This song is based off of the Book "The one who flew over the cuckoo's nest" or the movie. I swear Metallica is personally responsible for my literary tastes. I probably would've completely ignored Ernest Hemingway, HP Lovecraft, or Ken Kesey if I didn't hear that Metallica loved them. (I was a teenager in the 90's when I first heard For whom the bell tolls mind you).
I loved H.P. Lovecraft before personally listening to Metallica. For me, it was amazing hearing the influence in their music. Still some of my favorite songs.

Metallica - Damage Inc
I was admitted (against my will) into the inpatient mental health ward in my mid 20s, and just like everyone, I did not want to be there at first. I even tried to escape. Then they bunked me with an older man who had SERIOUS problems. Like, "Hello my name is so-and-so and I was abducted by aliens, and they are going to return en-mass and take us all away" problems. And my initial thought was "Oh God, how could they bunk me with this guy?! He is going to cause me to go more insane than I already am!". But after a few days, we actually became pretty good friends in a strange way, and when he finally left, I was sad to see him go. I even told him that I hope to see him on the mother ship. During my time there, I witnessed people with seemingly far greater issues than myself, go from mentally deranged to basically pretty normal, and it really gave me a sense of how powerful the human brain is, with its ability to relentlessly strive for equilibrium. There is a movie called "Its Kind of a Funny Story", and they really portrayed exactly what it's like to go through that process in the hospital. Worth a watch for sure!

Actually, *Dream No More* is the actual continuation of (has Cthulhu in it just like 'The thing that should not be' does, then again, *The Call of Ktulu is ALSO about Cthulhu!!) *The Thing That Should Not Be* - This song should be the continuation of &Fade to Black* - if anything...
"The Thing That Should Not Be" a song sooo underapprecicated, I LOVE THAT SONG!! The heavyness and anger in that song from the ´89 Seattle show is mind-blowing......
I’ve always thought this song was about Lovecraftian mythos in general. “Crawling Chaos underground” references Nyarlathotep and this song strikes me more as being about Dagon and the story “The Shadow Over Innsmouth” than Cthulhu but that’s just my observation. Also “All Nightmare Long” is a song based on Lovecraft as well, which I’m sure you already know

Regardless of who calls it what, the real name of the song is "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)". Just learn to read, and understand what was written. You're causing a fight ONLY because you seem to lack the understanding to know what's going on.
@@Salomon_G Vin DID call it Sanitarium, which we all call it, not Welcome Home. Did you even watch the video? But he said the title wrong after that. There is only one title of the song. It's "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" as it's written on the album. It is NOT "Sanitarium (Welcome Home)" which is what Vin said afterwards. James is correct. So you had nothing to correct. Stop fighting and just listen, stupid. You never needed to say anything, just listen, that's all.

Just saw Metallica in concert March 9th, they still are killing it!
I tried watching your reaction channel again, because of a huge Metallica fan, ( since the early 80's) enjoy watching your reactions to thier music, but what takes from her first time reaction, is when you start air playing to the song, it takes away her reaction to the song, when I assuming, it's her first time listening to the song.
I know it's hard to refrain yourself from doing this when you are listening to Metallica, but it does take away her full reaction to the entire song.

Metallica - The Day That Never Comes
I love this video. Some I care about deeply has been put in the mental ward of a hospital and I respect Vin a lot for sharing so much about his history. The person I know has told me that when she was hospitalized before, if she acted up, they would put her in "four points" where they basically strap her down to a bed. She was first institutionalized, I believe, in the early 2000s. So, the "keep him tied, it makes him well" line must have been a practice that they were doing at least until then. Anyway, I have a lot of respect for Vin for sharing this.
I listened to the entire "Master of puppets" album the other day. I really appreciated how awesome of an album it is. I think I need to put it in my top 5 best albums ever recorded.

Love your conversation. Particularly interesting for me bc I used to be a case manager that had clients in residential units and clients that were on parole/probation. Also led groups with adults and adolescents. Thanks for the perspective. So good. Keep up the great work. God bless.
R.I.P. Cliff. They were never the same again, I saw them on this tour. They were opening for Ozzy, they blew him off the stage. One of the best live shows I have seen.

I use to hang out at the old abandoned Byberry mental institution and got some crazy stories. Buy NOTHING compared to the nightmarish hell i went through when i was committed to Norristown State Hospital. Twas after a suicide attempt in which i was gone for over 20 mins. Barely came back and thrown in there to face unbelievable things. Worse then out of horror movies. As if the death experience wasnt bad enough. But it woke me up so to speak. What i thought was bad before was NOTHING! So after a crafty performance, i got out and, blared "No Remorse" ironically and took back life. Unfortunatly hit lower points later but somehow able to keep perspectives to push on. And Metal is my #1 go to to help! ♡
The song that got me into Metallica such a deep emotional and dark song this speaks volumes of what went on in the institutions back in the day wow

I'm a fan of the band, mostly from The Knowing up to & including The Novella Reservoir, although I do like some other songs scattered throughout he rest of their catalog too. Even though I wouldn't start with Autumn Reflection as an intro to the band, I'd still like to see it done for you.

A Cliff story about this song: band was preparing/writing the album in 1985, one day Cliff said to Het: "I can play the guitar, check this out", grabbed an acoustic guitar and played the riff which would be used in this song, between main solos.
Vin you should write a book about your time in the mental hospital. Love those stories.

M'gawd, asylums and sanitarium used to be absolutely horrible... I'm not too far from Pennhurst which is shut down now obviously, but that shit was horrible... tons of folks who didn't even belong there.

Having a rough teenage life around this time and I had this song and fade to black back to back on a tape on both sides and listened to it all through 7-8 grade almost nonstop with a little creeping death to pick me up! Being baker acted many times I’m glad it just wasn’t in the 40’s, but 80’s was no fun either I can relate. No one would listen even if I was right. Forcing pills down my throat till I almost died from serotonin syndrome a rare thing. I’ve survived twice from it. And now allergic to all ssri meds and battling on my own.
This was their first song to get on the radio.
I wish Vin would let Sori react on her own to songs he's already heard.

@Scary Guy yeah back then i think right after the big4 tour is when Dave had his neck surgery and that's when they put a metal plate near his voice box in his neck to hold vertebrae together aka fusion, since then his voice changed, it can't be helped.
