I’ve watched a number of other videos explaining how to install and wire a dashcam in my Gen 3 Prius. They all showed running the cable to the passenger’s side of the car and then over to the cigarette lighter socket in the middle under the console. For some reason, that socket on my car doesn’t work and I haven’t had the time to track down the problem. So, I’d been putting off the installation. Finally, I realized that, if I’m going to drive for Uber, I really need to get this cam installed. So, I came back to TH-cam and that’s when I found your video. Coincidentally, I also had chosen the exact same Vantrue cam as you did. I thank you for recording and posting this video. You’ve solved at least two problems for me - running the cable to the driver’s side and also, not having to worry about getting the cigarette socket working. BTW, if that pretty little red-haired girl is your wife, I think you’re a fortunate man. She’s absolutely adorable!
This video is EXACTLY what I needed. I drive a Prius also and I drive for Lyft. Just bought the same camera and was wondering how how it was to hard wire it, thank you. I've had two questionable incidents happen to me while driving for lyft, one concerning a traffic ticket and another with an out of control passenger who was high as a kite. I finally broke down and bought this camera and I'm hoping to have it in before New Years. Thanks again !
Thanks for the support! I thought it was going to be a lot harder than it really was. The only hard part was contorting my body to put the cord up in the headliner. The whole process, even setting up to film it couldn't have been more than 30 minutes.
@Brockton Hankins I agree with that. For the purpose of safety and evidence it does a fantastic job. There are settings on the camera to change exposure and lighting, etc but I haven't messed with it.
Two things. It matters which way you plug in the “add a fuse”. One side of a fuse socket is power. The other side is to the device. You need to plug in the pig tail so that the power goes THROUGH the fuse. Second. The Hard wire kit has a box on it that is to detect low voltage and cut power so you won’t run down your battery. You could just cut the provided 12v plug but you would lose that feature.
I tucked the top part along the window into the headliner too. Also, around the door seal in my 2012 Camry there is a rubbery weatherstripping. Not the foamy black weatherstripping. It’s the same color as interior and perfect for running cables. I almost think it was designed to tuck away cables. I used a plastic bike tire tool to help guide the cable. I’ve now got an excellent install job and kept the cables away from the side airbag. Don’t want the cables causing a malfunction should the airbags deploy. That could be deadly. Could have used more video of the door portion of the install process. Overall, loved the video and how it gave me the confidence to tackle this. Thank you!
Very useful. I installed a Nextbase 522 but needed a Prius example. The biggest pain was running the rear camera cable. Even with included bike tool it was a struggle getting around the tight seam with the roof.
Yeah above the headliner is not a walk in the park! I just posted the N4 walkthrough a few days ago for the hardwire including the rear camera. Check it out and let me know if you did it the same way. I’m curious how others do it
Useful information. Not sure if it would cause a problem or not but you ran your cable across the side curtain air bag. I pulled the trim loose on the windshield pillar and ran the wire down the inside of the trim piece till I was past the air bag.
I made the mistake of forgetting to include BOTH fuses in the plug in. I used the Dome light socket and the camera worked but i lost my cabin lights! Simple fix. Stuck the 5 AMP fuse in where the 7.5 A was and stuck the 7.5 A in the other slot for the Dome lights. Voila!

Anything powered from the vehicles battery while it’s not running will kill the battery. Usually people have to install a secondary battery for the camera.

The only thing I'm thinking is, would it probably be easier if you just put an obd2 adapter and connect it to the regular obd2 connector that is used for the sticker inspection?
That is always an option, but then it would make your OBD2 slot unusable. I suppose you could unplug it if you needed to use that sensor to read your check engine codes but this way you don't have to worry about blocking it.
How well does the motion detection work on this one? Someone hit my car but my old cam didn't fire up. I'd like to hardwire a cam like this one to catch em next time!
Honestly it works pretty well, only caveat is if you want it to run 24/7 you must get an external battery setup or you’ll kill your battery over time. Only time I leave it plugged in if I’m not driving is if I’m in the store or out to eat but never overnight anymore.

After proper hard wire when parked How can we record when motion is detected before unit turns it's self off completely? Mine when parked will detect motion an record but after around five minutes of no motion the unit turns it self off completely
I want it to be hardwired so it can record anytime there is motion around the car. This way it can record if someone backs into your car or if there is any other damage that occurs where you'd need footage for insurance purposes or the police. As a side note to that, you never have to remember to plug it in the cigarette lighter when you get in the car it's just always ready.
So if you plug into a fuse that has constant power, do you need to manually shut off the camera when you turn off your car? Won’t it drain your battery?
I have found it does drain the battery! A few times I have gone maybe 4-5 days without driving and have come back to a dead battery. I keep a portable car starter and air compressor in the trunk so it’s a 30 second fix, but it could be problematic for some. I have found it’s only a problem if I don’t drive my car for several days, i.e. coming home from vacation.
Well it’s possible to get it above the mirror but I prefer to not have either camera lens blocked by the rear view mirror in any way. If it were above, you’d probably not catch everything happening in the car
It's called an "add a fuse" but it should come in the box if you bought it new. If you bought it used, try eBay for an add a fuse. They are very cheap.
Hi, I just wanted to ask something. So, if you hard-wire the dash cam - does, that keep the Camera on, continuously, even when the car ignition is turned off. Please let me know. Thanks, Great video by the way. And if the Camera, stays on constantly whilst hard-wired, would that cause the Main CAR Battery to drain, or not?
It makes it really convenient when you want to find a clip. Having them in individual files helps when you need to track down a specific clip. Also, if it were one continuous 6 hour clip, as soon as the card fills it would completely delete the 6hr file. This helps to minimize loss in my opinion
On the device itself go to the settings and it will ask you to format the card, from there you just click to format and it should work just fine after that!
@@TroveLessTraveled_ Nope. Lol. I tried the Obd, dashboard lights, and cigarette lighter fuse and got nothing. Maybe my ground sucks. It's dark now. I will have to try another time.

Hello, I have the same cam with the same hardwire kit but a lot of reviews are stating that it will drain the battery. Because of that I only hardwired it so it turns on when my car turns on. Now that you've had the camera for awhile do you have any battery issues being always on? Thanks!
Interesting you say that. I think I have seen issues on one of my cars with battery drainage. I think best thing you can do is take the off camera when you’re home. I definitely want it to store video if I’m parked and get hit but when I’m home I don’t need to drain the battery
It only uses 5 volts. I suppose if you left it running for a month without driving your car it's possible? I wouldn't recommend it on a car you were storing as a non op, but for a daily driver you'd never have a problem
I don't know if Best Buy stocks them. You can get them on eBay or Amazon, but I did not check any storefronts. As far as I know, it is law in all 50 states that people need to be notified when they are being filmed in your car. A small sticker or magnets as they get in the car is all you need.
Nice! I’m a medical courier, and have a 2011 Prius. I’ve been wanting a dash cam. Do you know if by having the cam plugs into your OBD fuse slot, if it causes any codes, or messes with the information that a OBD scanner looks for?
I don't know for sure. I do know on my gray prius check engine light definitely still works because it has come on before. As far as I can still, there are no issues with readings.

Gen4 I don’t know to be honest I’ve never been in one. The newest Prius I’ve ever had is still my 2012 daily driver
do they sell one with wifi?
I believe the X3 but it only has one front facing camera.
Don't you think it's strange that it records on 1,3 or 5 minutes loops? Why not one long loop then rewrite?
It makes it really convenient when you want to find a clip. Having them in individual files helps when you need to track down a specific clip. Also, if it were one continuous 6 hour clip, as soon as the card fills it would completely delete the 6hr file. This helps to minimize loss in my opinion
@@TroveLessTraveled_ thanks for the reply CD
This guy should be a Male model.
Handsome and not full of shit.
My wife would never allow it 😂😂
Thanks
Hi. Does the camera come with the cable to attach to the fuse? Thanks
No it doesn’t. The hardwire kit you can buy on amazon is $15-20 and also includes the add a fuse you’ll need to finish the job
@@TroveLessTraveled_ Roger that. Thanks guys.
Sooo apparently there is an ODB adapter that allows for plug directly into the ODB.
I heard obd don’t work well for that
which hard wire kit did you use?
I bought the Vantrue hardwire kit on Amazon. I'll include the link in the description. Thanks for the heads up. I didn't make that part clear.
Thanks
@@plasticcolorproductions5622 No problem, thanks for the support!
this is perfect for me becuase my 05 camrys' cigg lighter dosent work.
No kidding! The best part is about doing it this way, all the mess stays out of the way and it looks professional!
finally got my n2 pro hardwired into my car, already feeling more secure
Does it have to be THAT specific cable I need for my vantrue or can i get the cheap $8 kit from walmart?
Honestly I don't know. I'm assuming now that I have a little experience, that any cable will work, but I didn't test anything but the Vantrue cords.
20 min? No way!
Has it ever drained or came close to draining your cars battery?
That would be very helpful info.
Thanks
my camera is telling me to please insert TF card but I already put a 64gb SD card inside
On the device itself go to the settings and it will ask you to format the card, from there you just click to format and it should work just fine after that!
the same thing happened to me.. while the sd card is in just go to the settings and format it.. it should work right after that
Tried the OBD fuse and it didn't turn on.
Installing on a Prius?
@@TroveLessTraveled_ Nope. Lol. I tried the Obd, dashboard lights, and cigarette lighter fuse and got nothing. Maybe my ground sucks. It's dark now. I will have to try another time.
@@TroveLessTraveled_ I plugged into the fog light fuse and after replacing the blown fuse it works. I put the g sensor, collision, and motion detection on 1 (lowest). When will it stop recording and shut off? Lol
Hello,
I have the same cam with the same hardwire kit but a lot of reviews are stating that it will drain the battery.
Anyone have a 2016 Toyota Prius C that has hardwired their dash cam ?
will it drain the battery?
It only uses 5 volts. I suppose if you left it running for a month without driving your car it's possible? I wouldn't recommend it on a car you were storing as a non op, but for a daily driver you'd never have a problem
@@TroveLessTraveled_ I see this reply is from 5 months ago. Has it affected the 12V battery charge?
California Driver Would like to know how your battery is doing as well.
Does best buy have these, and can we have them in Los angeles ....if we can ,do we need put a sign
I don't know if Best Buy stocks them. You can get them on eBay or Amazon, but I did not check any storefronts. As far as I know, it is law in all 50 states that people need to be notified when they are being filmed in your car. A small sticker or magnets as they get in the car is all you need.
California Driver where did you get your sticker/sign?
@@ABBAManon email me and I'll show you a couple that may work for you.
@@TroveLessTraveled_ Hi.I installed today in a 2012 Corolla hardwire 7.5 fuse. Does the camera stay illuminated in parking mode at night or does the screen turm off? Thank you
@@toddweat7742 Screensaver will put into sleep mode and still records.
Good shit man

California Driver keep up the great content. Looking forward to ur next vid
@@jordanleban8312 Thanks dude, I have a lot of stuff coming!
Anyone have a smart way to cover the screen while it’s recording? Kinda distracting
You can press a button and it’ll turn the screen off while recording. Great question! I prefer to have it on though
@@TroveLessTraveled_ thank you so much!! I will test this tonight when I leave work :)
Nic
Thank you!
Man, it's so obvious. Could you hide it more if you wanted?
Are suggesting the cords are obvious or the camera is obvious?
Cool Video!!! Sub you !! Cant drive yet...
One day you'll be out there!
I don't think a pro would have used pliers, they would have used a socket set or a wrench lol. But good video!
Um, that's not a ground. It has plastic behind it. You need something with metal behind it...
I believe there are metal threads the screw touches. If there wasn’t metal in there it wouldn’t complete the circuit... so it works.
