I’m surprised none of y’all noticed White’s Pearl was pink in the flashback, and that the Pearl with Pink was not our Pearl. That sent me into a spin. Blue and Yellow Pearls have their gems in the same location as their corresponding Diamonds, and the Pink Pearl seen in flashback has her pink pearl in her belly like Pink, and was undamaged. Now she is cracked and white and working for White. I was obsessed with that when these episodes came out.
Also notice that our Pearl's gem is on her forehead and appears to be white in colour? I think our Pearl was originally White's and got swapped after White took away Pink Pearl.

Rebecca Sugar did an interview recently where she said she wants to do more Steven Universe and urged fans to let Cartoon Network know they want to see more.
And it was reported shortly afterwards that she and her husband signed with a new talent agency. Hopefully that means she's got something in the work, Steven Universe or something new.

With the way they handled Steven Universe Future? I don't know man.... the filler episodes between lore, ENDLESS hiatus and rushed bad storytelling, she should leave SU alone instead. It had its glory days years back. (Not hate I love the show I just don't know what direction it could take now that Steven left the Crystal gems).

I think the way the diamonds essensse works is, blue gives emotion, yellow gives shape, white gives conscience and pink gives power and amplify the others
I think Pink is more Emotion and Empathy, which is why Era 2 without Pink lacked both
Nah.. blue gives emotion yellow gives shape pink gives calmness and white gives controll. Because of white they STAY in their normal forms and in controll.
I think the color of one's gem is defined by the quantity of each Diamond's essence used to make them. For example... green gems are mostly made of Yellow and Blue's essence; red/pink gems are mostly made of Pink's essence; gems with a lighter shade or white have White's essence in the mix... I think you get it.
@@rafaelmatos5851 yes, I totally agree, I think thats how their cortes were organized, but if you think of them as primary colors, you would need the 3 of them to make any kind of gem, and white being all colors can suply color in case one of them is missing wich is probably what happenned during era 2
The reason I said pink gives power is because the main thing that changed in from era 1 in era 2 is that the gems got a lot weaker as peridot said, she can't even shapeshift, and in future there is more of that shown with lápis, they all still function normaly they just got weaker, and gems related to pink are usually soldiers, the quartzes in general seem to come from her.

Regarding the Beach City episodes - Steven’s human side is as important as his gem side. His human life and relationships matter.
Escapism (watermelon Steven) is there to catch breath and think about the conflict actually at play. Steven taught the melons pacifism, then he taught them war. Now those parts of him are in conflict, but they had to work together.

It is very disheartening, especially this far in, to see them dismiss the importance of things just because they're excited about plot. You're right that both sides are just as crucial. Something I thought they understood by now in the show.

The "Diamond Days" Homeworld arc was supposed to be expanded fully had there been a sixth season. A lot of development work went into creating the Pebbles who in the end only had a brief appearance. There were also intentions to have more stories about the Off-Colors, including a Rhodonite origin episode.

i would've loved if all of season 6 was on homeworld and we got the same arcs but spread out more and with more time, it's a shame we didn't but I'm still very happy with what we got :[

(Spoiler free) Something to keep in mind going into the finale: Steven is really struggling with his identity in these past few episodes, being constantly called Pink or Rose instead of Steven and expected to take up her mantle and fill the gap she left on homeworld is tough. This becomes important later, I just wanted to mention it since y’all hadn’t picked up on it :)

Steven Universe on a Wednesday? Awesome. Thanks for giving us so much extra content this month. Also, to clear things up, the extraction chamber is where the Diamonds release and collect their "sweat" so that it can be used to create new gems on their colonies. The liquid that exists in the injectors come from the Diamonds. You can also see how Steven's sweat created that pebble. Also, the fact that Pink Diamond faked her shattering is the reason why Homeworld couldn't create gems as they used to, since the lack of her essence caused many gems to come out "defective," like Peridot.
So it's pinks fault peridot and the other misformed gems like the twins are created? That's another one on the list for pink being a horrible person 😂

Actually I think this and that video were already out. I'm pretty sure they release videos early for patreon members because I started watching the other one first (I don't keep track of episode numbers so didn't realize until I watched the first minute of the video) and by the time I checked the channel to see if I missed a video and went back the video wasn't unavailable, but it was private. So I think they just didn't set it to private when they uploaded and probably just unprivated this one immediately after.

Here to answer a few of your production questions to best of my back door knowledge. As far as to why there were so many "pointless" episodes in the early part of this final season, it's because the series only got cut once Rebecca Sugar put her foot down to keep the WEDDING episode. Anything before that episode was already deep into production. Those episodes existed because there was still supposed to be two more seasons that would have slowly lead us to Homeworld and White Diamond. That's why the moment the wedding occurs the story's pacing jumps from 0 to 60. The reason for the watermelon episode was due to budget cuts. They had to make a certain number of episodes but finances were now very thin and they wanted to put their focus and talent on the finale. So the best form of action was to create an episode that incorporated a lot of old/similar character designs and environments (aka the island and the watermelon people) and was very light on action. Whether or not they could have done something else and stick to that limited budget I can't say, but it makes sense why they did what they did. Hope that helps!

Can it be argued that the episode is meaningless? Sure.
Can you still find meaning it otherwise? Oh absolutely. After watching the entire series, every episode that fans consider "filler" can be as meaningful, if not, more than some of the high regarded ones.
The situation happening on the watermelon island in this particular episode was a direct result of the previous encounters Steven and the Gems had with the watermelons. There were two factions essentially birthed from these encounters. The star-wearing, pacifistic watermelons (born from the sacrifice of the original watermelon steven) and the blood-thirsty, combative watermelons (born from the Malachite battle). The discourse that Steven walks in on is very reflective of the situation he's currently dealing with but tries to brush it to the side because, ya know, it's just the watermelon stevens.
Familiar also answered why the era 2 gems don’t come out well is bc they are missing pink diamond the essence of the diamonds are sucked up and used to put into injectors but ever since pink’s “shattering” they only had 3 diamonds to work with to get their essence out of when they are in the pools and steam house.
Considering how Pink Diamond's powers surpass the powers of the three other Diamonds combined, it's no wonder most gems produced during era 2 (like Peridot) came out defective and without most of the skills a normal gem has.

It is heavily implied that Pink was off color based on the drawings in her private room. This is emphasized by the implict information we gain from looking at her court. All gems that were made by Pink or serve Pink do not fit cleanly into their roles. Pearl speaks very openly and offers guidence to Pink rather than just following her orders without question. The pebbles joke with Pink and recognise Steven as Pink when he thanks them. The Amethysts in the Kindergarden wait for out Amethyst to emerge rather leave her behind. Even Jasper continues to stay on Earth after her mission fails to fight Steven instead of going back to Homeworld. Much like how Pink was more independent and outspoken, so too are her gems, even if to a lesser degree.
While the Escapism song is sung by Stevonnie, I think it also reflects Pink Diamond's feelings when she used to be locked in the tower.
This is why I can’t completely get on the Rose hate bandwagon. Because of all of this mental and physical abuse she endured from the other diamonds.
Movie and future do a good job showing more of the other Rose....

The Watermelon Steven episode did sorta have a point; each time we see them, we see how Steven's actions (both as Steven and when he was Watermelon Steven) influenced their culture. The first time we saw the watermelon island, they had the whole arms-outstretched thing because that's how Steven defended them when they were still in Beach City; the second time (in this episode), they also had the more aggressive stance because in the first watermelon island episode, that's how Watermelon Steven encouraged the pacifist watermelons to fend for themselves against Malachite; and finally, in this episode Watermelon Steven comes back one more time to bring the opposing factions back together through the raft he needs built

This is a theory cus it wasn’t confirmed at all.
The Gem Race was created by a waring race. There is nobody reall left to fight but since Gems by default behave like computer programs, they just keep on doing what their creators instilled in them n then we got the events of the show. Probably also why the gems normally find organic lifeforms lower than themselves. Their creators were probably organic, died and faded away never to be remembered. They were detestable since the gems were left behind with no other purpose than to continue doing what they were programmed to do.
so they are kind of like Von Neumann universal constructors, although more stratified and specialised.

A lot of people miss this, but in the flashback episode about Buddy Buddwick (in S4), where Rose was shown to have multiple lions, we actually do see the pink legs sticking out of the ground like pyramids.

33:17 I think (and some people may agree) that the 'filler' episodes are important in their own way. To parrot Garnet, there's never been anything or anyone like Steven. He's half gem AND half human. Ever since he came into his powers, other characters, his family, and the audience begin to view him as a gem. But in doing so, some people tend to stop viewing him as a human and as a kid. I think that those Beach City episodes are moments to showcase his humanity. Steven's story as a whole - the overarching lesson - is that he is BOTH

When Escapism was first leaked as an episode title, as well as the lyrics of the song in it, I remember there being a TON of theories that it was either gonna be a Lapis song, or a Pearl flashback song. We knew from the Season 5 trailer, that Lapis would leave the cast for awhile for fear of another war, so Escapism was theorized to be about her wanting off the planet, and not wanting to go through another war. Ultimately, she got Distant Shore as her own song!
Pearl was the second suspect, because with all the lore we knew would drop about her relationship with “Rose”, Escapism’s lyrics seemed to allude to Pearl’s desire for freedom, and getting away from Homeworld objectifying her as just being a servant or property.
Stevonnie was, honestly, a curveball. I don’t think many-or at least I didn’t think-Connie would join the Crystal Gems on their final stand against HomeWorld, but it was a welcome surprise.
My heart breaks for Steven in the Escapism episode, thankfully he’s got Connie to support him, but the situation he was in was horrifying. On a rewatch of the episode, the chorus of the song reaching its end as Steven’s watermelon body falls apart is so sad. Thankfully he had the sense to simply write “NEED HELP”, cuz if he didn’t get that message out, the alternative was likely starving to death in that cell with Connie, miles away from home and his loved ones. Lion can’t warp to Homeworld (only as far as the moonbase), and Lars and the Off-Colors had their hands full with Emerald’s forces chasing them down. Steven just had to put his hopes in this last prayer that he could get help. Greg and Bismuth’s smiles-as his consciousness fades-are them trying to be strong for him, to give him some peace of mind that they’ll save our team, cuz once his vision fades, that Watermelon Steven’s probably out of time too, and they just have to trust that Steven and the others will be okay...I swear, Greg never gets a break as a father

I read this theory that pink was actually suppose to be red diamond and not off color pink but was overcooked and thats why all the other diamonds don't take her as seriously cause shes the runt kinda like amethyst. And the sheer amount of resources it takes to make a diamond is to much to just make another one is why she is around tho she is still a diamond that holds her higher above regular gems but not equal to diamonds cause of that.

23:25 Rebecca Sugar doesn't do normal "filler" even her "filler" means something, sometimes you need to look a little deeper. The watermelon Steven episode is about a peaceful tribe vs a Battle tribe and both idea came from the same person, Steven. You see them Ignore our steven over and over again in favor of fighting and arguing against each other and thus nothing gets done, they actively get in his way and our Steven suffers for it even though he wants nothing to do with it. By the end the two members of these tribes finally see our Steven suffering and band together and actually help him build his raft and get him going. Once the rest of the tribes see them they help too and they forget all about what they were fighting for because they finally had one singular goal together and they felt really good by the end having helped someone instead of fighting someone and the leaders seeing how everyone else feels go along with it realizing thier people are happier for it. Does any of this sound familiar to you in anyway?
For me it explained the core problem at the heart of what's wrong the Diamonds and thier relationships to each other and how they view the universe in a very simple and clear way with the watermelon Stevens as stand ins. This episode does feel a little out of place to be fair but that was on purpose, it was to tear us away from the bigness and the stakes of Homeworld and it allowed us to see the truth of the situation in a smaller and easier to understand way and with a setting and characters that we knew but are also so very different from Stevens current situation. I love this episode so much for its storytelling because they don't speak a word and yet they tell the whole story about why shit is fucked on homeworld. It makes my respect for Rebecca Sugar grow even more ♥

Finally seeing white Diamond after so long was awesome she’s even bigger than yellow and blue. Seeing the un corrupted version of centi was great. Pink diamonds ship being a set of legs was a theory that was so funny to think about but it made sense since blue and yellow have left and right arms as their ships so white has the torso and head. This also revealed pink diamond has an original Pearl pink Pearl but was taken by white diamond who was replaced by our Pearl. I loved seeing Steven in pink diamonds outfit and being able to see more of Homeworld was so cool and the other new gems that showed up.

I get your frustrations with the filler episodes, but I think most of them serve to set something that's gonna happen later, like in Letters to Lars they introduced Ronaldo being on watch duty for aliens which later develops in him finding Lapis and everything that happens in the moon, and Pearl having a phone which sets the details for A single pale Rose.
Also you probably already know this, but it was the main series that got rushed, at the time Rebecca didn't know they would get the movie and future iirc
Also at the time, a lot of the fandom didn't liked the penultimate episode either, and the song Escapism (which is lovely) left a lot of us a bit disappointed because Rebecca sang it way before the episode released and they were a lot of speculation about who character sing it, a lot believing it to be a Lapis' song since it did fit her arch.
i love Escapism as a breather before the big finale, specially with that great song
curious fact, gems absorb energy from the sun through their stones, so the fact that diamonds placed the pink in a dark tower would be the equivalent of leaving it malnourished or hungry, we don't know how long it stayed there, but it is something to think about.

The watermelons were taking part in both ways of dealing with things. the star ones are doing what baby watermelon did in the original chapter they were given life, even the arms open and eyes closed part. the others were doing as steven teached them when they went against malachite

I was gonna comment on how much I'm dissappointed with H-man now (and why), but rage comments never lead to good places. + I'm literally a random viewer, so instead I decided to focus on more interesting things. I just love how layered this arc of episodes is. Throughout these 4 episodes it is heavily implied that both Yellow and Blue heavily abused Pink. We mostly see that in their interactions with Steven, who they think is Pink. They constantly belittle him, don't take him seriously, ignore his opinions and desires and make him question himself by manipulating him. And at the end we see hints of physical abuse as well. In "Familiar" Steven sings of how the feelings and the overall dynamic he experiences is familiar to him. He sees in it a parallel to how the crystal gems used to underestimate him, just like the Diamonds underestimate Pink. There r even paralels between each diamond and a respective Crystal Gem at the beginning of s1. But that is a false paralel. The Crystal Gems never abused Steven, though they weren't always the best parent figures. I think the ending of "Together alone" is when Steven understands that. The real reason this all feels familiar is because Steven's whole life he was expected to fill the role of his mother, and now the diamonds literally treat him like he is her. He's living through his worst nightmare, which reminds him of the time he was weak. And that's why all those human episodes are VERY important. Every single part of the main story has been Steven's mom's legacy. While his interactions with the citizens of Beach City is distinctly his own. They r needed exactly because they're unneeded. Same with the entire concept of Watermelon Island.
I'm surprised you guys didn't notice that the Pearl in the flashback was the original Pink Pearl who became White's Pearl. You can even see her gem on her belly just like Pink Diamond. I don't understand how they didn't have any reactions to that entire sequence.
These episodes feel so much like being trans/gay in an unaccepting family. Not calling you by your name, insisting you look a certain way, not letting your friend/partner come over or be openly gay with them.
I can say Future wrapped up Steven universe in all it's completeness there's a lot of things that they couldn't just complete with this season they fought for the marriage and got these mini arc to wrap up, so they showed all they wanted and they could and you also need to consider the budget like the production for the big 44 minutes final episode 😭 it's fine enjoy the ride

The issue with those beach city episodes were that they were written before the show got cancelled :( so the crew didn’t know how little time they had

- “Escapism” plot is similar to The Red Turtle where both stories are without dialogue, a person tries to escape a tropical island on a raft, & gets attacked by a large sea creature which the Watermelon Shark attack is a reference to Jaws
- The Watermelons are somewhat based on Dr. Seuss’ “The Sneetches” where a tribe that has stars discriminates against the tribe that does not have them & vice versa
- Stevonnie's attempt to escape the prison through a narrow window then fall is a reference to Castle in the Sky when Pazu's doing the same thing
End of season 5 is going to be so hype
Every single episode was extremely important and extremely necessary. There is NO filler. Just facts. Let's stop with this tired and fallacious idea.
in case it wasn't clear, the new warring watermelon faction emerged after Steven rallied the watermelons to help during the malachite fight.
Escapism definitely felt weird. The pacing of season 5 felt weird. Not gonna deny it. I felt the same way on first watch.
But I think Familiar the song perfectly captures the series, how it’s FIRST a show about relationships, family, identity (and queerness), and healing: the whole song Steven sings about recognizing the similarities to him helping the Crystal Gems and the Diamonds, and the last line of the song is like a humorous tacked on afterthought “and stop their spread of terror across space.”
It’s easy to get hyped and get excited by the grand gem space war, but it’s at the heart a metaphor for toxic and/or broken families and the expectations that hurt them. That’s what the Diamonds represent. The space war is all background, the setting for a big family allegory.
And the townie characters ARE important to the plot. You can love it or hate it, find it a silly choice or whatever, but it’s undeniable that the show values the human characters equally to the gem space war side, because it values both Steven’s human and gem side. It may feel weird especially in season 5, but the humans needed their arcs to complete, and Steven needed to have those important connections to the humans.
From a critical standpoint I can absolutely agree from a textbook storytelling perspective that episodes were pointless and coulda been cut, but they needed to pace things in a specific way without losing the heart of the series being gems AND humans, and family.
Tldr; critiques on pacing and human episodes are totally valid, but it’s an intentional thematic choice the series makes, so for me as a fan of the show, i respect it for its theming and what it all means. I love steven universe so i love it’s…unconventional storytelling choices in favor of its messages. But its totally fair to look at it from different perspectives and be critical of it.
theres a video essay i think fantastically examines the white diamond and final homeworld arc and made me rethink all my criticisms of it in favor of honoring the shows core themes. Its called The Most Interesting Scene in Steven Universe by James Woodall. Highly recommend this analysis of the finale and final homeworld arc

If you guys played the game 'raft' and reviewed it id watch. Youre basically on a raft at the end of the world and you have to find trash to make your raft a bigger raft then you get to a point where you find mini islands with seeds and items so you grow plants and make a desalinator but you have to fend off sharks that eat your post apocalyptic trash boat. At some point you find floating abandoned government areas and find out how earth ended. It was made by guys doing a college project and they just made it better afterwards

I never thought about it until now, but i think the sweat that yellow makes is probably used to power the distablizers, they are pretty much a weaker version of her power
(SPOILERS FOR STEVEN UNIVERSE FUTURE IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT) It was shown that the diamond essence can be used to repair broken gems. That's probably what they mainly use it for.
Rebecca Sugar has confirmed that the Diamonds' "sweat" is a very important part in creating new Gems. It's put inside the injectors.
