    Good video! I have a 2004 Prius that had the hybrid battery Christmas tree come up. I replaced two of the cells for 45$ off eBay. I replaced them at 192,000 a year ago. The car now has over 220,000 on it and still running strong. I would gladly drop a new battery in it when the time comes. I have never owned a car that is so reliable and that hasn’t cost me tons of $$ to maintain. Riding it until it’s wheels fall off. Love the car.

    My 05 crapped out after 11yrs.... 155k.....Dealer quoted me 6k for new pack (said it with a straight face)....Prius forums told me to call Toyota of america.....they took all my info....called me back and said they can help me with cost by slashing the price in 1/2 twice....ending up paying 1600 for new pack. I had a similar deal with an HID headlamp. Dealer wanted $400 (claimed they had to pull off the entire front end of the car). Toyota of America said, "Pay it and send us the bill." Got a check, pronto. Next time it happened (don't flash lights on and off, and some bad ballasts are out there) I got a bulb from eBay for $50 (it's $125 for same Philips bulb at the dealer) and followed a TH-cam video on how to do it in 2 minutes.

    It's extremely important for any Prius owner to understand the battery vent, and particularly so for those that own a Prius C. The Prius C doesn't have the vent intake located up high like the regular Prius. The Prius C battery vent intake is located in the forward side of the rear seat bottom on the driver's side. See your owner's manual. It's not in an ideal location as packages and so forth can block the vent. Also, being located near the floor they will pull up dust from dirty carpeting and dog hair. They do vacuum easily without disassembly if the car is kept clean and the vent is vacuumed each time along with the interior. Anyone receiving a battery hot message (or suspect that the car interior was not always kept clean) needs to remove the cover panel along the front side of the seat (just push-in the center of the round pop tabs) and remove just the panel on the driver's side. (there's two panels that at the bottom seat front) Behind the panel is a fiber vent filter and this needs to vacuumed clean to restore proper air flow to cool the battery. To reinstall the round pop tabs, push the center pin outward on the side you see when installed, insert the pop tab into the panel holes , then lock the tab in place by pushing in the pin so it's flush with the pop tab.

      @@bobbobby2978 The Prius C is the smallest Prius, when Toyota used to have three sizes of Prius. They were discontinued a couple/few years back. Interestingly, after the first few years of production, Toyota changed them to use more gas. I felt that was a move because the C version was becoming too popular and cutting into the market of the regular size Prius. Our Prius C has been a wonderful car.

      That's some great advice. Recently I have been hearing a gurgling sound by the passenger side under the dash i know this has nothing to do with the battery but I have air bubbles coming from the radiator, Holes or reservoir i checked yesterday and the reservoir looks empty! I opened the radiator and it's full i checked the cap and it looks good. Im not a mechanic but I want to try and make it bleed. The engine wasn't overheating no coolant came out of the car when it made this noise also the person I bought it from installed a new water pump! So What is going on here? I dont trust mechanics in my opinion i think most mechanics are scumbags just like used car salesman.
      I know this is off topic but The Government needs to crack down on these people selling duds especially to a single mother with 2 kids who saved up money for years to get a 8,000- 10,000 Dollar car for it to break down after a month. Im not saying all used car salesman are bad but most are. If they won't give me a warranty i will not buy.

It's not as often as when it cools back down, but it seems to be still charging and discharging as normal. I love this little car. Never thought I would own one. I'm not a tree hugger, and don't like the smell of my own farts. But I do like the way this little car works, Smooth and quick in everyday traffic. I romp on mine and it gets over 40mpg. I’ve had a Prius for 10 years. Before I purchased a used Prius, I was skeptical and asked several taxi drivers. They all said their old Prius ran over 400,000 miles and never had an issue with the NiMH battery. As a matter of fact, they all swear you could transfer the battery to another car and run it another 400k miles. They only had to retired the vehicle because all the mechanical and structural parts warn out. Needless to say for the time I had it, no issues at all. Thing to keep in mind is the auxiliary battery is small and needs a bit more monitoring. IE, disconnect auxiliary battery if you’re going to store the Prius for months. Battery naturally drains in non use mode and since it’s a tiny battery, it drains faster. I understand they’ve gone to Lithium for the Prius Prime but I can say I have 100% confidence in the NiMH.

      My grandfather's hybrid Camry battery died around 150,000 miles because his was unfiltered. He installed an aftermarket filter when he replaced the battery, and it's still going strong 200,000 miles after the replacement. Around 350,000 miles the regenerative braking system failed so he finally upgraded to a newer model Camry hybrid.

    Is it normal for the charge to deplete overnight? When I start mine up after letting it sit even for a few hours, it is kind of sluggish and the battery bar shows half full and depletes to one bar by the time I get to the end of my street. It charges back up as I drive after that though.

The battery has been giving me hell recently and I'm guessing it's because the poor car sat in the dude's lot for a few months without any TLC. Everything that you described; the loud fan, the sluggish movement, the check lights -- IT'S ALL HAPPENING. OBD2 apps: There is no "Apple equivalent" - Apple's devices don't support the Bluetooth profile that is required. Can't use an iPhone for this (unless you have a WiFi-OBD2 dongle, but those are expensive).
    As for the error codes: A very low (less than 10V measured without load) 12V battery can also cause the red triangle, VSC light and other errors. Check that before you go buying HV-battery modules or have it replaced entirely (the latter is probably better in the long run).

    • @flagmichael
      @flagmichael 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are several things to check before focusing on the battery. If you have not been using top tier gasoline brands ( www.toptiergas.com/licensed-brands/ ) regularly the fuel injectors are probably fouled. Old spark plugs are on the list as well; your 2009 should be getting the third set of plugs about now. Ditto for the engine thermostat; running a little cool will really drop the fuel economy.
      EDIT - I almost forgot: get the 12V battery checked, too. Not only do they finish dying without much warning, they filter the inverter output more poorly as they age and that can cause poor performance and poor fuel economy.

    I have had three or four battery *events* since I replaced a bad cell whereby, after starting the car and traveling for a few minutes, the battery drains completely within 1 or 2 *minutes* and sometimes faster. I get a warning and the car goes into gas-only mode which makes starting from a dead stop rather slow. The battery tries to charge but doesn't seem to be able to.
    Long story short, it appears to be related to (1) running the air conditioner and (2) only on very hot days - think 90°F (32°C) and above. If I turn off the AC, the battery begins charging again. However, the battery charges to a full charge in just a few *minutes* which is much faster than it seems that it should charge. Furthermore, after the battery is charged, if I turn on the AC, the car runs fine for the remainder of the trip. Weird.
    Given all that, me thimks there is a faulty sensor somewhere that is feeding the computer bad information making it *think* the battery is discharged when, in fact, it may be just fine. I have not gone to the trouble to connect a separate voltage sensor to the battery to find out what it is really doing. Not sure that I will because I have a Tesla Model Y arriving in November to replace my beloved 2005 Prius so I am not all that motivated to put a whole lot of effort into finding out what is really going on. But if I do, I will post something here.

    I couldn't get Torque-Pro to grab the PIDs ("Press ENTER" (Where is Enter?) so I used Dr. Prius. Most important is Internal Resistance. That's where the blockage is. Most Prius owners don't know that if you take all 28 modules to your Toyota dealer parts dept, you can exchange for 28 New Panasonic modules for $1950. For some, this is better than playing "Whack-A-Mole".

    I will have to get app. Mine is an 05 with 400,000 plus miles original battery power up battery has been replace once. I was thinking it should just run on gas when the battery goes dead not the case with mine it stopped one day wouldn't go any further. I had my scanner with me cleared all codes and rebooted and it was fine for months? I know I've got to check futher but does that sound right or not.

    • @timsharpe2419
      @timsharpe2419 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Update something is up with the car it is not the hybrid battery. After 400000 plus miles same hybrid battery I tested all the cells all but one had the voltage it should And I had one that was leaking a little bit of acid. I took a chance and purchased one for $500 276000 miles It had been sitting for 8 months the guy wanted to sell it because it would not pass emissions anymore. I took it needless to say we don't have inspection law and South Carolina anymore we haven't for a long time now. I have the Dr prius app and Torque Pro now both are highly recommended. Dr prius app has you do a number of things including driving the vehicle it does a battery test. It tells you how far of a charge percentage was your battery goes and life expectancy. I ended up taking my battery out of my high mileage vehicle and put it in the cheap one of all and even after all those miles it was 65% of a charge it would go up to and it said it had a 50% life expectancy. So when people tell you the Hybrid batteries should last 200000 miles or so that may be true in some cases but not all. My previous one with the high mileage has so many issues it has 5 or 6 codes on it I was ready to call it done I laugh because that the mileage but after having got this other one and learning more I'm going to challenge my self to fix it. Just fyi. You can't buy any aftermarket parts even good quality ones that compare to what they put on A car at the Factory. My high mileage Prius had 92000 when I got it. It now has the 400000 plus miles on it it's never had a brake job since I've had it, still got the same Serpentin belt and hoses. The only thing that has been done I had to replace the Hybrid water pump had it done at toyota via recall so I had them do the gas wp as well. I told them to go ahead and replace the hoses and Serpenting Belt But they told me they only change those if they are leaking or in belt case bad. I'm surprised they told me that because they teach those guys to sell sell sell. My phone puts capitals in word places sorry about that guys I also have something going on with my left eye and I can't see very good out of it right now I've got to go see a specialist tomorrow so I will Look at this later and do the corrections on my desktop. Sorry for such a long post but I love talking about cars I am and the classics actually but I love what the previous does for me Saves us a lot of Money.

    Reading some of these comments makes me wonder if the problem is caused by a failing cell or is it simply a bad connection that makes the cell look bad? All the more reason to use DeoxIT. I've seen more than a few problems fixed by simply taking something apart and putting it back together again, but that doesn't keep me from taking credit for fixing it ;-)

    • @billb8792
      @billb8792 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know your comment is a year old but for those with the same question--yes, it is definitely possible. The individual cells are connected in sequence with bus bars, which can corrode especially if you live in humid coastal areas with salt air. Removing and cleaning the bus bars would be a good place to start if you see corrosion.

    I just had the red triangle with the exclamation point come up with check engine light and other yellow warning lights last Sunday and the AC went out along with the cruise control. Since it was Sunday many Toyota dealerships were closed. I drove two counties south to get to an open dealership and they said my Hybrid Water Pump was bad. I had them replace it and it cost me an arm and leg! They have a new building and I guess they have to recoup their investment plus it was Sunday too! This just motivates me more to invest in a scan tool and learn more about how to fix these myself! This is the first time I've had this problem so I had no idea what it was? I just bought a slow charger for my 12v battery since I've gone through 4 of them in 11 years. I just put in a replacement of a 4 year battery that lasted only 23 months. My Prius seems to eat these 12v batteries! I also invested into some new spark plugs and two torque wrenches so that when I get to 150,000 miles I'll change them out myself. The quote I got to get the plugs changed at my local Tires Plus was $150. Too rich for me!

      beachbummm69 Yup. The firmware in the computer is calibrated to set the SOC to 80% full and 40% empty. Tesla's are set to 95% Full to 5% Empty. Partial charge and discharge cycles helps extends the battery charge life cycles since you aren't completing a full life circle. Otherwise the batteries would prematurely fail after a few thousand cycles or a few thousand miles.

    • @eman0828
      @eman0828 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      And used batteries are an endless cycle of swapping since its only a temporary fix until another module fails! Only a brand new pack from the dealer is the only way to permantly fix the problem to make it a drivable machine! Its a money pit buying used batteries that can be old as 7 to 10 years old.

    The problem with replacing cells is that if the pack is 10 years old already the other cells are on the cusp of failure as well and have significantly diminished capacity that kills your mpg. so probably better off finding a compatible newer year battery pack from a junk yard.

      My replacement cells worked for about 10k-15k miles or so. The proper way to replace cells is to power balance the whole pack as 1 unit, which I didn't do. But I'm still happy with how many miles I got out of it.
      As far as your problem goes, have you tried jumping the 12v battery or checking the voltage? There isn't much load on the 12v battery when trying to start it, I don't see how 5 attempts could drain it so quickly.

Still running very strong, fingers crossed. One thing I found was important, and it caused me to have to disassemble and reassemble my battery the first time I rebuilt it because it still acted like it was failing with the replacement modules installed, was it is real important to clean and recondition your battery bus bars and their terminals, and also to properly torque them down to the recommended specifications. Perfect modules, etc, will still act bad if the bus bars are not torqued and conducting properly.

    Thank you thank you! This helped me a lot. My partner’s 05 just had a reconditioned pack put in 8 months ago and that stupid Christmas tree came on. I nearly had a heart attack. It ran down quickly the night before but was holding a solid charge up until then. It only goes down to purple when we sit with the AC or loud music on for 15+ minutes. But when he normally drives it’s almost always at green and when accelerating, it maybe loses one or two bars. Never more than that. I had detailed the car and added some small interior lights and my guess is that since I let it sit with the ignition on and the ac on that I drained it so low that it tripped the system. Cleared the codes and it hasn’t done it since. I’m going to have a pro look at the cells and see if there are any failing ones and just have him install the ones I bought.

I measured the aux battery with my digital meter showed as follow: Complete isolated aux battery stand alone 13.86 V. When the aux batter is connected to the Hybrid Batter with the engine key off the A/B reads 15.63V. When car parked and engine key is on and the generator is running in display the A/B terminal reading is 18.98 V. When the Engine key is on but the generator in the display stopped the A/B voltage is 19.37 V. When the generator comes running the A/B voltage is 19.20 V. When the engine key is completely off and generator is off the A/B showed 19.28 V. What could be wrong with my Hyb and Aux batteries? Is my Aux batter cells are all dead as the dealer says?
