    Sound & unbiased advice Jim.👍
We have a small Crossover EV & a large petrol estate car.
For us it was a no brainer to get an EV & use it for all the local & medium distance round trips up to 250 miles. Biggy for me was being able to charge it from home. I wouldn't have got an EV if we couldn't charge it from home & in 10 months of ownership we've not used a public charger yet.
My wife drives the EV in the main although we both use it as the "go to" vehicle if we are out together because it's so much cheaper to run. My petrol estate car gets used for longer trips, dump runs & holidays when we need the extra space & don't want any charging or range issues.
Switching one petrol car to an EV has saved us around £1,500pa in fuel cost alone which has paid for the home charger, & some. In fact it's probably saved us even more because my petrol car doesn't get used anywhere near as much as it used to & servicing cost on the EV is much less. We bought the EV (a Kona 64kWh) as a 1 year old used car (22 plate) with 5k on the clock for half of it's price when new & we got a very reasonable trade in on my wife's old petrol Karoq. The cost to change was only a few £k & the Kona still has nearly 3 years of warranty left on it. Although the old Karoq was a great car, my wife prefers the smaller dimensions & faster accelerating Kona. Happy wife, happy life!!

As you say Jim, if you can home charge and your daily drive is less than 200 miles for 99% of the time then an EV is a no brainier……that said would I buy one with my own cash, not a chance but would I get a lease or company car, absolutely. Keep up the great work 👍

I drive 40 miles per day. I granny charge on a 3 pin plug my Mg5 at night using a weatherproof socket I had fitted. The socket itself is controlled using the Google home app or Alexa because the car doesn’t have a decent stop start app or timer. It works really well. I have an edf ev deal which gives 8p per kWh for 5 hours every night. The whole house can use cheap electricity so we set the dishwasher and washing machine to come on about 4am so they finish before 6am and it’s only 8p/kwh rather than near 30p.
A good system for anyone thinking of charging a car who only does about 50 miles per day

Found this very honest as an EV owner myself for 8 years. I'm a very low user ( 5000 miles a year ) so the savings are not the main reason, they are just great to drive, instant shove when you need it, quiet and relaxing when you don't. Have a Tesla so no servicing every year which is just an earner for the dealers. Not convinced that getting an Octopus deal works for everyone as the electricity may well be cheaper in the middle of the night but dearer during the day though I'm prepared to be put right.

Great video. You mention insurance. When I had a Zoe ZE40 it cost a lot more to insure than the SLK I now own! It pretty much wiped out the benefit of £0 road tax. The Zoe was very cheap to service though (tell the dealer you don't want the pollen filter changed and it saves quite a lot off the service - you can buy and fit one yourself for less than £10 if you feel you really need one). I did 18k miles in the Zoe and didn't need tyres in that time (front were wearing a bit but rear still like new). I also noticed the wheels didn't get dirty because nearly all of my braking was regen and the friction pads were rarely used.

I ran an Ioniq 5, 58kWh battery, for 11 months with no home wall box! I would say it's definitely doable to run a car with a circa 50kWh battery off a 'granny' if you do around 30 miles a day....
We had a 3 pin plug installed in our garden to allow it to be used as part of having the garden done.

Hi Jim, greetings from Oxford. Just found your channel, you earned a sub from me! I went to EV in September 2019 with a BMW i3, in the time between ordering and receiving the car, I remember the anxiety I felt about my decision. It will be 5 years in September, I still have the same car and I have no regrets making the change. I do charge at home on an overnight tariff, and this is the most significant consideration when making the shift to BEV. In nearly 5 years I used public charging 6 times, even with the modest range of the i3, it is plenty for my needs. When I get in a combustion car now, it feels very strange, noisy, smelly, so unresponsive in both speeding up and slowing down. Unless you really like using a clutch and gear lever, an EV is a sublime driving experience. I am nearly 60 YO, my first car was a 1974 Renault 12TS, I’ve owned lots of cars in my time, I would not chose to go back to combustion.

Very balanced and fair overview. One point, there are many two household cars with a low mileage "second car" " local journeys take the kids to school type of thing where a s/h EV around £10-£15k would be a step into EV (should that need replacing) without having to bite the bullet of the fear of long range say 200 mile plus journeys.

I purchased a six month old Volvo C40 with less than 200 miles recorded for £44,950 against a list price just under £60,000. This is my 4th E V and they cost me nothing to charge because I do a small annual mileage and just charge it using a 13 amp plug when the sun is on my solar panels. In some ways I like it more than the BMW i4 m50 I sold because the entertainment is user friendly and I don't have to cancel the lane changing warning each time I set off. Many people who cannot home charge find that - especially as infrastructure is there….over 60,000 public chargers, by the way - because we *like* the tech, the drive, the environmental benefits, the relaxation of a multi-hundred mile drive without headache and fatigue… well EV still works very, very well.

@@Hell-Hound1 OK, I understand that cold weather and the use of lights, heater and wipers etc impacts that range though? However I like to take a least a 15 minute break, probably a couple, in a journey of that length. I'm trying to get a flavour of how convenient EVs are, as I'm sure you, and every sensible person does. Convenience is key, if anything is hard, complicated or difficult to use then it won't catch on. Fair enough, we rarely do long trips, but if called upon obviously we want our car to be ready and waiting to do it, otherwise what's the point. Cars have offered the masses the independenceto go wherever and whenever, as I'm sure you can appreciate. So if you've a diesel or petrol then a five minute stop and your good, I don't want to be messing about trying to charge my car. As I mentioned I take a break on longer trips that could be used to charge, as long as it's sensible and not two minutes down the road. Thanks.

@@rob5944 OK for your short notice long journey, just keep your EV charged at 50 or 60%. Even in colder temp. 3-5 degrees at motorway speeds that's a range of 140+ miles. As you've stated you need to take a break on longer journeys. So you've driven for 2 hours +, you stop and charge for 10-20 mins. while having a pee and or a drink. That will add 100-150+ miles of range. You could of course charge higher, drive longer and go even further if needed.

If there is enough time to charge your car, Octopus will charge at 7.5p at any time of the day. So, for example if I plug in at 10.30 in the morning but tell the charger I want to add 30% by 5 in the evening, it will find those points during the day to charge at 7.5p. It will charge full price if you tell it to charge on demand.

Hi Jim another excellent video and I agree with all of your comments. I would like to add a couple more if that's okay. Nearly all EV's are automatics and generally have more tech in them so, you need to be comfortable with both an auto gearbox and things like regenerative braking. I've mentioned towing before because of the impact on range not an issue for us as we only have a small trailer which is used for local journeys. However, not all EV's especially on the second hand market can have a towbar fitted. Finally, while EV's are kinder to the planet, they also are not affected by disruption to the oil supply- no queuing at garages and, if you have solar panels you are also insulated from increases in electricity prices.

We started off leasing ev’s, but back in March did a new lease on a very cheap ORA, and have now purchased a 21 plate ID4 first edition through Volkswagen approved on cheap finance, gone for the 77kw edition rather than a newer smaller battery model because felt the range of the bigger battery would be nearer to the minimum range accepted in about 4 years time when the finance ends. Just trying to future proof the car but feel that I have the best balance now and it looks like used ev’s will just keep on going and it will be bodywork and chassis that will fail first rather than the battery, and the cheapest used ev will always be worth more than an equivalent ice car as the value and application of the battery will hold some residual value.

👍👍👍 There may very well be a huge much needed improvement in the infrastructure. However for those who don't have the benefit of off road parking it is still nowhere near adequate. Consider a row of terraced houses one hundred homes down one side of the road and another on the other side. Front doors open straight out onto a narrow pavement. Assuming each owner is able to park outside their own home and each home has a cable from the house to the car, the insurance claims from trips and falls would be unsustainable, those homes would be unlikely to be able to insure against the hazards. So the investment in infrastructure needs massive investment. Thanks Jim

Yes, that’s the single biggest problem in my view, home or workplace charging availability for the masses. If you are considering an ev please lease or buy a car with a good over 300 miles range to not suffer range anxiety and have plenty of scope to pick where if ever you need to charge enroute on a journey . The new Renault Scenic has a range of 378 miles and at less than 40k it seems to be a good long range vehicle for extended trips if you do that sort of mileage or consider leasing for the next couple of years to see how the future cars are being progressively improved and car prices are determined

The price of the cars are still way to expensive for a family car and yes the range is crap because we are used to fuelling a car that can give even a small city car 300 miles and not 100 at a push, the tec on the cars is more than we need as in like a normal ice with a radio and buttons nice and simple, I'm still on the fence but rep's I speak to say they only have the ev for tax purposes otherwise they would be in a petrol or diesel in a flash due to the infrastructure and time lost.

Hi, there.I'm a private hire driver in London.I live in a flat, I would like to get a Tesla model.Y But the mirror is stating that he wants to charge electric car 5 to 6 pence per mile instead of the standard car tax. It's gonna cost private hire.Drivers are fortune to run the car. What do you think of this.

I think that when the time comes they’ll screw petrol and diesel cars even further. Trying to second guess the politicians is a mugs game really as they’ll go back on every word and do the opposite at the drop of a hat (or drop of a vote).

For me Jim, you've highlighted so many good things for the Ev but, I'm still not sold on them. The whole Ev market for me is a scam. It's Ok to say you'll save money running the vehicle but, it's costing a small fortune to save a few pounds. Tax per mile is only just around the corner and as I see it, the equation is now so bad for the consumer. Ev's are so expensive and second hand values have dropped so much for so many reasons. I could go on and on but, I'm sure you see where I'm coming from. The plusses and minuses may be a long video to make but, it'll be a good one to watch ?
Keep up the good work and hope you get to 50k soon !

Some people were daft enough to BUY a brand new £100-£150k EV rather than lease it; it's a fact that most cars lose >40% of their value within the first 2 years and cars which are so susceptible to improving technology are even more likely to do so. I dare say he'd have lost 50% less if he'd leased the car rather than buying it but also would guess he's made more than the entire value of the car with videos slating what is his second EV (from what I'm told). I've seen a few clips of things that people have sent me from one or two channels where they're plain untruthful or spun in a certain to make a video get clicks. Question why.
I may not choose to watch some of that content personally but fair play to all of them, they're no doubt doing far better than me as a result of it.
Now you could flip the whole thing on it's head and think what a great time it is to get yourself into a 3 year old Porsche for £40k
I've said since day one that you should lease new EVs and buy used ones - here's a video I made about it 2 years ago th-cam.com/video/H6M-OWdw4KM/w-d-xo.html

The society of motor manufacturers and engineers say that 700 chargers per day need to be installed. That's 2.3 million by 2030, moreover one estimate put electricity demand up by at least a quarter, 40% if one includes commercials. Furthermore we need to be able to distribute it and cater for people who cannot charge at home. So what, I've already got one? Well this may well affect you because if EVs fall out of favour then it's Betamax VCR time.

Home chargers are not big in terms of investment or draw and lots are being run on solar. The need for public chargers will be far more for 7/22kw in the long run with fast chargers only really needed on major roads. Infrastructure has never been an issue for me to date but I am lucky to have a home charger; it’s those folks without those that need solutions (lamppost chargers seem like a halfway decent solution but councils have to get onboard).

People who criticise EV's, just don't know what they're talking about. We have two. They are easy to drive, cheap to run, and cost little to maintain. The only problem I have, is if you corner them a bit too fast, they tend to fly off the track and often end up under the settee. 😉

Manchester to Glasgow. Need to charge 2 times on the way there, adds about 1-2 hour to the already long journey. Could be longer if it’s busy and EV cars are hovering around the stations. But apart from that love um.

Perhaps consider a different car. I did Guildford to Edinburgh in a Tesla Model Y LR and it added 25 mins to the round trip of 1100 miles. We didn’t charge overnight once but plugged in every time we stopped for toilet of drinks etc. I guess a lot depends on the range of your bladder and how often you make those kinds of trips too.

If you're considering getting an EV talk to friends who have one, don't listen to anti-EV clickbait youtubers or the media. The money-makers make too much money from oil and are trying to slow the EV transition down.
If you can't charge at home or work I wouldn't consider an EV yet. Public charging is too expensive, it works out to cost the same as an ICE car. I have never used a public charger, not once.
There are circumstances where an EV won't suite....towing a caravan or if you regularly do high daily mileage.
I wouldn't bother with a hybrid. Owners seem to focus on the EV capabilities of them. They have a battery range of about 30 miles. Hybrids will soon become a forgotten idea as EVs become more common.
Driving an EV is much nicer than an ICE car. They have instant torque available and generally accelerate like sporty ICE cars. They are cheaper to run. I do 300 miles at a cost of about £5.50... and of course EVs are much cleaner.
If you can charge at home....get an EV!

@12:15, where's ya proof? Am interested in that video. I can easily say that a certain person I'll call 'Q' is paid to spout EV stuff only and to hate ICE and yet have no proof there either. It's a no brainer for a business, however it's nothing like for me who can't home charge and yet will still be forced into buying one as the years roll on. And don't be naive about electricity costs and tax soaring once EV's take over. They'll hammer them the same as always. Also, people do have different experiences you know. That is allowed! Just because one person has a superb journey, doesn't mean someone else wont' have a charging or queueing nightmare on their run. I am sick of this EV vs ICE bollox. Just buy what you want and enjoy it. But right now, there is no impetus whatsoever to get me into an EV and I actually want the Model Y. 👍🏻

Obviously I have no proof but the PR campaign is obvious to anyone I would have thought, I think Quentin and one or two others are trying to fight the other corner to balance things a bit. I personally don't have a dog in the fight, I like CARS, there's some great electric stuff out there and some dross - just like there has always been with any car. I just hate all the BS and wish people would live and let live - which I think is a point I made in this video (and plenty of others).

@@DefinitelyNotAGuru not sure on that yet as I've not watched enough of yours to form that opinion, however you are showing your business side of ownership which is far different than a personal side in terms of cost and tax benefits so it's bound to be better. But there is a lot to be said about having EV's rammed down our throats by the Gov when there is no incentive to own one and a shit, expensive infrastructure with no set connectors; costs; app's and all of them working against each other. It's about time if the Gov was serious about it they'd work with the elec companies and adopt the same standards across all charges. One charging connector, be that CCS or the UK equivalent of NACS; one app that will cover multiple charges; cards if required for when the phone signal is no good so you can't load up the apps. There is so much the Gov should be doing if they really thing EV's are the way to go, however like usual the UK is shit as moving forward and just plays at it for a bit, leaving the rest of us to deal with their inability to sort things out.
