    It wouldn’t start because the coils were melted in the block, could of repaired all that and the engine would of ran just fine, it’s a Honda after all.

    I worked at a Honda dealership for 14 years, and ran the parts dept for 12 of those years. There was a defect in the block casting of early ('06 and I believe some '07) Civic R18s that caused the block to crack on the back side, towards the firewall. This caused a coolant leak, and engine overheating. If you look on the side of the block, you may be able to see the crack. We replaced TONS of these blocks under warranty. Other than those blocks, it is a very reliable engine. It doesn't have the potential for mods like the B or K series engines, but it's perfectly adequate for a daily driver.

    For those that don't know the Honda R18 is very similar to the Honda d series engines except it doesn't have performance VTEC on the camshaft the Honda R18 engine or the Honda R Series engines performance VTEC is in the intake manifold past 5,000 RPM a flap in the intake manifold will open up so that it uses a shorter intake runner

    The most likely reason it wouldn't start is that excessive heat warped the cylinder head, possibly also the block. Skimming the head would probably have gotten that engine running again. The soot on the pistons is normal, pistons tend not to melt, the gasket usually goes followed by the head warping. This guy seemed to be enthusiastic but the things he said would discourage me from having him fix my car 🤣.

    19426-RNA-A01 is the stamped steel gasket between the heater outlet and the head?, block?
    When it leaks it give the indication of a blown head gasket resulting in a broken/ split radiator. My gasket imprinted itself in the poor outlet casting. I filled the impression and pits with JB Weld and sanded it on glass. Worked fine after that…..but first a new radiator or 3 and every other coolant part replaced…. It was the last part of the coolant system I checked.

      @@MechanicalMalarkey Have seen these go 350,000+ on mileage. The biggest issue with the Civics of this era (8th gen) is the longevity of the AC compressors and door lock actuators. Occasionally the wiring harness under the passenger seat causes intermittent airbag lights on the dash, and of course the putrid design of the cruise control switch which no longer clicks in place and requires replacement of the steering wheel switches if the owner is not interested in jamming a coin into the switch to hold it on.

      It's a Civic, it's meant to be economical not fast. Even like that 145hp from a 1.8 NA engine In 2006 is impressive. Also, the thing gets 40+ mpg if you know how to drive it.

    • @theejoeylee
      @theejoeylee ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@514aam I can Average 42-44 MPG via Torque app, and calculating at the pump.
      The HP#s don't tell the whole story. It's the power curve, and this engine is peaky & low torque compared to other 4 cylinder engines. Even worse on a hot day. You need a big gap compared to modern cars to merge into traffic, They get impatient and start honking at you because you haven't pulled out because your car is slow as hell
