This video brings back memories from when I would go next door to see my Uncle Phil working on his Boysenberries, raspberries, Loganberries and Marionberries. He was always working on something. Now I’m recreating this at my house. Great video! Greetings from Washington State where berries grow like crazy!
Oh, thank you for your informative information. This is the first time me planting, from root cuttings, and this year they have run everywhere and I needed to learn how to train them for a trellis. Hope all is well with you and your health, as I see this is from 2010 and I am on here in 2020. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. God Bless!
Do you have any literature on the step by step of establishing this type of trellis system, or is it really as simple as it looks? Primocane suppression twice a month in April and May, once in June (ending about half way through the month) then flouracane trimming immediately after harvest?
Dr. Arlie, I planted Caddo, ouachita and Natchez in May of this year with intentions of opening a U Pickit farm next summer. I have 3 trellis systems I am using, which are v-trellis, RCA trellis and the method that you use. I did not know which method would have the most yield, so I just thought I would try all three. I am curious as to what your thoughts are on the yield for each method. Is it about the same for all three methods? Thanks for your video, it was very informative, and easy to understand. Your method was definitely the easiest to build, less material, less work and it appears to be less to maintain.
Very good video. You say to fertilize with 2-4 ounces of calcium nitrate, can I do the same for my raspberries and blueberries? Also you speak of sprays, what type of sprays are you talking? Thanks again.
All Type Home Improvements use only fertilizer for large production volume, but if only for backyard plants, no,need to use pesticides or fertilizers. Be happy what your berry trees produce.
One of the best teachers I have seen or experienced. What time of year was your pruning done? We live in Central NC.What do you do with the new canes for the Winter? Thank you
Fred Moretz DR. Powell doesnt do much video anymore, however i live in the same town and have learned a lot from this man. You will start training your new primocanes after your harvest off the previouse year. It will usually take several prunings through the growing season. Usually the primocanes will be several feet along the wire (kind of like grape vines). The lateral branches you will want to prune back to about 8-10inches at end of growing season. Next season this will be your fruiting wood. Hope this helps sorry i cannot give specific times for your growing area
hy im from Romania,i want also to plant blackberry on my land 1000 m2 just blackbery, your videos there are very useful..thank you very much..and i wait for more
Dr. Powell, I just planted Black Berries in the spring of 2017 and wanted to know if I need to prune any of the canes that are 1 year old yet. They did produce a very small amount of berries but did not know if I need to prune the old canes right now since they are not even a year old yet.
Great video! Growing blackberry's for the first time. Its May 6th and I was wondering if I can cut them back now as you showed in the video? Any info would be appreciated.
I am adopting the TPUPS method based on your videos... My black boysenberries have scale and of course ants. Do you have any suggestions for dealing with these pests... (p.s. Diatomaceous earth doesn't seem to have any affect on these ants...)
I'm growing these in ny bif they fruit late here can you please give me a reason why trying to do the the way in your videos and advice would be awsome if there's a way to contact you personally please let me know
you lose a lot of your production doing it your way. I get more than 2x the number of berries any other grower gets from same varieties. not very impressed with this video. would be great for a beginner until they learn what works best in long run
That’s funny Robert. Why are you watching and where is your video, I searched, doesn’t exist. I guess it’s just annooother unqualified internet comment. .
I don’t have a video, so don’t beat me up like you did Robert!! (Lol). But my mom has several trees and what Robert is saying is true. I was surprised he cut those lovely full branches. My mom says also that the trees have to be pruned when they GO Dormant, like late fall when the trees loose their leaves. Once my Dad without asking Mom pruned the trees in late summer because the branches were getting too heavy and the following year, the trees didn’t give ANY fruit and the following just barely enough. They are easy to care for and very resistant.
That's a lot of unnecessary work. The more modern, two row system is easier to manage and gives a lot good fruit bearing canes off the top of the arc that develops when you use it. But you do you. Good luck.
The best pruning and trellising I watched in TH-cam
I am going to SIMPLY like this video and SIMPLY follow this guy’s instructions, because he SIMPLY knows what he’s doing.
I SIMPLY agree with you, that we all should SIMPLY follow this guy so we could SIMPLY have a nice berry patch.
@@ggutz3100 😀simple

This is one of the best tutorials I have watched. Thank you!
Same here, great tutor
I agree. Lots of information without a lot of unnecessary talking. Short and sweet.

that's simply simplistic
I have learned a lot from watching your videos. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us.
I love your trellis system. Can you post a how to make a trellis, what materials you use.
Why do you only allow 2 canes per plant to grow?
Thank you! This makes sense and is direct. Maybe there's hope for my plants yet!
Great, helpful videos.
You continue to teach us well. Thank you very much for the presentations.
Excellent presentation ... I'm going to work...
How do you keep the area around them so weed free. I can’t win the battle with mine.
Just what I was looking for. Thanks
I love your videos keep them up I’m learning a lot
Thank you for explaining it so well
Thank you. Great video. Just what I needed.
I came to see the trellis set up
Very informative, thanks
thank you. i plan on planting my first blackberries in the spring the pruning looks scary
You want to plant them in June/July and train them to the trellis. The actual crop blooms in spring.
Do you have any literature on the step by step of establishing this type of trellis system, or is it really as simple as it looks? Primocane suppression twice a month in April and May, once in June (ending about half way through the month) then flouracane trimming immediately after harvest?
My berries are just about done this summer. When should I do this procedure?? Do I do this same procedure for Marionberries too?
Excellent video. Thanks. A little hard to hear you.
what kind of tape you are using?
Polyethylene tape
Is this done in the spring or in the fall?
How does the branch on the top wire continue to grow if you cut it off above the bottom wire?
what is the name of the plastic tape u use for tieing?
Thx
Excellent video. Thank you.

Do you sell the starts or can you tell me where to get the Kiowa and triple crown starts?
Why are my blackberries discolored? Sometimes they have white patches on them

thanks,I will be saving this info, this was great!
Where do I get a hat like that?

I am not sure why you only left two canes. Is what you cut off from last years harvest? Do you cut old canes and only leave a couple of new canes?
Me either. Most other videos say leave 4-5. Seems like only 2 will decrease your yield.
These days we have thornless primocane varieties.
I grow Prime Ark Freedom.
Do blackberries grow on new growth?
Will this technique work the same with boysenberries?
Can you please let me know what spray you use to treat the bottom of the cane? I think you said something about a copper spray?
Thanks
i simply thank you. i guess you cut them down every spring after you have 3feet of new growth??

Should have placed the camera closer.
I have thorny blackberries growing in Texas that i will trellis soon. What are the wire heights on your trellis system?
ResidenrCharlie - how did you end up trellising your blackberries? Do you have any pictures?
@@SteveShoemake I can email you some pictures if you like
Volume too low. Pls. Make adjustment next time.
Dezinfection, very smart!!!!!!
No disrespect, but it's very hard to hear you. Your microphone is too far away.
Can't hear a thing! 😯
Wait wut!???! I'm over here from Cog Hill Farm...is this channel dead?
I'm really sure you can build it yourself. I did this 2 weeks ago thanks to the Woodglut plans.
Clorox right on the roots
I can't hear anything on this: too bad, it looks good.
