It’s probably because hot cars are probably paid to promote crossover SUV’s. You can see that when they complain that it’s “excessive” and that makes it a terrible car. I didn’t hear any complaints about maintenance or reliability, just that it’s too big. When I bought my Forte, the salesman was saying how they can’t keep the Telluride in stock, it was such a hot sell.

Kia are great vehicles, I have owned them for many years, first had a 2008 Rio for five years, went from FL to Mexico twice and from FL to Dallas twice and in 100 thousand miles never had a single problem, only oil and filter changes, traded it for a 2012 Spectra hatchback and went from FL to Dentro, OH twice with it, no problems at all, had it for four years and after 80 thousand miles traded for a 2015 Sportage which never had any issues at all. Now I own a 2018 Sportage with 21K Miles and hope to keep it long times.
Are Kia vehicles the best in the market? No, they are not but they are reliable, they run well, they do not brake easily and even if they do, the company offer a very good warranty for 100K miles on engine and transmission plus 60K miles bumper to bumper.
Which american or japanese made car offer that?

Glad you've had a great experience with the brand. I'm a longtime Honda owner, but the parking brake button kills me everytime. I typically drive a 5 speed, so a mechanical hand brake is a deal breaker. The Kia Rio looks enticing enough, so I may plan on getting a 2023 spec'ed out to my liking. Any thoughts or small concerns you have had with you rio years ago is appreciated.
P.S. do they really honor their warranty well enough? I know it's enticing. I've always owned pre-owned so I never went to dealership except for Honda fluid & small parts. Thanks.

I can lift the floorboards and fit my swim gear. Survival backpack and a large first aid kit. Honestly, if it were 4wd I would do a small lift and make it an awesome bug out vehicle. The Kia Soul should not be on this list. It is incredibly versatile. It is the Marcus Allen of cars. It can block, run, catch, and pass. It has over 62 cubic feet of cargo room which is more than any other hatchback. It's a winner. It will probably go down as their biggest seller in history. You can camp in it. It's great to take on long road trips and save on motels. It also comes with a bullet proof manual transmission. This is Kia's best vehicle ever.

I've had Kias for over 10 years - Sportage, Sedona, Optima and Sorento. No major problems. The 2011 Sedona and 2019 Optima did have door lock motor problems. If it happens during the warranty period you are covered. If not, it will cost you at least $200 to replace the door lock motor.

I own a 2010 Kia Soul ! and have driven it only 61000 miles but I love it because it is easy to get in and out of. It has great comfortable rear seats. I have had no problems with this vehicle and plan to keep it. Lots of seniors like this vehicle. Actually love the funky design! I know newer ones have better transmissions and are quieter but this was a great deal.

Here’s my take, I have been looking at KIA for a while. I like the Telluride but can’t seem to find anything directly related to the average driver who has owned one. They’ve always had a bad reputation and I can’t seem to get past that. I don’t care about getting to 60 MPH in 3 seconds, I care about overall quality of the car in the 3 to 5 year ownership category. They have some nice looking vehicles and I am tempted, but I always do a lot of research into vehicles before going to the showroom. I appreciate your input and reviews but I need some additional info.

A confusing list. I would prefer working from worst up. He goes forward to the worst then in the middle from the best down. Best is the Stinger? Only for people interested in that type of sporty sedan. Also it was surprising to see the Telluride in the worst section, and why? Based on somebody’s opinion that it is over the top? First time I heard that.

Except for the 2.4's catching fire, everyone of these is better than US built cars. I started with a Rio, loved it, had I not cheaped out and had cruise control I wouldn't have traded it for an Optima, which I traded for a Hyundai Tucson. Traded our Soul for a Sportage. And I wasn't aware of the 2.4 and 2.0 problem of catching fire. I don't have any other issues as I only use Hyundai oil filters and always use a full synthetic 10w30 or 5w30 oil. That 5w20 is for fuel economy, and not for summer time weather, after they put 5w20 in my Sportage under my free oil changes (warranty purposes), I change that out for 10w30.

I didn't hear you talk about the celtos. And I don't know why you ditched on the Kia soul. It is the one boxy car that I like the best out of all the boxy cars. I can't stand the Nissan cube or the XB Scion or any other boxy car available. You can't rate these cars based on looks alone. You need to do some research on the long-term durability of these cars as well. Unfortunately the Kia celtosis had some issues with their two liter engines if you don't keep their oils clean they have a tendency to burn oil and then crack Pistons and need to change the whole engine. But the original 1.6 l engine in the Kia soul has been extremely reliable over the last ten to twelve years. It has great headroom roomy back seat a small trunk but folds down into a large cargo area; if you're not using the back seat. About 25 to 30 miles to the gallon which is quite good it handles fairly well it rides fairly well it does everything fairly well the only thing sometimes it's a little harsh on the bumps. The Kia soul is the best built Kia they make. For the Long haul.

It's a challenging exercise, given that Kia only has 13 current offerings in the US. So there are going to be some models in the middle which you could maybe argue for making *either* list. My attempt....
    Worst:
    1. Sedona
    2. Rio
    3. Niro
    4. K900
    5. Forte
These all offer fairly good value. I just think you can get just a bit more bang for the buck elsewhere. I like the Sedona, just not as much as the Sienna, for example. And the new 120 HP engine in the Rio is a bit underpowered relative to the 147 MPI Atkinson cycle engine which is now standard in the Forte & Soul (as well as the Hyundai Kona and Veloster).
    Best:
    1. Telluride
    2. Soul
    3. Stinger
    4. Optima
    5. Seltos
The new Telluride and Seltos and the redisigned Soul have gotten strong reviews, and a redesigned Optima is also coming in the fall. Could have considered the Sorento, Candenza, or Sportage as well, all CR recommended models. The Forte and Sedona are also recommended, and I still included them all on my *worst* list. It's just a very competitive group.

I've mentioned before, but the black plastic buttons used in Kia and Hyundai products tend to fade and the letter will get smudged overtime, and they don't last as long as Japanese models, plus their prices are creeping up through the years so I'm not a fan of the Korean vehicles anymore ....

    • @Okoro17

There are plenty of examples on forums and TH-cam videos that will show Kia vehicles with 200,000 to 400,000 miles on the original engine and transmission. They do last as long as the Japanese as long as they are cared for via basic maintenance.

This is why you don't let journalists make rankings. Kia rio/hyundai accent are the cheapest new cars worth looking at with a 10 year warranty to boot. Easily had under 15 grand otd so you know at most you're paying $1500/yr of ownership and realistically probably more like $1000 which for a new car is pretty damn good
Soul is like a grand more for more practicality, almost 80 inches of legroom, bigger engine, and it's made in korea which is avoids a lot of kia quality issues. Solid upgrade if you can get over the looks which I'd call utilitarian. Boxy is practical
For the k900/cadenza literally who cares in the luxury car segment how well you can throw it around corners as long as it's fine for normal driving. Literally just stating the drawbacks you expect when you're looking in the segment
Telluride review is the worst though. Basically "It's not meant for people who wouldn't buy it for it's intended purpose". Seriously what? Powertrain is entirely adequate for the segment and the value for the interior quality sells it just like the k900/cadenza
Not even a kia fanboy. Avalon/highlander are probably better options over the cadenza/telluride. I'd also get a minivan over a three row suv. The reasoning is so dumb though
