Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 9575 review: Powerful with a killer 4K display

  • Dell's first attempt at making its XPS 15 a true convertible with the 2-in-1 9575 mostly works with just a few drawbacks. You may also find that stunning 4K display and Core i7 CPU overkill (and overpriced). See at Dell: thrifter.com/syOc

    I just got mine a week ago. So far I am very happy with it. Wanted something in between my Dell Mobile Precision and my Surface Pro 3 - and this fits the bill perfect. I opted for FHD screen. Not so much for the battery life, but my eyesight isn't what it used to be, and 4K becomes a real pain with some legacy management interfaces I deal with on a day to day basis. Also went with the i5 with 8GB RAM. I didn't buy this as a gaming rig (although it does a lot of that without breaking a sweat) - most of my stuff is now in virtual land, and most of my content creation is done with a Precision workstation. All in all, I think this is one of the best devices Dell has put out. I would've like a little more input/output options, but I've been carrying around extra breakout dongles with my Surface Pro 3 - so I'm sure a few investments in some Thunderbolt 3 devices/cables/docks will solve all those issues.

    I bought this laptop as a good quality device. Overall it is good. But there was definitely a rush to market issue. Within 90 days of purchase, the power puck developed problems with the plastic sheathing on the puck-to-laptop end. The sheathing started shrinking, pullling back from the puck end of the cable by about 3 inches, exposing the individual wires underneath. When contacting Dell about replacing the puck, or buying a second one, they informed me that you could not buy a power adapter that had the C-port plug as came with with laptop when shipped. Instead, you have to buy a 140W puck with a Dell barrel connection, and then pay $20 for a converter dongle to get from the barrel to C-port connection. There is also a continuous problem with the Dell software monitoring application updating the RealTek drivers nearly daily. THe solution from Dell is to uninstall and reinstall the monitoring software, which only resolves the update notifications on a temporary basis. When asking Dell support about the update notifications, their question was “what makes you think you need to update software?” !!!! Perhaps it is your application that gave me the idea that an update was needed. Still like the laptop, but these technical problems are an annoyance.

    Also - having looked into nVME vs SATA drives, really most folks don't need nVME. I shouldn't even say need, most computer systems, and the software we use, doesn't need nVME. There are some outside the norm activities that might require it (database, server). I would rather get a nice SATA drive that has 1-2TB on it.

    Is the battery user replaceable? It seems like there's barely any performance difference with the base I5 and I7s judging by geekbench scores so it's mostly a question of RAM. How does it compare to the surface book 2?

    How is the performance of the pen though? I find that these 15 inch convertibles to be better for doing design or digital art with its larger touchscreen that supports pen. They are too big or bulky for typical tablet use, but put it on a desk to do notetaking or art is where is at.

    do they not sell the i7 16gb RAM 1080 model anymore??

    I ordered mine right after it came out and I can assure you I own a 16gb RAM, core i7, 1080 display xps 15 2in1 9575
    I can confirm, off the charger the battery life is awful, a little worse than my 2012 crapbook pro. but the charging speed along with everything else it offers totally make the poor battery life pretty negligible imo
    I've noticed the keys on the keyboard rattle a little during any swift movement, like while I'm carrying the laptop walking down the stairs.
    grease is super visible, keep something with you to wipe it off or you're gonna look like a slob. there's really no way around it without a separate cover.
    fan gets loud, dont do anything heavy if you plan on using it in a quiet lecture hall. haven't gotten to test that out myself yet tho.

      When we get the 9570 from Dell, we'll review it. They haven't sent out many review units yet.

      Windows Central yea that's what I thought... Is it because there is some sort of review embargo going on? Since it started shipping to customers in late April early May? Just curious

      Not really much difference from the 9560. Just newer processor. Now the case is a pretty old design.

      You can always get a cheaper laptop, but you're going to get what you pay for. You going for quality and something that you'll love to use, or something that'll save you a few hundred bucks, but be kinda gross? It's your call, but nothing is for free.

    How are you going to recommend a 1300+ dollar laptop to the casual user or student? What word is to slow for you on a $400 dollar one? Does power point not boot up as fast?

    • @mstb2023
      @mstb2023 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This would probably last throughout undergrad whereas I'm not sure the $400 one would. It would likely start to slow down and get laggy during that crucial senior year when you need it most!

    8GB soldered on a 1000 USD + laptop in 2018 is ridiculous. Obsolete within the year.

    • @WindowsCentral
      @WindowsCentral  6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      This comment is pretty ridiculous. We stopped "needing" more RAM about 10 years ago. 8GB is fine for the majority of people. Those who need 16GB (or more) know they need it. Most *think* they need it. Hang out in the IT world for awhile and see what people "need" for work and school.

    • @pescarlerik
      @pescarlerik 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Is that so? 8 GB should be more than fine for everyday tasks like normal web browsing, media consumption, office suite etc. However, as soon as you dig into more advanced tasks such as video editing, ps, illustrator, 3d modelling and not to mention gaming, your are def. going to benefint from >8 gb of RAM. And I'm quite sure the majority of people who would buy such an expensive premium device as the XPS 15 2 in 1 are all into the above mentioned. Also 8 gb in 2018 doesn't feel especially future proof. Really interested to hear your opinion about this
      ?

    • @JohnSheehan72
      @JohnSheehan72 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As an IT professional - the only reason I would need more then 8GB is if I'm sandboxing VM's for testing - and that's what my Precision Workstations (both desktop and mobile) are for. The rest of the day I'm sketching diagrams, in meetings, and occasionally programming switches and firewalls. To be honest, the 8GB with i5 is overkill for me as it is. When I spec a laptop, I usually use the 5 year rule - and I don't see this one not lasting that long barring catastrophic failure.

  • @HenilPatel89
    @HenilPatel89 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Man the battery life is horrible! Even with an i5 and 1080p screen? Gets you 8 hours!!? The new Huawei matebook x pro has a better screen and smaller batter (plus a touchscreen, better resolution and an i7 processor) gets you the same batter life if not more.. hmmm

    • @WindowsCentral
      @WindowsCentral  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah, but this is much more powerful hardware. MateBook X Pro is a 15W chip, this is 45W. MateBook has a (weak) MX150, this has AMD Radeon. Night and day in performance. Whether that matters to you is another topic.

    • @WindowsCentral
      @WindowsCentral  6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Well, if you wanted to use a pen the 9570 is kind of pointless. Presentation mode is also great for movies on the airplane. And people care. It's literally the reason why people kept asking Dell to make an XPS 15 as a convertible with pen. Get real, not everyone has your workflow or wants.

      I had The 2-in-1 before I bought the 9570 and I really wish I kept the 9575. Runs cooler, better speakers, presentation mode came in handy, and outside of driver/compatibility problems with some games... the performance difference between the two for games was negligible. My 9570 had bad QA issues including a shoddy keyboard, backlight bleed, fans kept running when the laptop was closed, and it blue screened when pushed hard (games).
