Purchased a new car last week, agreed the price i was happy with. I said that if you want to close the deal now do you want to add a sweetener to avoid me going home and thinking about it. The sales man said I had got the best deal there was no more. I came back and said if you agree to give me a full tank of fuel I will give you the deposit here and now, he went off and to speak to his boss and came back a few moments later with a yes, sometimes i just cannot help myself pushing the limits. The Mrs just hides with embarrassment

You did well at that, my mother once stalled on an empty tank, brand new car five miles from the dealership. Enough to get her to the next station. True story.

@@VictorMaxol That was unlucky, hopefully you mum stalled in a safe place (if there is such a thing these days). It surprises me just how mean some car dealers can be with fuel. Years ago i never had to ask for a full tank. you got that as a given.

@@steamhammer2k Many years ago! The car gave a little jerk but we hadn't far to go. She complained later to the dealer and they apologised saying it was an after sight.
At the root of it was she had gone to a Toyota dealer much further away than a few others so I guess he was suspicious he was giving her too good of a deal. He was, but only by a few pounds.

If more people did this they would get a better deal .How many these days just walk in and say .....I want to spend so much a month ,as the sales guy tries to hide a set smile !

Some great tips. Having seen my parents get caught with the so called “ceramic coating” I’d suggest using a local detailing company. Was a complete waste of £499 on a Ford Puma! Lasted months not years. Top tips !

    • @DefinitelyNotAGuru
      @DefinitelyNotAGuru  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yeah, some of those products they use are junk and unless you know how to care for a car with a coating most people will wash it off within weeks.

Great video - some great tips there.
I would say a few more things:
Don’t necessarily trade your old car in to the dealer from which you buy the new one - somebody else (a car buying servicing, or another dealer) may offer you a better price.
If you have outstanding finance on your old car, have a settlement figure ready from your finance provider. Should be easy enough to ask for this from them.
A trader will still by the car, and settle the finance out of the proceeds.
If you are offered money off for taking their finance, but don’t wish to take it, you can still take the finance, and settle it straight away.
Always finish your negotiations with ‘can you throw in a free service? Can you throw in a set of mats? Can you throw in a full tank of fuel?’ Don’t expect to get them all, but one or two of them could be useful to sweeten the deal.

If the budget is 100k, from savings
Can I get car that is for sale at 110k now
      For 100k,
      10k off list price
That same car has been for sale at the dealership for 4 months
      Price was 120k
      Then 115k
      Now 110k
Deal to be completed end of Feb

I bought a used Volvo 8 years ago. Nice car, top spec. It was up at £8.5k. I asked if he would take £8? After a bit of thinking he said yes, so I then asked if that included the warranty? Yes, he says, that includes the bronze level. Hmm, I said, you include the Gold level and I will do the deal. Best thing I ever did. Crack discovered in the windscreen, and solenoids failed in the vents under the dash. Dash out job that would have cost me a grand. The Volvo dealership doing the work tried to get me to pay as they said that the warranty company would never cough up. Well they did cough up without any problem.

Good tips mate. Another one for you. Don't buy another car before selling your current one. About 25 years ago I ended up paying twice on insurance & tax & had to sell the replaced car at a rock bottom price to get shut of it. I haven't made that mistake again.

A few times I’ve gone with the cash and took the finance because of the incentives. I then settled the finance within 14 days with no penalty. I use ALA for gap and a local renowned detailer for the coatings etc.
I always do my homework as this simply saves time and money.

Great content! I’ve always found the dealership GAP insurance vastly overpriced and always buy online it saves hundreds of pounds and is equally as good, and some are recommended by Which.

All excellent tips and I agree with them all. I would also add the 'end of the month' advice too - not always the case of course, but it works for you anyway, always go in to the dealer on a weekday during the last week of the month - they may have a quota/target they need to achieve for that month and may be more willing to negotiate on price if they still have that target to hit.

What I always say if I don’t get the deal I want and they ask for my phone number is “right now I’m trying to buy this car from you, when you call you’re going to have to sell it to me - good luck” 😁

It's money you're payign upfront that you may never use (let's say circumstances change and you sell the car in 18 months) so it would have to be an astonishing deal for me to go for one. If it's offered "free" by the salesperson, just ask for a cash discount instead.

Be aware of why a dealership might be offering a 0% APR deal on an HP or PCP deal - usually those deals are on cars that have sat around for ages unloved and unwanted or a spec nobody would order. I recently saw a franchised dealer offering 0% PCP deals on “new” EVs but close examination / questioning revealed that they were the much derided pre-facelift cars that were available for immediate delivery and the deal wasn’t available on the latest improved version………….

Some good points in your video - Thanks. Many car sales people seem obssessed with trying to sell lots of services along with the car - frankly I dont want any of these and it can get rather tiresome - I know that's where they can make a lot of extra money but there wasting their time with me! I much prefer a "cut to the chase" approach where we just talk about the price of the car!

One I've used is to go alone and then when the final offer is on the table just say " I've got to make sure the wife's ok with it" . and then leave . If it's not right you'll know by either taking time to reflect or the offer is withdrawn when you call it wasn't meant to be.

A friend of mine who's a car dealer loves to hear these magic words from a potential customer as they walk into the showroom. " I'm not buying today, just looking". 90% of the time he gets a sale.

Tell them you’ll take their pcp finance in exchange for some free services or better price and then cancel it when the paperwork comes through in your cancellation period and get a private loan like a sensible person
