Crazy that so many Australians shun this fish and see it only as bait. Easily our most overlooked and underrated species.
Globally it is one of the most consumed salt water fish. When cooked the right way I rate it in my top 10 (and my day job is selling seafood).
So easy to catch and super easy to clean. Bleed them and chuck them straight in an ice slurry and they are top tucker. I love baking the large ones whole in foil with different herbs and spices. I fillet the smaller ones and coat them in a "rub" before frying.

Hi Scott hope. Your enjoying your break
Yes you reminded me how underrated this fish was .
In days gone by no one here would eat these , in Europe they are amazingly popular.
We went out next day after I saw you in the bay and cleaned up on them at one of your other spots.
Used zabiki jig rigs. 2 or 3 fish at a time at a time with some bread for burley .
To other readers this bloke is the the most knowledgeable charter boat in the bay and surrounds and works so hard to always get his clients fish .
    Book early he’s very popular.

Just came across your channel and subscribed. I was amongst so many slimies only 4 days ago I could have got out and walked on them. I hadn’t thought about salting them to prep for bait! Good stuff.

Thanks for another great video Scotty. I will keep a few XOS Slimy mackerel for the table next time we're offshore. We've always considered them to be the best livebait known to mankind - and had no idea they were excellent on the plate too. I'm guessing that Slimy mackerel are just like bonito, tailor and tuna - anything invited home for dinner gets the iki jimi routine, bled and straight into the ice slurry for the trip home. Cheers, Gavin

Interesting video as always. I fished Kurnell this morning around the wharf with bait and lures. No fish and did not see anyone catching anything. The small leatherjackets were stealing the bait as soon as it hit the water. I was in a kayak so the drums are a bit too far out for me.
I need to save up for one of your charters.
