🔥🔥🔥🔥FIRE!!! One of the greatest performances ever. Burton is one of the greatest singers ever. These Eyes is another great song one of my favorite songs ever
On You Tube, a guy has a channel called the Professor of Rock. He highlights rock songs and how they were made. He interviewed the lead sing of this band about this song. He said the song was improvised on stage without the band knowing what they were playing. After they finished, they said, "hey, that was pretty good". A guy in the audience recorded it. They got the recording from the guy to see what they improvised, and they did not change much in the studio recording.
I remember when Lenny Kravitz covered this song in the 90s. It was really weird that year. Suddenly everyone was jamming this song for Independence Day when the song is actually a protest song.
Mitch I so much agree with you, to watch her move to the music is so cool to me, she is absolutely beautiful and to listen to her talk blows me away. Simply Amazing
The story about this song was that Burton was late getting on stage, so the band played a riff while waiting for him. Well Burton got on stage and started coming out with lines. If I remember correctly, they tracked down a guy that recorded the performance to be able to remind them of how it went.
Love it! So many memories. I saw The Guess Who play in the USA near the border with Canada. Total hippie-fest. Car surfing in a farm field an make a campfire wherever. Great people.
I have the same feeling when it comes to live versions. I sometimes think they're not going to be as good as the record but I love it when I'm pleasantly surprised. Everyone was in fine form and the vocals were fire!
Hi Miss Rebeka. !!! Fantastic song indeed , you might Enjoy the Hollies Long Cool woman in A Black Dress 👗 as well !! Yet for My song of the Day Just for you is from 1969 and by The Moody Blues ( Nights in White Satin ) 🌞🥴🥴🥴🥴🥴 As Always you know I have Illuminated the like button 🔘 😁
When I first heard this song back in the spring of 1970 I knew right off the bat it was 🔥🔥🔥🔥. Loved it then, still do. Glad u dug this so much. THESE EYES their first recording I believe is great!!!! Worth checking out.
This song was written as anti Vietnam song, Canada did not enter the Vietnam war although Canadian men enlisted! All the great bands of the time wrote anti war songs because of the times. Burton Cummings a Canadian vocal legend. Thank you for your reaction ✌🏻
It is not an Vietnam protest song. Burton Cummings said that he thought American women grew up faster and that made them dangerous. So when he said,”American woman, stay away from me”, he was actually saying that her preferred Canadian women.
No. The american woman was on the cover of the original album. The Statue of Liberty. Everything else said (there were a lot of different things said) were just a smoke screen to keep coming in for recordings and concert dates.
I love your reaction. The band is from my home Of Winnipeg. I have met BC 4 times. But they were all unofficial (i.e. escorting to his dressing room at a telethon) And I have seen them live at least 4 times. They still rock.
Learn something new everyday I didn't know they were Canadian like me and yeah I thought they were there look also surprised me I thought they were hippies. Great reaction Rebecca and I love your hair today 😍
Burton Cummings is a phenomenal singer and the band had different appearances at different times, I've seen Burton with long hair before and also you have to remember that Austin City Limits is never going to be as big and loud and rocking as an actual real concert. And he may have had that in mind about American women but the reality is it's largely a metaphor for what was starting to really seem like what was going wrong in the world at the time, with the Vietnam War and the military-industrial complex and just incredible hereditary poverty compounding in the ghettos, all because of misplaced priorities.
I miss Burt Sugarman's Midnight Special. There weren't very many artists that just lip synced the radio version unlike American Bandstand and Soul Train.
Wow excellent reaction love this band this was a protest song about the Vietnam war and they were ready to leave the U.S.🤣They actually cleaned up,for this pictures I saw they all had long hair🤣 anyhow later Beautiful. Well I guess I was wrong always heard it was a protest song against the American war machine🤔guess I should wait till the end to comment 🤣
Just Love your enthusiasm Beautiful Rebekah, Wish I had a chance to see a concert of your choice with you.. Guns'N'Roses are coming to Fenway Park in Boston this September.. Hello from New Hampshire U.S.A 😘
There have been two interpretations by two different band members of The Guess Who - Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman The Guess Who are Canadian, and Burton Cummings (the song's lyricist) insists it has nothing to do with American pride. "What was on my mind was that girls in the States seemed to get older quicker than our girls and that made them, well, dangerous," Cummings told the Toronto Star in 2014. "When I said 'American woman, stay away from me,' I really meant 'Canadian woman, I prefer you.' It was all a happy accident." (as Rebaka showed, but also...) Randy Bachman called "American Woman" an "antiwar protest song," explaining that when they came up with it on stage, both the band and the audience had a problem with the Vietnam War. Said Bachman: "We had been touring the States. This was the late '60s, they tried to draft us, send us to Vietnam. We were back in Canada, playing in the safety of Canada where the dance is full of draft dodgers who've all left the States." Source: Songfacts
Who would have known, this song is also good to blow dry your hair to 🤪 The song works because it has a hook, it doesn't pussy foot around and just gets right to the point. I'm sure it offended lot of people but those people live to be offended.
Midnight Special is loaded with talent Back in the day music is just better there are so many performances and artist you wouldn't believe it. The man that introduced the next band was woufe Man Jack, The show came on late They say because of the kids. Be cool Stay Safe!!!
Rebeka This song is anti war song. Members of Guess Who are Canadians. Vietnam War was going on when song released. US was doing the draft for the war. Guess Who were worried that US going to draft them because members were in their 20's
Can't go wrong with The Guess Who you should do a reaction on the band The Blood Sweat and Tears I'm pretty sure they have some live performances out there
Hi Rebecka, to hear the definitive version of this song, hear them Live at the Paramount, their live album from the early 70s, American Woman was on the same side as Trucking Off Across the Sky, they are part of the same jam that takes up a side of the old LP record. It is well worth hearing, 20 minutes of the Guess Who at their very best, it's well worth listening to, even just for your own musical education and not as a reaction. That is one of the best live sides of music you will ever hear. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
It's great to see you discovering this amazing music for the first time. I watched all of the Midnight Special episodes when they first aired, along with Don Kirchner's Rock Concert. Some of the greatest music ever written and performed, back when artists wrote, played and sang their own music. No auto-tune or tricks. But I wasn't a fan of the music videos where bands lip-synched to the original tracks, though they had their place and served a purpose.
Next ones to react to Queensryche - Take Hold of the Flame (Live in Tokyo), Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name (Live Beast Over Hammersmith 1982), Alter Bridge - Blackbird (Live at Amsterdam), Frank Marino - Somethings Comin Our Way (Live at Agora Theatre),

American woman is all about the American politics and government And that's why you'll never see the guests who in the hall of fame because of that American government doesn't like to be bashed apparently

That’s how I heard it as well- totally improvised on stage
"Awww, give me The Guess Who.
C'mon. They got the *courage* to *be* drunken buffoons, which MAKES them POETIC."
Burton has some great songs, Tell it to them Gently, and Stand tall are a couple of my favs, he has a great voice
