Personally I didn't mind the fact that mk7s Wii retro tracks weren't much of an improvement because it was more the novelty of being able to play Wii tracks on a 3ds which made them feel more special for me

Yeah MKWii just nailed it with the Retro Tracks. Still my favourite selection in the series so far. Don't get me wrong, I love the reimaginings in MK8, but it was obvious that some games (MK64) were running out of tracks to use.
I like 7 the most. It has tracks like Mushroom Gorge, Waluigi Pinball and Daisy Cruiser.
@@Gooomsire 7 has a great selection too. Probably number 2 for me. Then 8, which feel more like Nitro tracks then Retros, and finally DS, which has the worst selection imo, but they were just starting the whole Retro thing.
In my opinion 7's selection is on par (Shell Cup is noticeably better, imo Leaf Cup as well, but most of the debate boils down to preference, like for example, liking Airship Fortress or DK Mountain more). If they remade a harder Bowser's Castle instead of GBA BC1 it'd probably be undisputed.

I think 7 has the best selection of retro tracks, but 8's are better due to the reimaginings.
7 is better with the selection, but 8 did absolutely better with improving and upgrading the tracks

Personally, I feel MK7 was where the retro tracks started to get good. Mario Kart DS and Wii changed almost nothing when adding the tracks (N64 Mario Raceway, GCN Luigi Circuit) so when 7 and 8 actually changed things like adding more elevation to the GBA tracks, and making them feel more modern, it can make people feel like they’re new tracks, which is what they should go for more often.
I feel like they got better with each entry. DS had bad picks with some tracks being downgrades to their originals. Wii had every track be almost the same as its original, and it had some good pics. 7s tracks started to add new mechanics to the tracks plus having some phenomenal picks. 8s retros were incredible reimagined takes on the original tracks that make them feel like all new tracks. Retro tracks just continued to evolve with Nintendo getting better at them with each game.

Im surprised the n64 Yoshi Vally’s inability to keep track of placement not being carried over to MK8 wasn’t considered a blow to democracy
Oh TRUE. No you're right it definitely is a blow to democracy, I just completely forgot that's how it worked on the 64.
also for banshee boardwalk, remember. they made those tracks brighter because the game was meant to be played on the original DS screen, which was much darker than the lite and 3DS
You seem to be a fan of the retro tracks being nearly identical to the nitro ones besides looking better and maybe a glider/water/anti gravity section added here and there. So why do you specifically dislike it so much when 7 does this to Wii courses, but like it in literally all other cases? Am I missing something?
3:07 the bumps from Ghost Valley are present in Boo Lake and Broken Pier, and the blocks in Vanilla Lake are functionally identical to the walls of Boo Lake, Broken Pier, and Ghost Valley.
I feel like you should've went with the "it's worse" option for DS Airship Fortress in MK7, as beyond a glider ramp you mentioned no further improvements, and that justification was also used to give the 3DS's Wii tracks a "it's worse" rating.
Edit: Same goes for 3DS Music Park in MK8.
Yeah but both DS Airship Fortress and 3DS Music Park look so much better than their original Nitro Track, which is enough to make them better.

Those ones have graphical improvements. The Wii tracks on 3DS do not.
Retro tracks have always been a curiosity to me and this video was an excellent breakdown of them! Great work!
I really enjoy the visual and aesthetic upgrade to most of the retro tracks but I really wish they would have left in more of the alternate paths/ability to explore like 14:30 & 19:22

Actually Mario Kart 7 removed that one strange shortcut bounce mushroom to the left at the very start, so it is a downgrade
And completely neutrally, there’s 3 mushrooms on the right path into the cave instead of 2
3:05 SNES Rainbow Road thwomps are actually invincible thwomps.
The difference with regular thwomps is that wheb you collide with them instead of simply bumping or being stuck you act like if a racer with a star hit you.
You forgot about Mario Kart Tour's versions of the retro tracks.

the best retro tracks for me in 7 and 8 are when they use the mechanics of those games, 7 being the flying and underwater and 8 being 0 gravity

Well, I guess we'll be waiting for at least 2023 for maybe a follow-up once all the Booster Course Pack Tracks are released in MK8 to lump it together in MKT.

That's not really the case, Mario Kart Wii actually sold 37.32 million copies, the number shown in the video is wrong (it was probably an editing error because it has the same number of copies as Super Circuit)

the difference between thwomps and star thwomps as shown in the super circuit section is that star thwomps spin you out if you bump into them, while still retaining the ability to crush you i think

Good vid! I personally thought that the MK8 retro tracks butchered the nostalgia of some of the soundtracks. SNES Rainbow Road’s music is still good, but doesn’t hit like it did in MK7. Same with Toad’s Turnpike. And I think that N64 Rainbow Road just was kinda butchered in some ways.
mk8 snes raibow road is also larger than it was in order to host 12 players making it far easier

also for mushroom gorge you forgot that they removed a shortcut due to a bug that you could perform on mario kart wii
as a super circuit superfan, i have to disagree on cheese land and ribbon road. the appeal to me was always that the tracks were difficult, with constant steering inputs needed to stay on the road in cheese land, and the manner of needing to hit nearly every boost panel on the lap in ribbon road to stay with the pack. idk. i dont really play with items on and more do it only for the racing quality of tracks so i probably have a different view than the wide majority of people. I will say that i LOVED the recreations of Snow Land and Boo Lake in the booster course pass, as those really felt like loving tributes, while Sky Garden looks like shit with the new layout.

Its a mystery how they fumbled the gcn retros so much in ds. Ive seen custom retro gc tracks as mods for mk ds that actually do stay true and run native on ds
Mario Circuit 3 also has the dash panel and oils in the SNES version, I dont know why they arent there for you, maybe its in time trial or so? And Mario Circuit 2, the oil is in the SNES version as well.

the selection of retro tracks in MK7 is probably my favourite in the series but I kinda wish they held back on some of the retro tracks for base MK8 instead of choosing the four best tracks from Wii. The 3DS' limitations led to them all feeling like watered down versions and I don't understand why they keep replacing the bridge with a glider ramp in Maple Treeway, the bridge was so much more interesting.

Honestly, I think all of the Wii tracks in MK7 are actively worse because of the forced-feeling addition of glider ramps and underwater sections. It takes some very creative parts of the originals, like the pipe in Koopa Cape and the net on Maple Treeway, and makes them feel a lot more generic imo.

I just wish they would find a really good way to remake SNES and GBA tracks really well. Also, Wario Stadium,Wario Colosseum, Rainbow Road DS & Wii, and so many more courses need to be remade too.
I feel like 7's Kalimari Desert is worse because unlike the N64 version, the train is smaller and doesn't make you stop very often so the train is pretty much just decoration in a normal race now which is a shame because it was hilarious seeing all the other racers stop or crash into the train.
GBA Mario circuit is also flipped horizontally in MK8

Technically, Mario kart 8 deluxe's nitro tracks are retro tracks because they were first featured on Mario kart 8 regular and not on the switch edition. The only not retro tracks are the two fzeros, animal crossing, Hyrule circuit, super bell subway, wild woods, dragon driftway, sky high sundae, excitebike arena, and ice ice outpost. Don't tell me they're dlc. They're brand new tracks for eight deluxe.
Lol 8 Deluxe is just a port of the 8. So how can they be a retro track?

Wario Stadium and Tick Tock clock have no charm in MK8 compared to MKDS, but I really love N64 Rainbow Road, GBA Ribbon Road, 3DS Neo Bowser City and GCN Yoshi Circuit. Only speaking about mk8
Hard to disagree about Tick Tock Clock. The original (which is still great btw) feels like a bootleg compared to the remake now

but still you were better off playing the original tracks in Super Circuit, like Shy Guy Beach, infact, don't include retro tracks until Mario Kart DS, but the architecture for the DS should have been half a Gamecube or quarter of a Gamecube, just like how the Wii was 2 Gamecubes in one

Those sales numbers at the beginning don't look right at all...MKWii was the best selling game in the series for years until MK8DX overtook it only recently.
