Great work again will, thanks for the tips. I headed out last week to the fads although I did see a few Dollies well over a meter I couldn't snag one although I did get a Kingy. So many bust ups at the Seaway lately but still couldn't hook up regardless of what slug I would put on, I even tried the pink paddle tails but still go nothing, so frustrating 😅
G’day Flippa! Thanks for the comment mate and sorry for the late response. I’ve been flat out with work and struggling to get videos out and focus on fishing and TH-cam sadly! That’s always frustrating when you go out and can see them but they won’t bite hey. The FAD fish are tough like that - if you see dolphinfish free swimming out in the open ocean they usually eat just about anything. We’ve even hooked them; busted them off, then hooked the same fish again and caught it. They eat like crazy! The seaway has been alive with bait hey. Recently I saw on Facebook that a couple of big Spanish mackerel even got caught in there! Probably lots of tailor, trevally, and small tuna getting around. The mackerel are still around too on the reefs just off the seaway in around 30m depth. Tight lines Flippa, good to hear from you mate! 👍🎣

Hi mate! Yes it can definitely be frustrating some days when there are lots of people around the FADs. The 50 fathoms FADs definitely see less traffic, however you need a really really calm day to get out there. The 50 fathom FAD is 30km out. Often the fish out on the 50’s can be slightly less fussy and slightly larger, however the 36’s FADs are closer and easier to get to. There are also 3 there in a triangle whereas if you go to the 50 fathoms it’s 1 single FAD to the north and 1 single FAD to the south. If the weather was perfect and we had a choice, we’d probably want to go to the 50 fathoms FAD however we fish the 36 fathoms FADs more often. The best time to fish them is weekdays, early in the morning before other boats have hammered them, or after a week or so of bad weather when boats haven’t been fishing for them. I hope this helps mate
if you are changing your leader would you be sitting near the fad tieing up your rig again or do you just have different rod setup with you on the rocket launchers and do a quick swap...?
Hi mate! A lot of the time we’ll have a rod or two in the boat that have slightly lighter leader on them that we can just quickly tie a circle hook on the end of. Usually 30lb or 20lb leaders work fine and the fish won’t care - but if the dolphinfish are in good numbers and eating all the berley but not your baits, I’d then go to the effort of cutting my leader off and tying an even lighter one on to see if it can trick them into biting. I’d just do this quickly before driving back up for another drift. If you do have the chance to tie a slightly lighter leader on a spare rod the night before, it can definitely help! For example - we use a light 14lb leader for soft plastics for snapper. Some days the dolphinfish have been fussy, so we grab that rod and give it a cast and they’ll hit it.
