This video is basically a timeline plotting when Chibnall developed each fault in his writing that is continually criticized to this day. Like, early on in the video, he would only make one mistake we currently see lobbied at him, but getting into Series 7 the mistakes get mixed and matched each episode. I just realized this when watching the Power of Three segment as the episode has both the "overstuffed plot with too many ideas" and the "stopping the episode to ask the companions how they feel" tropes. It is kinda fascinating.
Looking back Dinosaurs on a spaceship is the format most episodes from his era follow. I think I have nostalgia from Day One be a because I watched it when I was young (about 10) and I was overwhelmed by the fact that I was watching a mature show
1:29:00 i do give some benefit of doubt to Power of Three because in interviews since then it turns out the actor playing the Shakri was really uncooperative and judy left during filming so the end quarter of thr episode was stitched together using what footage they got and last minute rewrites
54:23 I figured the reason he was so determined to work for Jack was because of his girlfriend, he needed the Torchwood hub, Torchwood connections, alien science, space to put the big machine and all that to save her
Moffat wrote some great episodes but was a terrible leader. Chibnall wrote some of the worst episodes so...maybe by that logic he'll be a great leader...maybe?
I imagine if you travelled back in time to 1969 and told someone the idiot who gave us The Krotons and The Space Pirates would go on to become the most beloved writer in Doctor Who history they'd tell you to get stuffed...
Moffat was a terrible leader? He was a genius and managed to earn the largest rating BBC America ever had for Dr Who. Guess the UK just didn't get the jokes.
@@enorth7301 nope End of Time was highest (Russel Era) And nope the show went from 7 mil viewers in Season 5 to 4 mil viewers in season 10. He nearly killed the show. He killed Sherlock with a god awful 4th Series.
@@lewisdavidson571 To be frank, I feel that Moffat got overworked and whatever growth he had as a writer (which may be, as Stubsgful puts it, dealing with grief) were limited by the fact he had to write a number of stories and overarching stories at the same time that didn't play on his strengths. This is why I'm cautiously optimistic for the Dracula production, as grief and the fear of loss are the impotis for action in the later half of the story, and Moffat will be able to limit his work load. Still, take my words with as much salt as you like.
I think the thing that makes Chibnall’s writing more compelling for me is that he really understands the Doctor’s character in a way I appreciate, and he seems to know how to incorporate a common theme really well into the narrative of each of his Who episodes. Something I picked up on in each of his who stories but especially 42 and Cold Blood is a constant push/pull of the Doctor’s inherent idealism and other characters’ inherent cynicism. Sometimes the idealism wins out (to the point that the cynical character will then have to reassure the Doctor in a moment of need) and sometimes it doesn’t, but it’s an interesting through line for the person in charge of this show to be thinking about in more than abstract terms. Also, I just think that for as much as stuff like 42 or the Silurian story is *structured* very basically, the central premise is unique enough that I always prefer them to more basic base under siege plots that we tend to get.
This may be wishful thinking on my behalf, but _maybe_ this kind of by-the-book professionalism is what DW needs right now. We've learnt from Moffat that giving someone with a back-catalogue of great one-off story ideas doesn't necessarily mean that they will be a good showrunner. Let the safe pair of hands build the foundations and then give the Moffat-types limited supervised play within its confines. "Yes, you can make a magic memory monster that people can only remember when looking at them, but no, the series finale won't reveal that the Doctor ends up being her own mother and the companion turns out to have started the universe by creating the big bang via a magic time baby they had because they did it in the TARDIS." - _The BBC_
I'll give the added humor in this a 9 out of 10. Well done! The thing about "42", for instance, is that I only very vaguely remember it. Weren't the characters running around, getting sweaty & dirty faced, in the space ship/base, "in corridors?! Chibnall, the younger, would be appalled. I'd put his writing, his showrunning down as mechanical. The pieces are there, sometimes too many, unnecessarily, some poorly used. His moments of near brilliance, few. Some of his writing, a bit appealing. As showrunner? Meh? I'll watch the next season, I know you're a fan, we'll hope for better. We may well not see that better until he's gone. Enjoyed the review!
This isn't related to Chibnall per-se, but I'm beginning to think I've got my own Mandela Effect occurring and could use some help. When I first saw Exit Wounds on broadcast TV, when the radiation hit the control room, I remember Owen uttering this ghastly guttural nightmare fuel scream that lasted a distressingly long time. When I watched it again rather recently on Amazon, though, the scream was completely absent. Am I going bonkers? Did I briefly enter the rift during the broadcast air and come out slightly mad?
1:11:32 YES OH PLEASE YES THAT WOULD BE SO AWESOME!!! And we've also got to see what the Ice Warrior society was like. Preferably before they even got their armour. And then you could link Silurians, Ice Warriors and Draconians somehow. And then I'd love to see more of the Ood society, the Sensorite society and the society that the Teller creatures would create once they've developed.
Though I like some of the Chibnall episodes you dislike, I agree with you for the most part and am too optimistic for the new era of the show :) also those podcast segments with the 5WF was fucking hilarious mate! I follow all of you write a lot but would love to hear more commentaries like this! Is it a regular thing you guys do and i've just missed it? Because you're all so engagingly funny when you make fun of the episode as I feel it takes a real fan to be able to laugh at and make fun of their favourite thing, most in the fanbase are too defensive and just wanted to say how much i enjoy those cynical sarcastic punches thrown at our favourite campy sci-fi universe ;D Awesome video as a whole i'd so make! One of you're best!
Cheers man :) Yeah Richard introduced me to Billy and Jon back in 2014 over skype and I've shown up on podcasts with them occasionally but it was earlier this year when I was thinking about putting together a chibnall overview when realised I needed to rewatch everything, so I decided to get Jon, Billy & Richard involved with just day one and cyberwoman at first, because I knew they were rubbish episodes and laughing at them together might be funny, and we had such a great time we ended up doing the whole lot and I folded the commentaries into this video. We definitely wanna do something like this again at some point. I've never seen Torchwood Miracle Day for example so that might be an idea
That's funny as i got into both your channels at separate times but yes, as an audience member for you and the guys, i'd definitely want to watch more videos like this doing comedic overviews of seasons/writers' work! Its a great idea and you're all funny guys. I've always wanted to hear your opinion on Miracle Day as I know most of us (the fans) then to hate it and love Children of Earth (I was one of those people). But i re-watched Miracle Day recently and I definitely enjoyed it way more the 2nd time round, I do feel the finale spits in the face of Doctor Who but still I feel like Jack and Gwen as characters are taken to such incredible places that i think you might enjoy! Or hate, either way, i'd love to hear it ;D (also not to be one of those annoying "hey look at me stuart! like me! I'm just like you!" type of fans, but i recently started making content again for this channel and would love your opinion on my kind of videos so if you're not too busy eating chris morris' jam maybe you could give one of my videos a watch?) Also i'm with Billy, i cried overtime in that finale ;D and everything you guys asked I laughed even harder! Because that's what it's all about.... family.
You never saw Miracle Day? I mean it wasn't amazing or anything but you'd think if you had gotten this far you might as well finish the last season. I'd go with Richard's suggestion and watch CLASS. It won't take you that long and lot of good stuff to mock.
I dunno, I just got to the end of Children of Earth when it first aired and thought it was a really strong end for the series as a whole and was satisfied. I heard rumblings about the next series happening and when it came out I didn't even realise it was on cause it had moved to America, it was pretty much over by the time I'd heard about it and people were telling me it wasn't that good so I couldn't be arsed and kept putting off and putting off and here we are now.
Stubagful I fully agree with the finality of children of earth, however I think when you watch Miracle Day, you'll see (maybe) that it does have somewhat of a reason to exist, like there is a story there and there are unresolved issues between Jack and Gwen and they understand each other more than ever, like there's a whole episode that's just basically them in a car alone and their convocation real makes each say things that they've never said and what you wouldn't think how far they've come and how different they are as people now. And also I agree you guys should do Class! That would be hilarious!
Fragments mention Lissa (the cyber girlfriend) with Ianto trying to get Jack to think she was dead ya just missed it and it also mentioned Suzie (the one who got shot in the first one)
At 5:49 she attempts to channel Zoolander, and his "Le Tigre" pose. Failed miserably, she will NEVER have that level of sassy. Either that, or she is trying to ape Billy Idol's sneer.
Very good point about Hungry Earth/Cold Blood it did have interesting characters, actors, little bits of ideas and dynamics but they were all very quickly moved on from and severely underdeveloped resulting in it being somewhat bland and forgettable two-parter and still a slog to get through on a rewatch.
How come people notice the red MRI scanner but no one notices that the human bakery pods from the dalek ship in bad wolf/ parting of the ways and the same as the clone pods in new earth, 2 episodes later
Chitnell owns a Chinese Rolex. Also the episode where Jack died I turned it off thinking that was the cliffhanger. So, it went on for another 15-30 minutes... Hmm. Ok. Glad I missed it.
I still really like Chibnall’s Doctor Who stuff, and I even think Day One is an ok episode given what a lemon the basic premise is. I enjoyed the snuggly Chibnall time, but I’m still confident I’m going to enjoy his run.
I would make it so that the aliens get so insulted by the fact that the humans don't want to buy their product that they go on a rampage, and the Doctor has to persuade social media people to promote the cubes and say how awesome they are so the aliens go home.
On the whole, I feel worried but optimistic about Chibnall's New Reign. Before that though, this riffing review of Chibnall's work was funny and well-done! Props to you for editing down hour-long portions of this whole thing! Especially considering that you had to sit through the more...what's the word? AH, yes: *Shit* parts of his products (and not the ones from his glowing-reviews sweat shop) in small doses while editing. Anyway, on to Chibnall's Candidly Composed and Created Crafts. I enjoyed 42, but after 10 got possessed and it went nowhere I lost most of my interest. T fact that the (le gasp) *Sentient* Sun was attacking them because they took a part of it was a nice twist, but still hollow when it just stopped altogether. An average story that looks pretty (not like the simple lighting after Series 4.) Now I *really* liked the Silurian two-parter! At *first.* Then I saw (DW &) The Silurians. I just shifted all my love over to that since it's the original that it copied plot-point-for-plot-point. Doesn't help that it's one of the best (if not the) best Silurian Stories alongside The Sea Devils & Bloodtide in my opinion. Also, I hated the Mom character. Her actions make sense, which is good since it means he can do some, at least, decent characterization, but it felt like an irrational person *pretending* to be a caring mother to me. Though the 1st Part is better than the 2nd, which is the representation of a straight dive from a climax. Overall, slightly-above average. Pond Life: Meaningless; a few chuckles; barely any context for the empty joy of Asylum of The Daleks; could be skipped and not much would change for the viewer's comprehension. Below average. Dinosaurs (DeeNnnaAA) on a Spaceship. Average. Brian...At least I think that's his name, and Rory are probably the best parts of the episode while everything else is pretty much distraction or filler until *one* action, **one,** resolves everything. Pretty meh. OH, wait, Silurian Ark... Don't know why they would want to go into space if they want to reclaim their planet in future but eh, Space Silurians evolved beyond recognition being the Baddie Of The Week would be a good twist. Silurians vs. Ice Warriors or the two working together would be cool too. Preferably back when that old Global Silurian Empire with the different classes (which apparently explain the different Silurian Types in Classic & New Who) was still around. The Power Of Three. I forgot this existed until it popped up in the video. Nothing really memorable besides Brian's(?) antics and The Doctor playing on a Wii. Plus the introduction of Kate Stewart who I can only really remember having about one moment of badassery between this episode & the Zygon 2-parter. The Amy & Rory stuff was meh, and the foreshadowing of their death by the Doctor's description of how his companions leave is nice by itself, but goddamn ***heavy*** in telling the viewer of what's gonna happen in Manhatten. Average. P.S. is probably the best thing Chibnall has done that's good and that I enjoyed. It wraps up the aftermath of Angels take Manhatten nicely and gives closure to Brian's arc put in place by (rolls eyes) Power Of Three. It also doesn't leave him in too much of a bad way because he has a grown-up grandson to look after and talk to. Pretty good. Haven't seen any of his Torchwood stuff so I can't comment on that, but he seems like a decent writer who can sufficiently plan out a series arc and finish it with a pretty decent if quick conclusion. I have seen Broadchurch and thought it was good, but I can't for the life of me understand *why* it went beyond one series if the plot was wrapped up and all the characters had achieved their goals, for better or worse. The one thing I got from it was that he is good at writing individual characters and incorporating their arcs into the overall storyline very well. I'm worried mainly because of the decision to make the Doctor a female and if it doesn't get people interested enough to watch it'll probably just leave Doctor Who in the populace's mind as "Oh, that meh/bad, weird Sci-Fi show." as it's been, in my area anyway, for a few years. But the one thing that both comforts and terrifies me is that the quality of the stories will *ultimately* determine what Doctor Who is thought of and what it will become. If it's thought of as "Oh, yeah, that good Sci-Fi show!" then I will be thankful for Chibnall's, Jodie's and everybody *else* who made Doctor Who a better show than what came before it.... Also, I believe he can solve his own problems and not ignore them like how Moffat did with his Story Arcs and his "mystery thing of the series," but I would need a 4 page Word Document to outline my issues with what Moffat became after Series 6, possibly during Series 5. Regardless, I'm optimistic, still not getting my hopes up unfortunately, but I wish Chibnall the best of luck to make good Doctor Who! :)
I need to say this, but not only you and your friends are funny as fuck, but I also love the simple drawing scattered through the video. It reminds me of "Memes existenciais, which in my opinion it's the best brazilian post-ironic MsPaint channel.

It was a real treat to chat over the entire Chibnall oeuvre with Stu, Billy and Jon. I've got my fingers crossed for Snuggly Classholes next.
YES!!! You guys got to do this kind of commentary on that show. It'd be amazing and definitely a lot of stuff to make fun off.
You guys need to make more videos together because this is gold
54:23 I figured the reason he was so determined to work for Jack was because of his girlfriend, he needed the Torchwood hub, Torchwood connections, alien science, space to put the big machine and all that to save her
I was dying at "Chibnall's Sweat Shop" stuff. I can't get the image out of my head.
GREASE BOY GET ME SOME GREASE
plot twist grease boy works in the sweat shop and this is a punishment
20:40 randomly relevant now coronavirus is a thing 😂
In the end space is all about family-Brian Cox
Moffat wrote some great episodes but was a terrible leader.
Chibnall wrote some of the worst episodes so...maybe by that logic he'll be a great leader...maybe?
I imagine if you travelled back in time to 1969 and told someone the idiot who gave us The Krotons and The Space Pirates would go on to become the most beloved writer in Doctor Who history they'd tell you to get stuffed...
Moffat was a terrible leader? He was a genius and managed to earn the largest rating BBC America ever had for Dr Who. Guess the UK just didn't get the jokes.
@@enorth7301 nope End of Time was highest (Russel Era)
And nope the show went from 7 mil viewers in Season 5 to 4 mil viewers in season 10.
@@enorth7301 ratings mean fuck all, he was shit
I'd love to see more reviews of Torchwood.
I’ve rewatched this about 5 times. Nothing but pure entertainment. Love the Brian Cox bits but Grease Boy is the highlight.
His writing for Eleven is spot on and he did a great job with Ten as well. I have absolute faith in him as a showrunner.
Soctor, lol
But I agree with everything else
👌🏻
Yes, but nitpix's video does a really good job pointing out the flaws of his writing.
You forgot to credit Brian Cox for appearing in your video
I love the idea of the Torchwood Caravan!
Only on 42 and bloody loving this! No need to hav to watch all ur old videos on a loop anymore this’ll keep me going for a while
Oh my word the part with the Tennant noises was glorious
Watching in 2023. Oh dear. 😊
Same here!
I know I'm over a year late but I wish series 1 of Torchwood was 40 episodes long just for the hilarious observations - loved this video.
Because you're all so engagingly funny when you make fun of the episode as I feel it takes a real fan to be able to laugh at and make fun of their favourite thing, most in the fanbase are too defensive and just wanted to say how much i enjoy those cynical sarcastic punches thrown at our favourite campy sci-fi universe ;D
Awesome video as a whole i'd so make!
Why does Billys stick figure look like David Mitchell?
I still love Countrycide. It's a 50 min horror movie on Tele, you don't get that very often.
So much for the optimism…
This was alot of fun I'd love to see something like this again.
Thoughts on the series 11 teaser Stu?
Fragments mention Lissa (the cyber girlfriend) with Ianto trying to get Jack to think she was dead ya just missed it and it also mentioned Suzie (the one who got shot in the first one)
This video was the best thing ever
8:40 I bloody owned one of those skeletons in a jar when I was a boy! Same size, stand color, same everything. It was around 2007, as well!
Rewatching this after covid makes the quip at 20:42 feel very dated. Will give all the Snugglies another listen soon because those were good times.
1:22:40 Kerblam.. proof chibnal has watched this video. 🤣
The booths in end of time have gaps in the doors so that will keep in the radiation
How come people notice the red MRI scanner but no one notices that the human bakery pods from the dalek ship in bad wolf/ parting of the ways and the same as the clone pods in new earth, 2 episodes later
Will you have more Snuggly Chibnall time when Series 11 episode 1 comes out? Cause I really like this format.
Now THIS was something
Unlike that overhyped shallow teaser...
"Overhyped".... "shallow"... words to sum up New Who.
codyw1 definitely over hyped! I don’t think it’s going to go down well
TheJaviferrol I mean it was a teaser for a World Cup game, not Comic Con. there was no way it wasn't gonna be shallow.
An hour+ Stubagful video? I never thought I'd see the day.
Uploaded just before twitch started watching Day one good timing.
Can you guys please piss about and watch more episodes together? Thanks m8
Chitnell owns a Chinese Rolex. Also the episode where Jack died I turned it off thinking that was the cliffhanger. So, it went on for another 15-30 minutes... Hmm. Ok. Glad I missed it.
You need to get those guys back and watch/react to RTD and Steven Moffat stuff
Broadchurch was amazing till it became a bait n switch.
Oh, didn’t I mention THE INTEGRAL CHARACTER until the last episode. My bad.
I heard that the ending for Power of Three was changed and that's why it is so underwhelming.
Your conclusion was shockingly accurate, in hindsight.
I died when Jon says
‘River, can you be my companion?’ - ‘No....’ 😂
Definitely didn't age well.. Definitely not "safe hands"
I rewatch this loads because I enjoy the commentary, but yeah Chibnall was pretty passionately mediocre as a showrunner
I’m probably the only person who really enjoys Cyberwoman
I still really like Chibnall’s Doctor Who stuff, and I even think Day One is an ok episode given what a lemon the basic premise is. I enjoyed the snuggly Chibnall time, but I’m still confident I’m going to enjoy his run.
I would make it so that the aliens get so insulted by the fact that the humans don't want to buy their product that they go on a rampage, and the Doctor has to persuade social media people to promote the cubes and say how awesome they are so the aliens go home.
Richard’s reaction to seeing Rhys’ arse is everything
damn you stuart! now i want the full audio comentary from you guys
Finished this absolutely loved this!! Amazing stuff
An average story that looks pretty (not like the simple lighting after Series 4.)
Now I *really* liked the Silurian two-parter!
At *first.*
Then I saw (DW &) The Silurians.
'The good thing about this episode is that it checks your watch for you' 😂😂😂
I have genuinely fallen asleep to three Chibnall Dr Who episodes.
Which ones (my guesses are 42, Hungry Earth and Cold Blood)?
