The full story behind Rory's guitar is that it was stolen off him and at the time the story got onto a crimewatch tv show in Ireland. The guy who stole it was probably afraid that he'd be caught after that so he chucked it into a field and it was lying there for a few days/ got rained on etc. before it was found and a lot of the wear was a result of that. There's a video on his official TH-cam channel with his nephew telling the story.
Mary I pretty much do what you do when in a guitar shop - pick one out and noodle up some Blues riffs. Gets me acquainted with the guitar. Love that Rory Sig Strat!
Sis, I will fall into a beautiful sleep now that I have heard this majestic finger work. You are the grooviest Gtar player I have had the opportunity to watch. Thank you.
You are not the worst player in the guitar store you are very different and your music is fresh. Is it possible that she does not know how good she is or is she just that modest. I wish she would do a video on her techniques on how she plays he picking hand is just crazy hard. Well it is crazy hard for me I can keep up with her fretting hand but people that play in "finger technique " sound so good to my ear. This is just one more reason why guitars are my favorite instrument there are so many techniques, styles, and sounds. There is not another instrument like it in my book and don't listen to people that say the guitar is dead. They just like creating a fear the guitar will always be alive and change to keep up with new music
Marlon Artsyrobo I think what Mary meant is that she was "the worst player at Guitar Center" because she plays slower pieces with talent and feeling, rather than jerking off at 300bpm and pretending to be some sort of Slash/Eddie Van Halen hybrid
Hey Mary! I’m rather playing rough metal style, but it’s been very pleasant sounding what you played right here, despite the bad strings. Nice tone in your fingers. Might be some of the nicest bars of guitar sound they’ve heard in this store in years!
The Guitar Center stores in the Los Angeles area, those I've visited in Hollywood, Sherman Oaks and Northridge, are almost always busy. So many musicians out here! I often bump into known players, too. Jam sessions break out at any time. Like, someone will be fooling around with a chord sequence and someone across the room starts soloing over it. Dudes checking out amps and pedals crank away...
Love this video... for anyone who plays (or wants to get started) going into a shop is like a wonderland. GC might not be for ultra pros, but my local on here in CA is always a cool spot, they're friendly & you can play all you want - maybe a video gets made in the background too
I always try for mom & pop shops or legacy non-chain stores, but often one can find some REMARKABLE bargains at Guitar Center, and Sweetwater has great prices & excellent customer service if you already know what you’re looking for. No shame in using these vendors. 🤟🪘🥁🎸🎤
Me when i go to a guitar shop- 1. Forget to play anything other than sunshine of your love and stairway. 2. Play sunshine of your love cos i know ppl don’t like stairway. 3. Leave
I always said if I won the Lottery, the first thing i'd buy is the Rory Gallagher Strat... Shadow Play FTW. Best looking guitar Fender ever produced!!!
Just discovered your channel yesterday. Love your style of playing. I play for some artists in Nashville, and as I’ve gotten older, I’ve found that less really is more. You don’t have to shred all of the time to sound great. It’s about what’s going to be best for the song. Keep it up! I just subscribed.
Rory’s guitar 🎸 initially got to be so worn when someone stole it after a gig after then, because it was national media news, left it somewhere out in the open - and it got well and truly rained on
Thanks Mary. Took your advice and visited Rudy’s in Broom Street NYC all the way from Cardiff in Wales 👍 played a beautiful Telecaster. They were so lovely in there. Got the tee shirt too. Cool.
When I walk into guitar center there's always someone else playing counter to me so i have to give up . Yes , it would be nice to go into a booth or wear headphones .
Love the soft touch of your playing Mary, I'd like to walk into a guitar store and hear someone play soft groovy stuff like you do instead of the tapping/shredding madness! :D
I think I would much rather listen to you playing in a guitar store Mary. Shredders are two a penny. You play with such great feel and style it's always a pleasure to listen to you. Oh and I once had a sparkly pink champagne Charvel...yeah I have no idea why but seemed like a good idea at the time. I think I very quickly traded it in for a Peavey 2x12 combo for my then girlfriend. Much better decision :)
Often when in a music store especially one like that one its like being a kid in a candy store. That Guitar Center is bigger and busier than the one near me where i live in Las Vegas Nevada. Every guitar in your hands no matter what it is - it sounds like gold. A friend of mine and his father used to own a music store guitar shop next to the kung fu studio i used to go to train at when i was younger. I would hang out there for hours.
I was in that GC a year ago before a gig, there was a gold sparkle over sunburst tele that’s still there apparently. Sort of sad, I hope that thing finds a home! Edit: yes, THATS the one! at 9:56
I think Rorys guitar was stolen at one point and was found in a snowy ditch and thats the big reason why it was so relict. Rorys strat was the first import one in Ireland I believe.
What a remarkable personality...Mary Spender...you have "natural cool" !! I love your "serious face" when you are in your professional artistic focus on the instrument you are playing. It was so enjoyable to just "hang" with you in New York (or where ever...I guess you brighten up ANY guitar shop!) The guy who stole it was probably afraid that he'd be caught after that so he chucked it into a field and it was lying there for a few days/ got rained on etc. before it was found and a lot of the wear was a result of that. There's a video on his official TH-cam channel with his nephew telling the story.
I hope my three daughters grow up to be as cool as you. Major talent.
Dude that walked in was thinking ‘ Holy shit this chick can play’ so he didn’t pick a guitar up
Great Video Mary
That groovy part at 8:40 was fireeeee
"I'm the worst player at guitar center" *proceeds to play some cool stuff*
aah great video btw!
Marlon Artsyrobo I think what Mary meant is that she was "the worst player at Guitar Center" because she plays slower pieces with talent and feeling, rather than jerking off at 300bpm and pretending to be some sort of Slash/Eddie Van Halen hybrid
Aah true, I jus thought it sound funny haha
Yeah listening to shredding a lot in guitar stores gets annoying to me
More like the best player at most guitar shops, I’d say!
@Paul Bishop I do think she was joking about not succumbing to technical guitar wankery.
Your soul is on the tips of your fingers. Great sound.
You never mentioned the price of the Rory guitar . . It had the orange tag on it but we couldn’t see it lol
I like what you were playing just before you started talking about making up the baseline.
Hey Mary! I’m rather playing rough metal style, but it’s been very pleasant sounding what you played right here, despite the bad strings. Nice tone in your fingers. Might be some of the nicest bars of guitar sound they’ve heard in this store in years!
What happens when I walk into a guitar store:
Every one starts tearing their tshirts and then proceed to scream my name in agony.
I you walked into my buddies store he would drop to his knees in worship. He loves your playing.
3. Leave
So true
2 - very wise
I always said if I won the Lottery, the first thing i'd buy is the Rory Gallagher Strat... Shadow Play FTW. Best looking guitar Fender ever produced!!!
If you think i am gonna fall for the hot chick playing a guitar trick and make me watch this until the end......you would be right ....Peace.
Mary Spender You are GREAT in improvisation
9:05 couldn't help but notice the lady behind you tapping her feet thinking "ooo this is groovy"
Well, when I walk into a guitar store I get depressive because I cant even afford the cheap ones :P
I think that all your problems could be solved by just making more money
What Happens When I Walk Into A Guitar Center Store?
I spend a lot of time tuning guitars
You are a hero sir!
do you take a rag and purell to disinfect the strings?
MARY: "What Happens When I Walk Into A Guitar Store"?
MARY: "I become a big Spender!"
Genius.
Lmao
ah come on
THATS FUNNY KID IN A CANDY SHOP
"The minute she walked in the joint."
I happen to love your playing and your voice. Just lovely. Thank you.
OMG I fell in love with your voice
OMG, that Sweet Child O' mine part was perfect. That was totally me when I was learning guitar.
Rory’s guitar 🎸 initially got to be so worn when someone stole it after a gig after then, because it was national media news, left it somewhere out in the open - and it got well and truly rained on
That Rory tribute guitar is awesome. I enjoy them so much that I bought two. Rock on Mary. Peace
Mary,You have an amazing tone to your singing ,also great writing skills.great work
Go on Mary!....break into Bullfrog Blues or Messin' with the kid.....There's got to be an AC30 there somewhere!
When I walk into a guitar shop, they instantly rub their hands together and start flicking through holiday brochures!😆.
I usually have 3 or 4 pints before I go in and then rock out with out a care.
i probably would leave the shop with that Rory Custom Shop and with a big hole in my wallet!
3 or 4 pints and i'd buy something i didn't need or already had.!
Thanks Mary. Took your advice and visited Rudy’s in Broom Street NYC all the way from Cardiff in Wales 👍 played a beautiful Telecaster. They were so lovely in there.
Got the tee shirt too. Cool.
I am so glad I found your you tube channel, I enjoy watching and learning from you
When I walk into guitar center there's always someone else playing counter to me so i have to give up . Yes , it would be nice to go into a booth or wear headphones .
i like the way you were playing - more than than then the speed demons.
"the worse guitar player in the shop..." well, i could listen to your guitar play for the whole day - you've a wonderful touch
Love the soft touch of your playing Mary, I'd like to walk into a guitar store and hear someone play soft groovy stuff like you do instead of the tapping/shredding madness! :D
I love you Mary. You are a glass of fresh water in the middle of the desert. Thanks for being there, God bless you.
Get a room
Why would I want a room? What has that go to do with guitars?
Corrie De Beer
what are you 14?? Shut up and go back to your Pokémon videos.
Is it Jared Dines playing Sweet Child for his next comedy video?!?
"Comedy"
She's probably better than you are.
"I'm the worst guitar player in a guitar store"
She's actually amazing and better than anything I could play ever!
It's not about playing what THEY want, it's about playing what YOU want. Hard to tell tonality of a guitar when you're speed picking.
I want to get lost in the 7:50 to 9:50 segment of this vid! Love the groove. Checkin' out your channel now! Thanks for sharing this.
Hah hah, recognized you immediately for that 'Death Metal' version of Sultans of Swing!😁 Great video Mary, thanks!😍👍
What happens when I walk into a guitar store?
Nothing really...I'm left handed.
I was in that GC a year ago before a gig, there was a gold sparkle over sunburst tele that’s still there apparently. Sort of sad, I hope that thing finds a home!
Edit: yes, THATS the one! at 9:56
At $7000 it is going to be waiting quite a while for the perfect stockbroker or plastic surgeon to happen along and take it home.
Rhett Shull thats a pretty specific color combo and a pretty hefty price tag. Going to take a specific person to pull the trigger on it
Rhett, your love of sparkles is not shared by all. That being said, I’d have your pink novo over a gold sparkle tele. And it ain’t 7k
I do have a thing for sparkly guitars, its true.
Get the Novo lads to make you a signature model in lime green sparkle over gold or something. That'd be rad.
Fun to watch! Very seldom do I hear a someone play a classic guitar riff in a guitar store. Thank you for that!
I think Rorys guitar was stolen at one point and was found in a snowy ditch and thats the big reason why it was so relict. Rorys strat was the first import one in Ireland I believe.
What happens when I got to a Guitar center? I head straight for the drums.
Is that riff around 8:15 your own composition? Sounds awesome! 😍
What a remarkable personality...Mary Spender...you have "natural cool" !! I love your "serious face" when you are in your professional artistic focus on the instrument you are playing. It was so enjoyable to just "hang" with you in New York (or where ever...I guess you brighten up ANY guitar shop!) Just an observation from an old guy with terminal curmudgeonitis (I'm turning into a grumpy old man)
Soooo much talent! Love it!
