Hi guys! What's up, it's me, Katherine, and I, apparently, enjoy using commas, a lot. You know where I discovered my love of commas? In AP ENGLISH! That's right, we're headed back to school today with tips for high school theatre actors! These tips totally apply if you're not in high school yet or if you've already graduated. Just slightly adjust the high school advice to fit your current lifestyle! Today, we'll be talking about the most valuable things I learned as a high school theatre student + what I wish I had done differently.
Personally, I chose to get really involved in my high school's theatre department: I did a ton of shows, I was on the improv team for 4 years, I was a TA for the freshmen theatre class, I was Drama Club secretary junior year & promoted to president for senior year. I mention this in the video, but I really wanted to mention it again. High school is what you make it. If you want to make friends & have a good time, you need to put some effort into it. I also copied a bunch of helpful links below-- they're all videos that are PERFECT for young actors & aspiring performers.

For your points about gossip and quitting.... we did the little mermaid at my school. A very talented dedicated senior was a shoe in for Ariel. Everyone at auditions and in school would tell her how she was gonna get the part. But everyone was blind sided when a junior got the part and she got a mersister. She quit the show. Other seniors who got snubbed also quit. I felt both bad and honored cuz I got a mersister and I’m a sophomore. Theres still debate over whether she was justified. The girl who got Ariel felt terrible and it affected her relationship with a lot of seniors who stayed on. Moral of the story: no part is guaranteed and don’t gossip abt casting cuz people are gonna get hurt

Wow, so glad no one spread any rumors about anyone getting roles around my school. Two years ago we did the little mermaid and 8th-12th grades can audition I was an eighth grader going against high schoolers for ariel. And.I.Won. and everyone was supportive and no one as upset, because the seniors got other roles.

When I was in grade 11, I got my first lead role as Annie. About two minutes after the cast list was posted, I could hear some of the grade 12s complaining about the 11s stealing all the leads (as we had a double cast and the other Annie as well as one Hannigan were both 11s too). Kind of ruined the moment.
Here's another Gossip-Gone-Wrong example for my Middle School:
We did Frozen Jr, and everybody had opinions of who would get who. The one girl (let's call her Sarah for privacy reasons), that everybody assumed would get the role of Anna, ended up in ensemble. And another girl (let's call her Lily) got Anna. Sarah was pissed about the mis-assumptions, and started spreading rumours abour how "Lily bribed the director". Lily quit from the despair of the hatred she got, and Sarah, her understudy, swept up the role, before people started to tell the director about what she had done. Neither Sarah nor Lily performed in the Musical.
Just don't lie or gossip; especially when it's not true.

I seriously doubt that those girls are cast in that directors shows in the future. I do not know one director, no matter how good someone is wants to work with that.
lol i was anna in frozen jr. at my school
I actually was Elsa in my schools production of Frozen Jr., but before I was cast a friend of mine started saying she already got the role of Elsa, that the casting director already told her. I was kind of crushed... then when I found out I got the role, and she got Bulda, the troll, she went on to brag to me about how she was in more songs, and was just kind of bitter towards me despite our close friendship before... Especially don't spread rumors about yourself guys... If you get called out it's embarrassing and can definitely make you bitter about it. Especially don't let a Jr. version of a musical ruin a good friendship, it really hurts.
The big issues we have with our drama teacher is that
1. She plays favorites baaadd
2. She doesn’t give the background characters that speak there script at all. We learn by looking at the main casts stuff.
It’s hard to do your best when she doesn’t let you.
Big mistake on her part, she is missing out on encouraging and supporting the others talents. FAIL. AND EVERYONE SHOULD GET A SCRIPT.
Gosh, the director for the play I was in was similar. When we were on hold during tech I literally heard her whisper to the assistant student director, “this is why I hate doing plays with mainly freshmen and sophomores, they don’t even know what they’re doing.” Luckily the ASD doesn’t suck and told the teacher director that she shouldn’t say that and that she’s the one who casted us.

our drama teacher has a quote on the wall that says "every minute of every day is an audition" and i feel like that is something really important for everyone to remember

my advice: please don’t be that one person who keeps on breaking a prop or won’t be quiet backstage even after an asm reminds you

Only problem is, at my school the Drama Teacher doesn't really know what she's doing and no one in the class does either. There isn't a lot of teaching involved with is really sad. I feel like the arts are slowly dying. I am still in my drama club, but not in the class anymore. It was very frustrating. This year, I ended up taking Drama at this college and it's an amazing experience and then I also still do things at my community theater! Thank you for this video❤️❤️

I’m in drama club at an online highschool...so I kinda have no idea how to act. Do I have to know to join a Theatre Program in college? Or can I just arrive as like, a super super beginner who has a strong voice and loves musicals?
Same!! In parents evening, my drama teacher said the complete opposite of me and everyone in my class never wants me to join their group and none of them give me anything to do in the drama performance we have to create, yet they all are very quick to point out that I'm not doing anything. Um, excuse me, but that's cuz I can't cuz none of them actually listen to any of my ideas!

Mine doesn’t have theatre either and the closest to community we have doesn’t have acting and it isn’t actually an already made performance. I cry too.
My director's favorite statement is "you're always auditioning." This means that you could be the most talented person in the world, but if you dont take direction well, or you're always talking backstage, or you dont show up to rehearsals on time, you might not get cast again.

She is absolutely right, I tell my actors that ALL the time. I actually just had auditions and this girl we will call her Cathy, had a fantastic audition, but her behavior in prior productions knocked her out of a lead role.

My high school musical this year is High School Musical. PLOT TWIST!
One thing that I've learned throughout my high school theatre productions is that you shouldn't just quit because you didn't get a main role. In both my freshman (High School Musical) and sophomore (Beauty and the Beast) year people didn't show up for rehearsals or left due to previous commitments, so I ended up getting their roles! So, stick with it and you can still have a chance for a role!

I'm designing costumes for our main stage play, Our Town. It's so fun and I love doing it. It's honestly really fun to dress all my friends and because I know them. They are sweeties.

I have a question for the Theatre Thursday Fam: Did/does your school have a theatre hierarchy?? (Seniors gets leads, juniors get principle role, etc.) If so, what's your opinion?
Mine used to but then switched it to freshmen and 6th grade first (sometimes). I think that it's good because it makes upperclassmen feel special and the underclassmen have something to look forward to. It changed when I was going into 8th so was a little salty cause 3 years for yet another ensemble role. I think that unless someone that perfectly fits the role, should be left to upperclassmen. I see the pros and cons
Alec Pearson At my school, only 1 freshman in the entire 100 years of the school has gotten a lead. I agree that the seniors should have their moment in the sun, but I feel like it's unfair to the underclassmen because even if they have an amazing audition that blows everyone out of the water, they still lose out to the seniors. (At least at my school)
It's kinda like that at my community theatre. All of the people who have been with the company for years, and are younger like 15-25, get leads and featured parts and most of the new people aren't really given a fair shot. At least in my opinion. At auditions the new people always get cut off and overshadowed a lot more than the people who have been in a billion shows. I'm a bit biased cuz I haven't been with the company as long because i move a lot, but I just feel like my theatre could be a bit more open and welcoming to new people. I understand working with the same people is great cuz you know them and all but it doesn't give others a fair shot, I mean we have to start somewhere. :/
my school's policy is that if there is a casting decision between 2 students, for example one senior and one sophomore, they will give it to the senior. but, my directors do not really give upperclassmen a leading edge other than that. i just think of it like it could be a senior's last performance ever, so as a cast you should give them a shot:)
Honestly, if you're talented, you're talented. Regardless of age. Someone who is fourteen could have the talent of a senior, or better. Or a senior may not be able to keep a pitch. It just is a level of talent.

Ok Ik this is an old video but, my audition for the school show was eh like not BAD but nothing amazing. I was given the role of a lioness (the lion king Jr) and was kind of upset I didn’t get a lead. I decided that the best thing I could do was show the directors/teachers/choreographer (all those people) that I can stand out and take a bigger role. I practiced choreography, focused on picking it up quickly, sang out (not obnoxiously) and worked my butt off. It did exactly what i was hoping. All the people running the show especially the choreographer in the director noticed how quickly I was picking up choreography and teaching others when they didn’t know it. I became the one and only dance captain (there wasn’t even supposed to be one) and got so many compliments from numerous people involved in the show. I was treated every rehearsal like an audition like you said and this video helped me a lot. I closed the show with a very good reputation, and thank u for that. ❤️😊
I definitely agree with the bonding thing, the people in my theatre group are some of the best people I know...they've definetely became some of lifelong friends of mine and they really make my high school theatre experience for me 😊💕

this is awesome advice! i'm still currently in high school and living my best high school theatre nerd heading to music theatre college life. i can say that bringing a headshot and resume would probably not be the best idea. you'll seem uptight and people might think you think you're better than them. that's just from experience in the theatre. i always enjoy your videos much love ❤️

I am going into hs this year, and I'm really sad that STUPID COVID will probably keep us from having theatre club! We wont even get to actually be at school, which is extremely scary for a soon to be freshman. I really wish he was ACTUALLY like hsm tho

So do I honestly.
We did hairspray a couple years back. A fantastic year 11 (exemplary in every subject, performing arts included) really really wanted to play Tracy. It was her dream role and she wasn't going to pursue the arts after this. Her last year, her last role, and she got ensemble. With a bunch of year eights and nines, some of which had never danced before. She was very upset (understandably) but stayed in the show, still giving her all, still being lovely to everyone. When the year SEVEN (youngest year group) who had been cast as seaweed turned out to be pompous and unreliable (full on stopped showing up to rehearsals) the year 11 I talked about earlier got his role. Many who saw it said she was the best in the show.
I’m playing a wife & chorus in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which is my first ever musical and I’m so excited!! I’m having a lot of fun and making a bunch of new friends (it’s between 4 local schools which is cool!)
I loved Joseph! My school didn't have enough boys in drama club so I played the brother Benjamin in 8th grade 😂

I felt that part about middle school. I went to a really small private school with kids I've known all my life, and this is my first year of public high school. I'm making friends more easily this year than I ever did at that school, and it definitely helps that theres actually other theater kids at this school

Then canceled because the school hadn't done anything about it and well now were not in school because of this whole pandemic. I'm going straight into high school after this and I'm truly scared. I was going through a lot of your older videos (that's a lie I've been binging your whole channel) and it really has made me feel better. My theatre department in high school is truly the best thing that has happened to me. Right now I'm a junior and have had protrayed the roles of an ensemble character in the Pajama Game (9th), Addaperle in the Wiz (10th) and this year I was blessed with my dream role Audrey in Little Shop.
I met my best friends during this production and we are right now in the starting of our tech week. I take theatre so seriously, it's truly the biggest blessing in my life and what I want to do for the rest of my life.
This advice is really what some people in my show need and I am so lucky I do take my shows so seriously. You never know who could be watching 💞🎭

There's just one problem...
I can't even get into the show ;-;
This year, I'm directing my school's production of Jekyll and Hyde. I expect professionalism from all of the cast members.
I have a tip for when you have a gossip or have tea with someone! Get a designated notebook and when you get home (or heck, maybe even bring it to rehearsal; just don't let anyone see ;)) and write down the gossip or tea so you don't snap at the person because everyone is stressed! You don't wanna be that person or give yourself a bad name! And trust me, this works!
For instance, when I was younger I had a friend (let's call her Sally) and she got a role that I wanted. During tech week, I snapped. It was both from stress and my cat had just passed away suddenly. Anyway, I snapped right in front of the director and that gave me a bad name. It was even worse because that was my first sho out of six. So I had a bad rep for all six shows. And Sally and I don't speak anymore if anyone was wondering. Okay bye, y'all!

this video was really helpful, thank you! I’m a senior this year and it’s my first year ever doing theatre. I decided to do early enrollment for college as well, so I’m never on school campus, I’m at my college classes. I’ve never really liked the majority of the people in my class or at my high school, that’s why I took early enrollment, to be away from those people, but I’ve met a lot of amazing people and good friends in my school’s theatre department on rehearsal days after school and that’s what is making my senior year super good so far! so again, thank you so much for such an informative video 💙

These videos are very helpful. I'm only in 7th grade but I really wanna be apart in my theater apartment in school so these are very helpful
YAY!! Great advice! Today was my 3rd day of rehearsal for my high schools show! I'm only a freshman but I still made it into the ensemble!! Most people who auditioned did not make it in so I'm really proud of my self! Our theatre company is really good, and I'm not just saying this, we've had professionals come to some of the shows here before and tell our director how good it was! The show is the wedding singer and I'm having a BLAST! Everyone is so nice and there no divide between leads and ensemble like there was at my middle school! Also I get to help with crew for the first time too! I'm doing costumes and its AWSOME!! Sorry for the long comment, I'm just REALLY EXITED AND HAPPY ABOUT BEING IN THIS SHOW!!

We do a show every two years at my school, and next year is going to be my first show! I'm on the chorus, since I've never done such a large-scale show before, but still, we've got a three day rehearsal schedule starting tomorrow, I'm so excited!!
I love my high school’s performing arts department. In middle school I only got ensemble roles which made me believe I wasn’t good enough for anything else, but the high school director saw potential in me and cast me as a supporting lead in both the fall play and spring musical last year. This year, he cast me as the princess in our fall play, and it’s the first time I have a role with a romance plot and I’m so excited! And don’t get me STARTED on our Choir teacher because dear god I would die for that woman because I love her so much. And everyone is just really nice and I love everyone so much.
