I have never used Spotify. I do check out bands on TH-cam and buy their CD's if I like them. I prefer to have a physical copy as it supports the artist better and it will always be mine to keep.
Frightening, this just crushes artists. As much as I love watching your guitar collection videos, I think this kind of topic is where your channel shines. I've never used Spotify, I usually check out new music on TH-cam and buy a CD if I like it. I've been to some recent shows, and it's tough for artist's to tour these days, they have to hock merch just to make ends meat. I used to play clubs back in the 80's and things were so much easier for musicians back then. Mostly I just teach these days, do the occasional gig for fun.
Hey brother. I got your book. It should get here today. This video. Music is not what it was. Technology has transformed the world and the human experience. I still play my guitars and learn old bits of rock music from days gone by. The live music experience is mostly a dream today. I try to assemble with others but it’s usually a tail chasing activity. I still like my guitars, and continue to enjoy playing them. Rock on!
I don't listen to background music. In fact, in general when I listen to music that's all I am doing. However if those who listen to said music don't care how it was produced, why should I? Great artists aren't being replaced here. Low effort/talent artists might be, but if something cheaper can fill that niche, that's just the way the world works.
All platforms will do this; business and ethics - contrary to what enterpreneurs want you to believe - are not compatible, at least not in the long run. So the solution is to STOP buying their product. Quit platforms altogether. Support indie radio, buy records - vinyl or CD - basically from indie artists & indie labels. Go to concerts. Get a hi-fi (even a low budget one). Μake listening to platforms NOT COOL by expressing your poor opinion about them in your social circle. Tell them what these are - garbage. Otherwise don't expect that there will be actual music, or cinema, or any other form of human creative expression in the future. In the beginning few people will do the same but isn't this the way grass roots movements always worked?
i think the total removal of monetary support would be a bigger and more effective way to send the message. similarly with things like chatgpt, channels that i follow that started using it and other ai generated connect i stop following. i don't unfollow for "checking these things out" but if it's obviously being used regularly, even if it's ai generated thumbnails then i'm gone. let the ai support them.
They will never stop. They will try for all the music to be AI. Can we stop pretending these companies care about anything. They are ideologues. They want it all. ALL.
I like this approach as it is based on understanding of how capitalism works and therefore very realistic, however i still dont like the idea of rewarding a company with your continuous subscription after their shady practices are revealed. So i would still encourage people to switch to other platforms like Apple music and Soundclound or Tidal and follow your suggestion there.
That's why I never listen spotify playlist. I won't let an algorithm decide what I listen to. I have a huge sheet with albums that I want to check out, and I'm still discovering new artist on my own. So why even bother?
It's the 'race to the bottom' basically . . . soul-less, 'ghost', mass generated background music - back to the MUZAK of the '60s only worse. Spotify continues to destroy the music business as it was once known - sideline everyone but the 'major artistes' who have the label budgets behind them to ensure mass traffic on the platform in favour of 'production music' churned out by faceless hacks and AI. It's disgusting and it's a model that is perfect for the Danial Eks of the world . . .
I have never used Spotify. Why would I promote a concept of people with no knowledge of, or history/ participation in an art form, yet take the spoils from, merely because they hold a data base to reach THEIR own customers..?! It should have been clear for all to see, when Blackrock were on the global publishing buy-up, stocking their Iron Mountain holding facility. However! You all seem to be eating it up.

That’s wonderful. I’m wondering if I should go back to this way of operating

Wonderful. Thank you for the support. And for sharing your thoughts. Rock on !
If I want to listen to "Ambient Music", I'll drag out my old Brian Eno Ambient Series LPs!
I just plug my guitar into some effects and make my own. Yes it's probably rubbish but it keeps me amused.
I still selling c.d. badges with own music in my country, no problemo! But i get your point!

Canceled Sirius last week.
YT premium is all I need these days.
Screw them. Don't have an account and don't need one. I listen to CDs and go to live shows.
I remember Ted Gioia was suspecting these phantom artists for a while.

listeners want to play play play, spotify doesnt want to pay pay pay, so you want to shut spotify off.
