I know a lot of people think metallica sold out with the black album, but I think Jason said it best. "Metallica sold out....every show"

Black album is great. Everything after is avg at best imo. If they "sold out"(depends on definition) it was with load. They clearly went after MORE RADIO friendly songs with load and failed to sell anywhere near the black album. Then had a failed attempt to return to thrash with st anger.
Imo. 5 consecutive classics to start career. After that they got rich, lazy, and wrote less inspired songs. I respect their right to change i just think the songs suck.
Great band, but i literally dont know 1 person that cares about Metallica post black album. Just saying...

I really liked (DM) it when it came out, but i tried listening a few months back and i couldn't get through it. easilt the best after 1991. Havent heard hard wired other than the thrashy single.

@@integrity101 the guys simply made the music they liked. In many interviews, they stated that they were listening to mostly rock music and its what influenced them at the time.
Selling out is making music to sell records. Metallica didn't need to do that. They did what any musician should. Make the music for you, not your fans.
Just because you start out as a thrash band, doesn't mean you have to end a thrash band.

    • @kitoyobeni1
      @kitoyobeni1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Sort of. They made a predetermined effort to over-simplify the songs from multiple riffs down to one or two, grabbed Motley Crue's producer, and even made a ballad. It was a pretty concerted effort to reach as many fans as possible. Sure, they couldn't pack any more riffs and changes into songs as they did on Justice, but it was their concept (or possibly Bob Rock's influence) to go as far as they did. Load took it another step further (to the point of changing their look to match).

Yeah when you surround yourself with certain music, especially songs like this that have been around forever, they become part of you and part of who you are. It is hard to imagine not having a song such as this in my life. It is even harder to even imagine anyone not knowing the songs. Haha..There was someone else that reacted to Nirvana's Smells like Teen Spirit. I mean like them or not, it is just a part of my life and the life of most people that know anything about music. I couldn't even imagine anyone under 75 or 80 not knowing the song. lol..But then I guess I am that way about other genres to some degree. Just funny how when something has been a part of you so long and had such an influence on the music industry in general, how there are people out there that have no clue about it.

I can't even begin to describe what I felt when I heard this song for the first time. I was still high on ...And Justice For All which is what I discovered Metallica from, it was their newest release back in '89 and I heard the band being mentioned all the time and I just knew from looking at the album cover and the artwork that they were heavy and badass. and then this song started to sound on the radio and I just remember thinking it was the freshest, most powerful, most cool thing in the world, I felt nobody could even understand how amazing and cool Metallica was and I couldn't wait to get the album, I remember I got the cassette, I had to buy it twice because some friend of mine stole my first, and then I bought it on CD maybe 2 or 3 times because I kept losing it. Anyway, a glorious and unforgettable moment, this song is perfection

If they do The Thing That Should Not Be I hope they do the trilogy of songs, similar to how they did The Unforgivens. IIRC, The Thing That Should Not Be is a song about Cthulhu, and there are two others: The Call of Ktulu, and Dream No More.

    Vin and Sori
Written by band members James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, and Kirk Hammett, this is about nightmares and things that go "bump" in the night. It has by far the most radio play of all of Metallica's songs. >>
James Hetfield's original lyric was about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (Crib Death), when a baby dies inexplicably in its crib. The line, "Off to never never land" was, "Disrupt the perfect family," and the "sandman" kills the baby.
Pretty gruesome stuff, so their producer Bob Rock convinced him to change it to make it more accessible and meaningful. The band had a policy of not commenting on each other's individual contributions, but Rock was an outsider and felt free to speak up. To his surprise, Hetfield took it well and altered the lyric accordingly.
Speaking with Uncut in 2007, Hetfield said: "I wanted more of the mental thing where this kid gets manipulated by what adults say. And you know when you wake up with that s--t in your eye? That's supposedly been put in there by the sandman to make you dream. So the guy in the song tells this little kid that and he kinda freaks. He can't sleep after that and it works the opposite way. Instead of a soothing thing, the table's turned."
The line in the chorus, "Take my hand, we're off to Never Never Land" is a reference to the children's story Peter Pan, as Peter lives in the magical world of Neverland. In this song, the Sandman lives in Never Never Land, and it is a much less pleasant place. >>

I think "Enter Sandman" is simpler than your analysis paints it. The song is from the child's perspective even though the lyrics are directed to the child, and so the singer takes on the parent's voice while they're present but then shifts into portraying the nightmare thoughts that take over once you're left alone in the dark. It's a good Halloween song, actually.

I have always thought that "Enter Sandman" responds to the same motivation that can be found in "Silent Lucidity", only "Enter Sandman" is darker and heavier. Being a father myself I have used both songs as guidance when my daughter was scared (which did not happen often). However, "Silent lucidity" can be used even when kids grow and become adults. I love heavy metal.

Childhood PTSD. It grows and develops with you and shapes your abilities to create to function normally. As a kid, you don’t have the words to describe horror happening or has happened.. but you can’t escape memory, usually. It effects sleep for sure. Involuntary Daytime thoughts. This one time I was having a problem with the thoughts in my mind and I was experiencing major anxiety although I didn’t know or understand that yet. I went to my room and lay down. As soon as I closed my eyes the thoughts I was having came into full view in technicolor. I immediately got up, left my room went hit the front door running. Ran all the way to the town park to the end of the pier and jumped right off and immediately my concern was about the life and death situation I found myself in. All thoughts and memories were gone. And as I got older the actions became more drastic to rid myself of that haunting/memory. PTSD is live memory. I have found that nothing really helps except a full on reassessment of my life and rebuilding my foundation that I stand on. Anyway I talk to much. It’s a great song and Metallica was always thought-provoking in a good way. 😘

I agree with Vin ..............having the kid say " there's nothing there' is way better psychologically then the parent saying there's nothing cause if one day there is something the kid might lose trust in the parents affirmations.
I as a kid was told monster stories by cousins and older siblings , its part of growing up . The older kid laughing at the younger kid . So yes , every night i'd check under my bed , keep my feet away from the sides of the bed etc . It's like a FUN innocent ritual performed from old to younger kids . Not like as if they said there's a pedophile or some nasty shit like that hiding in my closet..............there are limits .
Not knowing is a tough subject . It can benefit as what you dont know so thus you dont think about it so you dont fear or love it cause you dont know about it . Knowing , breaks down barriers and possibly ruins the beauty of perception but it's educational . Our minds are full of imagination and originality , but if you KNOW everything as facts your imagination is based on reality so it's blacl or white oriented instead of full colors .......make sense ?

Interesting. Those people who push dislike button are weird. Metallica (they are indeed legends etc) aren't supposed to be the band that every metalhead/listener must enjoy or worship. I think this type of song is some kind of threshold or stepping stone, when you are just getting into the genre. For others, more proficient listeners, this song might be really boring. But thats a fact, the longer Vin and Sori are making reactions, the harder metal music can surprise them, especially these mainstream songs definitely don't have a single chance.

Vin, not wanting to resort to violence, and not having to are 2 very different things. There is a saying that states "It is better to be a warrior in a time of peace than a farmer in a time of war" This is a paraphrase from memory and I'm not sure if it is Chinese or Japanese but I'm pretty sure its one of the two. Pacifism is an ideal that cannot always be kept

At first, seeing this one, I thought "meh" Enter Sandman. Then watching Vin laugh at the fact that Sori had never heard this song was funny, you almost have to go out of your way to have not heard this over the last 30 years. Watching Sori experience this song was comedy gold, when it hit "its just the beast under your bed". Discovering this album on my 13th birthday 5 days after release introduced me to Metallica and led me to discover the first 4 albums before it. Some of the best albums of my generation. Thanks for taking me back for a minute.

interesting point about adults dismissing children's fears:
in the beginning, the "snuffleupagus" on sesame street was a character that ONLY big bird ever saw.
big bird would strike up a conversation with snuffleupagus, then ask him to stick around so he could introduce him to his friends.
before big bird could return with his friends. snuffleupagus would wander away.
then big bird's friends would accuse him of making him up.
    -----
the show's writers abolished this recurring plot line, because it sent children a message that no one would believe them if they tried to go to an adult with their problems.
today, snuffleupagus is a regular character who interacts with all the other characters. (without mysteriously disappearing at inopportune times)

It is interesting because growing up in a Catholic household I was never taught that the Devil would listen to your fears, but I did have this mentality that if I thought of plausible things (car crashes, unexplained fires, or sudden explosions, etc.) than me just speaking it out loud would make it more likely to happen, but fantastical things (like demons, monsters, or undead) were not plausible so it didn't concern me talking about them. Likewise, I could 'speak' good fortune into the world or into my life by talking about good things. So even before I had an understanding of atheism, string theory, consciousness, or manifest destiny... I exhibited more belief in IT than I did the supernatural or divine, even as a child, growing up Catholic, and I didn't turn away from religion completely until after I was Confirmed.
