Thanks for this!! I just finished my repair and it went great thanks to this video. I found a battery on ebay and paid $10 for one. It was all I could find. Delivered in 3 days.
Thanks for the video it helped me getting my came disassembled. The correct size/spec for the battery is a 3.7v 280mAh 552030H battery and that "partnumber" is just the size 5.5mm x 20mm x 30mm (they can be sourced from aliexpress) Also the size is actually important and it should not be exceed (even if the battery fits) (that does not seem to be the case in this video btw); The problem with li-po batteries is that they expand, specially when failling (as can be seen on this video), if they expand and get perforated they can short and burn (all energy is converted to heat); Well perhaps a 200mAh battery won't be enough to burn your car (ydk) but it may damage your device.
Thanks for your video, very very well done. Those two covers you have to remove with a pin on the top and bottom were a pain ugh. I noticed you skipped the battery leads soldering though lol. Mine was particularly tough, probably due to the use of lead-free solder. I used a ton of no-clean flux and it still resisted me. Oh well, I got it done. I am pretty impressed overall with the engineering design on the inside, though I would have liked that speaker to be held in by a clip or something. I wanted to add that this battery is widely available just about anywhere under the name 502030 in 300mAh+ form. I probably overpaid for mine on Amazon but at least it arrived very quickly.
The design of the newer N2 is a little different cause the two boards are now connected with a ribbon cable as well, but still comes apart exactly the same as far as getting to the battery. Thank you very much for this video...got my N2 back up and running with a fresh backup battery.
A great detailed video... thanks! My N2 was baked in the summer Phoenix sun and ended up completely deformed. The unit however, was still functional. I purchased a non-working N2 with a pristine case from eBay (for $18 including shipping) and using this video, was able to switch out the electronics from my N2 into the like-new case from the non-working unit. While disassembled, I also replaced the ruined battery with one from the eBay site you recommended. Thanks again for this very helpful video.
Your video was very helpful, I was missing the two front screws behind the plugs. My battery was puffed up just like yours. I found that my cigar lighter plug turns off after an hour... so the dash cam would use the battery for its memory. Eventually it forgets the time and date... which *really* screws up the file system... I had a guy run into me, but I couldn't show the cop the file because I thought if I powered it up again it would erase the previous file.... I did use the video to get out of the ticket I got, and my insurance company was *very* glad I had the video. Here's the best part... I said screw this, I'm just going to cut the battery off and run the wires outside the case. I then put a 3.6v lithium cell in a AA holder and double-stick taped it to the case. Never gonna worry about this again! 73 de KI5YG.
Your videos are very easy to watch (all of them). I was so engrossed that I had the thought about the tape on the buttons at exactly the same moment as you. Thank you for bringing us all with you when you explore the world around you.
Thanks for the detailed video! Just replaced my battery, although I ended up splicing the wires instead of soldering. Used foil tape to hold the splice then wrapped the foil tape with electrical tape. It's a tight fit in there, so I don't anticipate any issues down the line. Those wires were TINY, but with patience I got it all back together. Pro Tip: For anyone having an issue getting the small screws back in, draw the tip of your screwdriver over a magnet for about 30-40 secs in order to magnetize it. ;)
Great video. Vantrue would not stand by their product after my N2 Pro died when I tried to update the firmware. They blamed the battery but it worked fine previously if plugged in. Now it’s a brick. I’ll try to replace the battery. Great and helpful video, thanks
Did you replace the battery? Vantrue refused to replace mine and is an absolute joke of a company. I only want to keep my vantrue working bc I love the motion sensor capturing clips. (people intentionally damaging my car have been thwarted with this cam)
Great video, just a reminder that this video is for the N2, not the N2 Pro. The N2 Pro is a bit different once you get it open. U don't flick up the black bar to release then unplug the LCD ribbon cable, instead you slowly prize away the tape holding the LCD in place so u can get to the 4th screw, but you leave the cable attached, then u can remove the 4 screws holding the lower circuit board in place. Also, it's worth having a little gorilla tape handy to hold the battery to the speaker when re-assembling.
Thank you for this! I have the pro version, which is a little different. However this video helped me get it apart to fix my menu button (it wouldn't click). I would never have found the two outside screws hiding under the covers without this video.
Thanks for the detailed video. The specs on Vantrue's website and Amazon listing state the battery is 250mAh. I took mine apart just to be sure before I ordered a new one and it is a 502030 3.7v 250mAh 0.93Wh. Maybe they used 280mAh batteries at some point? Probably just what they could get in the supply chain at the time.
2:23 You can adjust the exposure for the cameras in the settings. I have the N2 pro and, after a firmware update, I was able to adjust the exposure for the front and rear separately of each other. Prior to the firmware update, the exposure setting effected both front and rear cameras. Thank you for the video, I will be using this as reference as I take apart and replace the internal battery in my N2 pro.
Thanks for the video! This helped me disassemble the T2, which is slightly different but had the same screw hole covers. Ended up finding a bad capacitor in that one
Thank you so so so much! I had an issue with my SD card but your video was so clear and easy to follow, it helped me take apart the thing easily. I appreciate you!
Thank you. That was really helpful. I was able to replace the battery in less than an hour. Okay, I couldn't reinstall three screws :-D Previously, the last video was never saved. ok watched the video 3-4 times 👌 I accidentally pressed the square thing near the front camera🫣 (infrared sensor) and it came off 🤔 is it hard to fix? 🤷♂️ thanks🙏
Agree with you on the China problem as we saw this year with getting PPE's for the early days of covid. We need to bring manufacturing of that type home so just like energy, we're not dependent on other countries. Anywho, my Van True is only about 8 months old and doesn't take a charge anymore. I wonder if the hot sun of Northern California shortened the battery life.
My cam is a silver painted surface, maybe that helps, but aluminium foil stuck over the top I think would be better then painting yours. Maybe put a few thin strips of double sided tape across the top then stick the foil on it so there is a gap between the camera and foil for air flow. All these dash cam need power cables, I wonder why they put a battery in the camera that has small capacity when they can put a larger battery near the other end of the power cable near the power source, this can also help stop baking a battery in the sun.
The battery is only to allow the unit to close files and shut down. If the battery was on the other end and the cable was pulled the unit would loose the video.

Good useful review & DIY. For all those who want to know: What is the difference between N2 and N2 Pro, check from here: 02:25. And I have 2 questions: 1) Does the back camera in N2 turn into IR mode, despite not having IR lamp? Not sure if you can find one that physically fits in but even then, one may add the capacitor to external surface and wire it in, or that is not an option. Thanks anyways and great job.
Your probably going to want to add an IR source for the N2. At any rate, it only shows what is in the cabin. Could use a cap if it was large enough. But would have to be external. The battery is cheap. Thanks for watching.
Would it be possible to cobble up a sun heat shield/shade of some sort? Even so, everything will get plenty hot parked in direct sunlight... far as the old battery goes, might I suggest keeping it somewhere safe in the event it experiences a 'thermal event'?
Silver or white paint should work fine. My radar detector is light grey/silver and has been sitting on the dash for years and is fairly cool to the touch. Lay a white sheet of paper on the dash and it will be many degrees cooler.
I don't get it, today I connected my dashcam to the pc for the first time to see how videos look like. I found out that dashcam won't work without the cable connected. I also found that some of the files can't be played and they all have the same date and there are a lot of videos missing. I don't know how it works and why some of the videos were only recorded when the car was parked and sometimes it don't record at all. Could that be because of the faulty battery?

Hello Mike Great video on the Vantrue Pro. I was wondering if you may have encountered the same problem i'm having with my Vantrue Pro , 1) it does not reliably record video,( very frustrating ) i always format the SD card after i download the videos to my computer. 2 ) while i am driving it shuts off by itself and have to re-plug the USB cable into the USB power plug in my car. Any information would be helpful and appreciated.......Thank you and keep up the good work.
Haven't had that issue. I have two of these now and solid so far. I would suspect an intermittent either in the power cord or in the 12 volt outlet. Intermittent connections can be a real pain to chase down.
The camera is not designed to see out the back window. The rear camera is to see inside the car and is designed for Taxi Cab, Uber, and Lyft Drivers to record the front and inside of their vehicles. You need a dash cam with a separate rear camera mounted in the rear of the vehicle. The N2 Pro illuminate the inside of the car at night to record what is going on which is great for Taxi, Uber, and Lyft Drivers who transport passengers and need to document incidents.
This looks like a trip to a electronic repair for me, hopefully this is all that's wrong with mine as it keeps turning off as wells not working without the power cord.
Ok, so my problem is the camera does not respond or come on even while hardwired, (tested hardwire on other units they work) is this what you experienced? How did you know you needed a battery?
I think it would be difficult to find a capacitor that would carry the unit for 10 to 15 seconds that would fit inside. It needs the battery to shut down while saving the video.
@@theradiomechanic9625 The N4 has a capacitor rather than a battery. It looks the same shape and size. I wonder if the capacitor the N4 uses would fit in the N2.
@@theradiomechanic9625 Unfortunately I don't have the N4. Vantrue CS mentioned to me the N4 has a capacitor when I asked them why they use a battery. I imagine the capacitor for the N4 would fit the N2 but I don't know where one would source one. I searched on eBay but was unsuccessful. I run Mobius cams in my car too and swapped out their batteries for capacitors.
That thought passed through my mind. If the paint doesn't work out that is my next step. But suspect that white paint will work fine. Lay a piece of white paper and on the dash and it stays fairly cool.
Hi Celeste. Yes, this doubles the capacity. However the issue was not longevity, but melt down from the sun. This battery only needs to carry the unit for 15 seconds for so until it shuts down. This little cell is more than capable of that.
The battery is also used to keep date/time not just close out the files. My unit keeps reverting time to Jan 1, 2018 and therefor the whole "deletes oldest files first" on a full SD card goes completely bonkers and can delete what is actually the newest file. Two accidents (not my fault) and no useful video. :( I lost the last accident because the other guy lied and I had no video to prove it. I was sitting at a stop sign but he said I hit him.
Hey, I just did what was told in the video and replaced the battery but now my N2 Pro keeps turning off and on and never stops. Let it charge for several hours but nothing. Can someone help me plz what I did wrong and what to do next ? Thank you
@@theradiomechanic9625 Surprised you replied lol thought you wouldn't as it's been couple years since this video. The dashcam itself doesn't give me the chance to format the memory card. But did format it using my laptop and yeah I know need to format it by dash cam as well. I will also try another memory card once I'm home. Please let me know if something else comes up in your mind to check. Thank you for the reply 🙏
You posted this about the time I bought mine. My battery is dead after only about 8 months. Do you know the dimensions for that battery? I have found some with 3cm x 3cm x 0.3 cm. However I don't desire taking mine apart to measure a battery that is likely distorted.
I have the same dash cam and unfortunately I have my front lens broken can someone tell me where I can find JUST THE FRONT LENS? thank you so much guys I'm desperate :( :( :(
I know this is old but maybe it will help out someone. The lens is a 170 degree wide angle and most likely an M12 thread. The startup sound is identical to the SJCAM 4000 action cams which used the lens I’m talking about. They cost around $10-$12 from a U.S seller and half that from China. I’m getting one of these but the Pro version and I want to remove the IR filter behind the front lens so it can see infrared as well like the rear one can. If there’s little to no glue holding it in place, I can hopefully unscrew it without taking the dash cam apart.
I have two car cameras ,and one little cube camera ,none of them work ever, they came broke ,the two car cameras won't take a charge, the little cube camera got red hot while charging ,so pay attention when charging. Cheap cameras ,three cameras none worked .anyone else having that much fun with cheap Chinese cameras

You didn't show how did you change the battery, how to put the red and black cable
A link to this battery please.
Why doesn't my "!" light up blue like everyone else? I just bought it.
Hey, I just did what was told in the video and replaced the battery but now my N2 Pro keeps turning off and on and never stops. Let it charge for several hours but nothing. Can someone help me plz what I did wrong and what to do next ? Thank you
Try formatting the memory card. If that doesn't do it try a different memory card. That's usually how they behave when the memory card is corrupted.
@@theradiomechanic9625 hey, so I bought another memory card and still the same. Keeps turning off and on. Please help me what to do next ? Thanks
@@JayJay-nz1qxdid you format using FAT32?
@@ptbuber5027 yes sir I did but didn't make any difference
Thanks radio mach
Your welcome Ron.
Good Insight 5 years later re China ;)
Hi where can I find the battery in Italy?
Hello Salvatore, e-bay has these. Just do a search for the battery voltage and milliamp hour. There are many sources.
What is URL for battery?
Sorry, that was years ago. I don't remember. Probably from Amazon. These batteries are usually found by size in mm.
You posted this about the time I bought mine. My battery is dead after only about 8 months. Do you know the dimensions for that battery? I have found some with 3cm x 3cm x 0.3 cm. However I don't desire taking mine apart to measure a battery that is likely distorted.
The battery is more like 3cm X 2cm X .3 cm... go back and watch the video again. I show the e-bay web page at least twice.
I did see the screenshot. However, I found some 280mah batteries as well and debating those. I know 80mah isn't that big a deal. Thanks
No worries, just has to fit in the hole...
@@theradiomechanic9625 Truth.
I have the same dash cam and unfortunately I have my front lens broken can someone tell me where I can find JUST THE FRONT LENS? thank you so much guys I'm desperate :( :( :(
Probably going to cost nearly as much as the unit.....try e-bay for a used/non functional unit.
Thank you for posting... but... first 4:30 seems to be a lot of talking and talking and.....
These things never last more than 2 years...
i switch battery but still not working ((
I think it’s easier to just buy another camera
T'as pas changé la batterie en faite on ne te vois pas fait les soudures
People never smile when they drive..?? How Come? 🤨
Hi Ron, sorry to hear you have had bad luck. These Vantrue units seem to work OK.
What a mess. Battery (vs Capacitor) is a really bad design choice by Vantrue.
