This Trellis System couldn't be more simple whether your berries are grown in the soil or in containers. The components are easily available to just about everyone. I've used T-Posts and Electric Fencing wire that you can find at any Big Box store.
In past years, I've made a trellis system that worked well, but this one is MUCH better and just as EASY to build.
This new Trellis system will be all you will ever need to trellis your blackberries and raspberries. To be successful growing berries, you really need to get them off the ground to prevent disease and pest damage. A trellis system is just about essential, and this one is so simple and easy to build anyone can do it.

@@BIGALTX I have ordered 10 gallon growing bags for my blackberry plants, but now I am wondering if I should have ordered a larger size? I usually grow them using the ground system, but I wanted to try something different. Should I send them back when they arrive?
I don't think 10 gallon grow bags are big enough. My blue tubs are around 18 to 20 gallons.
Also, grow bags won't last but a few years. Your berry plants will last a decade or more.
My advice would be to pick a container that will last a long time... and is pretty big :)

Thanks for sharing this information. We have planted two rows of berries in the last couple of months here in North Florida and I set the trellis post yesterday. I was considering a single wire but believe I will now add a cross beam at 18 and 60 inches for a double wire trellis. Your information made this task a bit simpler for the long run.

One of my favorite jellies is blackberry. My kids and I would pick the wild ones and I made jelly and blackberry syrup for pancakes. We had our own pigs processed by our local rural family owned and run processing and had good smoked bacon, sausage and ham. The blackberry jelly and syrups were very good with any of the smoked cured meats. I think I'll be growing some in buckets like you are, what I'm wondering about is the flavor. Do they taste as sweet and rich as the wild ones?

I visited a verrrry large blackberry farm in southern Missouri. They had connected a rebar about 12 or 18 inches horizontally to the t post & then attached wire to each end of the rebar. Only requires one t post. However your method looks great.

Theses berries and your trellis system look great! I like your experiments and how you do things. Have you ever had thorny trailing blackberries? I’m in the process of moving my boysenberries and marionberries and figuring out how I want to trellis them. The cattle panels I had last year didn’t seem to work well for me.

I’d love to put my berries in containers like that but , I live in Montana so I have some things In containers now but I have to gather them all in a bunch and make a straw igloo around them and cover with plastic to protect them , so that would be a huge job every fall to protect ALL my plants 😔

Blackberries spread by roots too. As far as I know, the growing characteristics for both Berrys are the same. But, I have never grown raspberries, so I am not exactly certain of that.

@@BIGALTX I got to drive one for the first time some years back when my husband and I went to a log cabin for our anniversary. It had lots of hilly roads to explore on the property that led to a prayer arbor. I had so much fun driving it. Now I'm legally blind so of course the state of Texas that's not allow me to drive anymore. Lol. But I could drive a golf cart if I had one. That would be so fun. I suggest the metal galvinized raised beds. They are more cost effective, last longer and open bottom. A 5ftx2ft oval holds 2 bushes perfect

I thought about putting my blackberries in them, but decided not to. But you are correct, they would do great with blackberry plants.
I love how nice this looks! My husband wanted thornless blackberries so I planted two plants two years ago. I didn’t know anything about growing them so I planted them in the ground in a large flowerbed. Now I want to dig them up and pot them like yours as I can tell they’re going to be invasive. Any videos on transplanting them to pots? I will wait until fall. We live in zone 7a in Oklahoma.
Just make sure you get a big pot. These tubs are around 18 to 20 gallons.
Get as much of the surrounding roots as you can.
If you do "wicking tubs" like these, try not to get much of the surrounding soil.
Soil does not "wick" like potting mix does.
Plant at the same depth as they were in the ground.
It's really hard to kill 'em so you'll do fine.
I really like growing them in containers. So many of the problems (like invasiveness) is solved this way.
Waiting till fall is a good idea.
It's fixin' go get hot soon and they might not do well if you transplant now.
I am using an old metal bed frame I got for free as a trellis for my blackberries.

Hello Allan, I’m hoping you can answer a couple of questions for me? I’m getting ready to start a berry patch. Your videos have been very helpful. I can not find a video you had. I don’t remember if you had a Video on Hoss Tool plastic netting or if you were just talking about the netting in passing.
My question is how has the plastic netting been holding up for you? My thoughts on fencing my berry patch. Three feet high chicken wire to keep most of the small varmints out. This chicken wire would be on the bottom part of the fence. Cedar post (from my property) 8’ apart then the plastic netting overlapping the chicken wire to make a 6’ high fence to detour the deer from coming in. I was thinking you used the plastic netting for a fenced in area. I could be mistaken. My question is do think my idea on the fencing might work? And do you remember that video? If so can tell me where to find it? I always enjoy your videos. Thanks so much for your time and help😊
I didn't use the Hortinova trellis for fencing, but I did mention that it might work.

However, a 6 foot fence might not be tall enough to keep deer out.
Most folks build 8' fences for deer.

I’m going to be planting veggies and fruit for the first time. Outside of my complete inexperience I’m concerned about keeping insects and wildlife (mostly squirrels and birds) off my garden. Is my best solution to cover in chicken wire or something similar? Thank you for any advice!

I'm just curious why your planting in buckets and not the ground. Specially for trees and bushes? I understand the soil problem for vegetables and other stuff just curious about the trees and bushes
Blackberries are very invasive. Planting them in containers keep them “contained“.
All the new canes will come up inside the bucket and not out in the walkways like they were before.
I used to have 700 feet of blackberries in the ground.
Also, gophers got in them and decimated them. So, this is my preferred way of doing it now. I’ve been doing it this way for about four years.
Are your totes open on the bottom or have you left the container intact to contain the blackberries from running? Thank you for sharing.😊
I built 2 different kinds of Wicking Tubs, but BOTH have a drain hole in the side of the tub at about 3" from the ground.
NO holes on the bottom. That defeats the "wicking" action of the tub.

Good video! The house I bought a few years ago had blackberries with it that died for seemingly no reason last year. You mentioned aging out, what’s a rough life span for these? My wife loved them and I’m thinking about getting more.

In traditional raised bed gardens, you can put a new layer of compost every year. With containers, I found soil replacement is a little difficult unless you dump out the pot and put a new mix in. Do you do anything special when adding new nutrients for your soil or do you just put a 1-2 inch layer of compost on the top of the containers every season?
I NEED to put compost in each season.
I don't always DO that :(
And yes, sometimes part of the soil will have to be removed
With blackberries it's difficult since they are so root bound

where are you getting your containers? (blue/orange) I have a source for some blue ones (very limited) and we are trying a new way to grow things kinda like your blackberries....looking good!!!
I bought the orange and red ones from a guy that raises cows and owns a feed store. Cattle raisers should have a lot of these left over from winter feeding. Contact your local feed store and ask.
I paid $3 each for the orange and red. I had some blue ones from feeding my cows and my neighbor gave me about 10 blue ones.
I have a lot of black molasses tubs but worry about them attracting so much heat in our TX summers. Would you share that concern? Thanks for the very informative videos.
For in ground blackberries do you need to make the trellis a little wider than 20in or do you just get rid of runners? I have some blackberries in ground and considering doing some in pots. Love the videos!
I would still go 20" if they were in ground.

Do you think a slightly longer tpost angled on each side in a V would work a little better? Im getting ready to plant mine and was gonna trellis like you show. Still debating if i want to angle the posts.
I thought about it, but just didn't see an advantage to doing that.
They will be harder to mow around with the tops sticking out in the walkway.
This has worked great for me... except... You might want to consider putting extra posts in the system.
My containers were placed real close together, and when the plants got huge and heavy, they seemed to lean hard on the wire.
Nothing broke or bent, but putting a couple of extra posts on each "long run" wouldn't hurt.

For the birds, try hanging some CDs from strings by your berries... Light reflects off them when the wind blows.

Are you going to put some kind of UV protector on those tubs? Are you something that looks exactly like those and they only lasted three years before they started falling apart from the UV light.
I don't think so.
They have a limited lifespan for sure, but they are pretty easy to change out.

This one is about 20 inches wide. The width is determined by the containers.
However, if you’re planning in the ground, 20” seems to be a pretty good width also.

I have a question, what do you use so the wire won't slip? What is the black thing near the wire?
I think the black thing you’re talking about is just a cable tie. I use them to tie the wire to the t post.
Now, that is not the best way to do it. I really need to go back and put T post clips on them… The kind you would use if you’re doing Barbwire. These cable ties won’t last but about a year. The sun will degrade them.
I finished making up my blackberry plant trellis today. Thanks! What happens if the blackberry plants should lean parallel to the wire instead of perpendicular to it? Actually, that seems to be the case with two of my Black Magic blackberry plants. In addition, I didn't plant my Black Magic blackberry plants inside containers, but rather directly into the ground. I sure hope that I don't wind up with a whole yard full of blackberries because of this.
You might need to lower your wires if they are in the ground.
For "Ground planted berries", the first wire needs to be about 2' off the ground and the next wire about 18" to 2' above that.

No, I’ve never grown raspberries. As I understand it, they have the same growth pattern and pruning needs as blackberries do. I think they are fertilized and planted the same way too. Let me know how they do in North Texas. I think they should do fine.
why do you have black pipe inside the pots? what size are the pots? 15 gallon or 20 gallons?
These are “Wicking Tubs”.
The black pipes are the fill tubes to fill the water reservoir at the bottom of the tub.
The tubs are about 18 to 20 gallons.

Yes, bees can fly straight through the netting. It’s not very small.

These are mineral tubs. Ranchers feed them to their cows during the winter. I have made them into what is called “wicking tubs“.

I found one of your older videos with the idea of using "water shoot" limbs from peach trees as tomato stakes. Did you have success with that? I planted extra tomatoes this year and we're looking for cheap ideas to stake them. We have 90 acres in the Ozarks and lots of trees, so I'm thinking about cutting some limbs and using those ... wonder how it worked for you. Did your water shoot cuttings grow roots? Thanks.
The water shoots are really not as strong as is needed for large tomatoes.

I am assuming that you are in a section of Texas that does not freeze. Up here in Zone 6 would my berries survive the winter in a container like this?
In Feb 2021 we were a -5 F.
There was no damage to the tubs. Only the plants that were not cold tolerant were effected.
Some of my berries had a lot of die off, a different variety had NONE.
So... I don't think there is any problem with containers IF you pick the right variety of berries.

any reason for using wire instead of string/twine/some other material? Strength?
Yes… Strength.
When these plants get tall and full of fruit, they can be quite heavy. String would sag, and or break. I don’t think it would work very well at all.

Hey sir! I'm in Dallas working on doing some planting in the back yard and I'm curious if I'd be able to plant some blackberries now while there's still some growing time in the year to get some growth on the plant to give it a head start for next year when I can get a full growing cycle in. Thinking of doing the same for strawberries. Thoughts?
You can buy them, but I would keep them in the pots till fall. It's just TOO hot to plant right now.
A better idea, is to let the nursery baby them all summer and BUY them in the fall.
Let someone ELSE care for them for the next 4 or 5 months
Your system from 7 yrs ago used heavier wire as 'spread preventers'. Do you see a need for that with this design?
Originally I used a few "spreaders" on this trellis, but most have fallen off and I didn't replace.
THIS is a much better trellis design than the old one.
I might consider putting in extra T-Posts later, but so far these have held them up nicely!
Do you tie the canes to the wires at any point? I have of the prima canes and 4 of some other variety that seems to be trailing type. Maybe just need to tie up the trailing type? Also do you have a video on how to prune them?

Probably, but maybe not right now.
Summer is a terrible time to plant anyway. If you are in the south, I would suggest planting in November and December.
If you’re in the north, you would plant in the spring.
Look for Bob Wells, nursery or Norse Farms online. They have a good plants and good prices.
I recently transferred a plant to a larger pot and a new cane popped up a few inches from the main plant plant. Can i dig that up and plant that in a new pot? I kind of know i can but i am wondering about the damage to the root system or how much root that cane needs to survive.
I would probably wait till fall. I don’t know where you live, but if it is hot right now it would probably be too stressful for the plant.
Just separate them in the fall would be my recommendation

I see that you take the wire straight down the row. Question, Would weaving the wire around alternating post give you more support by distributing the load on the two nearest post and not the two end post or would that put too much strain on the two nearest post?
The strain and the "load" is really very small.
I'll find out more when the blackberries fill out more, but I think this is going to work out just great 😎

How long does it take for the black berries to age out? When I raised them as a kid I was in fostercare for only 19 months until I was adopted, so I was unaware that the berries actually aged out. I just thought my parents got tired of fighting other critters for the food that was in the garden, and quit tending the garden. It was gone when I aged out of the system.
The research I've done says 8 to 15 years.
Probably depends on the variety.
I had about 1/4 acre of them and they started slowly dying back and losing production at about 8 years
does growing them in containers help out with preventing chiggers?
I really don't have any chiggers.
Haven't had any for decades.
I think the fireants keep them killed off :)

Very seldom will a strong wind break the berry canes.
The trellis really helps keep them safe from high winds

Grapes need a little more substantial wire system I think.
Grapevines filled with grapes get pretty heavy.
Remember, these wires aren’t holding up long canes. They are just keeping them from falling over. Kind of keeping them and check if you will.

I’ve never grown any raspberries. These are all blackberries. I think raspberries would do well here, but I’ve never tried them. As I understand it, they have the same growth habits.

Can this also be done for Raspberries also?
I’ve never grown raspberries, but as I understand it, they have the same growth pattern. So I would say yes this trellis this would work for raspberries just fine.
I grow Arapaho blackberries & they are awesome. But I have a couple of prime ark freedom. Can you tell me please how you prune them. I understand they are done differently.

Are these called wicked self watering containers ? I could see a black Pipes inserted on the side of each them. If so , Kindly if you could tel me the estimate time can last before you refilling em back with water.

Watering will depend on your climate and how large (and thirsty) the plant in them is.
In the hot (TX) summer, I will usually water a large tomato plant, or blackberry plant, EVERY day... at least every other day.
