I tried the free rig in the past with no success, but the the information on how to fish it was a little more like drop shot technique. Dead sticking over it structure for a while makes a lot more sense with that heavier weight. Looks like I'll be tying it on for another try. Thanks for the info, New Sub!!
This time of year soft plastics in a Free rig, back glide, and heavy drop shot will catch about anything in the lake. I’ll have them tied on from now till middle-end of winter. Great video as always Hank.
Great video!! Best way I've ever seen on where to use the free rig. Thanks for those tips Hank!!!! Now I have a little more confidence in this rig!! Stay Safe & God Bless!!!!
Thank you. I've had success with it but it's been with finicky bass around tall cover or structure. Park it and make it jump to the bottom and slow rise up.
Another great technique Hank, and I always feel better when I have the same rig and baits as you. I been using the Zaza worm for a few years now along with other Nikko baits, and I use the angler free rig weights in 1/2 and 3/8 and even 1/4 but I rarely fish over 20’ in our lakes around Raleigh area. Love my TFO rods and glad you’re on the Resolve line, TFO is a great company and I first started using them 9 years ago for my fly rods ( I’ve got 4 TFO fly rods now) . Glad to see your growth and success and I hope you have a outstanding fall fishing season 😜🍀🎣🍀👊
thanks for the tips. I Like the color of boat. What motor size? I bought a 2020 mercury 4 stroke it was lightly lightly used. So far it’s a good one. I have 1 year on it now.
Hey @Bassgeek do you have any videos on the st Croix bass MOJO? I never see anyone recommend that rod and I was wondering about its best uses and limitations thanks for all the videos!
I remember coming up with this rig myself in the 2000’s. (Back when I actually used to fish the spawn). Kept the worm always going back into the bed. Didn’t have to worry about pulling a regular wacky or drop shot off the bed. I used casting weights, and floating worms with a wacky hook or mosquito hook I told people about it and they never listened. I guess it’s become a thing the last few years. Guess I was 20 years too early.
Got my first tournament of the year on nickajack this weekend. 2:30 hours away but we’re gonna go down there and grind. We both ain’t grass fishermen so we hope to survive.
What a great looking rig Hank! I see so much potential in that! I will be trying this rig for sure!! I love the under water footage you showed. Thanks Hank! I appreciate you!
I've free rigged last fall, it definitely works. From the bank I used an 1/8 ounce. Had a ZOOM Lizard and bingo. Thanks Mr. Hank! #100percentwatchsquad
@@BassGeek great Hank very busy this summer, but still keeping tabs on you lol. Keep up the great work buddy, hope all is well. Love your new ride buddy 👍😎🎣
Thanks for sharing on Nikko products. Surprisingly zman baits will not float up with this rig. I love zman baits. They are buoyant but not enough to float up with even a light wire hook using this rig. I would like to know of other baits that are buoyant enough to work with this rig the way you fish it (without dragging).
@@BassGeek update: I have tested more Zman baits. ( tested weather they would float with free rig) I found that most of them float but a few ( Ned and large 4” Ned baits) do not. Same exact packaging. The colors that would not float are green pumpkin, Golby Bryant and 4” P&J.
Great rig and great how to use explanation My only problem and this strictly me PERSONALLY saying so with all the guys putting out fishing content on YT is cost. Fishing soft plastics has been my A#1 go to method for fishing since the mid 1980's Caught 90% of all my largemouth over 7lbs and my PBLM of 9lbs 11oz on a Texas rigged curly tail worm I have always bought the most sensitive rod I could afford to fish soft plastics And that can not go over price ceiling is $130 I also have been fishing for salmon and steelhead in streams near my home since the late 1980's and bass gear is useless for creek fishing salmon and steelhead and good quality rods and reels for salmon and steelhead are absolute must have items and affordable spinning reels are very unlikely to survive a single season creek fishing for salmon and steelhead and cost you both grief and more than a few fish in the process My two sons are also fish all the time now both with me and thier friends and they also need their own fishing equipment My point being as much as I would absolutely love to have a $300 rod and reel set up for each style of fishing from soft plastics to a finess setup to a dedicated crankbait setup to a dedicated frog setup and a dedicated spinnerbait and chatter bait setup I absolutely can not afford to do so So I try as best as I can to buy rods and reels that can pull double duty for bass fishing as my salmon and steelhead rods and reels are reserved strictly for that. I do take care to use the proper line for tge correct application and that does help
That I totally get. Trust me I give my recommendations on rod and reel but by NO means am I saying have this rod for only this rig. This rig can be amused for sooooooo many different things. From casting jigs to spinnerbaits to Texas rigs etc. I’m just giving that recommendation to help people out and know where to start
#100percentwatchsquad I've never used a free rig, but I know a couple guys who do use it quite often. I was thinking of using a drop shot the next time I take the Bass Buggy, but I might switch that up to a free rigl
By far the best video I have seen explaining this technique, thanks.
@@lancesellers5368 thanks Lance
I've got the K9 FLORO on the way. You've got me thinking of several baits and ways to fish the FREE Rig. Thanks bud!!
Nice! I hope ya catch a bunch

Good luck and it is a great finesse technique.
Thanks for sharing your technique of fishing the free rig. I am going to have to add that to my arsenal to try around a couple tree stumps!
Man it's great around docks and vortical cover and structure.
This time of year soft plastics in a Free rig, back glide, and heavy drop shot will catch about anything in the lake. I’ll have them tied on from now till middle-end of winter. Great video as always Hank.
Yes sir all of those can be great right now.
Thanks for the breakdown on the free rig Hank. I will give this a try for sure.

So good around things cover structure.

Hey Mr. Perryman good here from ya sir hope your well and yeah it’s a fun technique
Do Nikko lures float!
Love the look of this rig. Can't wait to try it out. Thanks
It's fun to fish.
That's a cool rig can't wait to give it a try. Your tips and techniques never disappoint keep up the great work.
Thank you very much I hope that it helps and I hope you catch a big on it.
Very nice video! Thanks for sharing some great information. Enjoyed watching as always. Keep up the good work!
Thank you and I appreciate the support
Good class thanks
Thank you very much.
I enjoy the long stories. Helps me get through the work day. I can’t wait for the tons of content to come 🫡
I’ve got a bunch of
#100percentwatchsquad. Another great video Hank. I'll have to get some of those Nikko baits for my free rig.
They are very worth it sir.
Good informative video about the free rig 😊Greetings from Stockholm Sweden 🇸🇪
AWESOME! Thank you Stockholm!
Been loving the free rig, I'm ready for fall fishing though
Me too! I can't wait for them to just feed like mad.
thanks for the tips. I Like the color of boat. What motor size? I bought a 2020 mercury 4 stroke it was lightly lightly used. So far it’s a good one. I have 1 year on it now.
It’s a 250 and it’s for sale
Hey @Bassgeek do you have any videos on the st Croix bass MOJO? I never see anyone recommend that rod and I was wondering about its best uses and limitations thanks for all the videos!
I have not used them. I have a bunch of older St. Croix rods and loved them. The mojo's are glass right. I know they are great for traps and cranks.
Great video on the free rig Hank! I definitely gotta mess with this rig more. #100percentwatchsquad
It's sort of a spot deal for me. I love it around docks or vertical cover.
I remember coming up with this rig myself in the 2000’s. (Back when I actually used to fish the spawn). Kept the worm always going back into the bed. That's pretty cool. It is great for target fishing like beds.
I like watching your videos, you explain things very well.
Thank you very much

Go get'em I don't get to fish a lot of grass it's one of my weak points.
Hey Hank great tips on free rig fishing.
It’s a target rig for sure
@@BassGeek Hank I've seen the rig in underwater videos and honestly I think the Free rig gives the bait your useing more movement than a Texas rig.
Thanks it’s a great bait
First time watching one of you videos, Great content thanks. I’m subbed now.
Thank you welcome to the #BassGeekNation and I hope ya enjoy it
What a great looking rig Hank! I see so much potential in that! I will be trying this rig for sure!! I love the under water footage you showed. Thanks Hank! I appreciate you!
Thank you Brad. I love this rig when I know they are on the bottom. It just looks like something feeding down aggressively.
Agree 100% with everything, but mono is a must. Cmon, you got that Hookset Hank. I've seen you swinging that TFO.
Hahaha Those TFO ROCK I just don’t like the stretch
Super amazing breakdown on the Free Rig- it is an awesome tool to know how and when to use it. Thank you #100percentwatchsquad
Thank you and yes sir it is.
I've free rigged last fall, it definitely works. From the bank I used an 1/8 ounce. Had a ZOOM Lizard and bingo. Thanks Mr. Hank! #100percentwatchsquad
Thank you and those zoom lizards at killer
I don't watch every video but when I do it's 100%!
Hey that counts!
How well does this work in current?
It will lay over
I find that my hook up percentage just plain sucks with that elaztech stuff. It sticks to the hook shaft and point too much and it doesn't sink good.
I like bigger hooks on this type of material. Now with the Free rig you want it to float.
Great video Hank! Very informative, keep up the awesome how to videos buddy. 👍🐸 #BGN
Ranger how you doing bro!
@@BassGeek great Hank very busy this summer, but still keeping tabs on you lol. Keep up the great work buddy, hope all is well. Love your new ride buddy 👍😎🎣
Rock, dock or even a sock!!!! Lmao.
I love the free rig, started using it two years ago. Just a pain I have to order the weights
Yeah they always get us some how.
So I guess this rig works best with lures that float?
It does in my opinion but you can use it with others the fall will change up.
Caught a lot of fish on the free rig last year, inexplicably haven't thrown it this year
hahaha If you're like me If I caught'em on it last year it wouldn't work this year anyway. hahahaha

Sounds like it might be good for pestering fish under a dock into biting.
Yes it is
Great rig and great how to use explanation
My only problem and this strictly me PERSONALLY saying so with all the guys putting out fishing content on YT is cost.
Fishing soft plastics has been my A#1 go to method for fishing since the mid 1980's
Caught 90% of all my largemouth over 7lbs and my PBLM of 9lbs 11oz on a Texas rigged curly tail worm
I have always bought the most sensitive rod I could afford to fish soft plastics
And that can not go over price ceiling is $130
I also have been fishing for salmon and steelhead in streams near my home since the late 1980's and bass gear is useless for creek fishing salmon and steelhead and good quality rods and reels for salmon and steelhead are absolute must have items and affordable spinning reels are very unlikely to survive a single season creek fishing for salmon and steelhead and cost you both grief and more than a few fish in the process
My two sons are also fish all the time now both with me and thier friends and they also need their own fishing equipment
My point being as much as I would absolutely love to have a $300 rod and reel set up for each style of fishing from soft plastics to a finess setup to a dedicated crankbait setup to a dedicated frog setup and a dedicated spinnerbait and chatter bait setup I absolutely can not afford to do so
So I try as best as I can to buy rods and reels that can pull double duty for bass fishing as my salmon and steelhead rods and reels are reserved strictly for that.

How would that work for me as a co-angler
About the same just soak it.
I must be living under a rock. I don't remember ever seeing that before.#100percentwatchsquad
It's a cool little rig. Very specific time that it shines but it's fun.
#100percentwatchsquad I've never used a free rig, but I know a couple guys who do use it quite often. I was thinking of using a drop shot the next time I take the Bass Buggy, but I might switch that up to a free rigl
It’s a great vertical cover rig
The cushions allow me to use smaller hooks
Nice!
