My mom is a plant person. She had a business when I was little, taking care of skyscrapers' plants. I've always resisted her attempts to get me into plants (killed many, even cacti). My sister gave me a monstera cutting a few months ago. Upon researching how best to care for it, I fell down the "rabbit hole" into the Wonderland of plants. I AM HOOKED. I just got my first antherium (clarinervium) a few days ago ❤. I have nearly 40 plants now. I love your videos!!! They give me inspiration to explore different species and growing techniques. I plan to dabble in pon semi-hydro soon!
Sounds like you just have an issue with your mother and didn’t want to like what she likes. Your sister gives you a plant and suddenly it’s ok. Very telling. Either way welcome to the hobby.
Oh this is so lovely! It’s always different discovering something on your own and falling in love with it for yourself. My mum always wanted to teach me the piano and I’d always resist 😂💚
At the beginning I didnt get the hype of anthuriums and thought that they look to similar. 3 years later I'm obsessed and have a growing collection of very differently looking anthuriums 😂😂😂 I was definitely influenced by you 😂😂😂
I believe when hybridizing anthurium, the pairings most likely to be successful are between anthurium belonging to the same section. For example, the pallidiflorum belongs to section Porphyrochitonium, so it would be most likely to successfully hybridize with other anthurium in that section. Clarinervium is in section Cardiolonchium making it more likely to successfully hybridize with others of that section. There can be successful cross-section hybrids, but I think the chances are just lower. Def worth a try!
I own several Warocqueanums, I use a mix of sphagnum and perlite (for all the fuzzy ones, as you do), but I use vented pots, full with holes at the bottom and on the sides, so it drains super quick, the roots like the airiness. I also water them everyday or every other 2 days, but mines are sitting in the yard below a tree, I can manage to keep 7 leafs at a time.
Claire, please do a video on how to use the rocks and soil for your plants and also show us how you water the plants that way. I would put too much water in the pot, so I need a demonstration. Thank you.
Mix some Sphagnum moss in with your tree fern soil. This is how I managed to grow my queen in no drainage in ambient. She is very thirsty and likes to stay pretty wet. I never let her reservoir dry out She also likes more light than most other Anthuriums I have been pleasantly surprised how fast my anthuriums have been growing in no drainage. The leaves are barely hardening off before the next is on the way. I don’t have the dreaded crispy edges anymore growing this way. About twice a year I flush the vessel if I’m not up potting yet. They usually need an up pot before fertilizer buildup is an issue. I have 76 anthurium. This is also easy if you need a plant sitter. If the Leca is dry water it. I had my son take care of my plants while we were in Italy for 3 weeks and not a single loss in any genus. I hate to think of what I would’ve come home to if he had to determine if the plant needed water by the finger test. I primarily used Lechuza self watering pot before but I had 1 too many stuck water indicators. I prefer to see if it needs watered.
Love love your videos. I have tried a couple of media mixes for my Anthuriums and have finally landed on a tree fern mix - they are LOVING it and growing like mad. I make a chunky mix buy mixing tree fern, chunky perlite (#3) worm castings, repti -bark and pon.
I feel like I would only need about 3-5 Antherium and I’d be good because they look the same to me. Then once I’d get them I’d realize that there are subtle differences, and then they’re actually very different the more I looked into it, and end up getting tons. lol😂
I've had a Metallicum since April and it's second leaf in my care just hardened off. Unfortunately, the first leaf ran into the side of the vase and aborted... The second needed some help emerging, but water and a hand job did it. 😂 It's a nearly perfect leaf! He's in regular Pon with a LECA reservoir. Not even a moss collar. His humidity is between 50-60% and his temps do drop at night, especially now that it's winter. I feed with Silica, Cal-Mag, and Super Thrive Foliage Pro with every watering cuz I'm too lazy to keep track of who has had what! Looks like I have another lead on the way - had an inflo too! Wish I'd taken the pollen after seeing you moon over your home hybrid! Something I've noticed is that your struggle plants tend (not always) to be my easy ones and vice versa. Just shows what a difference growing conditions and personal care make! Like my bird of paradise wants to curl all the time! Light, water, humidity, bigger pot ... Still unhappy. But my veitchii and regale are happy as clams. Fortunately, our strappy anthurium seem to like both our homes! Gods, do I love those! And texture for me is a big one... Weirdness too. I love caudex plants and weird plants from all over and fortunately, I have zones for all of them. But no cabinet. And I hope I don't ever need one. Humidity boxes are great for young Anthurium, Alocasia, tropicals in general. STOP TALKING MER! Best of luck with your plants! I love no drainage... I use it with Pon and with chunky aroid or tree fern fiber-based mixes with a LECA or lava rock reservoir. 💚
Thank you so much for the tips! Isn't it interesting how much environmental factors can make such a huge difference on how easy we find the plants? Regale and veitchii are my enemies right now!
My Anthurium Metallicum grows awesome since I put it in on the cold cellar window. This plant dont like warm climates. If you have a cold and light place you can grow her there. From 3 degrees to maybe 20 this girl grow realy good. If the spring arrives, put her on your balcony if its a little bit shaded and not too sunny. :) I love mine now soooo much, since I understood what she needs.
The trick to Metallicum is colder nights I think, mine has been real easy(knock on Wood etc). It does not like to dry up to much, thirsthy and hungry. Mine is in ambient 50% and now in winter nights drop to 19c with 22-24C in daytime.🙂
I'm an Anthurium andraeanum girlie at heart--as many colored inflo's as I can get! My secret Anthuriums consist of a cobra, a vittarifolium, and a clarinervium (the latter inspired by your love for them) 💚💚💚
My Anthurium Metallicum was hard for me at first but since then, I have put it in a mix of perlite and sphagnum moss in a 90% humidity enclosure and it is doing AMAZING! I have to feed it A LOT, but I absolutely love this plant. It is quite difficult but very rewarding when its established.
I dont have anthuriums , not my thing. Just wanted to say congratulations on getting to the same subscriptions as WildFern, just happened to notice. No mean feat. 😃
The big thing that made a difference to my Anthurium was switching from liquid gold leaf to nurture system power grow fertiliser. It has calmag added that anthurium absolutely love. Often when leaves look mottled or a lighter green/yellow it can be a calmag deficiency. Love your collection, I now feel the need to add a morona to my strap leaf collection 😊
I've done no drainage in a similar way for some of my plants and have found it to be a good route. Some of my plants are better off with drainage, but I like it too because I can see my roots, and it helps not have to make sure I have drainage trays under all my plants
Love the Anthurium collection 💚 i have a few (Pallidiflorum and vittarifolium), and just got one as a freebie in a haul, so mine is growing ever so slightly. Id love to see a video where you rank your hoyas 💚💚
I had a warocqueanum that just.... Was hell bent on dying. I tried everything with that plant and it yeeted itself from life. I bought a second one and that one is going WAY better. It lives in my cabinet at about 75% humidity and bright light and I keep it's feet fairly wet (it's not in semi-hydro, it's in a very chunky mix of coco chips, bark, chunky perlite and worm castings). It's in a pot that has a bunch of holes on the sides for airflow but that pot is in a cache pot and I let it kinda drip a bit of extra water in the cache pot when I water it and it seems to super enjoy that. Idk if it'll help you but... 🤷 Magnificum tho is an anthurium I can't get to live to save my life and it's so sad bc they're so pretty 😭

Oh no!! You've added a few more to my wish list. 🫣 With the Veitchii, I have mine in aroid mix with shredded sphagnum moss, with drainage, and it's been growing really well. Over a year now and I haven't lost a leaf....unlike my Warocqueanum which has half a leaf and three new growth points.😢 I top all mine with moss. It cuts down on watering too. Have a great Christmas Claire, Ross & Yoli. 😘😘😘
I love your collection 😍 I also went anthurium mad this year 😅 by the way I highly recommend grow tropicals anthurium mix 👌🏻 I switched quite a few of mine from semi hydro and they are doing well. So far 🥹💚
I know how you feel with the clari. I have a papi that is my favourite of my anthuriums because it's the only one I've successfully grown from a seed. I didn't create the seeds myself, I bought 4 online but only one germinated. One year later it's a good sized little plant and I love it so much 🥰
hello. Lechuza Pon seems to do wonders for my Anthuriums, especially Clarinervium. Bessae, and many others. some are in Lechuza Pon, some are in a chunky soiless mix with tree fern. beautiful plants, beautiful videos! thank you! 🌱🌸
have you ever tried to grow your plant without a pot by hanging them in sphagnum moss? It’s my favorite new planty thing. This style is called Kokedama and it’s a japanese tradition of hanging plants.
I'm growing an anthurium Clarinervum from seed that I pollinated as well. Managed to get 4. I've no idea if it's 100% pure as I'd never done it before and recall rubbing spadixes from other anthuriums so no idea who the daddy is! So rather exciting to see what it might look like when it's bigger.. But you're right about how long they take from seed maturation point.
For me the game changer for anthuriums is using call mag every other watering. First i had them in coarse pon, but now they are in anthurium mix with tree fern.
I grow my A. Veitchii in homemade aroid mix…it’s growing like a weed, sizing up like crazy. It gets watered twice a week/with fertilizer. Humidity about 70%
Ive purchased 2 veitchii. I have a hard time with these too. I have a stump which is growing a new leaf and a 1 leafer. fingers crossed i can get something out of these.
I only have one antherium (I believe it’s a silver blush) I have had it since July and it’s only grown one new leaf. It looks very healthy it just very slow to grow
Anthuriums prefer some calmag with their fertilising routine. They require higher levels of calcium and magnesium than other plants, and that could be a major contributor to your struggles with anthuriums.
My anthuriums died with no drainage. Someone told me that since they grow on trees without soil or anything, the roots need a lot of oxygen. Now i use pots with aeration holes and they grow like weeds!
I only have three anthuriums currently but I LOVE them! I have a bakerii, clarinervium and luxurians x radicans. I have wondered the same thing…could you pollinate a strappy anthurium with a pendant anthurium like a clarinervium or even a luxurians!? Can you imagine the babies if that IS possible!? I NEED to know now!
Thank you for a great video. I really enjoyed it. I've seen a few terracota looking planters, they are gorgeous, and and really nice wicker planters... where are they from? Thx
I bought a tiny Anthurium Pallidiflorum after seeing yours. It’s currently in moss. How tips on how long I should keep it like that, and what I should move it to? 🤷🏻♂️ 🙏 ❤️🌱
How are they doing in no drainage? I did this to my magnificum regale hybrid. I feel watching your knowledge that it will do fine. They need the constant moisture in the roots I feel. Thinking of where they grow the ground, tree, whatever they grow on, or in it stays wet in the mountains.
I feel like I’d only need 3-5 antherium. They all look the same to me (hot take) But I *know* just like other genuses, that I’d find the subtle differences and tell myself it’s more than subtle so I’d end up buying tons 😂
From my research pallidiflorum has low fertility when crossed with species other than itself but pallidiflorum x panamese and pallidiflorum x forgetii came up when researching crosses so maybe those would work 🤷♂️ although I speculate those have low fertility as well as they are both from different sections (most of the time anthurium crosses with species from different sections have low fertility)
Off topic but .... I was watching one of your old vids and you mentioned you where super excited about doing a pully system for your plant to go up near the roof . Did you try this or would you still .?
I REALLY want a Anthurium Pallidiflorum. I’ve had my eye on it for a while now but haven’t pulled the trigger on a purchase yet. It’ll have to wait until spring now. I don’t want to ship it during a N.E. USA winter… How easy have you found it to grow? It would be my first Anthurium. Probably my only Anthurium.
I think I have yet to see a youtuber who says 'I have never had a problem with my Waroqueanum!' Lol they are difficult! Mine will not let me take it out of the prop box. Tried acclimating it out of the box but the second I try it desperately strives to unalive itself.
28:42 Is not a pure Pap, might be some hybrid crossed with pap, pollen plant might have been a pap, but has more characteristics of the mother plant (white veining and being green). Still too young to know exactly, besides there are thousands of hybrids being produced by equal amount of producers, that keeping track of all of them and their names is an impossible task.
I'm too scared to try no drainage just because then you're only pouring things into it. Fertiliser and the minerals in tap water build up. I do semi hydro in reservoirs and you can periodically give everything a good flush to wash out any salts and other minerals that start to build up.
I've only watched a couple of your videos, but I've never seen you address water quality and water type (specifically pH value and chlorine - tap water, distilled water, boiled water, rainwater, osmosis water) and fertilisation (type, conductivity or µS value, frequency) - are these issues that concern you? Some of the problems you describe (pest infestation, rotting and rapid yellowing) could also be caused by weakened plants that are fed incorrectly. I don't want to give the impression that I know what you should do.
th-cam.com/video/N6o0CyNdn2Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=QX54oBt_2DGx4nyp This guy has a unique method I intend to try. Also, I have an anthurium I can't identify but can't show you here. If you have a way I can get your opinion, I would love that. You're amazing with all of your plants and I love your apartment ❤
I too have a "secret" anthurium collection its wide in the open, but the price of each one remains a mystery to my husband hahahahaha

I REALLY want a Anthurium Pallidiflorum. I’ve had my eye on it for a while now but haven’t pulled the trigger on a purchase yet. It’ll have to wait until spring now. I don’t want to ship it during a N.E. USA winter…
How easy have you found it to grow? It would be my first Anthurium. Probably my only Anthurium.
So the clarinervium is the best anthurium to start with?
Pallidiflorum x Crystallinum exists. It has a very low chance of successful pollunation though. The hybrids are expensive because of this
I really need the link to the square clear pots
In general how hard are they to take care of?? I don't have any but would like to see if its with in my range to mess with
Do you know if liquid gold leaf is obtainable in the US or if there is an equivilant?
Oh my goodness I'm so sad for the second anthurium King veitchii that you had
I think I have yet to see a youtuber who says 'I have never had a problem with my Waroqueanum!' Lol they are difficult! Mine will not let me take it out of the prop box. Tried acclimating it out of the box but the second I try it desperately strives to unalive itself.
I believe the mysterious plant is anthurium forgetii

This guy has a unique method I intend to try. Also, I have an anthurium I can't identify but can't show you here. If you have a way I can get your opinion, I would love that. You're amazing with all of your plants and I love your apartment ❤
What’s the easiest strappy Antherium that you have? (This is my second comment but separating them so this can hopefully be answered lol) 😅💚🪴
