back
You have them any time you want them. Just travel in your mind. Best time machine ever invented.
