    Quick Video on how to replace the rear brake pads on the 1st Generation Ford fusion! Very easy and quick job. There are other steps I could have taken such as replacing the rotors as well but I was instructed not to as this car was being sold the next day. I will have a video on how to replace the rear brakes coming up in a couple days as well!

    If you have electronic rear emergency brakes on a 2016 ford fusion you are not going to be able to just screw the caliper piston in all the way. You must put the car into "emergency brake maintenance mode" to do this watch this video. 2016 Ford Fusion rear brakes with EPB. This guy saved my butt.

    Many people don't know, ford implemented a brake maintenance mode for the rear brakes, theres no need for that tool or any tool, TH-cam how to turn it on, and the piston can be pushed down with your thumbs, makes life incredibly easy!

    Useful video. Bought disc tool for $13. Didn’t need it. Learned from comments to use Ford Service Mode. That put the electric parking brake in a state where a gentle squeeze with a c-clamp easily compressed the caliper plunger.

    Make sure to put it in brake maintenance mode before taking off the wheels and always remember to lube those “caliper guides”, That’s the main reason the brakes go out so fast

    • @WheresWaldo05
      @WheresWaldo05 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The main reason brake pads wear out fast is due to buying aftermarket brake pads that wear out at best 50% of the stock/oem brake pads life capacity. Also if the rotors have defects in them. And lastly the caliper cylinders sticking so the pads are always or partially engaged.

They said that they would repair it for $475.00 but I told them I would wait a little while. My question is, what is that tool you had to screw the piston back in and where can I get one. You do not want to screw in the rear caliper piston on a ford car, ford says do not screw in caliper piston. On a Ford with an electric parking brake per Ford you need to place car in brake maintenance mode, a very simple process no special equipment required. Once you do that the rear caliper piston is easily compressed even by hand or with screwdriver or small pry bar. If you’re going to make a how to video you should at least look at the ford service manual for the car. Lot’s of TH-cam videos showing how to put you electric parking brake car into brake maintenance mode.

      You won't need the wind back tool that looks like a cube. You will need something to push the caliper pistons back, a C-Clamp pushing on the old brake pads works fine, use slow, even pressure and be sure both pistons are moving equally.

  • @toltec13
    @toltec13 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't understand why the rear piston needs to be rotated back in the caliper. Then you drive a car and apply the brakes, the piston moves outward , pushing the brake pad on the disc. I've always gently pressed in the piston using the old brake pad and a C-clamp.

      Dan McCoy I have done many rear brake jobs on this same car. Never put them in any service mode. If you have read that it’s required then by all means go for it. This video is not the Bible. It will give people an overall idea as to what they are in for. I will check the link. However this method has worked a minimum 20 times so far without an issue.

    I had always made the brake fluid reservoir cover loose before compressing the piston. Should I leave it tight?

    I can’t get the screws unloose even with the tight tool it’s like it’s locked up

    Why did you not add any grease where the brakes sit in the caliper bracket?

    just changed out my rear pads on 2017 fusion, theres no way to change pads and get clearance for new ones just turning in piston, its has to be pushed back in unless your changing out new pads for new pads

    So I could only get the piston to go back in 6 or 8 turns , leaves me 1/4 inch short of getting new pads on. Any help.

    If I needed to replace the rear rotor, what size socket/ torx etc. would I need to remove the brake pad bracket?
    Great video, thank you!

      Honestly not sure of the exact size. It may not be a torx but rather a normal hex head bolt. If it’s like any fords of the past it is most likely a 15mm bolt

    I do not believe that's the correct procedure. You need to put the vehicle is in "Maintenance Mode" and it will allow the pistons to be pushed in (not screwed in). At least that's what Ford's procedure says. When you're done, you take the vehicle out of maintenance mode and the parking brake will work normally.

    I'm curious, does disconnecting the EPB plug make it so you do not have to put the vehicle into maintenance mode as it would no longer be electronically connected to the wiring system? Thanks. Peace, John

    • @HelpingHandAutoRepair
      @HelpingHandAutoRepair  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Hutchison Hi John. Actually as you will have noticed in the film, I did not put the car in maintenance mode. I simply used the tool mentioned (the brake cube tool) to spin the piston back into the caliper. I did NOT have the brake in the on position. I have it turned OFF in this video.

    • @johnhutchison9782
      @johnhutchison9782 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      At 0:57 the EPB did get disconnected, correct? Or did you just move the wires out of your way? Several other videos make it seem like the maintenance mode needs to happen or all hell could "brake" loose (pun intended) It would seem that if the EPB wiring was unplugged, there would be no chance of it engaging during the pad/rotor change process. Thanks! Peace, John

      John Hutchison sorry for the delayed response. At 0:57 I did just move the wire to the side as I stated. I did not disconnect the wire.

    What? I just did one on a 2014. this has an electric parking brake. you would have to reset the brakes back. otherwise you could damage the electric motor. I'm just wondering how you didn't damage that.

    Do I need to reset the parking break to change my rear pads on my 2013 Ford fusion EcoBoost?

    • @HelpingHandAutoRepair
      @HelpingHandAutoRepair  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rob Dimichele Not sure what you mean by reset the break. Make sure the parking brake IS NOT on before you start working on the rear brakes. Otherwise you won’t be able to spin the caliper piston back into the caliper.
