I honestly find that im way more motivated for repotting plants and plant maintenance during the winter than i am the spring - probably because I’m stuck inside with nothing else to do lol
Same! For me it’s just less overwhelming because due to the lack of light they slow down in growth and use up their water way slower so I’m needed less. It’s only my second winter with plants and I really hope I can keep them alive … two randomly died when it started getting cold but everyone else seems fine so far :) pretty slow, but fine! My hoya even started flowering in November oO
I am new to the indoor plant world. I’m actually a professional gardener in Belgium. But house plants are a different league. Thank you Claire. You’re making my start as a plant parent feel extra nice! Keep up the good work. You’re so positive!
Sansi are good to use in regular fixtures or floor lamps/ swag lights with shades so that tour plant gets extra light but you don’t look like to have grow lights all over your house.
I know what you mean! I am pretty confident at my houseplant skills and decided to try my hand at gardening this year. I thought that because I had the ones in my home down to a science then the plants outside would be easy peasy. I was very mistaken! they could not have been more different lol. Here's to trying again next spring!
I appreciate you. You calm me and offer such great guidance. I have 150+ plants and occasionally suffer burnout. You make me realize I'm human and shouldn't be so hard on myself. Thank you!
I bought a lot of plants this summer and was happy with how they were growing until all of a sudden they started rotting… I didn’t catch on quick enough that they had decided it was autumn/winter. 🙄 I’ve repotted many out of their cold soggy pots and am doing disaster management now. I was waiting for a video like this so thanks. Oh and I just broke off the new leaf of my Ficus… 😢 Well, onwards and upwards as they say!
An inexpensive moisture meter was the best thing I could have gotten for myself. I use it every time I make rounds around my house. I don't treat it as gospel, but it is a good indicator of when certain plants could use a drink. It also makes for a fun Arduino project for you tech types out there looking for practice.
I'm (and my plants too) doing so much better after starting to use a water meter. I err on the dry side of it. Right prior, I killed a snake plant via root rot. Although I believe it began in the big box store before my purchase. 😢
For anyone wondering about the peroxide water ratio for root rot, I've found 3% hydrogen peroxide (NO HIGHER! ) mixed with distilled water(just my preference, use whatever water you want) at a 1:8 or 1:9 ratio. Peroxide: water. For example, if I use 1 ounce (30mL) of peroxide, I will use 8-9 ounces (240-270mL) of water. I will typically soak the plant for 30 minutes to an hour depending on how bad the rot is, then rinse really well with plain water. ❤ Only throwing that out there because I know I was curious at one point! I absolutely love this channel so far and although i'm quite experienced and knowledgeable, I find it enjoyable to watch as I complete planty chores as well! ❤ ALSO, If you aren't comfortable with releasing beneficial bugs to get rid of fungus gnats, seriously TRY MOSQUITO BITS!! I've only ever had great luck with making a tea from the bits, then watering my plants with it.
You and your informative, wonderful videos inspired me to get my first two Alocasias about 1 week ago. due to your great advice they are very happy and healthy. thank you. greetings from Austria ❤️
I just washed down the inside and outside of our big balcony windows where 90% of my plants are 😊 it was nice and sunny (but cold) today, and I have some suncatcher window clings on that glass, so I wanted to make sure I get the most rainbows possible 😂🌈🫶🏻
i got into plants in january of this year because i came back from visiting family for the holidays & my monstera (the only plant i had at the time) had root rot. i ended up chopping & propping it into 4 plants, then felt like i needed to diversify so it wasn’t just monstera nation in my living room lol. now i have 30 plants & i’m anxious for how they’re going to do this winter since they’ve been thriving in the warmer months
Absolutely loved this video and you answered nearly all the questions I had, but didn’t ask. So thanks to everyone who sent in questions, and your explanation. Can’t wait till the next video.. love the longer videos I find them so relaxing. And informative of course. ❤🎄🍀
I poke my finger or a stick in the draining holes, if it feels wet then I do not water. Most of my plants live in low light. the ones that need more light I give them 2 hours extra in the morning and 6 hours in the afternoon and evening, turn them off at 8 in the evening. I have radiator with oil and use it for heat to my propagation boxes. We have big wood burners and the plants seem to like it. I think your plants are lovely and your channel is really good.
Hi Claire, may I just say your looking very radiant and glowing 🥰 a useful tip I have found helps a lot for knowing when to water is clear pots. Being able to lift them out and see all the way down the pots is a life saver. (Also great for checking root health)
I would say, that the first first signs that a root rot is starting are that - the plant does not put new leaves for too long and/or the soil stays wet for too long (relative to previous experience with the plant). Great video!
I’ve used nematodes ever since I’ve seen your video on natural pest control and I really like the idea of using something more holistic then a pesticide or chemicals :) also they work great for my plants 😊
Can confirm that Sansi lights will give you yellow leave in cabinets or small spaces, I put one in my terrarium and very quickly realised that it was too strong 😅
my plants have been doing great this year during fall/winter! they aren't near heaters and i have grow-lights. only one thats lost a few leaves has been my peacock plant!
Another long video! I love them so much. You're so often my body double when I try to get things done. Mostly I watch your videos twice, first time i watch them when I do things for my studies and the second time actually watching 😂😂😂
I had a thriving calathea and I was so proud of her. And the first day the temperatures dropped below zero she lost all desire to live. I had to cut off so many leaves, she might not survive this winter🥲
I'm in Australia but for winter I bought a plastic zip up mini greenhouse and added grow lights and a heat mat. Never lost a leaf on my alocasias or anthuriums and they continued to grow. For fungus gnats I use Tanlin drops in my water. It's taken a few months but I'm down to an occasional gnat now. I'd tried everything before but it's the only thing that's worked. Great vid as usual. Thanks. 🪴
I will vouch for the increased humidity to prevent spider mites. This past summer was pretty rainy and my huge outdoor alocasia’s had NO mites, but once it started to get warmer and more dry, they just became magnets for the dang evil monsters.
Got plant chores done along with you. 🙂🙂🙂 It's getting more challenging to get things done, when it's so dark and gloomy lately. Today was an exception, thankfully! 🌞🌞🌞
I usually spread all the things I’ve managed to grow over summer between my neighbours and just wait for spring with a minimal collection… I have small north flat … it’s cold but always humid … not good for plants :-) thank you for sharing the video.
I've had quite a few people come into my work at a nursery/houseplant shop and ask why their plants are not doing well this time of year. Typically it's the watering or temp change! Fluctuating temps with heaters, or watering the same amount as they would during the summer. Also this is not related to anything but that blue is YOUR color!
25:10 I got a plant from friends. It was in soil but as I grow everything in semi hydro, the first thing I have done was taking the plant out of the soil. Thanks goodness I was doing it outside (many times I do that inside). As the soil was falling out of the pot, there came out with it the biggest and thickest earthworm I have ever seen. I almost fainted... it scared me to death 🤣
I’m sure a lot of people have already heard of this but, “Mosquito Bits” have been my go to for fungus gnats for years now. MB is the absolute only thing I’ve found which works consistently for me every time! Just a suggestion if yr one of these folks who find nematodes to be not an option for whatever reason.
A substitute for your orchid bark shortage could be reptile bark. Here in Canada - the are both made of the same type of tree bark. Maybe they are the same there too?
Hehe, sounds like Ew! Worms! 😄I've been spraying the top of the soil with Oxygen Peroxide solution and I've kept gnats in check although I have almost 100 green babies 🪴💚
Loved the video 😍 the only problem I have is with my peperomia hope but I had that from the start 🙈 the new leaves are much smaller than the old ones and they curl up and fall off regularly 😵💫 when I cut it back it doesn’t produce new leaves where I cut… it’s under a grow light, I water regularly but not too much since it’s a semi succulent and the humidity is always between 50-60% so I don’t know what it wants from me 🙄😅
If my plants are in desperate need of re-potting, I will repot anytime of the year, actually I just did 9 of them, and some are already showing new growth, and others are really perking up. I do that to any new plants, year round. Winter doesn't seem to bother my plants, and I live in, Cold Alberta Canada
Im sooo glad i found you! And your informational , no nonsense way of growing! So, do you have any peace lily advice? Because " plant parenting " can sometimes be so confusing! They like water ,but not too much water, no they dont like water, but can be grown in water Mine is alive, but has brown tips I'M SOOO CONFUSED!!
I just wanted to say regarding heat mats- I have never really used them for anything buy propagation. HOWEVER- when I bought my gorgeous and HUGE Pariso Verde from a lady who own a plant store, she told me that the plant LOVED HEAT! More than humidity, it loved heat. Heat is what keeps the Pariso Verde colorful and growing large. I couldn’t keep it warm enough. And it was going down hill QUICKLY. I was scared to death I had just spent a fortune on a plant doomed to die! 😢 So I bought a heat Mat and put it on it. It turned that plant around so fast. It is now healthy, gorgeous and loving life. So, although most don’t need a heat mats, there are a few that might benefit. Especially if you have a Pariso Verde! Just hoping to help someone with this info.
Your plants are so gorgeous and healthy looking, I've just spotted a major thrip infestation and I've been fighting fungas gnats, I've just brought nematodes and mites from ladybird plant care and I plan on trimming and using the horticultural soap until the other bits arrive, but most of my plants have been affected and they just look so unhappy right now. Feeling a bit overwhelmed and like a rubbish plant parent for letting it get so bad. Also suspect my glorious has root rot going on....do you have any tips on keeping moss poles moist without overwatering the plant? Thanks in advance. Love all your content x
I got a grow bulb off ebay from China in July for £5. I got another bulb from ebay, China last month for £11. Cheaper in summer. Please take note of the fitting, they were E27. Need the correct bulb socket xxx
Hi Claire! I’m going away from my plants for 3 weeks for the holidays and will probably use big clear boxes under grow lights to store any plants that can fit it in as that worked splendidly for me for plants in soil in the past. Do you know if putting plants in pon/self-watering planter in these boxes would work to keep the plants hydrated? There’s definitely not enough reservoir to keep my plants hydrated for 3 weeks unfortunately (I usually have to replenish every 5-7 days for my anthurium clarinervium). Thanks for your amazing videos and advices as always! Much love from Boston!
Nothing worst than root rot cannot rescue it. I lost my Euphoria Acrurensis there a few months ago which i was so sad about. After seeing your’s. Even though it was in a clear orchid pot and only water it when i could see the soil dry. Also only once a month i water. Fungus gnats happens from over watering and no air flow. I find what is great is covering your soil with top dressing and also coco coir on top of your substrates. And there are hardly on my sticky traps.
I think, in wintertime giving to much water in one session can also become a problem, because the substrate can stay wet way to long and can cause trouble for the roots as well
Best video ever! ❤ I do find that I need to water more in the winter. The heat just dries them out. I just move and currently hooking up humidifiers. But I really hate to clean them!!!! Any tips?
Aww thank you! I'm super bad at cleaning my humidifier to be honest. Using a combo of humidifiers, pebble trays, grouping plants and potentially cling-filming the soil is perhaps a way you could avoid the clean too often?
i have a question about dry rot ! if u could make a video or a short about how it happens that would be so good cos i’ve heard of it and think i’ve had it but not certain ! xx
SF Nematodes are great for large infestations but I had a professional gardener tell me that making a mosquito bits tea with boiling water activates the bacteria and makes it extremely potent. I tried it every watering and I eradicated my entire infestation in my house.
I soak mosquito bits in water once a month & water my plants with it. BTI is harmless to the plants, soil, myco, etc. I haven’t seen a gnat since I started doing that. It’s very inexpensive whereas nematodes are more costly.
When you use cllear pots, does algae show up? I've been thinking about making the switch to keep an eye on the roots, but heard it can get a little funky
How do you keep your moss poles hydrated without making the soil consistently damp? I just put some in with my Monstera Thai Con and have been running into that problem. The moss doesn't go below the substrate and I had thought I packed it in correctly.
Hey, really useful video thank you! Where can I get clear plastic plant pots from? Also I’ve just ordered myself a moisture meter off eBay yayy, I do not want root rot!
Could you compare the colors of your growlights for me please? In my Collection I have 4 different lights and it drives me nuts that they make a different kind of coldish white light in every corner. So I want to change them next year to lights of the same color. I‘m thinking about a mother light in the cabinet and I could Switch out my hanging lamp for Sansi but I want to make sure before I purchase that they look alike colorwise. Soltech would be an Option too. If you have one and could compare it as well that would be so helpfull
This is my first winter with a more exotic plant range and I am mainly worried about temperature. We’re a family of five and with energy bills so high, our thermostat is set at 17 degrees, for us that’s no problem, but is it too cold for the plants?…. 😕
It confuses me when people don't want to use nematodes because they're grossed out at the thought of microscopic worms... you ALREADY HAVE microscopic wormy-maggots in the substrate, that's what baby flies are! You aren't adding anything which wasn't there already, you're just recruiting some to work for you! 😂
hey i have a question. how do you water a moss pole without watering the full pot. my monstera ginny is new to a moss pole and i want it to latch onto it. i fine that the moss pole is all ways dry! and i know that my poor baby dosent need a watering
When you keep the pole consistently moist it's easir to monitor as you often don't need to rehydrate the pole that much. If you feel the bottom of the pole and keep an eye on that as you water you can make sure you don't give it too much
I am in the very cold Midwest of the US. What do you do about wanting your plant as close to windows as possible for more light but have very cold drafty windows? And, now that the windows are getting very cold, I struggle with severe condensation on the windows. Do I dehumidify and just get a humid cabinet? Thoughts?
Have you tried a layer of bubble wrap on the windows? You simply spritz the bubble wrap with water and stick it to the windows, and it peels off super easily further down the line. It can help to insulate them and protect your plants
I have the same problem. I’ve put old blankets in front of the windows and that helps a bit but what helps the most is putting the shutters that are on the windows down as soon as it gets dark. No condensation and the windows are less drafty. I don’t know if you have them (I was told they are rather a German thing) but it really helps 🙈
Hi Claire! I’m not sure if you’ll see this comment, but maybe someone will be able to help. I currently have two monstera Thai Constellations (my pride and joys) in a South East facing windows. They get decent indirect light all day. I usually have a humidifier running to help boost the humidity. As of a few days ago, I noticed light brown spots appearing on the one plant’s white sections. One is a newer leaf. I know this typically is a symptom of overwatering, however I haven’t watered for a few weeks. Could this be a problem with our drop in temp and having the humidifier running? We also don’t get as much sun this time of year, it is usually very cloudy. Thank you!
It's hard to say, but I'd have thought perhaps it's just your plant adjusting to the change of seasons. It sounds like you're doing everything right in regards to humidity. Thai's can be very sensitive to environmental change
Sorry I was not able to focus that much as I have ADHD too (I also have hyperfixations plants gebus like you:D please check begonia crackling rose) but recently my plants in leca started to rot, even I did not change anything :/ Is it cold? To warm? I do not get it :(
Hydrogen peroxide at or below 3% is actually not As effective at Removing Root Rot. There are specific root rot solutions available, but you can Always just add Mycorrhiza instead, which will both help with the root rot As Well As Support the Plant long term 😊 (considering you dont use chlorinated Water to Water the plants)
If you're worried about it being too cold you could always try putting some bubble wrap onto the window. You can just spritz it with water and it'll stick. It won't mess with the light, but will just help to insulate things for your plants
For checking the soil moisture before i got back into the groove, i used two paper clips and a voltmeter. How i dealt with the bugs was i had to break out the grow tent to control the lighting at night. The light attracts the insects especially right when the sun goes down. I noticed some people get weird right when the sun goes down too.🪰😆
I honestly find that im way more motivated for repotting plants and plant maintenance during the winter than i am the spring - probably because I’m stuck inside with nothing else to do lol

I have seriously lost almost 20 of my plants since winter started
Best video ever! ❤
I do find that I need to water more in the winter.
Love ❤
I love house plants but aquarium plants are WAY easier because you can control the environment better🌱🐠
I'd love to set up a little aquarium for plants at some point. Do you have any favourites?
When you use cllear pots, does algae show up? I've been thinking about making the switch to keep an eye on the roots, but heard it can get a little funky
What substrate do you use to start seeds?
If I already have mosquito bits in the soil will it kill the nematodes?
How do you keep your moss poles hydrated without making the soil consistently damp? I just put some in with my Monstera Thai Con and have been running into that problem. The moss doesn't go below the substrate and I had thought I packed it in correctly.
Hey, really useful video thank you! Where can I get clear plastic plant pots from? Also I’ve just ordered myself a moisture meter off eBay yayy, I do not want root rot!
Orchid pots on Amazon are typically transparent. The tall transparent tower pots I tend to buy from Soil Ninja or Eastern Tropicals
How on earth do you water your hanging plants? So curious! I absolutely love your videos 🎉
I've got a mini step ladder. I thought about a pulley system, but the steps are no hassle for me!
1000%
Where do you get your moss from?
I was repotting my plant. How soil is too much soil for in my coffee?
hey i have a question. how do you water a moss pole without watering the full pot. my monstera ginny is new to a moss pole and i want it to latch onto it. i fine that the moss pole is all ways dry! and i know that my poor baby dosent need a watering
Does anyone know if grow lights emit UVA and UVB that would be harmful to skin?
@ thank you!!
Does the moisture meter damage the plants roots?
Not if you carefully push it into the soil. Even if there's a little root breakage it's highly unlikely to harm the plant
Sorry I was not able to focus that much as I have ADHD too (I also have hyperfixations plants gebus like you:D please check begonia crackling rose) but recently my plants in leca started to rot, even I did not change anything :/ Is it cold? To warm? I do not get it :(
Ugh, the brown tips are starting 😢. Makes the plant look kinda funky, but I know it’ll eventually pass 😊
💚
Hydrogen peroxide at or below 3% is actually not As effective at Removing Root Rot. There are specific root rot solutions available, but you can Always just add Mycorrhiza instead, which will both help with the root rot As Well As Support the Plant long term 😊 (considering you dont use chlorinated Water to Water the plants)
I do find it quite odd that people who like nature are also squeamish about natural solutions. Nematodes are fantastic 😊
Why do you pull the roots out rather than just pot it up?
I don't think there's a way to watch it without subtitles. I don't know enough English to understand it
There should be a "CC" button for closed captions (subtitles)
The video says subtitles unavailable. (Second icon from the left)
I find moisture meters useless!
Hi Claire 👋 I live in a rented flat with terrible double glazing windows, should I still put plants on the window sill or is it too cold for them? 🪴💚
