@@johnszczepanek9076 Well, kinda, but not really. He told the stories from his perspective & artists in question had an issue. Plus, in true Canadian fashion, anything that might be popular (King of Kensington, Seeing Things, Degrassi (all 4 editions) & Corner Gas) get cancelled just as they are breaking into the US market. I've never understood this logic, but it happens in TV & music repeatedly up here. Why???? Randy still runs Vinyl Tap on a Toronto radio station, from the last I heard

It’s not a joke, its a commercial enterprise to make money exploiting the public’s interest in Rock and Roll.
In fact, it is a perfect testament to the Music Industry and the exploitation of Rock and Roll. So everyone in the HOF are the ones they can get people to want to come and see. Some are great bands, but only if they were also commercial successes. Some are just great commercial successes.
If you wanted a HOF of bands that embodied the true spirit of Rock and Roll instead of the commercialization of Rock and Roll, it would fail. Because it would be, by its very nature, a sell out. Just like the vast majority of bands who wanted desperately to “make it big” with commercial success instead of striving for greatness for the pure love of the music.
So no, the HOF is a perfect representation of the exploitation of Rock and Roll and how the people with the money make the rules.

I remember back in the 1970s, a DJ on a popular radio station I loved, played a B.T.O. song but called them Bachman Turner Overweight, and continued to rag on their appearance. Personally, I thought they were a good-looking group of dudes.

To listen to Randy’s description of how they arrived at this song he still has the enthusiasm of teenager when describing it . That’s refreshing as a lot of artists seem to grow to hate their hits. It’s quite obvious he still has a love for the craft. I've heard Paul McCartney has had so many experiences (LSD, maybe?) that he doesn't know reality from fantasy after all these years. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, even though his three bandmates swore he was addled.
Randy Bachman's Mormon underpinnings bring truth to everything he says...even to the point of creating the Bachman-Turner Overdrive from the ruins of Brave Belt, just to show his contemporaries that stone-cold-sober rockers could beat the best. "Hey You" was his not-so-subtle dig at his former bandmate Burton Cummings - who'd previously stated, publicly, that "a bunch of Bible-thumpers" NEVER would achieve success in the rock-&-roll world.
I've stumbled upon a website wherein I can listen to Bachman's "Vinyl Tap" archived broadcasts whenever I please. I agree with Mr. Simpson - Bachman is a storyteller for the ages. I'm also pleased to see that Messrs Cummings and Bachman have repaired their friendship. Also, kinda curious to see what happens with their joint lawsuit against Messrs Peterson and Kale, regarding the right to perform their own works on stage in concert.

about 7 years ago our label had a CMW showcase at a dingy little punk club in Toronto. All of the bands were more of a smooth synth-pop, really light stuff except us, who were blasting trebly amps and head banging. Right before we got on stage someone said "holy crap that's Randy Bachman". He stood near the bar watching our set and didn't move an inch the whole set. It was an awful show and kind of hilarious that THAT was the one he saw. Oh well ...

Or cared? It was the 70s, right?) I still love listening to the mash-up of these two songs, in the car, windows down, volume all the way up. Both of these guys, and their bands, are treasures. I interviewed Burton on his first tour, have seen them together, with BTO, etc. But I introduced my father, then 79, to Burton in 1985 backstage. I came back 10 minutes later and they're talking about Irish history. Before then my dad said all modern (post-1920s) music was "screaming". Afterward, he enjoyed listening to anything by Burton Cummings and totally changed his mind on modern singing and music. He said to me "he can really sing" -- he had been turned off by Sinatra, "he just talks"... Thanks for giving Randy and Burton their due here. I know these guys years in and out and haven't heard you get anything wrong, while hearing new stuff and going to the horses's mouth for the facts. Solid. Led Zeppelin, Beatles of course. Too many to name. So many concerts with the best bands playing around Southern California. In 1970 started my amazing vinyl collection to go along with my sisters. I could go on, but won't. 💚🎶

Amazing how they came to have a great hit like No Sugar Tonight and American Woman. Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings has an amazing ability to just be inspired by 2 events in their lives and make hit songs out of them. One by seeing a bear of a man get ripped apart by a woman and just make a hit up on the spot. Truly a great musical talent from these men. My hat is off to them both.

I grew on a farm in NW North Dakota about a mile from the Canadian border. I was actually born in Estevan Sask. which is about 15 miles away so I have strong ties to Canada. Regina Sask. was 90 miles away and had an awesome radio station CK62 which played rock and roll, compared to the American side where you could only get CW music that came in decent. CK62 was a great station, and if I remember right they had to play a certain percentage of Canadian music every hour and that included British Invasion music as well. So I listened to the Guess Who pretty much all during high school and college, along with all the rest of the Canadian musicians. The Guess Who were my favorite group by far, and our garage band played some of their tunes but nowhere near the talent they had of course. I was saddened when they broke up, and I guess there was some turmoil in the band at the time. Randy then formed BTO, and they were great, with Taking Care of Business being my all time favorite Rock song of all time.
When the Guess Who got back together, they played their first concert at the new Grand Forks football stadium, and not long after played at a great little 3 Day concert called Rockin the Hills also in North Dakota that I was in the front row to see. They seemed to be having a great time and they put on one Hell of a Show. I remember Burton introducing Randy playing Taking Care of Business as the greatest rock song ever written so I am thinking they buried the hachet and got along again.
There is a lot of great Canadian talent out there also like Rush, Bryan Adams, Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young, to name a few. I think the Rocking Roll Hall of Fame should follow the will of the people on who gets in, not being blocked be individuals who have some kind of Boner against a group,or individual. Let the people decide! Hell we buy the records, right? The Guess Who have sold Millions of records and deserve a place in the Hall of Fame, BTO should be in there as well as Randy and Burton as songwriters and individuals. The real tragedy is some of their members have passed away, and will never get a chance to be honored while alive. That is what really sucks….

I remembered some of the songs from my childhood, including American Woman, but when I really discovered The Guess Who I was blown away and they became one of my favorite bands of all time. It's hard to verbalize what I experienced beyond a lot of cookie-cutter compliments/praise, but there was such originality there, and their sound was so distinctive, especially with Burton's voice. I do not know were he is at religiously in 2024, but in fall, 1977, at Brigham Young University, I was 18 years old and heard Randy speak about his life and conversion to Mormonism. Absolutely spellbinding, charismatic storyteller. Of course, I was enthralled. I've loved The Guess Who since I was 14. He had a second act with BTO that wasn't exactly chopped liver. I remember that he said he knew Elvis, and invited him to come spend some time with him in Canada, but Elvis died before that could happen. I remember he also told a story about his friendship with Olive Osmond, mother of the performing siblings. He also told the story about how he kicked his own brother Tim, out of BTO for drug usage. After he was done talking, I walked up to the stage to ask him to autograph the cover from my cassette recording of "BTO's Greatest Hits." As he was siging it, he said, "Man, that's a good album". I held onto it for years until I fianlly lost it to the dust bin of history. No Sugar Tonight" one of my all time favorite songs. "American Woman" guitar riff is one of the most recognizeable ever. Absolutely has to up there with "Satisfaction", "Sunshine of Your Love" et. al. So interesting to hear about it being such a fluke. RIP to the early departures of Tim and Robin Bachman.

I hadn't given much thought to The Guess Who, but around 1982, I had a roommate who was really into the quality of music... He sort of gave me a tutorial on how Burton Cummings used his voice on American Woman and other songs. Pointing out how, in his opinion, Cummings had the greatest voice in the Rock world.
It changed how I heard music, and my appreciation for music... When I turned 14, Bachman Turner Overdrive was performing at the Cow Palace. I begged my parents for tickets, and didn't get them, but when I hear music, I always think of these two performers as my foundation of understanding music!
