@@hardywoodaway9912I’d agree however one of the “artificial” use cases EV detractors throw out is long range road tripping and charging, combined with the length of time it adds to a trip.
I checked the runtime of the video before hitting, and got shocked - under one hour. Fortunately just an intro, looking so much forward to the hours of watching how this unravels!
Can't wait to see the result. Would also like to see a similar race where cars are required to stop at hotels for the night, rather than drive around the clock, as I think most people doing a real road trip would prefer to be sleeping (in a real bed, not a car seat) rather than driving at 1 in the morning. Assuming the cars are able to charge overnight at the hotels, this would reduce the impact of DC charging speeds on total trip time and also the travel time difference between electric vs. gas in general.
Please don't forget to share charging/fueling costs at the end. After a 3400 mile trip with a Turo Model 3 this summer, exclusively supercharging,I was surprised to find the per mile cost pretty similar to gas costs had I rented a Camry hybrid.
I think the cost savings occur when utilizing the EV as a daily driver and (a big AND mind you) if you are able to charge at home with decent kWh charging costs. Out on the highway, road tripping, the cost per kWh is many times higher than if charging at home.
@@kiwi335d It will be interesting to see if it's at least cost-competitive with gasoline. On road trips I like to use overnight level 2 charging to reduce costs, but that's not an option here!
Even on a big road trip, you still get to purchase some of the electricity at cheap home utility rates, simply by leaving home with a full battery and arriving back with a near-empty battery. That savings is not nothing - especially with a big-range car like a Lucid. You can't do that with a gas car, where 100% of the miles traveled must be from gas purchased at a gas pump.

I love this kind of road trip video even if it is time consuming. 😂 I'd like to see a summary of the fuel cost for every car. That might be helpful for viewers in terms of a buying desicion. If you are in Germany anytime, I really wish to see you guys in RL.
Based on that thought, ICE wins. My 2019 Audi A4 got between 36 to 38 mpg, going 70 to 80 mph with a pass going way faster. I am hard on acceleration. From St Louis to Duluth, MN only stopped once for gas and had just shy of half tank left when arrived in Duluth.
As a North Dakotan and an Ioniq 5 owner, I find the route interesting. I have tried to plan a trip to Seattle but believe it to be a challenge at this time. That stretch thru Montana on I94/I90 is daunting. Way too much reliance on single location charging. A big improvement will be Tesla Supercharger access. And even then, there is at least one V2 charger on the route. My vote is for the Tesla Model 3 because of charger infrastructure.
I think the Model S LR vs Plaid might actually be a big difference for range, in your test of the Model X LR vs Plaid 70 MPH the LR got 45 more miles of range which is quite a lot

Love that the automakers are lending out these cars so people can see what they're like in the real world, especially on road trips, which is one thing on many people's minds even if they aren't using them that much for it. So many folks still think you have to charge an EV for 4 hours per stop, not realizing DC fast chargers can be significantly faster than that. Another race I would love to see is the $25,000 and under EV 500 miles challenge. Kyle has been great about buying used EVs and showing the reality of buying them. That is great, but I think a race where you open it up to anyone and any EV, brand new, used, truck, sedan, etc. The key will be proof of buying the electric vehicle for less than $25,000 before taxes and license fees. The great twist would be to have the cheapest EVs given an edge by allowing them to leave first. The cheaper the EV, the earlier they get start the race. Then you would have the higher end of this group chasing the ultra cheap ones. Use the basic rules from this race to keep it safe, but I think people have forgotten about vehicles like the Ford Focus electric and some of the other earlier generation EVs. I would allow for people who get government rebates to enter, but they will the last to leave if their vehicle only made the $25,000 and under cap due to a government rebate. I think for viewers, you have people just loving seeing all the EVs going at it, but the value of these EVs will shine, or not. It could be very educational for people who fear the idea of buying a used EV. Doing 500 miles will be a solid test and more miles than most would ever do in a day in these used EVs. The charging will be painfully funny in some cases. Maybe some will older EVs with newer batteries installed. I could see all kinds of factors making it interesting, but I hope in the end building more trust in getting an EV, Just a thought, keep up the impressive work.
Honestly, I would much more prefer to see a race where the navigation is set to the final destination, and all the cars are supposed to figure out the best route and charging options. That is how more than 90% of people buying these cars will drive them. Because navigation and route planning is now a vital part of car manufacturing, which is now taken out of the equation. But on some road trips it could save massive amounts of time.
