It is because sondheim is very unique, and complicated. If you are auditioning for a show they need to see you can follow the correct notes for the show :)
You've just reminded me, omg! Random story time! I didn't see the Little Mermaid in full until I was 15 and I could recognise the chorus of "Part of Your World" but I'd basically never heard the song, so for a long time I actually thought "Somewhere That's Green" and "Part of Your World" were the same song. It made sense to me cause, ya know, mermaids don't see much grass. That was the logic behind that strange assumption.
Kate's Adventures when I was in second grade my friend watched little mermaid at her house for her birthday party and we were watching and we got to that part and I said oh my gosh it's somewhere that's green. None of the second grade girls knew what i was talking about
I am going to be in the Little mermaid jr. and I was going to sing part of your world, and I have an alto to soprano range but I want to sing in a mezzo voice but I just can't belt the end. I really want to be Ariel, but it could be too high for me to belt. (Keep in mind I'm 12 and this is for the kids camp at my community theater.)
how do you feel about girls trying out with guys songs? I'm an alto and I do have some songs in mind (There's a Fine Fine Line, Maybe This Time, Nothing, etc.) but I like the way my voice sounds with Stars from Les Miserables. I'm trying out for Beauty and The Beast and Belle is a mezzo part so I'm a bit iffy, but I also am grateful for any part I get. Thoughts?
Hilari Parsons Hey Hilari! 💕 Depends on the audition situation, but in almost every case I'd recommend against singing a male song. Additionally, the personality/musicality of the song doesn't fit Belle. But that's just my opinion! 😊
Katherine Steele I definitely will, I was just focusing on trying to find something that fit my voice part, but now I can make it even better, thanks so much! 💞
What a great video! This is very helpful advice. I'm always debating what songs to sing for auditions, and you've given me a few ways to look around that I haven't tried before. Love the Sondheim exception. So very true.
I love that you talk about how to tell a story in say 1 minute, in the dance world well in song and dance sections the max amount of time you have to portray your character and storyline is 3 minutes, and half of that is only vocals. It can be done people!!
I'm gonna share my recent audition story in hoping it helps someone else! So I was auditioning for Fiddler On The Roof and I spent FOREVER trying to find 2 songs for the audition. They needed to be contrasting, show off my range and still suit the character (I was going for Hodel). So first I picked Home from Beauty and the Beast, because the slow sad kind of mourning is very similar to Far From The Home I Love, which is the song Hodel sings, and I had recently sung it at a recital so I was very familiar with it. I spent more time trying to find a second song, because it needed to be more uptempo and show more of my upper range (which Home didn't). I looked up shows that the composers of Fiddler had also done together, and found She Loves Me, which I had never heard of, and picked Vanilla Ice Cream because it seemed fun. FUN FACT! When I showed up to the audition, a girl was singing Home to the creative team in the other room, and I automatically knew there was no way I could sing Home and still get the part I wanted. Sooooo I changed it last minute and performed God Help The Outcasts and Vanilla Ice Cream... GOOD NEWS! I still got the role of Hodel :D
One of my dream roles is Quasimodo in Hunchback of Notre Dame (one of my favorite shows of all time), and I always thought If I Can't Love Her (key of F) would be a perfect audition song
This is helping my anxiety so much!! Im auditioning for the FIRST TIME EVER and AAAAAAAA. It is really reassuring cause the audition song i had in mind fit all of those beginning "rules". So im super proud of myself and while still stomach twisty, it's excited stomach twisties!! Thank you so much for sharing!!! 🧡
I auditioned for Annie with I Speak Six Language from 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. I ended up getting the role of Lily St. Regis. I think it worked? I picked some good songs and then narrowed it down to that one.
this video is exactly what i needed! thanks for making all of your videos so informative/entertaining because before i found your channel, even the thought of pursuing a BFA terrified me, but now i am 99% sure that it's the path i should take
IVY!!!! 💝 I'm SO ridiculously happy to hear that- that's why I started making these in the first place! And thank you :) Let me know if you have any questions/video requests!
Katherine, you are a plethora of knowledge. Thank you so much for being kind enough to share so much helpful and useful advice for all of us in your outstanding videos.
This is my first year in musical theater and my school is putting on a production of Once Upon a Mattress. I'm auditioning for Princess Winifred, even though I know I won't get it because it's my first year. Since it was written in 1959 and has a jazzy feel to it, so I was thinking of doing Feeling Good by Nina Simone (I have a low voice for a female), but do you have any suggestions? My knowledge on musicals and their songs is very limited.
Dalia Moreno I'm just a sophomore in Musical Theatre in college, but I would recommend something both fun, belty, and princess-y. Maybe 'Morning Person' from Shrek the Musical.
It is a bit high for my voice (as most songs are), but I'll see if my vocal coach can transpose it. Thank you so much for the advice. I was also thinking b of doing Here I Am from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels...?
ITS MY SENIOR YEAR PLEASE HELP😭 ONE OF MY DREAM ROLES IS NINA ROSARIO AND MY LAST YEAR OF HIGHSCHOOL MY DIRECTOR DECIDED TO PUT ON IN THE HEIGHTS!!! I WAS ORIGINALLY GOING TO SING SOMETHING FROM THE SHOW BUT HE SAID HE WANTS SOMETHING FROM A DIFFERENT MUSICAL AND NOW IM STRESSING OUT BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SING😭💙 ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS
This year, my elementary school preformed "The Little Mermaid Jr." and I auditioned for Ursula but I sang "Part Of Your World" because it was the only song I could choose that was remotely close to "Poor Unfortunate Souls" and the cruel irony was I got Jetsam, Ursula's female henchman while my friend, who I was better than no lie, got Ursula. I say I was better since she didn't want to sing the head voice lines and offstage she had to use a microphone and sing what we all called the "Ahhs" that were extremely high and I almost did them for her. It was a let-down but I was in more scenes. I know this isn't what musical theater is about, but it was my first speaking line and I nailed it.
Hi just an update, I commented on another of your videos about me wanting to be Seaweed and I watched this video and GOT THE PART!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH
Hey Kat, I know this video is kinda old now but I’m auditioning for legally blonde JR and really want Paulette (or Elle but I personally think I am more suited to Paulette) and I need to pick an audition song that isn’t from the show. It says to prepare a ballad. It doesn’t specifically say 32 bars but I’ve auditioned for this theatre company before and usually the audition song maximum is 2 mins. I’m thinking along the lines of kindergarten boyfriend or a section of I won’t say I’m in love because it gives me similar vibes to Ireland.
Thank you girl! I'm still looking for college rep pieces but I'm definitely closer. I'm definitely the shrugging girl lol and honor on you, honor on your family, honor on your cow for theatre Thursdays
Hey people of the comments is it okay to sing a song 1.) originally meant for the opposite gender and 2.) from the show you're auditioning for. I'm auditioning for Annie and I really want to sing You're Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile but I'm not sure if it's okay to. They just said any song but I don't want to seem lazy by choosing a song from the show, you know?
+Isabella Foriska Hey Isabella! 1) in general, your audition song should match your casting type (which you can learn more about here: th-cam.com/video/wt0toIsjz2g/w-d-xo.html) 2) as long as the auditors didn't say not to, you can totally sing from the show!
So at my school we’re doing Into the Woods and I want to play the part of Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, or Rapunzel (preference in that order) and I want to sing Santa Fe from Newsies starting from “let me go” so I don’t have to curse. Because it’s at school. And I can’t curse. ANYWAYS I’m not sure if it’s the best. I’m a girl, and it’s sung by Jack Kelley (a boy) BUT I’m very confident while singing it and it’s right in my vocal range. I love singing it. What should I do?
katherine you read my mind a year or so forward... i’m currently looking for songs to audition for 13 with (for lucy if you actually care) and the tips you gave which were strangely specific to my situation were actually really helpful. thanks!
Hi! I have an audition tomorrow for "Oliver!". The production company I am doing it with know me quite well and I was going to sing "Freeze Your Brain" from Heathers but I am second guessing myself. I am just auditioning for any part I can get, not very specific. I have a baritone voice
Thank you so much. I've been so nervous about my upcoming audition for Jason in Falsettos and I've been trying to find a good song for my audition. Using your tips, I've narrowed my options down to a few in my range. One of them is the song/song clip "My Father's a Homo" from the same musical. I'm really excited and your tips helped my audanxiety (that's what I call it) so much. Thank you so so so much
I'm auditioning for A Christmas Carol on Saturday! (Probably one of Cratchit's daughters). I plan to sing God Help The Outcasts from Hunchback. I think it's okay. Also, Alan Menken.
My middle school has an extra after school choir that you audition to get into. Do you think That Would Be Enough from Hamilton would be a good song? I auditioned last year and did hear some Hamilton, but not this song in particular. Love your videos!
I am auditioning for Waitress as an ensemble member and I am supposed to do a pop-rock song in the style of Sara Bareilles but I cannot for the life of me find a song! I don't really know that genre too well so if you have any tips our suggestions PLEASE let me know!
I'd recommend creating a Sara Bareilles station on Pandora and seeing what other singer-song writers the algorithm suggests. Additionally, try looking up Ingrid Michaelson and Brandi Carlisle- they have a similar sound. Break a leg! 💕
Oh wow, I didn't even think of that! Thank you so much!! Someone recommended I do c Carole King song since Jessie originated that role on Broadway, but I didn't think Carole sounds anything like Sara
Yes (and have it memorized/performance ready). They probably won't ask to hear the full song, but it's better to be over prepared than under. Bring two copies of the sheet music--one with only the necessary pages/cuts for your 16/32 bar cut and then a clean, full version as well :)
I absolutely loooove your videos and the content and advice you give. It's so informative yet so entertaining! Do you know of any other channels that offer the same type of content you do? Thanks so much!!
Thanks, Gabriella! Not really--that's actually why I started making videos. Broadway.com is one of my fave theatrey channels, though. So that's always fun to watch!
Hi Katherine! I have a request for a Theatre Thursday video: Can you please do a video that just makes a list(s) of several shows that have the same genre? I know you listed a ton in here, but I feel like you could cover more genres and more shows, because you're awesome like that. :)
I might do I love play reharsel, were doing the addams family and i can sing it.It has alot of personality wich is what they want but is kinda a bit too upbeat
if i was to audition for carmen from fame the musical what songs would you suggest to sing i’m a belter any suggestions would help it’s for my last school production thanks :)
Thanks so much!! You never fail to help me with all my theatre advice needs!! You helped me choose a song that I think is good to sing for my audition for JoJo in Suessical!!!
"If you're auditioning for a Sondheim musical, you better sing Sondheim." I've never done a show by him but I can DEFINITELY see how messy things can get if that statement isn't followed. First time I heard "Worst Pies in London" I was amazed people could keep with the tempo changes XD
I'm planning to audition for The Greatest Showman in June. The thing is, it's weird and basically, as long as I sign up I will definitely get a part. But I have to have an audition so the casting directors can decide which character I would be best for. I'm probably going to do A Million Dreams from TGS or Waving Through A Window from DEH, because I can sing both of those fairly well (though I'm not a good singer at all lol)
The problem with the shows I audition for (youth theatre camp) is that they are all small locally written shows, so there isn’t much known about the show before auditions, basically the only thing I know is that it’s contemporary(?) music written in the 2000s
Hey! I just started watching your videos and I enjoy them a lot! I feel a lot of theatre accounts on youtube are just talking about basic broadway gossip which can be entertaining but isn't useful information but you really give aspiring artists advice from the eyes of someone who is experiencing things herself which I love! I was just curious what college you go to? (you might've mentioned it in a past video I just haven't seen all of your videos yet lol) Thank you! Definitely subsribing
Hey Tate!!! Thank you so much, that really means a lot. And welcome to the Theatre Thursday Fam!!! 💕💕 For a few reasons, mainly so I don't seem biased, I don't disclose exactly where I live/study. But I can tell you that I had to make some decisions at some point involving Ithaca, Otterbein, Hartt, Montclair, Rider, Texas State, Oklahoma State, Shenandoah Conservatory, Millikin, and Utah 😊
I love your channel so much! It's super helpful and you need more subs :)) I was wondering how you personally play the villian? I'm currently playing Mrs Hannigan and tips would be great! xxx
You're so sweet, thank you! 😍😍 i'll talk about it more in an upcoming video, but the main thing about villains: they don't realize they're the villain. In their own minds, everything they do is perfectly justified. Like, they're rarely being intentionally evil--their own ideas/motivations just go against the main character's. (If that makes sense haha) And congrats on Miss Hannigan!! 💕
Hey Katherine, I'm trying out for the newsies for the Role as Katherine plumber but I don't know what song I should use for try outs. Do u have any suggestions? I love you so much your amazing 💕💕💕❤️❤️❤️🎭🎭🎭
Auditioning for School of Rock with a pretty professional community theater group. I looked an Andrew Lloyd Webber stuff but nothing's really working out. I have a Mezzo voice leaning more to soprano and I really want to be Rosalie. Any tips?
Once I was at an audition for Shrek the Musical, I wasn't auditioning though, I went with my friend who was auditioning, myself only being there for moral support. Any who, there was one guy trying for Shreks role, he was a very loud person who didn't really commit to things and was _very_ sassy. He hit play on his phone and soon he was singing All Star. I'm not even kidding. At some parts he even belted somehow. The weirdest part: even though he didn't get the part he wanted he was apparently perfect for Lord Farquad.
I audition for Millie from Thoroughly Modern Millie and I sung History of Wrong Guys from Kinky Boots and the panel loved it. Didn't get cast because I was blonde :(
I can’t believe I’m just seeing this now 😂 I wish I had these tips a month ago. I would have sang something from Hello Dolly for an audition if I knew this. Then again the auditioners were two 13 year olds 😂 I love this video.
The second week of school I'll be auditioning for my school's production of Beauty and The Beast. My vocal teacher gave me "Dancing Through Life from Wicked" for my Audition song. I'm just not entirely sure if it's relevant to the theme of the show I'm trying out for.
Hey Katherine!! I have an audition for Peter Pan and I wanna go out for Wendy, which songs do you suggest? It would be really helpful to get your advice (I have to do 32 bars of said song)!!
Hey Katherine! I'm properly going to audition for Beauty and Beast in a month, and I always plan for early. So I'm trying to decide what song to audition with, and I was thinking "Once Upon A December" from Anastasia. The only criteria they gave was that it had to be from a show of similar sound.
Do you have to sing a Broadway song for auditions? (Sorry if it is a dumb question, I've never auditioned before but I wanna audition for the next school musical)
I feel like there's a story behind the 'If you're auditioning for Sondheim, you have to sing Sondheim' line
It is because sondheim is very unique, and complicated. If you are auditioning for a show they need to see you can follow the correct notes for the show :)

OH MY GOSH 😂😂😂 love this!! Thank you for sharing!!

Kate's Adventures when I was in second grade my friend watched little mermaid at her house for her birthday party and we were watching and we got to that part and I said oh my gosh it's somewhere that's green. None of the second grade girls knew what i was talking about
Theater Cecil Haha, that is too cute! You get a serious amount of cool points for knowing "Somewhere That's Green" in the second grade!
Kate's Adventures it shows my dad introduced me to musicals at a VERY young age.

If this comment wasn’t from a year ago I would think you did this in El Paso
If it’s for a kids camp don’t belt, just use a strong head voice. You probably won’t have much competition .
Eliza Hamilton yo!
Oops, I sung Kindergarten Boyfriend when I was auditioning for Dorothy.
Big Bean for real? 😂😂😂
And the saga of “weird tiny shoulder girl” begins 😂

I have 5 auditions coming up in the next 3 months so this video is super helpful!
I'm auditioning for Newsies soon and I have to sing something in the style of the show, what would you recommend?
I’m auditioning for Annie the musical tommorow and this really helped
Wish me luck 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
I heard Pasek & Paul right before Lin Manuel-Miranda and I jumped twice.
Oh my gosh, I have auditions in a couple of weeks and this just popped up! Thank you!!!🎭💕
I love the striped pillows in the background!
+Felix Catta thanks!!
No problem! Love your videos!
all your videos are so helpful! & make me feel so much more comfortable when auditioning thankyou! ❤
+Ruby Henshaw happy to hear it Ruby!! 💕
Love your videos!
i’m obsessed with beetlejuice too😂 love your
profile pic
I’m a little teacup short and stout Thanks
I'm doing auditions for Annie next week! I'll try to keep updating on who I get!

+Greta Lindberg AAAH thank you so much!! And welcome to the #TheatreThursdayFam 🎉💕🎭
I JUST SUBSCRIBED TODAY ADN OMG I LOVE YOU YOUR VIDEOS ARE AMAZING YOUR FUNN AND LOVABLE AS HELL....
Ilysm you’re funny. And talented and your videos give me confidence and now I’m auditioning for the school musical
I feel like she'd be perfect as Tracy in Hairspray
Every conversation of mine turns into a Kelli O’Hara shrine
any ideas for singin’ in the rain? The guidelines are just 16-32 bars of any showtune
I really want to sing The Room Wherw It Happens but I dunno whether to sing Hamilton or Burr’s part lmao
isn't that Burr's solo except for like one line at the beginning lol
+heyitsmejess anytime!! 💕
one more question. They said to prepare 16-32 bars so do I still bring piano sheet music for the entire song?
Yes (and have it memorized/performance ready). They probably won't ask to hear the full song, but it's better to be over prepared than under.
Bring two copies of the sheet music--one with only the necessary pages/cuts for your 16/32 bar cut and then a clean, full version as well :)
These are great tips! Thank you!!
+Abi Alston happy to help!! 💕
This is a video I wish more people would make! This has some really points!
Thanks! 💝
Hi! I will be auditioning for the role of Eliza sychler and I will be singing blue from heathers
Good luck I hope you get the role
+Miss Squish omg yay exciting!!! Break a leg!! 🦄💖
"If you're auditioning for a Sondheim musical, you better sing Sondheim." I've never done a show by him but I can DEFINITELY see how messy things can get if that statement isn't followed. First time I heard "Worst Pies in London" I was amazed people could keep with the tempo changes XD
+meme meme oh yeah!! It's wild!!
One of my go to's is Waving Through A Window.
i have an audition for Sweeney Todd in a few days, and haven't done anything with it so far.... thank you 2016 Katherine!!!
I'm in 10th grade and i have an audition on Wednesday for our musical play and I'm so nervous this really help!
For a few reasons, mainly so I don't seem biased, I don't disclose exactly where I live/study.
(If that makes sense haha)
And congrats on Miss Hannigan!! 💕
+Katherine Steele that was very helpful thank you!
i'm auditioning for tallulah in bugsy malone and i've been binge watching these videos so ty :]]
Hey Katherine, I'm trying out for the newsies for the Role as Katherine plumber but I don't know what song I should use for try outs. Do u have any suggestions? I love you so much your amazing 💕💕💕❤️❤️❤️🎭🎭🎭
These tips are so helpful thank you for making this!❤
+daaiisy princess thank YOU! 🦄 happy to help
Didn't get cast because I was blonde :(
Okay, so I followed all of these tips for my school musical, and I got the lead!
I saw this and I have an audition for today and I’m super terrified for a broadway show choir audition
Once you said Lin Manuel Maranda I was like: "I HOPE THAT YOU- BURRRRRNNNNNNNN"
Hey Katherine!! I have an audition for Peter Pan and I wanna go out for Wendy, which songs do you suggest? It would be really helpful to get your advice (I have to do 32 bars of said song)!!
Hey Katherine! I'm properly going to audition for Beauty and Beast in a month, and I always plan for early. So I'm trying to decide what song to audition with, and I was thinking "Once Upon A December" from Anastasia. The only criteria they gave was that it had to be from a show of similar sound.
+Sidney White Hey Sidney! Personally, I think that would be fine 💕 You can check out Alan Menken's other works for ideas too! Break a leg 😊
Do you have to sing a Broadway song for auditions? (Sorry if it is a dumb question, I've never auditioned before but I wanna audition for the next school musical)
I study at Actor Therapy with Ryan Scott Oliver and Lindsay Mendez and they've helping find great new songs for me.
I'm thinking of doing All That's Known from Spring Awakening for an Audition for JD and I think that'll work idk though
I love your videos they're so funny yet so relatable.
+The Awkward Flower Child 🦄💖 thank you!!
