My interpretation of this song is that your primitive brain is talking to the conscious part of you. You know, the subconcious impulses which are there to protect you and make you want to survive at all costs - there's no time for us to make absolute racional decisions about every single aspect of our lives, about every trivial thing that comes up everyday, so we have to rely on habits, on behaviors we are used to even though they may not be optimal. The instinctive and animalesque part of you is saying that they are what make you just as much as the conscious, racional and social part of you. Like "hey, i'm you, i'm what makes you keep going through extreme adversity, when you're traumatized and abandoned, when no one longer cares, i'm your pain, i put up these carefully constructed defensive psichological mechanisms, i'm your will to survive".

In the late 70's we had a "If you like rock/metal you have to hate punk and vice versa general consensus from the younger generation of which I was a part but I saw no reason to not enjoy both, and country, jazz, classical, folk, Blues, R&B, etc. When fans of a particular group say you can like this part of their catalog but not that part it's even more ridiculous and I ignore them even more. Close minded folks, sheesh. How dare anyone tell me what I should love and hate in music or any other art form. It's none of their business, it's my ears, my brain, my sensory pleasure, my choice. I never tell anyone what they HAVE to and NOT like. If they don't like it that's perfectly fine. That's their choice.

The reason why people dislike Black Album is that it was the moment they started to get away from thrash. To me, it's plain stupid. I love the Black Album, and I love Load and Reload. Ok, they are not thrash metal, I agree, but they are fantastic on their own right.
Sad but True is heavy as fuck, I loved how Sori was headbanging at the beginning because that's exactly the reaction I had the first time I listened to it. Wow, I just realized it's been like 28 years since then. I'm getting old fellas! xD

I always thought this song was about any kind of thing taking over your mind and over your actions, specially addiction, since James was going through alcoholism on that time. It's kind of the same message from Master of Puppets, but more subtle and open: drugs, alcohol, depression, etc, take over your mind, your habits, your life in general, they gain control over you and you can end up becoming (like the song says) his mask, his shelter, the one who is blamed and the one who pays the price, you are a mere puppet for your inner demon (whatever it is) and makes you feel like YOU are the one to blame for it. That final line 'I'm you' terrifies me, it's like you finally lost against your demon, he took over you and there's nothing left of you, only him.
Pretty open and relatable to anything, but however i feel like it has really dark lyrics.

The black album was my introduction to Metallica, I love this album. It's definitely not their original style but is still a great album. Most bands that last as long as Metallica has, go through style changes, maybe do a concept album somewhere along the way, change the way the write and think about music and lyrics. Some divide Metallica fans to classic Metallica fans and "Modern" Metallica fans, to me personally if you like Metallica only till JFA album, you're just not a Metallica fan, you're a casual Metallica listener, this band is genius, old albums, new albums, commercial albums, underground... every album they put out is a piece of art, to each his own and this is my humble opinion, but I think a band like Metallica can never be repeated and James Hetfield is one of the best Vocalists/lyricists/rythm guitar players that metal fans were ever lucky to witness.

Back when I was a christian I also thought I would be a bad person if I wasn't a believer, but now that I'm an atheist, I'm still the same guy. I have not gone bad. A lot of morals that Christians think are christian morals, actually have a secular origin.

I've always been a 'Tallica fan since I was a teen...now I'm 36 and been through a ton of shit in life. I was singing this to my friends in prison...they were whining about the jail situation and conditions. I quoted the lyrics from this song and we all laughed. Now I am out and coronavirus is a bad situation but I am optimistic. This song has cut me to the core. A lot of Metallica's greatness is Hetfields incredible brilliance in playing and vocals but especially his songwriting and lyrics. The power of the truth in this song hits hard.

This was a really fun and interesting rant you guys. Anyone ever born can relate to this perspective in the song. The only time we're actually pure and innocent is when we not born yet. As soon as we become grown enough act on our free will it's just a matter of time before darkness find us even if it's just a small act of something you shouldn't think, say or do. And from there on out it will just add up with time and the only question is how much you will be able to realize and admit to your faults I guess awarness and impove your ways of dealing and avoiding those darker tendencies and temptations for the better.

I always kind of thought that basically, the physical body takes the brunt of the impressions against you and the soul/mental side is the one working behind the scenes. Like your mind can convince you to do whatever, but your body is what people will see doing it. The body is the scapegoat for what the mind wants to execute.

The wrestler you're thinking of is The Undertaker, it was one of the handful of songs he used for a period of time while in the "American Badass" biker gimmick. (early 2000s) The song itself was a Kid Rock song (which, like most Kid Rock songs, was about how good Kid Rock is), but yeah, the riff, and pretty much the whole song (excluding the vocals), is indeed 'Sad But True'. Good spot!
You should check out the Metallica doco, i think it's a "Behind the Music" for the Black album. The tracks seem to be written and finished, without any vocals - James Hetfield then bangs out a vocal sound (eg; "Whoa O's and Yeah-eah's") and fits the words into the melody according to the available syllables. It's, different. :)
