For a complete 180 on this band try “These Eyes” Burton Cummings has a great voice. The guitar players formed The BachmanTurner Overdrive after theGuess Who broke up.. they had a few big hits you might want to try.
Reread your post. The Guess Who did not break up until many years later. They had the hits Share the Land, Hand Me Down World, Hang on to Your Life, Albert Flasher, Rain Dance, Star Baby, Clap for the Wolfman and Dancin' Fool after Randy Bachman left.
Great group, I'd suggest either "Undun" or "These Eyes" to hear what he can do with a more tender song. Burton Cummings had one of the greatest voices of all time IMHO.
Great band. Burton Cummings voice is amazing. Saw a video of him and Randy Bachman doing this song together last year and his voice is still the same at 70+ years old. "Undun" and "No Time" are just a couple of their many great songs worth a listen.
Welcome back on the Canadian train!!!!!! In case you have not figured it out yet, Winters are cold and the nights are long in Canada, so we spend lots of time learning things we can do inside.
I watched Midnight Special all the time back in the day. It was THE showcase for musical artists! No videos then (except for the very odd one made to show on some variety special).
This song needs context. This was written as a part of the anti-war movement around Vietnam. This band was very serious about their playing. Other songs will show off how versatile they are.
Great version to react to! Burton Cummings is an amazing singer who just got better with age. Check out some of his solo stuff like Stand Tall or Break it to them gently live later in his career. He had a tour where it was just him and his piano that has some amazing versions of long loved songs.
Oh My Goodness!!!! YOU ARE GOING TO LIKE THIS GROUP!!! This group.....The Guess Who were one of the gods of Rock n' Roll next to Led Zeppelin...I want you to react to "No Time" by Guess Who. And this is not a good version of the Guess Who.....a lot is missing like that Kickass intro on the album....listen to the long version of this song(audio) on this album!!!
The explanation I remember is that the Canadian group here, didnt want to be caught up in America s draft. Hence,American woman, alias the statue of liberty. Burton Cummings voice was freaking wonderful.
Yep you got it the "Woman" is America herself. Now go back and re read the lyrics and they make complete sense, but totally different then the this is a romance song about not wanting American Women. Greatest Anti Vietnam War song. For instance the American Woman going to mess your mind. Is no we are not going to war with you and slaughter our Young Men so your Military Complex can make Millions. We are going to save 10,000's of your young men by giving them a safe haven. The American Leadership could not believe we would not do as we were told.
There's a phenomenal, 14- minute version of American Woman on TH-cam (with Bachman on guitar), and the best EVER freestyle jamming/vocals I've ever heard this group perform! In it, they are all much older...definitely worth a watch if you're a fan!
Songs from this era, when there was no internet, and well before MTV was 24 hour music, only have videos if concerts were filmed or they were on a tv show like this.
Burton Cummings dressed up for this. His early tv appearances were in a hockey shirt or flannel and jeans. But the voice was always amazing. “UnDun” or “These Eyes” or “Laughing” or “Dancing Fool” or “New Mother Nature / No Sugar Tonight”
LMAO!!!! Hahahaha...lol....hahahaha....this is why I like watching you....soooo much info about mikes and instruments.....because everything was as raw as it was back then.....that was the quality of that day...hahahaha....wow.....Amazing......I am soooo glad you appreciate talent.....
You must hear the studio version. The "buh-bye"s at the end are even better. What a voice. But I had no idea he looked like this! I thought he was a long-haired hippie!
No Sugar Tonight is awesome. Burton Cummings has some solo stuff as well, "Your Back Yard" and "My Own way to Rock" for starters....and you should hear him on the keys in those songs!
Some of the greatest performances ever done came from the "Midnight Special". This was one of the few forums that artists had to get seen back then, so everyone brought their "A" game.
He’s talking about this country. This is a great performance. There are a ton of great performances on The Midnight Special. Soul music also. I own all the episodes.
The absolute best in-concert version of this song is on their “Live at the Paramount” album which goes over 15 minutes and features some great scat singing by Burton.
Lenny Kravitz did a cover of this song . It is symbolic of young men evading the draft and ging to Canada during the later period of the Vietnam war. Loved this group as a teen.
Loving all your choices!! 👍🏽❤ 1st concert ever was War, Wet Willy and The Guess Who, 13y young, haven't stop yet!! Venture through this rabbit hole please!!
What a version ...what a voice ! Burton Cummings had utter control and pitch flexibility . No sense that it was going to go wonky any time soon ...projects next level confidence .
Ah, those 70's threads. Those 70's white patent leather shoes. And - Burton Cummings voice, one of the best in rock. I was a teenager in the 70s - I had those clothes. I don't anymore...
Excellent band. Cummings is a genius. “Green Eyed Lady” Another great artist in that period or earlier is Johnny Rivers. A lot of hits. “Rocking Pneumonia And The Boogie-woogie flu”.
Check out the studio version of this song sometime too. It's great. Stellar musicians. Believe it or not this is the first time I have seen this Midnight Special clip too! I did see Burton Cummings perform with Ringo Starr and his All Star Band in 1992! When they broke into American Woman the crowd went wild. Good show. Thanks for this.
so my childhood family game was guessing which artist sang the song on the radio. My mom was terrible at it, we always had to give her hints. She always would get The Guess Who after we told her it was "The Canadian Band". Undun and "No Sugar/New Mother Nature' are probably my favorites of theirs
Burton Cummings is a world class vocalist. As far as mics go, he is using a Shure SM58. It's a hundred dollar mic (now), but there are still many singers who still choose that mic for stage use because it gives a good vocal sound and it's built like a tank. I have sworn by them myself for decades now. But even the best, most expensive mic in the world doesn't have a turn up the talent knob on it, LOL. Hand Me Down World, Bus Rider, Share the Land, No Time... these are some more awesome tracks from this fantastic Canadian band.
Hi Wilburn, When I look at the list that you selected to listen and react to, you have chosen the best of the best of classic rock. Amazing. If you want to hear Burton Cummings really belt it out, I highly recommend you get ahold of: “The Guess Who LIVE,” “Live at the Paramount”. It’s utterly fantastic.
Randy Bachmann, one of the most underrated guitarist in rock, but more importantly one of the nicest people, sincerely a good dude to ever walk the earth
This is a great group and I haven't seen this version. But I do like your reactions to live videos, because you noticed many things and educate me. Lenny Kravitz did a cover of this song that was used in one of the Austin Powers movies.
This is the single version. No surprise there but you should listen to the album version and the live version from their 2000 reunion tour. Just search TH-cam for "American Woman live Winnipeg 2000." That entire tour "The Guess Who Running Back Thru Canada" is available on TH-cam.
You should watch The Midnight Special, every performance that the copyright people will allow. Tons of great bands. You could make a whole series just reacting to that. P.S. I'm liking and subscribing
Actually, that is a Shure SM58 microphone. That mic currently sells for around $150 and still is one of the gold standard vocal mics in use to this day and has hardly changed since this video was recorded. What probably has changed though is the back end processing which then would have been highly analogue (old circuit and possibly tube technology) vs. today's digital (computer) processing. Having said that, his voice would sound great on any mic.
Interesting to see them post - Randy Bachman. I think that guitarist is named Kurt Winter? Canadians can correct me. And Burton… All dressed up. I’m thinking that this may be a good seven years after the song was written? Still good, but possible that earlier versions had more energy.
Bachman left after American Woman was released in 1970. He had converted to Mormonism. Later in the ‘70s, Bachman Turner Overdrive had huge hit, Taking Care of Business. Chod, that’s one for you to react to.
Yes the guitarist is Kurt Winter. He joined after Randy Bachman left the band in 1971. Guess Who Live at the Paramount is a great album with this lineup.
This was a protest song and 'American Woman' was a metaphor for the US government, US foreign policy, and US aggression overseas. The song resonated with Canadians but also with Americans critical of their own government. It was a risky move by The Guess Who as they're Canadian and risked being barred from the United States.
Great performance. The only thing your missing is the opening chords hit so much harder on the album version. Love that it was enough to get up there on stage and just be a great performer. Half these guys wouldn't survive the MTV generation just based on image.
I've been buying and using Salads Cymbals, made in Columbia, South Carolina. Great sound at a great price. I have The Nemesis line. They have 8 lines of cymbal styles. Great customer service and a trade win program if you wanna unload unwanted gear.
The vocal of playing of this performance sound really close to the studio recording they were just another band in the 70s I like but even average bands were elite by today's standards.
THE GUESS WHO - SHAKIN ALL OVER... Quivers down my back bone. I've got the shakes down the kneebone. yeah' having the tremors in the thighbone. "Shakin' all over"
They were invited to and played at the Nixon Whitehouse. However, the First Lady had a stipulation for reasons I don't know that they couldn't play this song. I strongly suggest you react to their song "These Eyes".
I have a 2008 Gibson Custom Shop ES-339 (smaller version of 335) figured top, its worth about $2200USD used... Kurt Winter's guitar a 1960's Gibson ES335TDC goes for the low low price of.... $4000-$30,000USD depending on condition, year and history.... and new around $6000...
Nice to see a truly live performance by this iconic Canadian band! Burton Cummings is an excellent vocalist and Randy Bachman an amazing guitariist. They have so many songs that are pure gold! No Time, Laughin', Undun, Sour Suite, No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature, Share The Land, Albert Flasher, Life In the Bloodstream, These Eyes, Hand Me Down World, Glamour Boy, Guns Guns Guns and on it goes from there!
Burton Cummings... "Break it to Them Gently", "Stand Tall," "Your Back yard," "My Own Way to Rock," "Fine State of Affairs" Bachman Turner Overdrive (BTO) Takin' Care of Business, You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet,
I like Alanis Morrisette on David Letterman using the mic with ‘You Oughta Know’. The live version with Randy improvising is great even though the original and this version feature a better Burton.
Once again- another Midnight Special classic! We were spoiled with riches...live music with no autotune.
They found singers able to stay in key--fancy that!
So true. Got to listen to real talent every week. We were
I saw some really good performances on that show.
Next up: "These Eyes," "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature" (they had two half-songs in the same key and stitched them together), "No Time."
This! (And add 'Undun')
Please note that you should do the studio version of No Sugar Tonight. It's a work of art.
@@martinsmusic1724 Chod , I bet you will really like Undun it has a jazz feel to it.

shoot...I totally forgot about BTO! My first ever live concert...
I meant to say "I reread your post". I wasn't telling you to "reread your post".
Man, we were lucky to grow up with this. Lenny Kravitz redid this song in the 90s, but I love the original best. Burton Cummings has an awesome voice.
Got to do These Eyes next. Yes for sure !
Studio version
We were so blessed in the 60’s and 70’s, watching midnight special in the 70’s and great music being released non stop

Midnight Special and American Bandstand.
Great group, I'd suggest either "Undun" or "These Eyes" to hear what he can do with a more tender song. Burton Cummings had one of the greatest voices of all time IMHO.
Another vote for These Eyes. Also no sugar tonight, all their songs are great.
