I think about 60% of the stages are better, but they completely screwed up spinal's stage, it's supposed to be green with all the spirits around, now the boat manages to look out of place. Everything's blue and orange like a blockbuster action movie, when I realized that I couldn't unsee it.
thanks. been looking for a video like this that showed how it looked before. not only did they update the graphics quality, lighting, etc. They also pushed the resolution up to from 720p at launch, to 900p for season 2. And I saw an interview a while back where Ken Lobb said they pushed it to what I call the weird resolution(because of the numbers) to something like 1360x1080p. Something like that. it had alot to do with the change from DirectX11 to DirectX12. Anyway, great video.
Overall this is a positive graphical change because it gives the game a new graphical dynamic to engage the player. Capcom should take a note from these guys because this is how it should be done if SFV is going to be a platform for future enhancements.
Most stages look better, with the exception of some stages like spinal's where they took away the green ambiance of the stage so now it looks like any old sea harbor. It looks like they increased the overall reflectivity, which looks great for metal and icy characters and objects, like glacius and fulgore and their respective stages, but makes everyone else look like they're soaking wet or something, especially TJ combo. Also all the blacks were crushed severely so, while light sources and fall off look overall improved a lot, everything feels way too "contrasty". And before, for the characters, it looks like they had a point light at the front of stage or something so the fronts of the characters were actually lit up, but it now looks like that's been removed in favor of more "natural" lighting, which unfortunately makes the characters look all dark and shadowy from the front, and makes the dynamic shadows from the stages look less vivid on the characters. If they could remove the crushed blacks, take the reflectivity off certain characters, and bring back the frontal character lighting, it'd be an A+.
+Nick Mannanov yeah, if IG doesn't plan on adjusting the lighting anymore, then I honestly hope a modder might find a way to access it. I think the lighting you mention on the characters could definitely use more tweaks in particular. In some stages the heavy contrast of light and shadow on some characters causes their skin to almost look metallic, where a softer light around them might have helped prevent that.
Most of those "improvements" are awful, IMO. The new lighting is too harsh & very unnatural. The only stage that looks better in Season 3 is Sadira's stage (spider cave). Some just look like major steps down. All that excessive contrast/saturation makes the stages feel visually exhausting. The subtle shift of light on the floor as the sun/moon passes behind clouds are missing in the Jago/Shadow Jago stages. Bummer. Whoever the Iron Galaxy lightning is hasn't learned about chromatic fatigue (or why surgeons wear green aprons during prolonged visual exposure to viscera/red). Great video comparing the two styles; thanks for the upload.
+Samuel Cazetta Well i don't know, if something looks at least slightly better (which applies to most of S3 stages) i think it's definitely considered an upgrade. At the end of the day it's just a matter of personal opinion i guess.
unfortunately, a youtube video is probably the worst possible way to show the changes. the compression makes some of the stages look much worse than they actually are.
Hectorlo screenshots I guess. any kind of video compression is going to make it look a lot worse, KI is very dependent on detail in its dark areas and particles to look good.
+DE Climax This has always been the case with KI. Ever since the initial E3 debut. People said it looked like crap, but when you see it in person, OMG, it was glorious! TH-cam and other videos does not do it justice at all. Just have to tell people to take a look for themselves, but may be hard to now that Season 3 is here.
Some of the stages look so much better, namely Maya's, Kan-Ra's and Agano's stages, but else idk :s I loved the colour of Thunder's and Spinal's stages and that change just made them look really weird to me
Some stages look alright, but Hisako's & TJ's look pretty. The tone of the graveyard stage is ominous & creepy, downtown stage feels more like a city that looks ragid & torn up
+Johnny Burnes (44Burnes) Wow. Yeah. Only Glacius' stage/look I really feel is an absolute improvement. There are others I like a bit better than their original, but for almost all of them, I prefer the original look. Sorry Iron Galaxy. Good effort.
I prefer the original looks demonstrated in this vid. I can actually see the characters better and the textures are nice especially on Aganos. Jago and Shago's stage lose the cloud's lighting on the ground. I really ended up missing it when seeing the comparison. The worst culprit is the purple shadows though especially on Omen.
Personal preference: Note I don't own the game, but I do want to say my opinion on such a big change. Jago's stage - Season 1&2 look slightly better after seeing the transition @ 4:45 Season 3 version doesn't pop out anymore, and in fact make it a bit more cluttered. Not sure why they chose to do it that way. Even the color changed, which makes it feel a bit more depressing... Yellow'ish look to a Bluer look is kind of huge. Saberwulf - I genuinely like the change in Season 3. Overall a good change. The lighting from Season 1&2 look like a XBOX360 game, while the lighting in S3 reminds me of Blood Borne, even though I don't own the game. Glacius - Huh... Not much to say but S3's does look a lot better. I can see what they were going for, more of a ''doom and gloom'' feel. Pretty nice. Cheif - Weird. I don't like Season 3's lighting at all, it removes the shadows depth for some reason. Like, 3:37 the lack of shading (more less they could of added Ambient Occlusion?) around Thunder's foot making it look like he's somewhat floating, in Season 3 of course... I'm not sure what they were going for in this change. Sadira - 5:17 Now this confuses me. This is the biggest change so far. They change the lighting, coloring, and position of shadows of the stage? Why? I thought Season 1&2's looked fine and really put emphasis on the 'cave of spiders' idea. This isn't a good change in my opinion because Season 3 doesn't makes them pop out anymore... Questionable decisions overall. Orchid - Well the stage lighting looks better, but I'm not sure why exactly the characters are dimmer now. Oh well, the stage overall looks nicer. Spinal - 11/10 change. Not much to say I really like this one. Fulgore - Jesus Christ the amount of positional lighting!! Amazing work. I honestly feel like they worked really hard for the amount of detail on this stage. :D DJ Combo - Eh, nothing changed really other than harder shadows and changed lighting. So indifferent I guess. Maya - I literally said ''what.'' out loud at the lighting change. I mean, she looks like she was covered in grass before she started fighting or something... So apparently the light source bounces off so hard that they become the same color as the stage? Unless Fulgore's stage is like that too (which was harder get across since he is a robot) then the changes aren't for the better because they are literally blending into the stage, which is the opposite of game design, when you want to see the most of your character. Kan-Ra - Overall, not bad. Seems that most of the darker stages with Season 3 lighting look a lot better. Riptor - Same as Kan-Ra. Omen/Shadow Jago - Same as Riptor Aganos - Indifferent. Hisako - Same as Omen/Shadow Jago. Cinder - In my opinion, doesn't look like it changed anything, so indifferent? Aria - The amount of Rim Lighting in Season 3 makes me really dislike it. Mainly in the darker section of the stage, but I guess it's fine when the background opens up. So yeah, that's my opinion. :P Can't wait for it to release on PC.
Ex shadow effect was perfect back at season 2. Why change it into a purple splashing kind of thing like everyone was a shadow lord. The purple shadow should be exclusive to evil characters or just bosses. You'd even toggle them on menu. Blurry frames are much cooler than this purple crap coming out of the fighters
@@cypher7031 Perhaps because it's their on interpretation of ex power and how Gargos presence affects things. Feels like we're stuck on season 3 no matter how you do the campaign it's useless and makes Gargos role like he's invincible no matter how many times you kill him. Truth is this game are focused on online gameplay and no time for a simple matter called lore. Gargos loop are cinge as f. Feels like the Earth are doomed forever no salvation though.
Some improvement. But some levels lighting like in Fulgore, Maya looks worse I find, most look better. Also a slight increase in specular in some charcaters that distract overdone rim lighting. But overall its better. Looking forward for a next gen update, game is awesome !
I see they still haven't decided on the skin complexion for Orchid. Dark as hell on the first, Light as fuck on the second. Mid tone to light in season 1&2, dark for the classic custom, and back the dark as hell for season 3. But never stopped being sexy tho.
Thanks so much for making this video! Was wondering why S3 content looked so rough, now I get it, the lighting is really awful. The atmosphere, character, and ambience is being ripped right out of this game. KI had a really unique visual style, and the beauty of the stages artists worked tirelessly on is either being muddled or completely lost. Even for the sake of visual clarity, the new lighting does not make sense. Artistically, it's embarrassing, and I'm actually sad that KI has lost so much of what it once had.
Wtf are you talking about if you played the game in the beginning of season 1 the game looked completely black/dark in stages then S2 looked washed out and now with S3 it just looks amazing
+SDS Overfiend nobody paid me. I realise now I probably overreacted and should spend time with the game before I come to a conclusion. Just based on this video it seems like the changes make KI look less defined and more generic.
+Oscar you might be right, it just seemed to me like the changes were in poor taste. I really liked how the game used to look. A lot of players seem to love the new look so I guess mission accomplished.
+Mohan Singh I'm just joshing you.... Imagine how people felt seeing backgrounds change colors from Streetfighter 2 to Champion edition lol.. . That's how I look at it. TH-cam is not the best source for graphical comparisons especially if it's not 1060p60fps. In motion I can see the lighting effects and they are done tastefully in the right spots.
seasson 3 looks awful compared to 1-2 , the way the light was set on the first 2 felt more like a fighting stage well crafted just for us , the third one looks like you're fighting on a random locale.
Well crap, if Capcom wants to overtake Killer Instinct, they REALLY have to improve a lot of stuff. But right now I'll just stick with Iron Galaxy for now. Not feeling STV and Capcom :/

The ground texture looks a lot worse on Sabrewulf's stage in season 3.
Some good upgrades, only one or two stages looked better in season 1/2. Especially Maya's stage.
Fulgore's stage had already changed once in Season 2 and changed again in Season 3. Really like how it looks for majority of them.
+Hectorio Nice job putting this together by the way.
Thanks
omg look at that glacius!! very nice job man!!
They should kept Jago's, Orchid and Spinal's stage untouched but so far the other stages are vastly better than season 2

I didn't even notice the classic music in the background when fighting except Cinder's stage
12:17 that song and Jago theme are the best
Glacius' stage looks much better, less of a white and blue mess. Spinal's stage, on the other hand, lost all the green! That's too bad
Very good video man! Thanks!
Upgrade is not a proper word. They just CHANGED the lighting/tones, what is different from a 'improvement' in fact.
You bugging.. I can see clearly the visual upgrade... Gtfoh
SDS Overfiend You can, I can not. I work with UE4, you probably don't. So, yeah, actually YOU're bugging.

It looks like anisotropic filter was removed in alot of stages for season 3. Giving textures , specially on the ground, a more muddy look.
SUCKS

They fucked up Combos Stage when you do an ultra. The train that crashes through the stage shines an over saturated white light that looks awful.
Not all changes are objectively better, but its an overall significant improvement. Some levels were just too bland.
how do you change the character theme stage music to classic?
You can't change it, it starts playing if you're idle.
they made things darker
