  • Monday afternoon, Whitehall Fire Department (WFD) responded for a report of a structure fire at 2121 Fuller Street in the West Catasauqua section of the township. Deputy 3503 (Bilder) arrived to find light smoke from the one car garage. Engine 2 arrived with only a Motor Pump Operator (MPO). The driver stretched a hand line to the garage in preparation of the second due engine with more manpower.
Tower Ladder 6 arrived shortly after Engine 2 with only the driver. The driver grabbed a saw to take the garage door. Engine 3 arrived with manpower to put the hand line in-service.
It is unknown to Newsworking what exactly was on fire in the garage.

The saw should have started on first pull - no excuse - that means they ignored daily maintenance. Do I need to continue?

Im confused by why the door was already damaged? Warping from the heat? Did not seem like a hot fire. Also when they cut the door you can tell a FF was already inside with the hose line. There must have been a back door. I'm not sure why they were dealing the main door. They could have has a negative pressure fan/smoke ejector vent from the exterior entry door.

    • @engineco.1494

Bruh the door literally rolled up a bit as he was cutting the door…
Like they could’ve literally pushed it up or you know, maybe ask those 3-4 interior guys what’s the situation before ripping out the garage door.
Insurance probably won’t even cover it if they deep it unnecessary to have the door removed.
Also, who doesn’t tout their SCBA on before standing 6 feet from the smoke?
Not a firefighter but i usually see all the crew minus driving having their SCBA on by the time they leave the truck or far away from the house.

    • @enid0mom
      @enid0mom 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There is a reason they don’t just roll up the garage door. It can go back down on on its own. That has been shown to trap firefighters. Opening the door from the inside, if they can get to it, might not work because of fire damage. Also, most people today have garage door openers. You have to disconnect the opener from the door to open it manually.

@@MihirK007 they have to go INSIDE to pop it off the tracks as far as I can tell. If there was nothing in the way for doing that it would then also collapse if taken off the rails. I have replaced garage doors. They are not all that expensive, but they can be if you have luxury tastes. Believe me, there is a reason for everything a firefighter does and those who don’t follow training can hurt themselves and others.
As far as cutting the garage door, I have seen hundreds of fire videos where the door was cut. There are different methods of cutting, diagonal vs horizontal for instance, but that is SOP, standard operating procedure for most if not all departments.

Yes, we all make mistakes and we learn from them ( hopefully), but we also are supposed to get the job done with minimal damage to the homeowners property. Unless you were on this " job" do you know if it had a finished ceiling ( any little storage sheds or garages I've been in are open attic) no ceiling to pull, therefore easy access to what little fire there was on this one ( my trash barrel smokes more than this thing), they could have just forced entry on the man door ( $100 fix) and determined at that point if the overhead door needed to come down. IF it was an open attic, no need to vent the roof...........roll up the overhead from inside and see how " horizontal " ventilation works. That's a cool ( cheaper) concept to. 🤷‍♂️

Many reasons. First its a point of egress, ooening it could cause it to close blocking the point of egress. Two opening the door can transfer the weight load to the ceiling rafters. Which could be weakened by the fire and colapse on the crew. Opening the door also blocks access to the ceiling to extinguish fire that could still be in the trusses or rafters.

If your home or a trusted neighbor with keys and a fire starts somewhere in the house open the front and back doors and garage door before the firefighters arrive because if they find find them locked they will open them up their way...if you get my meaning.

That is horrible advice. You will create a wind tunnel and the house will be gone by the time the fire department gets there, especially this one in the video

This is one of the better posts. Gives the armchair, internet Fire Chiefs something to make themselves feel important. :)
