      Is a particular brand recommended from the link? AutoZone wanted to charge me $99 for a bulb here in South Carolina(US). Or will any H7 bulb do?

    For anyone struggling with North America drivers side low beam changes I suggest a video by cold stream (title something like VW headlight change THE HARD ONE). He shows a good hack using a Duplo Lego piece for leverage for those with bigger hands and also shows correct orientation and turning direction for housing unit which helped me immensely. I struggled for literally 2hrs off and on but FINALLY got it. The problem for me was if I jostled the housing unit too much (even being careful), the bulb would get knocked out and I had to restart. Also in spite of eventually getting the housing unit in proper place with the 2 o’clock position, I didn’t realize you also have to give it a little push inwards on the top (towards the front of car) for the top part of housing to click all way in and be properly seated so it can be tightened till the “click” happens. Before I kept trying to thread gently and wiggle it into place and only bottom part of housing unit was going into the threads correctly (and it was lopsided downward and not turning or working). Good luck everyone!

      You're an absolute legend! (For those looking for the video, here is the link: th-cam.com/video/xbf3ks4tw_o/w-d-xo.html) I have big ol bear paws for hands, and the skin on the back of my hand got shredded up trying to get the damn bulb in...now that it's healed it looks like stigmata. I was so concentrated on finding the proper orientation that I kept jostling the bulb loose, and then I'd insert it back into the holder only to return and forget which direction it needed to go in and ooooof it was frustrating. This is going to help immensely.

    Hi Craig . A big thank you for this video . I have just used it for the third time in a couple of years to remind me how to do this job. I have now had to do the "difficult side" twice - with success. I can understand why you show changing the left hand one (drivers side in the UK) in the video - at least you can provide useful footage on this side . The right hand side one is definitely trickier but do-able if your hands are small enough , and if you are familiar with the technique. The bulb holder only twists about 20 degrees (that is my guess) anticlockwise and then you can release it. It is useful to remember the angle it is at as you remove it from the headlamp - because you need to re-insert the holder at the same angle to get it to slot into its location on the headlamp , just as you say in the video. And checking your progress by looking through the front of the headlamp is also a great tip.

    For those with TDIs, your headlight may have a clip holding it. On the right side of the headlight there will be two circular wires, you’re going to push them in and then they’ll come out , then you can take the headlight out, just make sure to clip them back in.

    Got my 61 (2012) Golf at the end of November last year and my low beam went on my passengers side on the way home from work 2 nights ago... Got some bulbs delivered yesterday and hopefully it won't be too tricky to replace them.
    I'll also be swapping my H15s soon too because my H7s are going to be white and it'll look daft 🤦🏼‍♂️
    Update: I changed my bulbs which took about 5 minutes or so and was a lot simpler than one of my friends said it would be even though I told him it's pretty simple. He has a 2002 BMW, so his bulbs are probably harder to replace 😂

    Very helpful! One extra tip: the fuse box on the (U.S.) driver's side prevented my hands from getting to the headlight. But I was able to partially unscrew the inside wheel well cover (don't know what the official name is) and get one hand in from underneath. Made all the difference.

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You've done the other side, you're familiar with what to grip and you're sure you're handling the right thing? Is it cold (warm it up gently with hot air gun)... or maybe try a *little* plastic-compatible penetrating oil if you can see where to put it. Remove fusebox if it's a problem. I find that once familiar with the other side and muscle memory in the fingers it's not an issue.
