Side note for episode 2: Dyspraxic here. Because the gun is heavy, it means that aiming and shooting it wouldn't be harder for someone like me or Ryan, than any other person. I struggle to use and knife and fork properly, but I've always had good aim whenever I've gone shooting. It's weird. The reloading is the hard part lol. It's still dumb though because aiming a gun you've never used before and running would be implausible for anyone

The thing that most English people miss was the not-insignificant distortion of history. Rosa Parks’s protest was planned. She was the second choice of the group staging it. The whole conceit that they had to rush to make sure she got on the bus at the right time completely undermines the movement being depicted. It was the worst episode ever made in my opinion.
The thing that annoys me about Kerblam is that it is very close to being a great episode. It has a well-constructed mystery and great production design. If you just changed the Doctor's characterization and changed the ending, it could've been a diamond in the rough. But the ending bungles the themes so badly that it just kills the entire episode.
The Doctor's morals are so inconsistant, they're trying to make her morally correct but she's just not. The show treats her preferring to let creatures starve to death rather than putting them out of their misery as moral and it just makes her unlikeable.
So, for Rosa, the space racist guy had terrible aim, because he had something implanted in his head while in prison to prevent him from being able to directly harm anyone. They say that later in the episode.
Flux was Jodie’s best but they fumbled so hard. I did love Chewy, but god WHY did Jodie genocide all the fleets?!? (You didn’t mention this btw!!) There was an out where Chewy could’ve done it for revenge, but NOPE, they made the doctor casually genocidal.

Chibnal did two things I liked : one, he swing for the fences in his ideas for the series. And when a series is headed fir decade number 6 that is needed. And Two, he made tge show during covid - no small feat. But that said- his big ideas never had any follow through. The timeless child - a massive idea that is full of story potential- got an episode of the Doctor being upset. Half the universe us destroyed - and I haven't seen any repercussions at all. No follow through. And keeping the dhow on the air during covid is great. But it'd have been better if the show was... good during it. Covid became a crutch to film half baked episodes.

The best compliment I can give 13's run is this. I watched every episode. And if you're thinking "that's not a compliment", I assure you, it is for her run. I did watch each episode and said to myself "yeah I think I'll watch another." And while it was fine enough for a watch, looking back at it and rewatching it is not easy.

For me, the concept of a literally living TARDIS is a scientifically-illiterate idea that should be forgotten and/or retconned. There's no sensible way to argue that time travel machines can "evolve", and organic life-forms simply couldn't survive the extreme conditions TARDISes endure on a regular basis. Even if we're just talking about the "brains" of a TARDIS rather than its outer shell, organic life is very inefficient at building "computers", and deliberately-designed inorganic machines (e.g. based on silicon/quantum technology) will always be vastly superior.

Binged all 3 parts this week at work. Fantastic job. I dropped off the show when Capaldi joined (and only half-paid attention during the second half of Smith's Doctor--though I did enjoy him in the character, I was unenthused with Clara's storylines basically from her start as the companion), so this has been a lot of fun. Tennant was definitely the standout for me!
I agree it's ridiculous they destroyed Gallifrey again, but I don't know about calling Moffat's upfront retcon of a thing he didn't like "the 8 year story arc Moffat and RTD had worked on". RTD nuked Gallifrey because he didn't want the baggage and found it uninteresting. He used that as a device to fundamentally change The Doctor from wandering space hobo to legendary war hero with ptsd. Moffat kept all the legendary war hero stuff but didn't like the idea that The Doctor couldn't find a solution to the Time War that didn't involve killing the Time Lords, because Moffat sees The Doctor as a kids TV hero and writes that into the in universe character. So he used the 50th to retcon the Time War in a way people wouldn't immediately hate. But it was just a way to undo it. And honestly, the whole tone of that cheap fix to the destruction of Gallifrey in Day of the Doctor goes against the whole tone of the RTD era and it's attitude towards danger and consequence. (still probably shouldn't have just nuked Gallifrey off screen again though, that was pretty dumb...)

At 1:19:59, I just wanted you to know that the so called "plate smashing" sound effect when the Angels appear isn't even new. It's actually heard in the series 9 episode hell bent when there's Angels moving about and in the spin off series "Class" with the Angel cliffhanger. And from what I've seen the sound effect is supposed to be the sound of the Angels turning into stone.
I will always feel so sorry for jodie. The writing was awful. However there were some really good episodes, like 5 or 6. (And i loved flux. I wish Chibs did more like that.) But fuck me chibs needed a second opinion when it comes to all the writing.

I was excited for a female doctor. I pretty much gave up half way through the second series and had to binge watch once I discovered DT was coming back (and that wasn't until 6 months after the episode aired). I've not rewatched a single episode from any of the CC series, I can barely remember them and now I know why

I don't know what it was (and no, its not the woman thing) but I just, couldn't with the Chibnall era. I fell away from Doctor Who midway through Moffat, and came back for one episode of Chibnall and it felt so wrong, so off, so... bleh. And its only got worse with RTD coming back which really hurt given how much I love Tennant era. I won't write an essay but ya know, I kinda think Doctor Who is just a different beast now, and its just not for me and not for many of us anymore. I think we need to stop allowing ourselves be trapped in these abusive relationships with franchises, ya know? If its trash, let it go, stop making a whole economy from how bad things are, or how much it disappoints you or how much it wounds your childhood (speaking generally of course, not to DTDW specifically hehe).
Mate to be fair the ‘call me master’ bit was a big thing in ‘the last of the time lords’, so its really in character. Not a fan boy of chib but yk, at least give credit where it’s due
Best ending of Resolution of the Daleks would have been Ryan saying to let his dad die but the doctor is like "no!" and she moves the tardis away from the black hole but Ryaan tries to let him die but doctor refuses. Then the doctor manages to contain him and don't know how. Whilst she is thinking, Ryan's dad kills himself to kill the Dalek. Ryan doesn't believe it and insists that his dad must have had a freak accident or something but the doctor becomes adamant on showing ryan that his dad actually sacrificed himself
I love the ‘garlic bulb’ thing because it’s so clear you’ve seen JayExci’s video and you’re trying so hard not to say ‘big onion’, LOL! (That’s not a bad thing!) And I agree with most of your takes again. Got to say though, while it’s clear that you don’t purely dislike 13 because of her gender, there are still some subconscious biases coming through. Like when you talk about how she brandishes the sonic - it’s no more or less flowery than 10 or 11, but you seem to have a particular issue with how she does it? And you kept referring to her as ‘Jodie’ (i.e. just the actor’s first name) when in previous videos you’ve referred to the actors by their full names (‘David Tennant’, ‘Peter Capaldi’ etc.) Just a couple things I noticed that you could work on in the future, maybe? 🤷♀️
This was a really good video, enjoyed it. But kinda messed me up, had a motorbike accident last week and you making me laugh was playing havoc with my broken bones and torn joints 😂. This era was so disappointing. I was looking forward to seeing Jodi as the Doctor, and she's from round my way as well so I like seeing a local lass done good and whatnot, but it just was bad. You explain it very well, wasn't just the writing, she was not a good fit for the role.

Unpopular Opinion: Flux was REALLY GOOD. It was one of the best seasons, I still don't see why people don't like it. Maybe it's because I'm the only one that understands the timey-wimey stuff.
I understand it perfectly, it's just boring. Tecteun isn't interesting and neither are the Ravagers, the Halloween Apocalypse is just a dreadful episode. The Grand Serpent and UNIT stuff is totally pointless. So is Vinder. And the tunnel man. Dan is also pointless actually.
It's both my favourite season and my favourite story. Some people didn't like it, but others did. I've heard it described as both a masterpiece and Chris Chibnall's magnum opus.
The exposition dumping is so mind-numbingly excessive in this era. I literally can't re-watch a single episode because it drives me insane. I feel bad for disliking (by quite a large margin) Jodie's incarnation more than the rest of the NuWho doctors. I don't want to be sharing a platform with the particularly hateful commentators out there, I really really can't stand Bowlestrek and Co. I know a female doctor can work, as I've seen evidence of it in action in this same era! Jo Martin aces the role, she just commands the screen, but this has the unfortunate side effect of overshadowing Jodie in the process. And I know Jodie has proven herself a more than capable actress during her roles in Broadchurch and Black Mirror to name but a few. But I never got any moment from her where I went "this is The Doctor", no matter how much I have given the era a chance (and I gave all but one episode a full watch, I tried and could not find the motivation to finish the sea devil's one as I just got so bored). Ncuti gave me my "this is The Doctor" moment already, and his first season isn't even complete yet at the time of writing! I'm sure Chibnal's poor writing has a lot to do with it, and he's been no stranger to my criticism. But at the end of the day Jodie's depiction of the doctor just never gelled well with me, and watching this video and your critique has helped me validate my feelings.
I watched this era while it was happening. I don't know why the hell I did that to myself. I could see it was bad and it just wasn't going to improve much. Morbid curiosity? But it wasn't even so bad that it was good (for the most part).
Well I never thought I would enjoy watching the Chibnall era so much as I did watching it vicariously through your eyes. I really didn't like Jodie as the Doctor and thought she was way out of her depth. A shame as I was looking forward to the first female Doctor . Your video was exactly as I had felt when i first struggled through it all. From the awful bad aiming, to the one dimensional characters and Doctor. It was great to see you so moved at the appearance of the classic Doctors in The Power of the Doctor, you literally had the exact same reaction I did upon seeing them. This whole series of videos that you have worked on have been a joy to watch. Keep up the good work and i look forward to the 60th specials/season 14/1 lists. A great way to spend 2 hours thanks.

Matt said in multiple interviews that in between getting cast and starting shooting he watched all of NuWho and a lot of Classic Who. Second Doctor was a big inspiration for his Doctor. Matt might not have been a fan when he was cast but he sure was by the time he started filming.
Some minor issues are prevalent in previous eras, however when the standard of writing is considerably better in the previous 2 eras that minor issues aren’t as much of a distraction or an annoyance 🤷🏻♂️
@@DannyTDW Haha. Okay. I mean, let me be clear, I pretty much agree with your feelings on the Chibnall era. I’m less sure I agree with you on Jodie - I think better writing and some more guidance and consistency would be all she needed, and I genuinely hope at some point we get a multi-doctor story under RTD that brings her back so we can see what she’s like with better writing - sort of how RTD has resuscitated Mel. ANYWAY, back to Demons of the Punjab. I think this episode has a lot of strengths. In some ways it’s quite a lot like an episode I know you like - Vincent and the Doctor - it’s *really* a proper historical that doesn’t really deserve or require any alien or space presence at all. As such it’s a bit slower and a bit less Doctor Who-y than other episodes. It could be a drama about the partition with no sci-fi elements in it at all. And I find this idea that her gran had a first marriage that she hadn’t talked about, the depiction of the collapse of India’s multi-cultural period into factionalism and violence genuinely interesting and involving. And it has this added benefit of giving Yaz the ability to bond and understand her grandmother in a way that she might otherwise not have been able to do. I think it is tragic, and sweet and engaging and occasionally beautiful. I also think Jodie is at her best in this episode. She doesn’t have as many of her usual tics, or at least they’re less present and less difficult. I will accept that there’s something of the after-school very special episode about this one, just as there is with Rosa - a desire to show significant moments from history and explain them to the younger audience. And I will accept that these episodes - particularly in Chibnall’s run - have felt patronizing at times. I just think this is the one that manages the balance of talking about this significant moment with an actually interesting and slightly tragic story, with some quite lovely elements of understanding your family. Is it broad, cascading, rollicking Who adventures? No. Is it a distinct and interesting bit of actual character work, and historical insight, and serious commentary in a period that really really lacked it? I’d say so.

Please don't compare this rubbish to the Sarah Jane Adventures, that show was pretty good and Elisabeth Sladen was great in it.
Binged all 3 parts this week at work. Fantastic job. I dropped off the show when Capaldi joined (and only half-paid attention during the second half of Smith's Doctor--though I did enjoy him in the character, I was unenthused with Clara's storylines basically from her start as the companion), so this has been a lot of fun. Tennant was definitely the standout for me!
I agree it's ridiculous they destroyed Gallifrey again, but I don't know about calling Moffat's upfront retcon of a thing he didn't like "the 8 year story arc Moffat and RTD had worked on". RTD nuked Gallifrey because he didn't want the baggage and found it uninteresting. He used that as a device to fundamentally change The Doctor from wandering space hobo to legendary war hero with ptsd.
Moffat kept all the legendary war hero stuff but didn't like the idea that The Doctor couldn't find a solution to the Time War that didn't involve killing the Time Lords, because Moffat sees The Doctor as a kids TV hero and writes that into the in universe character. So he used the 50th to retcon the Time War in a way people wouldn't immediately hate. But it was just a way to undo it. And honestly, the whole tone of that cheap fix to the destruction of Gallifrey in Day of the Doctor goes against the whole tone of the RTD era and it's attitude towards danger and consequence.
(still probably shouldn't have just nuked Gallifrey off screen again though, that was pretty dumb...)
If you watch the show, Moffat know the Doctor better that RTD or Chibnall.

Making The Doctor so unbearably socially awkward and having Clara holding up queue cards so that he knows what to say just so she can seem more important is just awful writing and character assassination. The Doctor was talking to humans for centuries before Clara came along. Claiming that he "doesn't know how to talk to human" is genuinely, unbelievably stupid. Moffat ruined Doctor Who. There, I said it.

There IS a handful of episodes from this era that I genuinely really like, BUUUUUUUUUUUUUT OMG everything else is so much worse in so many ways than I remembered.
The people who claim that RTD Era 2 is just as bad need their heads checked.

At 1:19:59, I just wanted you to know that the so called "plate smashing" sound effect when the Angels appear isn't even new. It's actually heard in the series 9 episode hell bent when there's Angels moving about and in the spin off series "Class" with the Angel cliffhanger. And from what I've seen the sound effect is supposed to be the sound of the Angels turning into stone.
Expecting the God Awful tier to get really fucking full with this one.

I will always feel so sorry for jodie. The writing was awful. However there were some really good episodes, like 5 or 6. (And i loved flux. I wish Chibs did more like that.) But fuck me chibs needed a second opinion when it comes to all the writing.

This vid should be recognised by the UN as one of the wonders of the world, and should be saved for posterity for future generations. And all future potential show runners for the show should be made to watch it as a warning from history

I was excited for a female doctor. I pretty much gave up half way through the second series and had to binge watch once I discovered DT was coming back (and that wasn't until 6 months after the episode aired). I've not rewatched a single episode from any of the CC series, I can barely remember them and now I know why

I don't know what it was (and no, its not the woman thing) but I just, couldn't with the Chibnall era. I fell away from Doctor Who midway through Moffat, and came back for one episode of Chibnall and it felt so wrong, so off, so... bleh. And its only got worse with RTD coming back which really hurt given how much I love Tennant era.
I won't write an essay but ya know, I kinda think Doctor Who is just a different beast now, and its just not for me and not for many of us anymore. I think we need to stop allowing ourselves be trapped in these abusive relationships with franchises, ya know? If its trash, let it go, stop making a whole economy from how bad things are, or how much it disappoints you or how much it wounds your childhood (speaking generally of course, not to DTDW specifically hehe).
Mate to be fair the ‘call me master’ bit was a big thing in ‘the last of the time lords’, so its really in character. Not a fan boy of chib but yk, at least give credit where it’s due

Best ending of Resolution of the Daleks would have been Ryan saying to let his dad die but the doctor is like "no!" and she moves the tardis away from the black hole but Ryaan tries to let him die but doctor refuses. Then the doctor manages to contain him and don't know how. Whilst she is thinking, Ryan's dad kills himself to kill the Dalek. Ryan doesn't believe it and insists that his dad must have had a freak accident or something but the doctor becomes adamant on showing ryan that his dad actually sacrificed himself

I love the ‘garlic bulb’ thing because it’s so clear you’ve seen JayExci’s video and you’re trying so hard not to say ‘big onion’, LOL! (That’s not a bad thing!) And I agree with most of your takes again. Got to say though, while it’s clear that you don’t purely dislike 13 because of her gender, there are still some subconscious biases coming through. Like when you talk about how she brandishes the sonic - it’s no more or less flowery than 10 or 11, but you seem to have a particular issue with how she does it? And you kept referring to her as ‘Jodie’ (i.e. just the actor’s first name) when in previous videos you’ve referred to the actors by their full names (‘David Tennant’, ‘Peter Capaldi’ etc.) Just a couple things I noticed that you could work on in the future, maybe? 🤷♀️

This era was so disappointing. I was looking forward to seeing Jodi as the Doctor, and she's from round my way as well so I like seeing a local lass done good and whatnot, but it just was bad. You explain it very well, wasn't just the writing, she was not a good fit for the role.

Got couple of broken ribs, and my collar bone has torn out at the joint outer side and is sticking up in a big lump, and when I move around there's this really disconcerting feeling of this bone moving around that I know shouldn't be. It's weird. They may operate on it yet, but think they're hoping it'll heal where it is, but I have my doubts about that.

Unpopular Opinion: Flux was REALLY GOOD. It was one of the best seasons, I still don't see why people don't like it. Maybe it's because I'm the only one that understands the timey-wimey stuff.
I understand it perfectly, it's just boring. Tecteun isn't interesting and neither are the Ravagers, the Halloween Apocalypse is just a dreadful episode. The Grand Serpent and UNIT stuff is totally pointless. So is Vinder. And the tunnel man. Dan is also pointless actually.
It's both my favourite season and my favourite story. Some people didn't like it, but others did. I've heard it described as both a masterpiece and Chris Chibnall's magnum opus.

The exposition dumping is so mind-numbingly excessive in this era. I literally can't re-watch a single episode because it drives me insane.
I feel bad for disliking (by quite a large margin) Jodie's incarnation more than the rest of the NuWho doctors. I don't want to be sharing a platform with the particularly hateful commentators out there, I really really can't stand Bowlestrek and Co. I know a female doctor can work, as I've seen evidence of it in action in this same era! Jo Martin aces the role, she just commands the screen, but this has the unfortunate side effect of overshadowing Jodie in the process.
And I know Jodie has proven herself a more than capable actress during her roles in Broadchurch and Black Mirror to name but a few. But I never got any moment from her where I went "this is The Doctor", no matter how much I have given the era a chance (and I gave all but one episode a full watch, I tried and could not find the motivation to finish the sea devil's one as I just got so bored). Ncuti gave me my "this is The Doctor" moment already, and his first season isn't even complete yet at the time of writing!
I'm sure Chibnal's poor writing has a lot to do with it, and he's been no stranger to my criticism. But at the end of the day Jodie's depiction of the doctor just never gelled well with me, and watching this video and your critique has helped me validate my feelings.

I watched this era while it was happening. I don't know why the hell I did that to myself. I could see it was bad and it just wasn't going to improve much. Morbid curiosity? But it wasn't even so bad that it was good (for the most part).
Well I never thought I would enjoy watching the Chibnall era so much as I did watching it vicariously through your eyes. I really didn't like Jodie as the Doctor and thought she was way out of her depth. A shame as I was looking forward to the first female Doctor . Your video was exactly as I had felt when i first struggled through it all. From the awful bad aiming, to the one dimensional characters and Doctor. It was great to see you so moved at the appearance of the classic Doctors in The Power of the Doctor, you literally had the exact same reaction I did upon seeing them.
This whole series of videos that you have worked on have been a joy to watch. Keep up the good work and i look forward to the 60th specials/season 14/1 lists. A great way to spend 2 hours thanks.

Matt said in multiple interviews that in between getting cast and starting shooting he watched all of NuWho and a lot of Classic Who. Second Doctor was a big inspiration for his Doctor. Matt might not have been a fan when he was cast but he sure was by the time he started filming.

I feel like this is too harsh tbh. Even by my standards. A lot of the issues here exist in other new who eras too
Some minor issues are prevalent in previous eras, however when the standard of writing is considerably better in the previous 2 eras that minor issues aren’t as much of a distraction or an annoyance 🤷🏻♂️

I’m less sure I agree with you on Jodie - I think better writing and some more guidance and consistency would be all she needed, and I genuinely hope at some point we get a multi-doctor story under RTD that brings her back so we can see what she’s like with better writing - sort of how RTD has resuscitated Mel. ANYWAY, back to Demons of the Punjab.
I think this episode has a lot of strengths. In some ways it’s quite a lot like an episode I know you like - Vincent and the Doctor - it’s *really* a proper historical that doesn’t really deserve or require any alien or space presence at all. As such it’s a bit slower and a bit less Doctor Who-y than other episodes. It could be a drama about the partition with no sci-fi elements in it at all. And I find this idea that her gran had a first marriage that she hadn’t talked about, the depiction of the collapse of India’s multi-cultural period into factionalism and violence genuinely interesting and involving. And it has this added benefit of giving Yaz the ability to bond and understand her grandmother in a way that she might otherwise not have been able to do. I think it is tragic, and sweet and engaging and occasionally beautiful. I also think Jodie is at her best in this episode. She doesn’t have as many of her usual tics, or at least they’re less present and less difficult.
I will accept that there’s something of the after-school very special episode about this one, just as there is with Rosa - a desire to show significant moments from history and explain them to the younger audience. And I will accept that these episodes - particularly in Chibnall’s run - have felt patronizing at times. I just think this is the one that manages the balance of talking about this significant moment with an actually interesting and slightly tragic story, with some quite lovely elements of understanding your family. Is it broad, cascading, rollicking Who adventures? No. Is it a distinct and interesting bit of actual character work, and historical insight, and serious commentary in a period that really really lacked it? I’d say so.
