Jeep JK (Pentastar) power steering pump replacement, some pumps work better than others

  • While out on a trail run, the power steering pump in the Wrangler started to sound like a heart monitor with a high pitched beeping sound. So before it failed, a replacement new pump was ordered.
    As soon as I took the new PS pump out of the box, I could feel more play in it than the old one. It was a matter of time that the new fluid with the new pump started to smell burnt. Another new pump from the same company was ordered. Similar amount of play, and similar burning power steering smell.
    A remanufactured Mopar power steering pump (part number 5154400AC) was ordered. It had next to no play. Since replacing it, power steering fluid looks good and no longer smells burnt.

    Really good job on camera placement as well as lighting. and watching hands.
    Being a mechanic is one thing, but making useful videos and editing them is a comple separate skill. Good job.

    Just a heads up. never start the vehicle on an empty pump. Good practice is to install the pump and res first. Fill the res, then spin the pump by hand to draw in fluid. Then install belt last. Jack up the front so wheels are off teh ground, and manually work the steering wheel back and forth as you fill the fluid. This will need about 50 back and forth to bleed teh air out. Once the air is largely out you can start the vehicle. and continue another 25 or so cycles lock to lock while running and cap off. This process will allow your pump a much greater life expectancy

    Eric, great video. Very detailed and to the point. I picked up new Mopar pump, but it did not include O-rings. What size is the O-Ring for the supply line?

    • @EricCantin
      @EricCantin  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, the trial and error was getting frustrating!
      Good question. It was included with the off brand kit and the original one is long gone. I think most generic O-Ring kits would have one the same size. Another option would be to go to the local autoparts store with the removed O-Ring to see if they can match the size.

      Hey Eric, I completed my PS pump replacement. Thank you again for your detailed video. It was very helpful to the DIY guy like me. : ). The O-Ring size on the supply side is a 5/16 x 7/16 x 1/16.

    Thank you so much for posting this. It's so clear and well organized. Will this work with a 3.8 as well? The setup looks the same but I want to make sure.

    • @EricCantin
      @EricCantin  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the 3.8 pump is at the top of the engine and much easier to access and replace. Concept would be similar, but not identical. Good luck!

      @@EricCantin you were right! Thank you so much! It was much simpler to get to. I decided to change my supply hose too since it was stiff and bulging.

    did u end up having more issues with the piwersteering system? I'm on pump #3 and I'm suspecting the teflon off the line came off since pump # just failed on me. might want to change out that high pressure line for another one.

    • @EricCantin
      @EricCantin  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So far so good (our other JKU had a similar issue and fine with Mopar replacement). Very possible that you have a line is degraded and causing issues. Good luck.

    • @xXDannySilvaXx
      @xXDannySilvaXx ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@EricCantin well I fixed the issue. it was the high pressure line. there's a known problem with the JK's high pressure line. teflon liner inside the high pressure line delaminates and makes its way into the gearbox.

      @@xXDannySilvaXx I might as well tackle this pre-emptively. Thank you.

      It would, but this Wrangler is going to remain tame for now. Have a few other Jeeps that’ll be getting crazier upgrades.

    Had anvance auto replacement, makes more noise than factory one so swapping back.. it was my steering shaft that was problem, and in last year my bottom hose came loose twice. Jeep wrangler sucks, wish i had my old ford escape back, never got stuck in snow with that, got stuck twice in the wrangler.

    • @EricCantin
      @EricCantin  18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Only way a Ford Escape could be better than a Wrangler in the snow is due to tires. Have seen many Jeep owners rely on mud terrains all winter and make similar statements.

      Some manufacturers tolerate more than others for the same unit.
