The network was AGAINST Garnet's wedding and told Rebecca that if they let her do this, EVERY show will want a gay wedding, and Rebecca said, "What's wrong with that?". Rebecca went through with this, and Cartoon Network ended support and gave them the remainder of the season and the movie.

No, they just cancelled it. Then after the kickback, they gave her six episodes to finish the season and do a shitload of the next one. It wasn't until AFTER the six episodes were done and had made WAY more money than they'd expected that they requested a movie, with the epilogue series being something for the movie to promote.
This is before the LGBTQ became a thing Fr and if this episode air today it wouldn’t get any backlash which pisses me off 😔
The real reason they put ruby in a dress and sapphire in a suit is because of censorship.
In many countries, Ruby’s gender was changed to male, so Rebecca Sugar countered that bu putting Sapphire in the suit and Ruby in the dress

when i first watched it, id always thought of it as traditionally. like. ruby being the guy and sapphire being the girl (because i didnt know wearing dresses didnt actually equal to being female)
and then the wedding and i realized 'ohhh. you can DO THAT?' in response to sapphire being in a suit and vice versa? and then idk i always figured sapphire mightve been the guy and that all sapphires wore dresses in their form thing
and id never known same-sex relationships were a thing.
and now in hindsight being aware of this stuff i feel kind of dumb not realizing that it was less about the 'tHEY ARENT weARING WHAt THEY're SuppoSEd to' and more 'THEYRE BOTH GIRLS' or as much of a girl you can be as an alien who probably doesnt know about gender stuff.

Also because Rebecca Sugar has stated many times Ruby and Sapphire also represent her relationship with their husband, where she is like Ruby and he is like Sapphire, so it matches their wedding too.
The wedding was absolutely what got the show cancelled. Especially since Rebecca insisted on putting Ruby in a wedding dress, because in other countries they had been censoring Ruby and Sapphire's relationship by saying that Ruby was a boy. I'm so glad that Rebecca fought hard to keep Ruby and Sapphire's wedding in the show 🥰
@@Hall003 Its a win in terms of fighting for better queer representation. Did it harm Steven Universe? Sure, the studio predictably retaliated. But if the crew hadnt insisted on this then we might not have gotten more explicitly gay shows like The Owl House or She Ra in future. So for us gays it's a win, just one with casualties.
Sometimes it's worth compromising on the breadth of your vision to do right by people. It's a W move as far as I'm concerned. Blame the networks for being fake about supporting representation, only doing so in places where it will make them money, and in all others bowing soullessly to the winds of bigotry. Their morals are infinitely flexible, which means they hold no principles.

the show didn't became a joke because of the ending, theres several other very famous shows with similar rushed endings, it became a joke due to the massive bad faith criticism it received during 2017-2019 by content creators like ER;, Lily Orchid and such
all those videos have millions and millions of views, and that's mostly what popularized hating on SU because it was trendy to clown on "SJWs" and "Woke" media

of course, it's a work of art and you can interpret it as badly as you want but the artist is not responsible for your least charitable interpretations
I don't know where that came from that they were "100% redeemed" but that's obviously not true, just look at any interaction Steven has with them during the final episodes, it's more akin to family members who he doesn't like very much.

it would make no sense to shatter them or imprison them, because who would fix all their mistakes then?
in the SU movie and SU Future, we see that they're tasked to try to fix all the millennia of damage they did, with Yellow repairing shattered gems, Blue lending emotional help to the gems and White doing.... something. not sure what but she's at least helping.

@@Hall003 It may have damaged Steven Universe, but it was a huge milestone for representation in cartoons. It took the hit to it's own story in order to set a precedent for future shows. It may have been a loss for Steven Universe's ability to tell the story in the way they wanted, but it was a Win for showing representation in cartoons.
@@bnuuuyy Hiding in Private praises the show a bit too much and kinda glosses over the flaws of the show or tries to argue they aren't flaws with bad arguments. Sarcastic Chorus and Bacxaber have better analysis videos about SU that are nuanced and fair to the show, pointing out positives and negatives. You should watch those instead.

Yes, according to Rebecca Sugar (creator of the show), the wedding was exactly what got SU canceled, more specifically the onscreen kiss on the lips. Here's the full story without spoilers:
So Sugar knew CN wouldn't greenlight this episode, which is why she meticulously planned it so that they CAN'T reject the episode. It's got a musical number, character development, lapis comes back, the diamonds show up, a big fight happens, and a new understanding is achieved with the main villains of the story. The wedding and therefore the kiss is absolutely ESSENTIAL to the plot, so how will they say no? This worked actually, so CN was like "okay you got me, I gotta approve this. Oh, by the way, this is your last season"
This obviously threw a wrench in SU's production, making Sugar have to fit a whole Season 6 worth of content into the rest of Season 5 which was like 5 episodes. Meanwhile one of her associates kept trying to plead with the higher-ups, trying to get something more. Eventually she went "what about a movie" which worked actually. Cn agreed to a movie, but then they went "but there's no point in having a movie unless it's to promote more show" so they gave them a movie AND 20 more episodes after the movie, which was great, but by the time this decision was approved, production on the next 5 episodes went too far to scrap, which not only meant all of S6 was condensed into 5 episodes, but all of S7 was condensed in 20 episodes and a movie. You might notice the pacing gets a little fast from here on out, this is why.
The executive meddling in Steven Universe and The Owl House is irksome. There was also meddling in Gravity Falls (The Love God episode).
Imagine killing a show because you want rocks to kiss. SU couldn't of had more prequel seasons or more episodes talking about corrupted gems. But it's not my show it's RS's and she killed it (meaning two things)

I'll never forgive CN for how they made the season and ending get rushed. This show deserved better
Well look at it this way we now have an independent studio here growing on TH-cam that are making their own animation and they have the freedom to do whatever they want they might have been inspired by these shows being canceled to fight for animation so in reality we didn't lose we won with how far these independent animations studios are doing. Like for example helluva boss with its gay representation and bi rep. Murder drones with it having a different animation style and horror elements. Lackadaisy, hazbin hotel being pick up by a studio and given their freedom to do whatever they wanted to do the creator of that wanted ppl who can sing their roles and that's why they changed a majority of the voices but it's still a big success to have a fight against animation only being for kids this proves that we can still have a good animationed story for just adults.
It was and wasnt CNs fault for the show being rushed. They wanted to support the wedding episode but warned that they would lose funding from international if they went through with it. They decided to do it anyway and as warned lost funding which caused the show to be cut short
As the person above me said, the show got rushed because its funding got cut. Steven Universe survived based on its international funding. Rebecca basically giving bigoted countries the middle finger (as she should) meant that those countries would respond in kind and cut the funding that they were giving CN. Rebecca worked closely with CN on this and said that the network was supportive of her decision, and she understood the outcome of what the wedding episode would do. If you want to be angry at something, be angry that the world was incredibly bigoted (more than now) back when SU was airing. However, on a more positive note, SU walked and stumbled a bit plot-wise so that other shows like She-Ra could run. This episode was monumental for showing LGBTQ+ relationships in cartoons being more normalized.

Literally more than half the countries that CN gets broadcasted too don't support the lgbt community. They are very strict countries with rules and highly religious. Making characters gay in kids cartoon will definitely trigger international viewers (leaders of countries).

I've waited so long for you to get to this moment. "Reunited" is just so beautiful. Ruby and Saphire will forever be cemented as one of if not the first, not just implied, but official lgbt+ couple in a children's animated series. Of course, this episode was banned in some countries, and it's a shame CN made Rebecca and her team rap up the show 20 episodes early after this, but it's a great mark of progress and a great episode.

Why do the diamonds appear right on the wedding day, right in that place?
Ruby and Saphiro could have spent more time apart and ended the season with the wedding, but no, Rebeca wanted the wedding right now because queer "representation" is important.
The four Diamonds and Steven can both represent the five stages of grieving: White Diamond represents denial (her inability to acknowledge change and that Pink was really gone), Yellow Diamond represents anger (which she directed towards Earth to avoid the guilt she was feeling), Blue Diamond represents depression (seen how sad she got after losing Pink Diamond and longing for her), Pink Diamond represents bargaining (seen how she firstly begged the other Diamonds for a colony and then how she begged them to stop the colonization of Earth) and Steven represents acceptance (literally all the show is an example of it).
Interesting how they are also in order by "hierarchy" or "age".

Putting Ruby in a dress and making the wedding central to the plot so it couldn't be cut was Rebecca Sugar's big middle finger to censors ❤️ some other languages used "he/him" pronouns for Ruby, and cut many wlw scenes when airing the episodes, such as Pearl's dance with Rose. Rebecca went to bat for queer representation and I love her so much for it. 😭

Just for you know... Rebecca Sugar and Matt Braly (the creators of "Steven Universe" and "Amphibia" respectivelly) are working together to make a movie for Sony. Man, can you imagine the masterpiece that is going to come up from that partnership? Both creators are masters in plot twists, character development, storytelling... not to mention how their shows have so much inclusion and variety. I would run to a movie theater to watch as soon it would come up. But I wouldn't mind to have Dana to join them, just to give a tinge of horror to the story.

SU's had tinges of horror, particularly in the early seasons (see also Sadie and the Killers). I've always wondered if CN asked them to tone down the horror.

Rebecca Sugar was heavily involved with Adventure Time before she made Steven Universe. She was a writer, storyboard artist and wrote a lot of the songs for Adventure Time.
Ruby in the dress and Sapphire in the tux has to be one of the most thoughtful decisions the writers ever made. I'm certain I'm not alone in subconsciously thinking beforehand it would be reversed. This shows there is no obvious masc or fem one for some relationships. Brilliant.

They realized people ain't got 20 dollars a month to waste on watching them watch movies. People would rather wait and watch things for free on youtube. Sure, you will wait a week, but it's free, doesn't cost anything. The only reason they are showing is because it's the season. Once it's over, they go back to normal. They need 200 dollar a year per person, apparently. I'm guessing they are getting paid a few hundred thousand dollars a year. Maybe 200k to 500k that gets split up between a whole team of people. Which I find odd since youtuber meant one person back in the day. Just a person making home videos, not a team of people in an office space making high-quality videos. Basically, setting the youtuber bar so high, normal, simple youtubers get pushed into the shadows being left in the cold. If I knew being a youtuber meant buying friends and family to help me make videos, I would have hired my classmates and old friends a long time ago.

As a huge fan of Garnet since the show started, these episodes are some of my favorites, one of the things i loved about her was her relationship, Ruby and Sapphire are such an amazing couple and i’m glad they got to get married 😭❤️

Don't know if you guys will see this before or after you see the whole show, but Peridot is the youngest Crystal Gem. She's younger than Steven, confirmed by Rebecca Sugar herself to be less than 4 years old when we first met her.

Ruby and sapphire getting married became a huge historical moment in cartoon network/animation history. Because of ruby and sapphire, it's the reason why other animated shows that came out later on started to have more lgbtq characters, and it makes me so happy 🥺

But yea, a part of the SU fandon freaking sucks because some certain people are just too obsessed and crazy. Another example is that they also sent death threats to a member of the crewniverse, let me repeat that. They sent death threats to someone who worked on the freaking show!! And the reason why is because the person shipped amethyst and peridot and oh boy, some certain lapis x peridot shipper were so triggered. It got so bad that the person had to delete their twitter. And now we have the huge pearl fans who started to attack you all because you didn't like pearl. Like i didn't liked pearl either when the show was new and just like so many i started to love her and her development, and i also found it fun in seeing you guys have opinions about her and slowly learning more about her. But geez, those pearl fans really shouldn't went that far. So as someone who loves pearl, i do deeply apologize that you guys had to thru to these people's BS. Not all pearl fans are the same, just some of them.

could be misremembering but im pretty sure rebecca sugar did a lot more writing for adventure time than just one episode, she was involved until like season 6 as an assistant writer im believe. i know that she wrote a good chunk of the songs in adventure time's early seasons too. she came back for a few episodes to guest voice a character that sings a song she wrote a few seasons after she had left to work on steven universe. i think she also sings a song thats in the new fiona and cake mini series

So yeah. This is what caused the rushed ending. Thing is, Reunited blew through the ratings when it came out so in a sense, it opened up the door for other cartoons to have similar relationships as well (which is very bittersweet that it took that combo of success and the cancellation to work). I chalk that up as a win that it opened the floodgates (flood-gay-tes?) though.

Especially during the time of the show being on air, the SU community was much more insufferable. Like the loud ones were REALLY loud, fortunately these days while they are still around, they're nott as annoying anymore
Rebecca Sugar is also in adventure time, all the marveling songs was written by Rebecca sugar bro, and when she eventually left the team as it came it an ending, she wrote a song called time adventure, it's God teir good! It's soooooo darn good, you guys gotta react to it after you finish all the seasons and the ending!
I heard the creator fought really hard for the wedding Cartoon Network warned her OTHER COUNTRIES would stop supporting her show. She did it anyway.

Reunited is to me, the best episode of the entire series, the introductory song, the wedding and of course the battle against blue diamond, by far the best one of the series

I get why people didnt like pearl, i personally loved her and loved her even more when everything came to light, and it recontextualized the whole show and on re watch its rly cool to see all the hints, and drops of her specifically avoiding certain words because she was forced too, one instance she says when i still served.... (looks to the side and pauses) Homeworld.... and other parts that were neat to see on re watch

If you think about it, before joining the Crystal Gems Ruby was just a soldier following orders and after accidentally fusing with Sapphire they were almost non-stop Garnet, so Ruby wanting some freedom makes sense, and after that she decides that she wants to be with Sapphire on her own instead of it being Rose's or someone else's decision, especially now that their relationship no longer represent something bigger than them in their eyes. Yes, they were in love, but it was still important for her it being their choice to be with Sapphire.
You have INDEED discovered the episode/reason why Cartoon Network originally cancelled Steven Universe: Reunited AKA the Wedding.
BUT, thanks to the INCREDIBLY STRONG AND LOUD AF support of the fans, Cartoon Network would let Rebecca Sugar make a movie AND the Steven Universe Future series afterwards.
On the topic of extremities in communities, I don't understand it. If a creator said something about a show I incredibly harshly disagreed with, the end result would be me just not engaging with their stuff at all and harshly stating my dislike of them as a content creator if spoken about. I wouldn't waste my time messaging anyone directly about it.
If it was milder and I just felt like someone had missed a point/theme, I would mention that and leave it there. With those things especially it can also be somewhat up to interpretation of characters, and that's completely fine.

I've been waiting to see you guys experience the wedding, glad to see it was worth the wait lol and yeah that wedding was what got the show canned, basically they had to wrap up everything in a hurry since they had to beg to get the rest of the episodes, and weren't told they were getting the movie or future at all until after the fact, hell I don't think they even knew they were getting future until even the movie was finished finished

I love to see a group of men talk about why yellow diamond acts the way she does. Very refreshing to see such thought put into an "angry" "female" character.
Reunited was an awesome episode the way we got the first lesbian wedding in an animated show but unfortunately doing that got the show canceled but it’s okay I liked how the original series finished off even if the finale is a little flawed in some aspects. Seeing what the cluster at least a part of it looks like was really cool, lapis’s return was great, having the diamonds fully fight was great, and it was nice having bismuth return.
The funniest part of Ruby shouting Independence is that episode first aired on July 4th
Ruby and Sapphire's kiss was a bold move and one of the first homosexual kisses in a kid show to be made in that time, adventure time has one too which was also Rebecca Sugar's major contribution .

I completely agree with what you said at the end, I may disagree with some of your opinions or get geniuenly frustrated at times because I've grown to love this characters so much but it should never go past that. Its a show we all love and becoming that toxic fan is the opposite of what the show is literally about

I really do love Steven universe and I’m so happy I found this channel before 2023 ended because this channel is awesome. I was also gonna recommend gravity falls but y’all were 2 years ahead of me 😂😭. I’m a huge falls fan too. I watch it back every summer. Had a huge roll when I was a kid. I’m 20 now or soon to be 🥹

It was and wasnt CNs fault for the show being rushed. They wanted to support the wedding episode but warned that they would lose funding from international if they went through with it. They decided to do it anyway and as warned lost funding which caused the show to be cut short
