I love fishing a football jig in the local canals. There's almost no structure in them except the weeds on the bottom in the center. I was new to fishing a jig and kept getting hung up in the weeds, so thinking I wasn't going to get bit I yanked the jig free of the weeds and all of a sudden the weeds pulled back...I thought, wait a second, weeds don't pull back! My first catch on that jig was a large mouth at 6lbs 12 oz! Great info, thanks for sharing!

Before using a jig, I watched the guy who owned the boat that I was fishing with a black/blu jig with an uncle Josh pork rind during pre spawn. He caught 3 fish between 5 and 10 pounds within a half hour. Along with a spinner bait, it's truly a big bass jig.
The jig is my nemesis.... I simply can't get bite on this lure..... As much as I try, I just don't have any confidence in catching fish off this bait.. And, I fail to see how jig fisherman can say drop shotting is slow/dull.... Holy moly, I would say the exact same is true for jig fishing. Good video. Just returned from a day fishing with a Dirty Jigs finesse swim jig. Pitching into lay down trees on rock banks. I know I’m using it wrong but started in the tree drag out to the bottom a couple pops then a slow retrieve. Landed 13 of 22 bass. Thanks for putting me onto Dirty jigs .
I watched your other video on stroking jigs. While watching it I thought that’s exactly how I fish it. I guess I’m doing it right. I usually fish it like that in weeds, kinda like when you pop a lure out of the weeds when it gets stuck. I’ve never really been a dragger only shorter pops in rocks. I’ll have to give those a try. I really like watching your channel because your a northern guy and I’m from Connecticut. Not that bass are different but the techniques seem to be a little different. I feel northern style’s need to have a bit more finesse. When I watch and try the southern stuff I just can’t seem to get a lot of it to work.
You mentioned getting stuck more with the 1st technique. I remember a video by Denny Brauer where he said “If you aren’t losing jigs, your not fishing them right.” Good thing jigs don’t cost much. I make my own over the long northern Illinois winters so I have plenty to lose over the season 😂👍 another great video.
"Good thing jigs don’t cost much." I bet you would change your mind about that if you walk into a tackle shop nowadays! Some bass jigs cost $5 a piece or more nowadays! If you lose 10 in a day that's a fortune!
The jig has been one of my confidence baits for a long time and I’ve always had a ton off success with it. I attribute a lot of that from fishing a shaky head religiously before I ever picked up the jig.

Thx again Matt! "Snapping" works so well in many situations when your lure gets a little stuck in grass.....chatterbait, buzzbait, spinnerbait and dark sleeper!
Matt, I love getting my jig hung up in the grass and snapping it out with a stroke. When imitating a crawfish, I will snap it twice so it imitates a fleeing craw. The stroking technique has saved me on non aggressive days with reaction bites!
Sweet video. I've been using a football jig and casting jig to burn the flats. I have a 8:3:1 reel. I turn the handle super fast for half a rotation or a full rotation. Then I let it sit. So the jig looks like a fast tadpole or guppy. They react with a fast bite, then I pause it when I feel them bite, watch the line move, then set the hook.
MATT you hit the right press on the jigs , most of the people, just throw it out lift and fall, its ok but not for pressured fish, you have showed the right way to use it it will help the fisherman a great deal. thanks for showing it to all fisherman. thanks for that info.

Id love to see one on spinnerbaits, that is one bait I love to fish, and I do alot, but for me its the one bait I pretty much just chuck and wind, maybe a twitch or 2 through the whole retrieve. Liveing in a great lakes salmon/steelhead fishery its surprising how few people target bass here, especially largemouth, so I don't really have other people to compare notes with.

Great tips. Thanks and Happy 4th. 🇺🇸
Same to you!
I'm putting together a tw order. How do I know if the affiliate link is working?
www.tacklewarehouse.com/?from=MSFG as long as you use this link or one of the others in the video description to get you to the TW website it will work. Thanks for the support!
Thanks Matt. Good stuff as always.
thank you!
@@MattStefanFishing Forgot: Happy 4th to you and yours Matt.
I can't believe alot of anglers say they don't fish a jig at all when I learned how to use one I have one always tied on I caught alot of huge bass on a jig love to throw one !
one of my favorite baits as well
Damn that jig setup you have here is so damn good! Now I've got to go buy it. Just as good is this vid and a lot of people I fish with...even kayak tournaments I'm in...nobody fishes a jig...it's reaction then throw worms if it's slow. Also, 3/8 or 1/2oz preferred?
I prefer 1/2 oz
Someone getting into jig fishing more, this helps a lot.
Glad to hear it!
Thanks for this info awesome video.
No problem!
I could talk about fishing jigs all day. You can pretty much fish anything anywhere with a jig. Heck, if I'm only allowed one bait box to fish with, of course I'm taking a jig box!
Did you catch that fish?
No I gave up...he beat me!
@@MattStefanFishing Did you throw topwater?
Do you throw a 3/8 or 1/2oz?
i prefer a 1/2 oz
