2 small details I can pick out that I absolutely love in an amazing game would be that gear changes look as you upgrade it, and the different animation styles used for each of the end chapter scenes. So beautifully done all of them
Dragonball was heavily inspired by the novel Journey to the west, which tells the story of Sun Wukong, Saiyens transforming into monkeys, Son Goku having a tail when he was a young boy etc etc
It’s been 3 weeks, 5 days, and 17 hrs since I last felt sleep. The voices in my head tell me sweet nothings. The shadows look at me with awe. The still air fills me with solemnity. And yet, here I am. For another Joe video.
For almost all the main bosses, if you go through the hidden optional area, you will get vessels (4 of them in total), which will help you immensely in boss c ombat. For the Rat, you can go and get the wind tamer which will give you Damage Reduction and immunity to Strong Winds so you won't be affected by the Sand Tornado in the 3rd phase. For the Centipede, if you use the weaver's needle at the right time, you can skip the whole stamina reduction phase. To understand the watermelon scene you have to know the original story which a little digging will help.
You also get the fire piece mantle in the first chapter after defeating the greedy monk in the secret area, that helps you immensely against the chapter 1's final boss
I believe the game was funded in part by the ccp, especially after covid whenever the chinese economy wasnt doing the best. It wasnt a small amount of money either, also alot of western players love the game just not the goverment who help fund it
I love how everyone got to experience the lore of the OG monkey king. Everyone loves goku, wukong deserves some of that love too! I recommend the lore explanation videos frome AvenueX, hours of lore.
Just finished watching the video. I 100% agree on the 9/10 (that was my own rating) and I think you were very on point with all of your criticisms that keep this from being a 10/10. I am equally looking forward to what these developers do next. Definitely a GOTY contender (if not winner) in my opinion!
Yeah at least it didn't reuse bosses like Elden Ring or give you no direction or have only one NPC put a mark on your map the entire game, or make armor useless or have 100's of weapons and most of them garbage, I could go on. ER gets too many passes just because it's a "mer Fromsoft" game it's 7/10 unlike this.
@@The1stDuhZeezIt does reuse several bosses with different color palettes or elemental-themed moves. some ppl complained about it, but its a dumb thing to complain about in Black Myth Wukong and its dumb thing to complain about in Elden Ring, which has 2-3x the number of unique bosses (counted once) and unique enemy types as any other FromSoft game, who are very ahead of the curve on enemy variety, and which Black Myth Wukong roughly matches, but in a much smaller & more linear game space.
@@mediumvillain What are you talking about ? "Elden Ring has 2-3x the number of unique bosses" ??? Compared to the unique bosses in Black Myth, Elden Ring is just a copy-paste, recycle, and lazy reused models sticking together everywhere...There are only 40+ actually unique bosses max...While BMW has like 80+
Just to be clear, I think Elden Ring is a 10/10, and I place Baldur’s Gate 3 at 10/10 as well. Those games are not without flaws, but their strengths far outweigh and hold up the rest to reach 10/10 status. Wukong has 10/10 potential but just has a bit too much invisible wall issues and a significant number of bosses are difficult because of hit box issues rather than fighting mechanics.
@@mediumvillain I was referring to Elden Ring and it's only a "dumb thing" for get gud chodes, it's lazy and needs to be called out it was overdone in Elden Ring a solid 7/10 game.
the story is a lot less confusing when you learn about journey to the west, this game was definitely made for Chinese and Asian people who grew up with the 1986 tv show
Yeah, Joe, I know you couldn't breathe at all with that duck mask over that lion mask. Edit: Annnnnnnnd I just skipped to the end to see if there was an outtake and sure enough I was correct.
Totally agree on everything here. Perfect 9/10 game that would’ve been 10/10 had the invisible walls not been such a huge thing. The art, the lore, the expansive gameplay, the awesome bosses, the level design, everything. There was so much work put into this game. They deserve GOTY
I didn't mind the invisible walls THAT much.... I mean yeah, it was a bit annoying having such a beautiful looking open world and not being able to explore... but lets face it, we all know it would have otherwise turned into a game where we end up exploring for hours on end, and then thinking "Uuh...... what were we supposed to be doing in this game 3 hours ago?" The ONLY frustrating invisible wall I encountered was in the temple near the end of Chapter 5 after fighting in the monotone arena. I looked over a railing and noticed there was a tiny turtle chest that I hadn't opened. I tried jumping over the railing but it WOULDN'T LET ME! Had to literally walk the entire way around just to get to that freaking little chest.
One of a few games that will not tell you the Ending if you played it as a Speedrunner and I love it. No *_"Yellow Paint"_* (that will treat you like a toddler of what to do or will hand hold you to your exploration) I encountered so far in the game except the yellow sparkling lights whenever you are close to Shrines and that's fine.
Funny thing, is, Yellow Rat is the only one I use the exploit back when it was not patched yet. 🤣 Then, on New Game+, I tried to beat all of them on first try just for revenge.
On steam, I took 627 screenshots. That's not hyperbole, that's the actual number. I wanted to chronicle my journey with this game. The game is a masterpiece. Im now up to Broken Shell in NG+ and I have 82 hours. Missing 4 achievements until I get my 100%

The performance issues of the game are all over the internet, lag spikes and visual stuff, and it is what scares me away from buying it for PS5...Joe does not mention a word about that.. how do you have fun fighting difficult bosses if the game is lagging?
Honestly with the lore, artistry, and detail that went into this game. This is a pretty solid 10 out of 10 for me. The sheer amount of lore in just the enemy portraits, the beautiful artwork slabs at the end of every chapter, the subliminal life lessons, and the insane enemy and boss variety. Chapter three was probably the weakest for me but just about every other chapter I can't even think of a point in the game I was just hoping to get done with. Up there with Elden ring, the Witcher 3, Baldur's gate 3. I'm doing a new game plus run right now because I wanna make sure I platinum this game.

Even Chinese can't understand all or know all the lores, it's the hybrid of Buddhist, Taoist and Chinese demons. That baby buddha in the game is Maitreya Buddha.
I couldn't agree more about this chapter's 2 final boss! There is in fact a way to make the last third of the fight easier but it is hidden behind a side quest. Literally broke my teeth several times against this boss, went to level up and explore, completed that quest, came back: beaten him 2nd try. Same for the last boss, lost 4h trying to beat it in a fair way, without leveling up, but couldn't. Did some level up, discovered that one ability was really OP for that boss, beaten it 1st try afterwards. So for those getting stuck at any point, do not get too stubborn: explore, re-visit some areas, upgrade some abilities, and you'll be fine.
Having lived in China for about 15 years, it's good to see that the game is introducing people to a more nuanced and balanced view of this country. We only hear the bad things about China if we switch on the news in the West (and yes, we only hear about the bad things about the West if you switch on the news here) but in fact both cultures are full of rich history and nuance that really makes us feel that we aren't so different after all. You have to get the secret ending. The secret final boss fight is the single best boss fight sequence I’ve seen in games in the past 5-10 years
Erlang is kinda corny tbh, has a shield and literally has combo strings that last 20 seconds ffs, once you get his health down the A.I just starts spamming to the point the fight becomes a parody of actual good boss fights. Erlang is more of a tedious chore than anything imo, could’ve been great if they didn’t just go for “secret boss need be hard”

2 small details I can pick out that I absolutely love in an amazing game would be that gear changes look as you upgrade it, and the different animation styles used for each of the end chapter scenes. So beautifully done all of them
Took me way too long to realize that Sun Wukong has 100+ transformations which explains why there are so many transformations in DBZ and after series
Wukong has 72
Bajie has 36
Dragon Ball? No, no, no, these are not the same character, they just have the same name.

Totally agree on everything here. Perfect 9/10 game that would’ve been 10/10 had the invisible walls not been such a huge thing.
The art, the lore, the expansive gameplay, the awesome bosses, the level design, everything. There was so much work put into this game.
They deserve GOTY
I’m glad you mention the invisible walls. It’s extremely frustrating especially during a boss fight
I didn't mind the invisible walls THAT much.... I mean yeah, it was a bit annoying having such a beautiful looking open world and not being able to explore... but lets face it, we all know it would have otherwise turned into a game where we end up exploring for hours on end, and then thinking "Uuh...... what were we supposed to be doing in this game 3 hours ago?"
The ONLY frustrating invisible wall I encountered was in the temple near the end of Chapter 5 after fighting in the monotone arena. I looked over a railing and noticed there was a tiny turtle chest that I hadn't opened. I tried jumping over the railing but it WOULDN'T LET ME! Had to literally walk the entire way around just to get to that freaking little chest.
You know why characters in DB have so many forms? Journey to the west did it first. Its the "can Goku defeat this character" of its time
If you read the books the chapters even end with lines like “how will monkey defeat this new threat, find out in the next chapter!”

Wait till u reach hundred eyed daoist ch 4 boss
@@jacksmith-mu3ee Tough one but took me about 5 try only.
If it takes a game to do that, bring on gaming.
The invisible walls would be fine if the game had something like a map.
A map will ruined this games. It's the mystery not knowing where your heading that makes exploration so much fun.
