      @@johnszczepanek9076 Well, kinda, but not really. He told the stories from his perspective & artists in question had an issue. Plus, in true Canadian fashion, anything that might be popular (King of Kensington, Seeing Things, Degrassi (all 4 editions) & Corner Gas) get cancelled just as they are breaking into the US market. I've never understood this logic, but it happens in TV & music repeatedly up here. Why???? Randy still runs Vinyl Tap on a Toronto radio station, from the last I heard

    The rock hall of fame is a joke, personal bias and political bias are ridiculous when regarding who deserves to be in it. The Guess Who deserve it no question, American Woman and all of their other great songs earned them a place there.

    • @cindyschneider4728
      @cindyschneider4728 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      TRUTH! Apparently among the criteria is how danceable the artist's music is, what??? It's the " rock n roll" not the "disco" hall of fame. David Clayton Thomas of Blood Sweat andTears, Burton Cummings, and John Fogerty had the most immediately recognizable voices of the 70's.

    • @xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980

    • @ihcterra4625
      @ihcterra4625 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      It’s not a joke, its a commercial enterprise to make money exploiting the public’s interest in Rock and Roll.
      In fact, it is a perfect testament to the Music Industry and the exploitation of Rock and Roll. So everyone in the HOF are the ones they can get people to want to come and see. Some are great bands, but only if they were also commercial successes. Some are just great commercial successes.
      If you wanted a HOF of bands that embodied the true spirit of Rock and Roll instead of the commercialization of Rock and Roll, it would fail. Because it would be, by its very nature, a sell out. Just like the vast majority of bands who wanted desperately to “make it big” with commercial success instead of striving for greatness for the pure love of the music.
      So no, the HOF is a perfect representation of the exploitation of Rock and Roll and how the people with the money make the rules.

    about 7 years ago our label had a CMW showcase at a dingy little punk club in Toronto. All of the bands were more of a smooth synth-pop, really light stuff except us, who were blasting trebly amps and head banging. Right before we got on stage someone said "holy crap that's Randy Bachman". He stood near the bar watching our set and didn't move an inch the whole set. It was an awful show and kind of hilarious that THAT was the one he saw. Oh well ...

    To listen to Randy’s description of how they arrived at this song he still has the enthusiasm of teenager when describing it . That’s refreshing as a lot of artists seem to grow to hate their hits. It’s quite obvious he still has a love for the craft. I was little younger born in 61 and I use to play all my sisters BTO records on her plastic sears turn table/ stereo. I could sing those word for word.

      I've heard Paul McCartney has had so many experiences (LSD, maybe?) that he doesn't know reality from fantasy after all these years. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, even though his three bandmates swore he was addled.
      Randy Bachman's Mormon underpinnings bring truth to everything he says...even to the point of creating the Bachman-Turner Overdrive from the ruins of Brave Belt, just to show his contemporaries that stone-cold-sober rockers could beat the best. "Hey You" was his not-so-subtle dig at his former bandmate Burton Cummings - who'd previously stated, publicly, that "a bunch of Bible-thumpers" NEVER would achieve success in the rock-&-roll world.
      I've stumbled upon a website wherein I can listen to Bachman's "Vinyl Tap" archived broadcasts whenever I please. I agree with Mr. Simpson - Bachman is a storyteller for the ages. I'm also pleased to see that Messrs Cummings and Bachman have repaired their friendship. Also, kinda curious to see what happens with their joint lawsuit against Messrs Peterson and Kale, regarding the right to perform their own works on stage in concert.

    Thank you, Professor, for featuring these songs!!! I was 6 years old when my dad bought the American Woman album . It was one of the first rock music albums I really have memory of. We listened to that album over and over and danced around the living room singing every word to every song (which in hindsight was probably quite inappropriate for a 6 year old to be singing but who knew? Or cared? It was the 70s, right?) I still love listening to the mash-up of these two songs, in the car, windows down, volume all the way up. This album is #1 on my personal top 10 list of albums that influenced my deep love of music to this day. I doubt these guys ever read any of this, but on the off chance they do, I just wanted to say thank you for making such incredible, memorable music!

    Both of these guys, and their bands, are treasures. I interviewed Burton on his first tour, have seen them together, with BTO, etc. But I introduced my father, then 79, to Burton in 1985 backstage. I came back 10 minutes later and they're talking about Irish history. Before then my dad said all modern (post-1920s) music was "screaming". Afterward, he enjoyed listening to anything by Burton Cummings and totally changed his mind on modern singing and music. He said to me "he can really sing" -- he had been turned off by Sinatra, "he just talks"... Thanks for giving Randy and Burton their due here. I know these guys years in and out and haven't heard you get anything wrong, while hearing new stuff and going to the horses's mouth for the facts. Solid. In 1970 The Guess Who outsold the Beatles, the first artist to do so since 1964... but Jan Wenner blocked them from the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame... let's get them in!

      I'm from America and love the bonds that the Canadian bands have remain strong still today. We have some amazing bands down here who remained very down-to-earth. Typically East Coast Metal formed a very tight Brotherhood that still stands. Old Bridge militia didn't form up because of Metallica like many think. They were invited out to East Coast to give them the kick-start they needed,& they turned their back & screwed over the many that help them.All just kept the attitude of helping one another here on the East Coast that much stronger and for a long time it remained unjaded. Truly had a closeness with many of the Bands from back then. I see a similar kinship with bands from Canada. Maybe has a lot of it has to do with growing up pretty broke, unlike many musicians from the West Coast. For the most part Metallica were made up of members that didn't have a lot of money. & 1 who did ultimately ruined the band and was the biggest part of screwing over two of the greatest Souls who put out everything to help them, Marsha & Jon Zazula! Who only finally broke even like a year before their deaths, only because of a book he/they put out. And even then they were classy enough not to throw many harsh truths out there. Yet those in the know, now. I don't want to turn into all that. For years, bands that don't get involved in the drugs, at least two bad and help one another out stand apart and stronger and so many others. Public really needs to start getting together more and petitioning for more of a say, beyond the lil bit that has been given only more recently. More say is still needed! Petition the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and start telling them who needs to be in! Time for at least 50% the inductees to be named by the people!

    I do not know were he is at religiously in 2024, but in fall, 1977, at Brigham Young University, I was 18 years old and heard Randy speak about his life and conversion to Mormonism. Absolutely spellbinding, charismatic storyteller. Of course, I was enthralled. I've loved The Guess Who since I was 14. He had a second act with BTO that wasn't exactly chopped liver. I remember that he said he knew Elvis, and invited him to come spend some time with him in Canada, but Elvis died before that could happen. I remember he also told a story about his friendship with Olive Osmond, mother of the performing siblings. He also told the story about how he kicked his own brother Tim, out of BTO for drug usage. After he was done talking, I walked up to the stage to ask him to autograph the cover from my cassette recording of "BTO's Greatest Hits." As he was siging it, he said, "Man, that's a good album". I held onto it for years until I fianlly lost it to the dust bin of history. No Sugar Tonight" one of my all time favorite songs. "American Woman" guitar riff is one of the most recognizeable ever. Absolutely has to up there with "Satisfaction", "Sunshine of Your Love" et. al. So interesting to hear about it being such a fluke. RIP to the early departures of Tim and Robin Bachman.
